From International Service Learning, which is highly recommended by students who have participated:
International Service Learning has set its 2009 Teams Schedule. We have travel dates available for Quarter and Semester schools. Our new program to the Dominican Republic is proving to be an excellent opportunity for our team members. Experiencing a third world country, meeting loving people, learning, serving AND observing the history of the Americas on the island of Hispanola.
We are also looking for students interested in becoming Campus Representatives for ISL. This is an excellent way to reduce their cost for the trip. Anyone interested in reducing their cost in this way please contact Kyle Winston at kyle@... or Pepper Tucker at pepper@... .
Our 2008-2009 Schedule is available on our website at www.ISLonline.org . Just click on Team Schedule. We have teams scheduled throughout the year. Thanks to our students helping us staff these teams we estimate we’ll be serving approximately 35,000 of the underserved with varying levels of health care—thanks for the partnership!
ISL sends medical/dent/opt/public health/PT/vet/pharmaceutical teams to countries in Latin America, Central America, and Africa. We include pre-health students on our teams as a way of preparing the next generation of international medical caregivers. Students receive supervised hands-on experience, health related seminars, and financial sponsorship.
Listings of university, professional, and student references available upon request. Over a 14 year period we’ve fielded over three hundred teams and annually provide health care for 15,000 of the underserved.

Interested in Osteopathic Medicine as a Career? Read this...
Hello Pre-Med Students!
Preparing for a career in medicine is a grueling process. Believe me, I understand! My name is Crystal Lenz and I am a 2nd year osteopathic medical student and the current National Director of Pre-SOMA, the undergraduate division of SOMA (Student Osteopathic Medical Association), which is the student affiliate organization of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
Of the many challenges of pursuing a career in medicine, one of the first things you need to consider is what type of doctor you wish to become. Consider the relationship that you hope to have with your future patients and the tools that you plan to use in order to help your patients overcome illness and maintain good health and quality of life.
Now what if I told you that you could add an extra tool to your doctor's bag? Osteopathic medicine does just that! Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.'s) are fully licensed physicians that can practice in any specialty area, just like an MD. In addition to learning everything that allopathic (MD) students learn, osteopathic (DO) students receive an additional 200+ hours of training in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM). OMM is a specialized hands-on approach to diagnosing and treating nearly any ailment that a patient may present with. OMM includes manipulation of not only the musculoskeletal system, but the lymphatic, circulatory and autonomic nervous systems as well, capable of activating self-healing mechanisms in essentially every area of the body! In addition to OMM, another aspect of Osteopathic medicine that sets it apart from allopathic medicine is the holistic approach that D.O.'s are taught to take when approaching patient care. Appreciating the multi-faceted nature of illness, D.O.'s are taught to value the interconnectedness of the human mind, body and spirit and address this interconnectedness when treating patients.
If this sounds like the sort of medicine that you hope to practice and you would like more information as well as assistance from current osteopathic students and practicing D.O.'s as you embark on your journey toward a career in osteopathic medicine, please consider joining Pre-SOMA today! If your school does not yet have a Pre-SOMA chapter, this is a wonderful opportunity to set yourself apart from other pre-med students by chartering a new Pre-SOMA chapter on your campus!! Please see attached files for membership application and necessary documents for chartering a new Pre-SOMA chapter. Feel free to contact me at any time at presoma@... with questions or concerns, and subscribe to the Pre-SOMA list serve in order to receive periodic updates from National SOMA: http://www.studentdo.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/list/presoma/ <http://www.studentdo.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/list/presoma/>
Best of luck in your endeavors and I hope to hear back from you soon!

Please read the following information about this student-run
program from Stanford. This is very interesting.
Marti
To whom it may concern,
Do you know someone who is considering
medicine or wants some clinical experience? I just want to inform you
of an awesome student-run program from Stanford University. It
is open to other college undergraduates. I have been part of this
program for almost a year and it has been nothing but beneficial.
Please spread the word and have a great day :)
Sincerely,
Erika B.

PILLS Public Relations Chair Officer 2008-2009
Dear UC Santa Cruz Career Center,
UC Berkeley's Pre-pharmacy Informational
Learning and Leadership Society (PILLS) would like to invite students
from your campus to the Third Annual Northern California
Pre-Pharmacy Symposium (NCPPS). NCPPS is a great way for people
interested in pharmacy to learn about the field of pharmacy from
pharmacists, pharmacy school professors, professionals, and pharmacy
students. NCPPS will host many speakers from pharmacy schools in
California such as UCSF, USC, UOP, UCSD, Western University, and more.
There will also be speakers from out of state pharmacy schools in
Michigan and Massachusetts. Additionally, there will be several panels
about pharmacy careers and hot topics in the field of pharmacy to
expand everyone's knowledge of this diverse and dynamic field!
NCPPS will be on Saturday, April 11, 2009
from 9 am - 5 pm at Barrows Hall at the UC Berkeley
Campus. Snack, lunch, and drinks will be provided!
