Am I nuts, or is the little "tattoo house" on Horner just... gone?

I always meant to stroll in there to see what it was like inside, but
never got around to it.

But apparently someone snuck in and demolished the little house down
on Horner sometime in the last week or so.

I'm surprised I didn't notice on one of my many trips to Lowe's and
such, but I swear it was there one day... and just an empty lot the
next. Wow that was fast.

Well, that's progress I guess. And realistically I guess it really
was doomed in that location, being just a little house and all.

But then again, I've seen some pretty nice business parks made up of
groups of little houses expanded, moved in, etc. So it's kind of a
bummer to me to see it wiped out without practically overnight.

Too bad, it was an interesting little building from the exterior.

I got my copy of the Pezzoni book today, and inside the front cover is a label stating that
it was from the library of Dan H. Stout, who I assume is the son of J.W. Stout, the builder
of many of the historic Sanford buildings (he has made many references in margin notes).

The book is really interesting, though I've mainly just scanned over the photos and read
the captions so far, I haven't actually gotten into reading it yet.

Just thought I'd share that bit of info.

David.

An interesting aside that this subject got me thinking
about when I drove by the empty lot today....

I wonder what happened to all the old materials,
windows, hardware, etc that was part of that old
house?

The question is somewhat rhetorical of course, as
likely all the debris is in the landfill.

But I think it is a good question.

As we know, once something is gone, it's gone. And I
think about all the folks in our neighborhoods looking
for replacement windows, hardware, wood, etc. And
then I think what a waste it is when some old
buildings are demolished, even justifiably, but their
remaining good parts go unsalvaged.

So two thoughts:

1) Does an owner or developer have to obtain a permit
to demolish a structure?

and...

2) If so, I wonder if it would be possible to work
with the city to identify buildings, whether in a
historic district or not, that are say... 50+ years
old... where the permit would require the owner to
allow the public the opportunity to salvage portions
of the building for some short limited time prior to
the planned demo?

Obviously this is a simplistic view, as there are all
sorts of issues one could suggest. But in general
this might be an interesting idea that would let
"progress" proceed, while allowing the community to
save and benefit from any valuable architectural
details the structure may still be able to offer
before disappearing forever.

Has anyone discussed or given thought to something
like this before?

Heck, over time we could even start a community
"warehouse" of salvaged parts if someone had space
available.

About a week ago, we had two outdoor kittens, very close in
appearance, apparently from the same litter, one boy one girl. But
they have gone missing.

They are about 4 months old, are mostly solid white, but have blotches
of tabby/brown/black. One has a black spot on its chin if I recall.

They are both very friendly, will come when called, and both seem to
be together pretty much all the time, lying together, chasing each
other, etc.

We live at the corner of N. Gulf and Summit. We think they may have
been picked up by someone, as they never left the yard before, but
would have happily let someone pick them up.

They were both wearing waaay too large(humorously) white with green
striped flea collars. Another reason we think they were picked up is
that we found one of those collars along the sidewalk in the empty lot
at Sunset and Vance behind the Montgomery's house. The collar didn't
just slip off, as it was actually undone as if thrown aside.

So, if you happen to see these two kittens, please let us know.

We've checked at the Human Society, and they haven't seen them.

Thanks!

Al,

I know nothing about cats, but by “tabby” do you mean orange-ish?  There was a white cat with orange/brown/dark gray markings that I had noticed hanging on my neighbor’s porch while they were out of town and across the street at the duplex.  Last Tuesday while walking to and from the NNO I noticed it had been hit by a car and was up against the curb.  I did not notice a collar on it – in fact I think I remember noting that was specifically no collar on it.  I hope this wasn’t one of the cats you are looking for.

Hrmm, hopefully it wasn't one...

By "tabby" what I meant is that spotted/striped
pattern you often see on cats that are gray, orange,
or brownish. The big blotches/spots on these mostly
white kittens were a gray/black with the tell-tale
spotted stripes in those blotches.

These cats are very slim, small, and kitten like...
but just a bit bigger and more lean as they were in
between kitten and adolescent.

Don't forget, I still have many(probably 30+) of the neighborhood
bumper stickers leftover from the NNO party. I also have several
Preservation North Carolina: "Historic Preservation, The Ultimate
Recycling" stickers as well.

If you've forgotten what they look like, just check out the images in
the files section.

These are free to residents, and I would love to see them around town.

So if you would like one, just let me know and I can drop it off, or
feel free to drop me an email and/or come by the house to pick one up.

Cheers
Al

P.S.

Also please feel free to invite your neighbors to check out our group
if you think they are unaware, especially any new arrivals. I have
fliers with the URL you can give them if you like. I'd really love to
see some more activity here over time.

Subject: Neighborhood Parks
al_roethlisb...
Send Email Send Email

As many of you may recall, it was probably almost exactly a year ago
in the forum that we discussed our ideas and hopes for neighborhood
parks... specifically small neighborhood child/family friendly
playground areas.

Well, while I was that NNO party, I was chatting with two of our city
council members, Stephen Brewer and Dan Harrington on the subject of
unused city land, etc.... and we finally ended up chatting about
vacant lots and the potential they have for parks.

As most of us know, the city of Sanford "got out of the park business"
so to speak a few decades ago, and many of the parks we have are
currently maintained by the county.

But according to Stephen, the city has been discussing the virtues of
getting back into providing parks for families, and the value it
brings to the neighborhoods. He said that some on the council have
openly expressed "the mistake" the city made years ago by not
maintaining parks.

So as we talked some more, we of course mentioned several of the "FEMA
lots" such as the one on North Gulf, and established parks like McIver
that would be ideal if fully developed.

What he said was that the city was thinking about parks and
playgrounds for school age kids and families, but not basketball
courts, etc that often attract an older crowd, which I'm sure many
here would agree with.

So I asked him how we moved beyond mere talk to action... how do we
really get traction on an issue like this? His answer was that we
need to go figure out what we want, get some ideas and proposals
including rough costs, then the council can see what they can do.

Stephen reminded me that there are many methods to fund these
activities including possible grants, donations, and business
sponsorships along with direct city funding. But the city is willing
to consider making it a reality once they know what is being requested.

With that in mind, I thought I'd just throw this message "out there"
to see if any interest in piqued. I know we have a lot of ideas and
plans out there for improvements to the neighborhood that we don't
even have enough time for already, but this is another one that may
take some time to become a reality if we decide to pursue it. So
starting early may be a real benefit, especially if we have some
sympathetic ears on council.

So, does anyone have any experience in this area? I wonder if there
are any contacts in surrounding cities that might be a good resource
on how/where to start?

Al

Hi Tammy,

Indeed it has seemed like a long time has passed. How
time flies.

As you may recall, I sent out the email on July 17th
that the order had been placed once all the homeowners
had approved their design template and information.

Coincidentally as of this weekend we have reached the
4 week mark which is the earliest estimate that Erie
provided for us. Due to heavy summer orders, their
estimate was 4 to 6 weeks to produce the plaques.

It was my plan to call Erie this Monday(today) for
this very reason, so your email is very timely.

Given that it is 1am right now though, I can't give
you an answer. But hopefully by tomorrow I'll have
some news from Erie.

Regardless, we should be very close, which is very
exciting.

All,

I just spoke with Erie, and the plaques shipped on the
16th. So I should receive them any day, possibly even
today.

I have received payment from just about everyone, so
once I have the plaques in hand I'll try to drop by
and drop them off personally. If I miss someone, I'll
just drop an email.

It seems that old house renovation is becoming more and more of a
"hobby" or lifestyle choice for many Americans these days beyond just
simple housing.

CNN's living section had a brief pep-talk on investigating the history

We do have several homes in the neighborhood that have apartments, but
I don't know of any specifically that are available.

But perhaps someone here may know of an available garage apartment or
rental home. Also someone may know of a complex they could recommend.

Sanford rentals seem to be generally more relaxed with regard to pets
than some larger markets, but having a large dog can sometimes indeed
be a challenge.

You might also try Craig's List and the City Data Forums(just Google
"city data forum" and go to the state/city area).

Good luck!

I don't usually go out of my way to recommend any particular magazine,
but this month's "Old House Journal"(October 2007) really is loaded
with a lot more than ads for overpriced reproduction light fixtures =P

It's got several really useful and relevant articles on:

- Energy efficiency issues
- Old windows, and pros/cons of different solutions, including
complete replacement and storms(including efficiency and cost comparisons)
- Background to typical historic brick failure issues, and tips on repair
- Tile matching and renovation issues, specifically kitchen/bath
- Geothermal heating/cooling (I am pretty interested in this one)

.... and a nice article on "bungalow" style houses.

I think this issue is definitely a keeper.

If any of these subjects pique your interest, you might consider
checking this issue out.

Cheers
Al

Uploaded the wrong version, so check the following email for the
correct name and location of the file.

It is a very interested comparison of window types, and options and
costs for improving energy efficiency. This was scanned from the
current issue(Oct 2007) of "Old House Journal".

As is often recommended, it turns out that the most cost effective
option for old windows is an installation of quality storms that both
preserve the appearance of the original windows and come very close to
the energy efficiency of modern double-glazed windows.

A fella on OHW is putting together an instruction package for building
your own low cost real wood storm windows.

This is fortuitous as we approach the end of Summer, and people start
to think about heating costs.

It is also coincidental that I posted a scanned image from the October
2007 issue of "Old House Journal" magazine that cites the advantages
both in cost and energy efficiency of using storm windows over
existing old windows versus wholesale replacement of the entire unit.

That file is located in our group's file section here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/historic-sanford-nc/files/window-efficiency-small.\

The article on OHW showing the DIY storms is still a work in progress,
and is located here:

http://www.oldhouseweb.com/newBB/topic-13686.shtml

And if any of you have old original wood screens as I do, they in
theory could be converted to wooden storms by simply replacing the
screening material with glass after routing out a groove to accept the
glass. I've been toying with this idea, and think it might be feasible.

Anyway, I thought this might be useful for those that might have been
considering storms.

Cheers

I too always wondered if you could take screens and then convert to
storm windows for the winter. Here is a question?
How would you store the screen for spring and summer the next year?
And also for a lighter weight could you use heavy weight plexi instead
of glass? Would that work also?

Well, it would obviously complicate the issue, but I
guess one could route out an insert into the original
frame that could accommodate a subframe.

You could then build two subframes for each original
screen frame, one with screening and one with glass
installed.

Then you could just "snap"(more likely screw) these
subframes into the main frame when it was time to swap
them out.

This would add a good deal of materials and complexity
of course, and may even make the argument at that
point for simply building dedicated new wooden storms.

But you could do it and retain your original wood
screen frames, and have ultimate flexibility.

You could certainly use plexiglass, but my experience
with plexi is that its clarity and structural rigidity
is far inferior to actual glass, and some types do
suffer from UV exposure and weathering.

I think you'd be able to tell even from a distance as
plexi would be less transparent, and likely somewhat
wavy(not in a good way). It is also much more
susceptible to scratching, even from careful washing,
so over time it would get even cloudier.

But you could use it.

Al

P.S.

Thank you for replying Tammy. I've been wondering if
I've just been chatting with myself on here for a
while now =P
