Gang, I don't ask for prayers very much, but I felt I needed to on this.   My two best boyhood friends and their sister could really use any and all
prayers that can get. Below is a summary, by Mike about his brother Jim, himself and sister Ann.  Just one of these happenings
would be a Wallop, but all three happening within a week of each other is almost too much to bear. Jim is 71, Mike 69 and Ann 65.

Thank You,  and Merry Christmas to all.  JIMMY D.

Jimmy D.

Just thought youwould want o know, Jim had 4 by-pass operations about 3 weeks ago. His breathing and movement are still slow.
A week later, I passed out, result of a seizure. I spent 5 days in hos, came out, went to a heart DOC. spent two days, then 3 days later,
had an areterigram.I had a stint put in one of my arteries, one was too blocked. the other has an ? in each leg.  Hopefully, they can clean
thore in 6 months. Our sister, ann is in the hospital, hopefully with something minor. All these things happened within a week of each other.
We seem to be ok and are looking forward to Christmas. Hope you and Jody are over your illenesses

Merry Christmas,

Mike

"Twice I had the feeling, which I have talked about to other anglers and they have had it too, of a sudden and very strong anticipation of catching a fish that it amounts to certainty. I suppose it is partly the harmony of effective presentation when everything else is auspicious, so that a take seems in that moment to be the only feasible conclusion. But it's not quit as simple as that, it's more like a shaft of intuition. It must, logically, be an illusion;  you tend to remember it when it works and forget it when it doesn't. But, for all that, it's a curious experience."

"J R Hartley Casts Again"

P.S. I've had that same experience on the golf course, seeing in my mind's eye exactly where my ball is going to land on every shot.   It's like driving along and in deep thought only to suddenly realize you've gone several miles and can't recall anything from those miles.   Basketball players get that same feeling when they shoot and know they'll make the basket.  It's called " Being in the Zone."

"The truth is that live-bait fishing has a long and noble history. Live bait was totally unknown to the early caveman, who had to make do with a rather limited assortment of dry flies, nymphs, and a few streamers. One day, whether out of exasperation or simple impatience, a caveman made a backcast with a gray hackle he had not bothered to remove from a sage hen. Instantly, it was taken by a brontosaurus. The caveman was elated by his discovery, even though it was several centuries before anyone learned how to take the brontosaurus off the hook." Patrick McManus "They Shoot Canoes Don't They"

"Some time ago I was brought back to earth by an incident in one of my fishing schools. I usually show a movie call 'The Way of the Trout,' which concludes with a strong plea for catch-and-release fishing. right after the final dramatic scene, which ends with the release of a large rainbow trout, an eleven-year-old boy impulsively jumped up and said, "I wouldn't let that fish go!' As he sat down, a little embarrassed, he explained,'I wouldn't let that fish go. I've never caught a fish that big.' In the awkward silence that followed, I realized that most of the people in that room - and, for that matter, he vast majority of anglers - wouldn't have let that fish go, either. I don't remember exactly what I said to that class and to that young man, but I do remember feeling awfully inadequate." Mel Kreiger in "The Essentials of Fly Fishing"

Sorry, forgot the author.  The quote below is from Tom Brennan's book.  of
same name. Book of amusing stories on life in Alaska.

Jimmy D. Moore wrote:
" 'Over the years,' he once wrote,'great minds have brooded about whether fishermen were crazier than golfers.' There is much to be said for both sides. Golfers spend hours knocking an innocent little ball across the landscape, often getting wet and numb in the process, and return home with nothing to show for their efforts. Fishermen, on the other hand, spend hours dragging an innocent herring through the water, often getting wet and numb in the process, and return home with nothing to show for their efforts. On successful days in both sports, joy reigns supreme because the participant has triumphed through enormous odds, but at least the fisherman's rush comes from outsmarting something that has a nervous system." Jimmy

I reel left-handed as the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for me.
But probably the biggest reason is that I always fished spinning gear,
not baitcasting gear as I was growing up. = left handed reeling. I know
you also fish conventional tackle. Try using a spinning rod for a while.

Jimmy, the Austin Fly Fishers are lining up our meeting speakers for the
next year. You interested in talking sometime? Subject of your choice as
long as its related to fishing.

I'm right-handed and I've always reeled right handed after changing the rod from right hand to left I know that in the time it takes to change the rod from right hand to left hand has cost me a fish or two, but try as I may, I just can't get the hang of reeling left-handed.  I've had this trouble with my bait casting reel but it doesn't seem to affect how quick I strike at a bass.

I've sat at my tying bench with a reel attached to a reel seat held the handle in my right hand and reeled left-handed until I'm blue in the face. After about 5 minutes, reeling left-handed seems natural, BUT  . . . . when I get on the stream and a fish takes, I fall back into the switching rod from right to left hand and then reeling with my right hand.

I'll try doubly hard to reel left-handed on the next fish, but even if I don't make the switch, my reeling is an uncoordinated jerky motion.

Maybe I've just got a mental block.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

"Immediately you become aware of a fish, drop the point of the rod, let go of any loose line in your hand, pull off more line from the reel, step forward - In short, do everything that will help create a big belly in the line well downstream of the fish. One of you mentioned eels the other day and I came across this quote about them. Had no idea that eels would rise to flies.

"If we carry purism to a logical conclusion, to do it right {fishing} you'd have to live naked in a cave, hit your trout on the head with rocks, and eat them raw. But, so as not to violate another essential element of the fly-fishing tradition, the rocks would have to be quarried in England and cost $300 each." John Gierach
