There is so much good information to be found on TORN that one simply must echo the occasional TORN story even while striving to document other sources of Tolkien- and Hobbit-related news. Here are a couple items: First, Douglas A. Anderson (THE ANNOTATED HOBBIT) will speak at Bradley University on February 17, 2009 in Peoria, IL. Second, TORN picked up a report in which Sir Ian McKellen says "The Hobbit" is not simply a remake of "The Lord of the Rings". He provides an interesting actor's insight into how the new movies will be different from the last set.
HELLBOY'S MIGNOLA JOINS HOBBIT CREW
====================================================================
Mike Mignola, co-creator of Hellboy, will be joining Guillermo del Toro's "Hobbit" team.
PENNSYLVANIA HOBBIT AND FAIRY FESTIVAL RECEIVES GRANT
====================================================================
Have you never heard of the Woodland Hobbit and Fairy Festival in Keating Summit, PA? That's okay. The Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts have. They awarded the festival a $1730 grant. The Festival will be held June 13, 2009.
REAL HOBBITS WERE NOT HUMAN
====================================================================
J.R.R. Tolkien wrote in a letter that Hobbits were a branch of the human race. However, science may disagree with him (sort of). A new study of the controversial Homo Floresiensis cranial structure suggests that the creatures were not members of Homo Sapiens (our species). But they would have been relatives. Oh well, maybe Tolkien was right after all and it's just a bit more complicated than scientists have been led to believe.
AFTER 42 YEARS, STUDENT RECALLS TEACHER'S "YEAR OF THE HOBBIT"
====================================================================
This anecdote was just too cool to pass up. Eleanor Sheposh has retired from teaching after 42 years of teaching kids of all ages. Among her accomplishments: teaching elementary school students how to determine the mass of their school, expanding the science curriculum for a high school, and she wrote and directed plays. But one student contacted her to recall the Year of the Hobbit 42 years ago, when Shebosh celebrated Tolkien's book in a school-wide theme.
TIPS FOR COMMUNITY THEATER GROUPS
====================================================================
We love to help promote local Hobbit play productions. I'll mention them on SF-Fandom when I can find news stories about them. Here is a tip for anyone working on a local production of THE HOBBIT: contact a few Tolkien fan groups and ask their help in promoting the play. By the time people find the announcements in regular online news, it's too late. For example, auditions for an El Paso "Hobbit" production were being held on January 24 and 25. The Savannah Children's Theater is presenting "The Hobbit" on January 25. By the time you read this, it will be too late.
Contact the Xenite.Org Administrators if you want to our help in promoting your community's "Hobbit" play and auditions. We'll support Community Theaters in any city that have a Web site. If you don't have a Web site, feel free to cut-and-paste a press release (no pictures) into our contact form.
