Re: [hegel-intro] Haushalter`s "Mrs. Eddy Purloins from Hegel"

Stephen,

Yes, it's amusing that Mary Baker Edddy, founder of "Christian Science"
Church, quoted material from the Hegelian, Francis Lieber, without giving
him credit.

However, it remains debatable whether "Hegelianism can be grafted onto
the science of healing," or whether "the concepts of Hegel and his German
contemporaries at last suggested a rational basis for mental healing."

Bringing LaoTze and Heraclitus into the debate adds little to it.  The question
must be whether Hegel ever suggested such a thing.

We must also ask about the accuracy of Lieber`s portrait of Hegel`s religious
views.  Certainly Lieber was right on the central point - Hegel was never an
atheist. For Hegel, God the Absolute Idea, is the origin of all Ideas.  There is
only one God, and God is Spirit.  Lieber sees all this clearly.  Also, we
individuals are not lost in the infinitude of God; rather, we are found there.

However, Lieber does not portray Hegel accurately in other points.  For
example, Hegel hardly values the 'infinitude of being', which is far too
abstract.
Hegel prefers to contemplate God in terms of Becoming, in the changes lived
by the Spiritual Jesus, in the Fall and in the Redemption of that Fall.

Furthermore, Lieber treats the problem of Evil too glibly for Hegel.  Hegel
dwells
upon it at length, for the whole key to religion rests in the conflict of Good
and
Evil, and in a strict monotheism, for Hegel, God must be at the root of all
Creation, including Evil.  This problem has plagued theologians for centuries,
and Hegel's solution was quite unpopular.

So, Mary Baker Eddy didn't exactly purloin from Hegel, but from Lieber, yet
Lieber was not the most accurate painter of Hegel's likeness.

Best regards,
--Paul Trejo, MA
