[Posting this for Mia Roozen, neighborhood friend]

Hello,
I wanted to let you know that our school is having an open house for families interested in kindergarten or first grade for next year on January 23rd. The Open House is a really great opportunity to get an overview of the school and its educational philosophy, community, and more.

If you haven't heard of KapKa, it is an independent school that is committed to progressive education, integrated arts and music, and social-emotional development, which is located right across the street from the Woodland Park Zoo. Class sizes are capped at 15 students, and the adult: child ratio is 1:7.  KapKa is a cooperative school, which means it has a great community of involved families, and also that tuition is less than half the price of comparable private schools. You can find more information at the website: www.kapkaschool.org.

We've been really happy at KapKa and definitely recommend that you check it out. I'd be glad to answer any questions you have about our experience there -

If you're interested, here are the details on the Open House:

Date: Saturday, Jan. 23rd
Time: 2-4pm
Location: KapKa school at 4918 Linden Ave N (map: http://tinyurl.com/yzn97r5)
No RSVP needed; just show up!

If you aren't able to make the Open House, you can also sign up for a school tour by emailing our parent registrar, Pam Ruggles, at pam_ruggles@....

Best,

Hi

My bicycle was stolen from the bike racks at the Columbia City light rail
station today.

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the bike. The bike is a red
Specialized Stump Jumper (early 90's model). Some distinguishing features: a
rack on the back of the bicycle, a green bell pepper bell on the front
handlebars, and no rear brake.

Am posting in hopes somebody might see the bike laying around the neighborhood.
If so, then please contact me.

By the way, does anyone know if Columbia City has a group similar to ours?
Would like to pass along my plea.

Thanks!

Good Morning all,

I have received a message asking to remove movd_movd@... from the HCBA yahoo group and I have done so.  I apologize for not realizing that I should remove that poster from the group sooner.  I have been thinking that we should drop the yahoo group and sign up with a Blog/website combo and would like to get feedback on this idea and to learn if there is anyone out there that would like to assist with a project of this sort.  In addition, I thought we could combineHCBA and HCNA information distribution and dissemination in this way.  I do not believe we should combine the groups themselves, but we should be doing "committee work" together such as this, which for instance, could be referred to as a job for a communications committee.  Please let me know if you have time, energy and interest in helping the Hillman City community stayed informed by writing small news articles and associated tasks.

Thanks so much!

Columbia City - Arts In Motion, SE Seattle's community school of the arts, is preparing an experience for their audience unlike anything they've ever presented before.  "Freedom Festival", a newly created pageant of music, art, dance, and spoken word will be presented by Arts In Motion students and faculty, partner schools and SeedArts at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center 3515 S. Alaska St. on Saturday, Jan. 23rd, 7pm.

Embracing the spirit of MLK Day Celebrations, this event will explore different aspects of freedom through voice, ensemble, movement and color, blending multiple art forms into a thematic journey.

"Freedom Festival" features performances of reggae, klezmer, brass band and jazz.  Marimbas and drums will echo of Africa, and young people from our very own neighborhood will sing songs of freedom. Audience members too may even participate in the celebration.

"It's so exciting seeing everyone in the community, students, parents, businesses, and other nonprofit organizations come together in true unity of spirit. We're all pulling for this totally kick-ass show!" says AIM staff member John J. Hoosyerface.

Hi All,
Do you know if there's a list similar to this one for Rainier Beach? though I
still have significant ties with the Hillman City community, I just moved to
Rainier Beach (onto a boat!), and am excited to connect with my current
neighborhood.

Thanks!

STOLEN BIKES - WE Need Your Help
Dear Friends, We are sad to report that over the last few weeks donated bikes have been stolen from the yard behind Bike Works. The stolen bicycles were destined to be put back into the community in May at this year’s Kids’ Bike Swap. We lost a large pile of bikes – an estimated $1,500 value – that have been worked on since September during our volunteer repair nights and youth Earn-a-Bike classes and drop-in hours. With the KBS now just 4 months away, this is a big setback for us. We are reaching out to our community to help! Most of the bikes that were stolen were “adult” sized bikes for older youth. (These bikes are harder for us to collect, take longer to fix, and are worth more money.) In the next three months, we hope to build our pile of bikes back up to what it was! Here is what we need:

  • Good condition adult bikes - smaller mountain bikes (26” wheels) and road bikes (700 cm. wheels) especially.

  • Good condition 24” wheeled bikes. To donate a bike, email Donald at recycling@... <mailto:recycling@...> or call our shop during business hours at 206.725.9408 x3

  • Volunteers who can repair bikes – specifically volunteers with shop level mechanic expertise. If you are interested in repairing bikes, contact Davey at volunteers@... <mailto:volunteers@...> or 206.725.9408 x2

  • Any other donation (monetary or material) that can help us offset our loss. To donate to Bike Works, click here <http://cts.vresp.com/c/?BikeWorks/936e966eff/fe447917e5/e11f249bb3/ORGID2=911753062> .

For now, we’ve improved the security in the backyard with more locks and tarps, as well as barbed wire (an additional incurred cost of $900). We have also spoken with neighbor businesses to help us keep an eye out when staff aren’t here, and are continuing to strategize about a long-term solution! We’d love to hear ideas if you have them.

2010 CLASSES HaVE BEGUN

On a more positive note, our Earn-a-Bike classes, adult repair classes and partnerships have begun for 2010! Over the winter a volunteer helped us build a fourth workbench in our classroom, allowing us to increase the size of our classes and work with more young people. (Thank you, Lanham!)    Our Street Burners rides' club, which is free to all of Bike Works' class and camp graduates until they are 18, kicked the new decade off with a Bike Works Bake-Off (see photo). Street Burners activities -- which range from BMX riding to bike-polo to neighborhood rides to bike art -- are democratically decided on by the young people.
Bike SHOP: WAREHOUSE SALE

The Bike Works Warehouse has too much stuff!  We are having a big Bike Works Warehouse Sale on Saturday, January 23, 2010, from 11am to 5pm. We will be selling parts and as-is bikes for low, low prices!  The sale will allow us to clear up space in the classroom and in the warehouse, as well as raise revenue for our youth programs. Bikes for as low as $10, parts for as low as $1! All bikes will be sold as-is (meaning that the sale bikes will not be "ride-ready"). Cash only, please. Spread the word and come check it out!

Nationwide Survey Shows Power of "Buy Local" Campaigns

More holiday shoppers deliberately sought out locally owned businesses this year, according to a national survey of more than 1,800 independent businesses. The survey, conducted by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, a nonprofit research organization, in partnership with several business organizations, found that holiday sales for independent retailers were up an average of 2.2%, compared with overall retail sales, which were down 0.3% in December.

Hillman City’s Valentine Heart Hunt & Annual Town Hall

Heart Hunt in the Heart of Rainier Valley

(Seattle 2010) – Come and join us in a search for hearts in the Heart of Rainier Valley!  Business owners in the South Seattle neighborhood have organized a heart hunt focused to help draw attention to the Hillman City business district  in the Heart of the Valley.  To emphasize the pride we have in Rainier Valley and our history as one of its founding communities, we are putting paper hearts made by local school children out in the community participants to find and bring to Hillman City Town Hall ,” says community  leader, Denise Gloster.

The Hillman Heart Hunt will take place during the week leading up to HCBA’s Fourth Annual Town Hall on February 13th from 10am to 12noon at Rainier Avenue Church, 5900 Rainier Av S., Hillman City, Seattle.  Gloster explains that community volunteers will place paper hearts around Hillman City the first week of February.  On February 3rd clues about where to find the hearts will be available on The Rainier Valley Post web site.  “We hope that couples seeking a fun and romantic activity will take a stroll and look for hearts, and we expect parents and children will find it an exciting romp around the neighborhood.”

“Those who find the hearts should bring them to our Town Hall meeting where they will double as raffle tickets to win prizes donated by local businesses,” continues Gloster.  “We hope the heart hunt will help people in the neighborhood get to know each other AND give them added reason to attend our Town Hall.”

“Town Hall is a time to review our accomplishments and gather input on work for the future.  It’s also a fun, casual way to build relationships and share ideas for keeping our neighborhood vital, strong and unified,” says Brian Lettich, HCBA’s vice president.  “The first thing we do is mingle and munch; then we’ll announce our Heritage Neighbor Awards.  We give the awards each year to people who make Hillman City a better place to live and work.”

Gloster adds, “After that, we’ll hold the heart raffle and then we will conduct a short survey and open the floor to anyone who would like to speak and help us determine priorities for the Business Association in the coming year.”  Lettich continues, “Over HCBA's four year existence, based on what we heard at our town halls, we increased the number of free, family-friendly activities that we sponsor and worked to bring streetscape improvements to the business district.  Every year we learn of new ways to bring our community together, so I am guessing we will be encouraged to keep up the good work!”

Subject: Invitation to the Mayor's Youth & Family workshops

Hi everyone:

This is an invitation from the Mayor’s Office regarding workshops for the Youth and Family Initiative.

You’re Invited

Dear fellow Seattleites,
Mayor Mike McGinn invites you to participate in the Youth and Families Initiative, a major initiative announced during his inaugural address.

The children and families of our city are facing many difficult challenges. As a community, we need to talk about what we want for our kids and how best to create a healthy, positive and equitable environment for all families in our city.

Let’s start a discussion together and come up with a plan that works.
Please join us in attending one of five workshops, where trained facilitators will lead participants through the beginnings of this group discussion. If you are interested in volunteering with the Initiative, please contact Sol Villarreal in the Mayor’s Office at sol.villarreal@... or 206-233-2656.

The five venues and dates will be:
February 22 – Rainier Community Center 7:00-8:30 p.m.
March 1 – Northgate Elementary School 7:00-8:30 p.m.
March 8 – Van Asselt Elementary School 7:00-8:30 p.m.
March 15 – Denny Middle School 7:00-8:30 p.m.
March 22 – Garfield Community Center 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Activities for kids older than three years of age and light refreshments will be provided at each meeting. If English is not your primary language and you would like translation or interpretation, please notify the Department of Neighborhoods at 684-0464 so we can work to provide the best resources available.

It is only together that we can solve the deep, complex problem of how to create an equitable community for our great city’s youth and families. There is no one solution, no one program or person who can point our neighborhoods in the right direction.
We ask that you join us at the beginning of this discussion so that we may all work together toward the common goal of a stronger community.

Sincerely,

Office of Mayor Mike McGinn

Subject: Energy Disclosure Ordinance identifies energy waste, gives property owners and tenants tools to improve energy efficiency

SEATTLE - Mayor Mike McGinn today approved a new ordinance to identify energy-wasting buildings.  The Energy Disclosure Ordinance, unanimously approved by the Seattle City Council on January 25, 2010, will give City residents and property owners the tools they need to make necessary improvements.  City officials say the new ordinance is critical to meeting the City’s energy goals, while commercial property owners and energy efficiency contractors point to the economic and business benefits of the new policy.

The new Ordinance requires large commercial and multi-family property owners in Seattle to annually measure, or benchmark, energy use and provide the City with ratings to allow comparison across different buildings. Building owners will also be required to share energy usage and ratings with prospective buyers, tenants and lenders during the sale, lease or financing of properties.

Energy disclosure is one of several measures recommended by the City’s Green Building Task Force aimed at reducing energy consumption in existing buildings throughout the city by 20 percent. Today marks the first anniversary of when the Task Force provided those recommendations.

“You can’t manage what you don’t measure,” said Seattle City Council Chair Richard Conlin. “Energy disclosure is a key first step to tap into the gold mine of opportunities to save energy and money while improving the City’s existing building stock. I’d like to thank all the members of the Green Building Task Force and other stakeholders who helped create this new ordinance that will save energy and create new jobs in Seattle.”

Commercial property managers already benchmarking buildings say measuring energy use is critical to keeping costs down and staying competitive in this tight real estate market.

“The City will work with property owners and tenants to make sure they have the resources needed to make improvements,” said McGinn. “I commend the City Council for their leadership in approving this milestone in our city’s goal of improved energy efficiency.”

“Energy costs are one of the largest expenses facing property owners and tenants. Energy spending is also an expense that can be actively managed and controlled,” said Christian Gunter, Vice President of Responsible Property Investing at Kennedy Associates, a Seattle-based institutional real estate investment advisor. “Energy-efficient buildings cost less to operate, attract top tenants, and create value for building ownership. With this new ordinance, prospective buyers and tenants will gain new information needed to factor energy use into their decisions about where to invest, live and work. If you are not monitoring, benchmarking and managing energy use, you will simply be less competitive in the market-place.”

As more building owners and managers realize the market benefits of measuring and managing energy use, more are seeking ways to improve building energy performance, from no-and low-cost measures such as retro-commissioning, to deep building retrofits – all of which are contributing to the explosive growth in green building and energy services industries in Seattle and across the U.S.

“We believe that as more building owners work to bring energy use down and make their properties more attractive places to live and work, job opportunities will flourish for companies and contractors in the energy efficiency business” said Ash Awad, with McKinstry, a leading performance contracting company based in the Northwest.

Seattle’s Energy Disclosure Ordinance builds on a state law passed last year to include multi-family dwellings and require annual reporting of building energy performance to the City.

Hello Hillman City,

I just realized this didn't go out to y'all -- we're having a community design meeting tonight to plan a little plaza at the North entry of Orca K-8 @ Whitworth -- at the bottom of the ramp that goes up to the playground, 45th & Dawson. The meeting is at 7 pm in the Orca Library, 3rd floor.

The attached flyer has more info, and shows a drawing of one possible design. As you can see, it's a small space -- this is not a huge project, will mostly affect the people living within a stone's throw of the site, and they all got this flyer delivered by hand last week... But I did want to cast the net a little wider just in case other people would like to contribute to the process. If you have ideas or opinions or concerns or questions about this project, please don't hesitate to contact me directly. We want to get input from as many people as possible.

Again, I apologize for getting this out so late. We'll be having another meeting next month to review the design that will (hopefully) emerge from tonight's brainstorming session. We'll be sure to get the word out about that one in a more timely fashion.

Thanks,

Mikala Woodward
