*SAIPAN MARCH EVENT
*HOBIE WESTPAC PRESS RELEASE

*AUSSIE BARBIE THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday, the Sponsor is Broadwater Marine, and they just told me they
will be displaying their grills, and offering some sausages at the Awards.
So, stay for the awards!

*SAIPAN MARCH EVENT
Expect the Stearns in Boracay this year at the Hobie Westpacs (Press
release below). and after that, you may be interested to go to Saipan,
for THEIR event. Tony writes to say:
"our annual event will be March 5-6-7 (racing two days) 35th annual Saipan
laguna Regatta. We'll have a couple boats available for charter if anyone
is interested (cheap), home-stay possible. Fun, low-key event, probably 10
boats or so entered."

*HOBIE WESTPAC (Replacing this year's Hobie Challenge)PRESS RELEASE.
The Philippine Hobie Challenge Foundation is pleased to announce the
holding of the West Pacific Hobie Championships in Boracay Island,
Philippines. Boracay has been the venue for a number of Hobie events over
the years, with the Philippine Hobie Challenge starting from there in 2004
and finishing there in 2000, 2006 and 2009. Since 2001 the annual Hobie 16
Boracay Cup has also taken place in the clear windy waters off Boracay.

The location is ideal for Hobie racing. In February the predominant
Habagat wind blows from the East provides good winds and calm waters
inside the reef for the racing area.

Taking part in the competition will be Hobie 16s and Hobie Tigers. The
Tigers will be shipped in especially for the event from Hong Kong and
Pattaya, Thailand

The WestPac Championships has attracted entries from many countries
including Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Marianas
Islands, Japan, Korea and of course the Philippines. Classes will compete
for prizes in The Open Class, Philippine National Championship, Masters
(over 45), Grand Masters (over 55), Youth (under 21) and Ladies.

Crews will gather for registration, boat tuning, practice and a practice
race on Friday 19 February. A full days racing will take place on
Saturday, Sunday and Monday with up to 6 races each day. The grand finale
will be the Awards Night celebrations on Monday night.

Many of the competitors will be stay on after the WestPac Championships to
compete in the Boracay Cup. This event which was initially established for
Keelboats and Ocean Multi-hulls will open its doors to the Beach
Catamarans for the first time. The Hobie 16 and Tigers will race on long
15 to 20 mile offshore courses, which is totally different to the windward
/leeward courses used for the WestPac Championships. Racing in the Boracay
Cup takes place from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 27 February.

BALAI ISABEL RTV09
The Balai Isabel Round Taal Volcano Regatta was a great success. 27
teams, 20 of them Hobie 16s, made for great racing in perfect conditions
of 8-18 knots over the course of the regatta. I took vids, and I put a
“teaser” together. See it at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4aeTUuktOI
My apologies in advance, but there are lots of people missing in the
teaser, and there is no PY class in there yet. The soundtrack is a bit
off, but I wanted to post something on You tube, to announce in this
newsletter. I’m hoping to make a full video, but I need stills, and vids,
especially of the parties. I have an even greater respect now for video
editors! It took 8 hrs to make a 4 minute vid, and it still needs some
refinement. Watch it anyway. It might be a slow loader, so be forewarned!

UPCOMING TLYC RACING
The Women’s helm is this Sunday December 6. The Broadwater Marine Hobie
16 Regatta , our regular 2nd Sunday regatta, will be held on December 13.

DISCOUNT ON DUES
2 weeks ago, I was supposed to announce that members updating their
accounts in November, and paying their 2010 dues, would get a 2 month
Discount if they paid by Nov, 30.
Since I didn’t announce it, I’m extending the offer!
Members will get a 2 month discount if paid in December, and a
one month discount if paid by Jan 31st. Reply to this email, and we'll
make sure you get the info you need.

Typhoon Mirinae/Santi scored a hit on Taal lake Yacht Club, This morning,
but I'm happy to note that due to vigilance and preparedness of the staff,
who prepared things the day before, and came to work at 5AM to be on hand
when the wind switched to the south, there was no damage to any of the
boats or facilities.

So far, the weather prognosis for next weekend's (Nov 7-8) "Punta Fuego
Regatta", and the "One Tagaytay Place Homebuilt Boat Regatta" , looks very
good with wind out of the east at 10 knots.

Paul,

Participants:
1)I asked Alex Chen to call you. I gave him your number. I think he is
interested.
2)Grady is planning to go to PG. He may sail a Hobie, or he may take a
jetski and be able to help with race management.

Help:
I will be sailing with Joe on Karakoa, to give the club some exposure in
the big boats. My plan is to drive to Batangas, leave the car there, and
take the ferry. I may be able to move peoples bags or equipment to
Manila, from Puerto Galera, by ferry, and then by car.

Peter

Hobienews Oct 15 Typhoon Warning

TYPHOON WARNING
Although tropical storm 22W is still out near Saipan, and is still unnamed,
I'm calling it to everyone's attention, because it is quite late in the
season, and there is a good probability that it will hit the Philippines
in about a week. With flooding in many areas at critical levels, even a
small storm can cause big problems.

WOMENS HELM REGATTA
The Womens helm regatta will be held on the first Sunday of December.
That's December 6.
There is no official NOR as of this time, but it probably wont differ much
in substance from this:
http://www.sailing.org.ph/tlyc/hobie/womenshelmnor.html
and the SIs will look a lot like this:
http://www.sailing.org.ph/tlyc/hobie/siwomenshelm.html

RTV
I keep getting texts asking when the Round Taal Volcano Regatta will be.
Its Nov 21-22.

CONGRATULATIONS
The Club Championship is a compilation of Skippers race scores at TLYC
from May to October. This year, the Champion is Mike Ngu, Luigi Manzi was
Second, and Paul Symes came Third.
We also have a championship for "B fleet" which is comprised mostly of new
sailors.
Alex Chen was First, Brent Chamberlain came Second, Hans Woldring was
Third.

Puerto Galera YC All Souls Regatta - Travellers Series
By Mark Haswell thru the HOBIENEWS.

Half a dozen Hobies have already expressed an interest in joining the
PGYC's annual All Souls Regatta and we hope we can get the fleet up into
double digits for this event which will comprise one of the Travellers
Series.

Basic schedule;

Saturday 31st

- 09:00 Hrs briefing at Leah Beach, Batangas (your Hobies will have been
taken there the week before)
- 09:30 Hrs Start time for 12.5 nm Passage Race to Puerto Galera (Could be
as quick as 1 hour if the conditions are good)
- Midday Lunch ashore in Puerto Galera
- PM Joining the PGYC Racing
- Evening joining the PGYC social events

Sunday 1st

Following the PGYC Schedule of races for the day followed by our PGYC
Hobie Series awards ceremony at the clubs evening function
(Our racing for the travellers series event will take place on Saturday
and Sunday only and will be a mixture of passage and short course races)

Monday 2nd

08:30 departure time from Puerto Galera for the Hobie fleet for for the 47
nm passage to Punta Fuego
(N.B. This passage is NOT a race and will be a fun cruise in company which
could be be completed in 4 hours with favourable winds but the early start
is to ensure we get in before nightfall.)

The Hobies will then be left in Punta Fuego ready for their regatta the
following weekend (NB - this does not mean you have to do both regatta's,
if you can only do one or the other no problem but the more the merrier
obviously)

Logistics and Admin;

We will have one or two RIB's, depending on Hobie numbers, following the
fleet throughout the 3 days of passages and races providing safety
coverage and they will be able to tow the fleet in the event winds drop
off.

A Banca is organized to take everyone's bags as well as friends and family
from Leah to PG on the Saturday morning and it will do the reverse route
on Monday if it does not sail directly to Punta Fuego (TBD but competitors
will need to pool cars and drivers to get their cars from Leah Beach to
Punta Fuego)

We have 6 rooms good for a total maximum of 16 people already reserved
with the Sandbar Resort which is where our Hobies will be beached
overnight. The Yacht Club's service boat and/or our own RIB's will be able
to run competitors between the town, PGYC and the hotel although it is
also connected by road so you can get a tricycle any time.

For more details and to express your interest to participate please email

There was no damage to any of the boats, during the last 2 storms. The
water however, is higher than most readers have seen it, so I'm attaching
this Youtube link.
If you are used to walking to Walter's this is pretty dramatic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=239aFqnZGSE

As you can see, all the boats have been broken down, and will need
re-assembly. We will only re-assemble boats that are going to be used this
weekend. The others will remain dis-assembled, because we are only half
way through the typhoon season.

The staff are extremely busy, and we have hired extra help for the club's
clean up, and fix up, and we are re-arranging lots of stuff.
SO, If you are racing this Sunday (yes! there is racing!), and you rant
your boat re assembled, then please call Joe and ask for boat re-
assembly. It has to be scheduled.

Thanks!

We hired extra help today, and as of 3PM , all the boats were in "safe"
mode. There is no parking at TLYC now.
While this was ongoing, we were making arrangements with Lifeline Rescue,
to possibly supplement their efforts with a team from TLYC, with 2
modified Hobie 16, and other equipment.

The current status is that we are lowering our alert level, because the
typhoon is veering more northward, and its past the point where a slight
change in direction could have a ajor impact on us.

All this brings social responsibility to the forefront. If you read this
email, and you are interested in becoming part of a "TLYC Auxilliary Coast
Guard Squadron" Please email me back.
This squadron will have multiple functions, that range from environmental
concerns, to rescue during typhoons. If you have questions, you can ask
me. I used to be chief of operations for the Manila Yacht Club Squadron.

Peping is packing a punch. 300+kph vs the 100 of Ondoy.
Most weather predictions put Peping hitting the tip of Northern Luzon on
Saturday.
The .gif that I'm attaching, is quite a bit scarrier. It shows Peping
taking about the same track as Ondoy. The rain gauge for Manila and
Batangas is pink. That means its off the chart, which, at 70MM/6rs is
equivalent to "More than 240MM in 24 hrs".

TLYC is going into crisis mode. We will be hiring extra labor tomorrow.
All Hobie trampolines will be unlaced by the club, and we will do our best
to secure all boats, including the Homebuilts. If you have a boat a TLYC,
note that this is not part of our contract with you, but we consider this
an emergency, and we will do what we can to protect your boats.
If you have time to go to the club on Friday, we will appreciate your
help, especially if you have a vehicle with a ball hitch.

We are taking this typhoon EXTREMELY seriously.

Theres still time to register for the BDO Hobie Asian Championships 2009.
As of now, I know Maria Vidoeira will be going with Bing and Boyet.
Hopefully there will be more sailors who will fly our flag in HK?

RACING THIS SUNDAY
EXCELLENT TURNOUT FOR July RACING IN GREAT WEATHER
THE CLUB NEEDS YOUR GARBAGE

RACING THIS SUNDAY
A little wet, but it looks like good wind. Mike has been practicing, Luigi
has been down to the club a lot. I hope we can get a similar turnout in
this August regatta compared to last month, which was just GREAT!!

EXCELLENT TURNOUT FOR July RACING IN GREAT WEATHER
Gorgeous weather, wind all day, and 16 boats started. First Place- Mike
Ngu, Samuel Amadeo. 2nd Place- Rex and Art. 3rd Place- Paul and Joanne
Symes.
Paul and Joanne are still leading in the Club Championship, but anything
can happen... :-)

THE CLUB NEEDS YOUR GARBAGE
specifically, old Tires.
The water in the lake has risen significantly because of fishcage
operations that have resulted in the blocking of the Pansipit river. This
rise has affected the club, and we have already lost a significant amount
of land. we need tires to slow the erosion. We have already removed all
the tires from under the boats, and used them for erosion control, but we
need more tires. When you come down to the club, please bring your old
tires.

Thanks,
:-)

We just recieved a text message an hour ago, from Laeuna De Taal. The
Openhouse lunch on Sunday has been cancelled. No reason given.
So, the racing on Sunday will push through, but it will just be a normal
race weekend and we will not be stopping at Laeuna for lunch.

THE OWL HAS BEEN RELEASED

LAEUNA DE TAAL OPEN HOUSE
Racing this Sunday, July 12 2009. The wind has been good for the last
couple of days, and we are expecting the same over the weekend. Lunch will
be sponsored at Laeuna de Taal, so bring friends and family for a free
lunch. The more we are that show up, the better. Hopefully, they will
help with a big event like the Nationals or RTV.

ANDY SORIANO WINS ROLEX TROPHY IN ITALY
TLYC member Andy Soriano, helming his 68 foot Alegre captured line honors
in the 57th edition of the Giraglia Rolex Cup, held at the Yacht Club
Italiano in Genoa. Congratulations Andy! See the pic at

TALISAY WATERFRONT LOTS FOR SALE
Paul Symes is selling 2 lots on the water, about 500 meters from TLYC.
Contact Paul at 09175333735

THE OWL HAS BEEN RELEASED
Some of you may know that the TLYC staff rescued a young Owl with a broken
wing a few weeks ago. You may have seen it in a cage near the bar.
Another owl was seen every night in a nearby tree and the two exchanged
screeches for hours. Our owl would do a little dance when he saw the other
owl. Last Sunday, around 5PM, we decided he had recuperated enough, and
raised the cage into the trees, with an open door, and even a perch that
he could walk out on. At 6, the other owl appeared, but “our” owl didn’t
leave the cage till around 4 in the morning! The 2 owls have been spotted
every night since, with “our “owl doing his little dance when he sees that
we are looking at him.

We have all the results posted, so anybody can see who is ahead.
But if you mean AFTER the championship, yes. Thats a good idea, and Joe
said he plans on changing the Topper ladder to the Hobie Ladder.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP STARTS WITH MAY 10 REGATTA.
The Club Championship is held in the “off season” which runs from May thru
October. All the races are tallied into one event. There were 4 races on
May 10, and the overall results were a bit surprising.
Luigi and Andy Reimers topped the rankings, which was not that surprising,
but relative newcomer Glenn Everett placed second, probably inspired by
his lovely crew Janna Franke. In another surprise finish, Paul Symes and
Joanna placed third, beating Champion Nestor Soriano and his student Alex

and truly wonderful to see how some have progressed so far, in So little
time!

PAGCOR KALAYAAN REGATTA ON JUNE 14
“Kalayaan” is the Tagalog word for “Freedom” thus the Philippine Amusement
and Gaming Corporation has coined the regatta’s name. Hopefully the
weather will be as good as this last weekend, with about 10 knots of wind,
and no rain. Anybody want to bet?

See you all this weekend!

I went to the boatshow last night. The major boatbuilders are there, and
its good to support the event.
From Edsa, when you get to SM Mall of Asia, TURN RIGHT when you get to the
giant globe. Go all the way to the end of the avenue, and its in a large,
white, open steel roofed structure at the end of the road.

The PHBYC is holding another family boat building weekend in a few weeks.
Check out the notice attached, and call early. there are limited slots,
and they are filling up fast. Register at:

Sorry all for being so remiss with the news. There's a lot to report, but I cant
do it all now, except to announce the beginning of the SEA-EX Boatshow that
starts tomorrow, and runs through the weekend.

The show is at SM's Asiaworld, and is behind the main building, facing the
water. Its open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Monchu and Joe will be there, and I think they will give you a rum and coke, if
you ask for one.

Racing this Sunday
This Sunday is the second Sunday of the month,  and if you are not going to be at Rex's wedding, or recovering from a game of golf the night before (some of you will know what I'm referring to), be at the regatta!

Monchu Garcia takes First in Pioneer Regatta.
Congratulations to Monchu for coming first in the December Regatta, sponsored by Pioneer epoxy and paint products.  Maria and Bing were Second, Doc Dennis in third. Congratulations. Thanks to Pioneer.

Congratulations to Rex,  Paul and Joanne, and  Gianna.
So many weddings of members this month!! Congratulations Rex!  I hope lots of us can get to the wedding in Davao. The following weekend we have 2 weddings in Boracay, on the same day!  Paul and Joanne, in the afternoon, and Gianna Rodriguez, in the morning!

Please Sign up for the Nationals if you haven't already
The Nationals are coming up soon, and it will be a great weekend at Laiya.  We have top sailors coming in, including Tong Shing, Bob Engwirda, Bruce Tardrew, Tony and Janet Stearns. It will be a very educational weekend for anybody who sails Hobies, regardless of your level of experience.  BUT, PLEASE , download the entry form at www.philhobie.com, and sign up. Logistics are very complex, particularly because we need to send boats back to TLYC, that are not doing the Challenge, which starts the very next day.   There are lots of options, and it will be much better for you, if we know your choices beforehand.

TLYC is a Wi-Fi Hotspot
TLYC has gotten a wireless broadband connection, and we have installed a wireless router, so we are now a  Wi-Fi Hotspot.  Just get the Password from Joe.

Happy New year!!

#PHILIPPINE HOBIE CHALLENGE to Boracay and H16 NATIONALS at Laiya
Lots of people have expressed a commitment to enter, but PLEASE, we need
the entry forms! Much of the info is critical for planning rooms, food,
boat transport, and other logistics.
To make this simpler, I'm attaching the NOR and Entry form..again.

#BALAI ISABEL ROUND TAAL VOLCANO REGATTA, and GOVERNORS CUP
100 people out on the water was a great achievement, and it was well worth
the huge effort. Kayaks, and the little Optis to our first "Ocean
Multihull" to join
the RTV, all had a blast.

In the moment of greatest criss before the event, BALAI ISABEL threw in
sponsorship at the last moment. Steve Fields of HOBIE AUSTRALASIA
surprised me when called up and said he would help out. And very special
thanks to CYNTHIA CARRION, and the DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM, for providing
the great "Patiqueros" band and the fire dancer, who embraced the Vice
Governor Mark Leviste inside her inner circle of flames. She then went
head to head with our very own Janna Franke, followed by Roy Espiritu's
Bagpipe solo. This year the shoreside activities and party matched Jerry
Rollins excellent race management on the water.

If you have good pics, please send them to me for the webpage, pls email
them to pcapotosto@... or email me back so I can pick up a CD from
you.

I got several great letters, and I have to quote Brenda and Peter Davies,
who wrote:
" A fantastic weekend and a lovely reminder to Peter and I about what
Hobie 16 sailing is all about - sun, speed, balance, and the occasional
swim!"
The water was certainly more pleasant than HK!

We had the GMA network's Q11TV to cover the event. The coverage will air
on Monday December 8 at 10pm. on Cable that's either Channel 16 or 24.

#PIONEER EPOXY and MARINE PAINT PRODUCTS SPONSOR DECEMBER 14 CHRISTMAS
REGATTA
Republic Chemical, manufacturers of Pioneer Epoxy and paints, will be
sponsoring this year's Christmas regatta. A Special prize to the most
appropriately dressed crew, and boat.

#And Speaking of CHRISTMAS...
If you want to donate to the employees Christmas party, either in cash, or
in kind, you can either email me a pledge, or take raffle prizes to Joe at
the club, or to my Makati office.

NOR has been amended and is posted.
http://www.sailing.org.ph/hobie/rtv08nor.html
There is not THAT much of a substantial change to the original NOR, but
all are advised to read it. There is an extra meal at Balai Isabel on
Saturday, and the Sunday schedule of non-racing activities is toned down.

SPECIAL THANKS To
-Balai Isabel, who are the new name sponsor. We have added a stop at Balai
Isabel for a swim and a bite to eat after the Race around the island.
-Hobie Australasia, who called to extend their support, and are helping
out with some funding for the dinner on Saturday night. Pls make sure you
pay your IHCA dues next year! :-)
-Sunbrella, for also helping out with the Saturday night dinner (I hope).
-Monchu, for helping out with trucking for the Kayaks that will be joining
the event for the first time.
- And Cynthia who I hope will be able to get us some music for the event.
-Thanks also to numerous other people who have pitched in to help out, in
all sorts of ways, even before the event has started. I'm sure there will
be more names by Saturday night. :-)

PLEASE LOOK AT THE LIST of PARTICIPANTS BELOW!
As usual, very few people have signed up, but fortunately, since we block
booked Walters and Flamingo, we have a fair Idea of who is coming, because
we have access to the records. But still there are gaps. The biggest
difficulty will be if people show on Saturday night, and we have not
planned for you. I reiterate yet again. The food is ordered in advance. We
need to know exact numbers.
We have only 4 registration forms in hand. Yet we know that around 85
people will be there for dinner. If you are not on the confirmed list
below, Please fill out the entry form at tlyc.com/hobie/rtv08nor.html or
at least text me with names. Thanks.
