Jennifer,
I don't have any such photos but would suggest that you contact the following
people. I believe both these houses interpret their servants and might have
photos:
Marcia Young, Site Manager

Gerald Brauer, Executive Director
Ellwood House Museum
509 N. First St.
DeKalb, IL 60115

Another option is to contact Greg Koos at mcmh@.... This is the
McLean County Museum of History, also in Bloomington. It is not a historic
house but he has an exetensive collection of photographs that includes
servants from McLean County homes.
Good Luck,

I'm sure you're aware of the following two books, but I thought I'd pass
along the information for others. They have a wealth of images and
first-person recollections that may help with the interpretation of
domestic servants/slaves:
Vlach, John Michael. Back of the Big House: The Architecture of
Plantation Slavery. (The Fred W. Morrison Series in Southern Studies).
(Chapel Hill, NC: University of North Carolina Press, 1993)

Subject: [historichousemuseums] Searching for photos of domestic
servants
Dear Colleagues,
I am a Ph.D. candidate in American Studies at the University of Iowa and
the
Historian at Brucemore, a National Trust Historic Site in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa. I am in the process of writing a dissertation about the
interpretation of domestic servants at historic house museums. My
primary
focus is the way this interpretation has evolved since the emergence of
social history and how it can continue to be improved. However, I am
also
addressing the depiction of domestic servants in visual culture
(primarily
between 1880-1929) and its function during their period and the ways
they
can be used as primary sources for interpretive tours. I have been
collecting images of servants in fine and popular art and photographs of
actual servants. I am particularly interested in looking for trends in
photographs of actual servants and how they compare to those I have
identified in paintings and illustrations.
I am seeking assistance from house museum staff in the collection of
photos
of domestic servants for my project. These images are few and far
between,
but if your site has some in your collections, I would greatly
appreciate
hearing from you. If you would be willing to send me a copy of the
photo
via digital file or a photocopy, that would be most helpful. Also let
me
know what kind of information you have about the photo, such as how you
obtained it, who originally owned it or took it, and if and how you use
the
photo in your interpretation of domestic servants.
Thanks for your time and assistance.

The New Castle Historical Society is undertaking a marketing plan for the
Society which manages two historic house museums. Would anyone share their
example?
We are also writing a marketing plan for a grant application to set up a web
site. In particular we want to develop strong goals and action plans to have
the web site connect us to casual visitors whom we want to bring to our 18th
century houses - very colonial, and Colonial Revival, in a charming, early
port town, New Castle, Delaware. Any good advice?
Bruce Dalleo, Director
The historic house at Maymount in Richmond, VA did an exhibit on servants
which was outstanding. I saw a workshop on it at a national convention. I
am having trouble recalling the name of the house, but Maymount ought to do.
It is a late Victorian estate overlooking the James River.

Hello All,
We are in the midst of writing a business plan for the Kirkman House Museum. I
am looking for examples of successful plans that are in place at other house
museums in the U.S., so we can use them as a guide and basically plagiarize the
heck out of them. No point in re-inventing the wheel. If any of you have plans
you can share, or can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks very much,

The California Association of Museums has a GREAT survey they print every
other year available on the American Association of Museums bookstore
online--its fairly reasonably priced and I used it every year while
budgeting for my satff at the museum. The Colorado-Wyoming Association of
Museums has put one out fairly recently I'd e-mail kim@...
and ask her about that one. The New York Sate Museum association has also
put one out that includes benefits information as well as salaries. That one
is also on AAM's site and has rural and city museums split out...Good luck!

You might consider contacting local vocational schools or
construction/woodworking programs at high schools in the area. If you
offered to provide the materials, you could probably convince them to
take it on as a volunteer project. Then you could have it built
specifically to meet your needs, and strengthen your ties with the
local community. It never hurts to ask...

Does anyone know a good source to purchase an outdoor kiosk at a
reasonable price ($2500-$5000). It will need to be sturdy, have a
roof large enough to really keep the weather and sun off, and have
room for three exhibits including a visitor sign in box. It would
probably be about 20 feet long, about 10 feet tall. I am thinking of
one with a central exhibit area and wings angled forward for the side
exhibits. Roughly like this: ___

I need it for Griswoldville Battlefield Memorial, a Civil War
battlefield near Macon, Georgia.
Thank you.

I nabbed this from the Museum-L list but thought it was an
interesting idea for house museums......

Thanks, Matt. There are some great single resources on various pieces
of historic house/historic site planning but not to my knowledge one
source which integrates all of these aspects, which is what master
planning is. I do expect to see resources like that in the near
future, either through us or another national organization.

SURVEY
I apologize for posting this message a second time, but I wanted to
make sure that all of the recent members had the opportunity to
respond to this short (only 3 questions) questionnaire.

The AASLH Historic House Museum Initiative is looking for exemplary
work in historic house museums and organizations in an effort to
provide creative models and best practices to our colleagues who work
in interpretation, education and public programs, collections
management, and administration. Would you help us? If so, please
provide us with feedback on the following questionnaire. You can cut
and paste it onto an email and send it to me at white@... or
mail it to: Tara White, AASLH, 1717 Church Street, Nashville, TN
37203. Thank You!
1. Is there a historic house or historic house museum that you
consider a "model site"? What are some of the things that
make this site or organization exemplary?
I've never visited many nationally significant house museums, even in the
Southeast. However, based on a recent New York Times article, I'd have to
consider Mount Vernon a model site because it appears to be adapting well to the
challenge house museums face in the 21st Century of offering compelling
educational programming to children and people of all ages. I salute them for
taking an aggressive leadership role interpreting the life of George Washington
and planning for the program content and facilities to increase sagging
attendance numbers.
2. Can you give an example of a historic house with specific programs
that can serve as models of excellence in the following areas? Please
be as specific as possible.
a)Governance/Leadership-Monticello, Research and Administration
b)Interpretation-Mount Vernon (see Question 1)
c)Education-Monticello, Great website and libraries!
d)Public Programs-Monroe County, Alabama, Old Courthouse-"To Kill A
Mockingbird" presentation
e)Collections care and management-Old Town Alabama, Montgomery,Alabama
3. Other comments?
I'd like to see assistance of some kind to get people started with Master
Planning. Access to copies of completed Master Plans that are proven
and successful would be most helpful.
Thanks!

Thanks, Monta Lee! I think it was great that you suggested a house with a
different governance/leadership model. Colleagues, as you submit
information to the list on the various house museums that you think are
doing great work, I would encourage you to think about including ones with
different governing structures and paradigms for leadership.

For its size, it does a lot of things that only big museums can do. For
example, it clothes and trains its re-enactors for its 18th-century
programs
(most places don't provide training). It also maintains high standards in
all aspects of museum administration.

GTM is part of a municipal system so its governance structure is without a
board, but the way in which GTM operates within this system is as sound if
not more so than those museums with a board. It is a model of how
municipal
museums should operate.

Hi Monta Lee,
I would love to have comments within the next month, preferably
before Nov. 20. Also, please feel free to share the survey with
people who are not on the list. I would be more than happy to send
you a clean copy in MS Word as a document attachment. Let me know
