Aloha all...

Just a reminder that Waimea Community Chorus will begin its 16th holiday season
with registration and rehearsal Tuesday evening, August 18th at St. James
Episcopal Church in Waimea. New members of the chorus are always welcome, as
long as they can plan to reliably attend the rehearsals every Tuesday from 7 - 9
at the Church. The fall season will lead to our 16th Annual Holiday Concerts
on December 11/12/13 at the Parker School Theatre in Waimea.

Our Director, Barbara Kopra, has already put together a complete and exciting
program for the show, which will lean towards the traditional this year, but
with interesting and unusual selections that will add variety and zest to the
program.

Registration will begin at 6:45 pm at the Church; please enlist your friends if
you think they would enjoy the experience of singing with a great and friendly
group of people!

For those who don't already know... the church reversed the direction of the
surrounding driveway, so the "Entrance" is now on the Kawaihae side of the
Church, and you will exit on the Waimea side. Be prepared and don't turn in the
wrong way and get unexpectedly cozy with some exiting vehicle!

Here is a great choral presentation of a pop song. The choir begins by
simulating a rain storm! Be sure to turn your volume up as it starts out
rather quietly. You'll be surprised what song it is, considering it's a
Serbian choir! http://videos.komando.com/2009/06/18/african-thunderstorm/
Maybe it will inspire you for the new choir season!

See you Tuesday evening....for more info contact Miguel at 938-3062

On June 12, 13, and 14 forty-seven local performers will don fedoras, straw
hats, bonnets, and boas to celebrate the best of Broadway's Golden Age, the
magnificent musicals of the 1950's. Beginning with a medley from Frank
Loesser's comic fable GUYS AND DOLLS and ending with selections from Jule Styne
and Steven Sondheim's tribute to vaudeville and burlesque, GYPSY, the 40-member
Waimea Community Chorus, five instrumentalists, and two actors will take
audiences on a spirited – and sentimental – journey through the fabulous decade.

Featured musicals will include THE KING AND I, PAINT YOUR WAGON, THE PAJAMA
GAME, PETER PAN, MY FAIR LADY, THE MUSIC MAN, WEST SIDE STORY, and THE SOUND OF
MUSIC. Selections will range from well-known favorites "Everything's Coming Up
Roses," "Climb Every Mountain," and "Seventy-Six Trombones," to lesser-known
showstoppers "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway."

At the heart of FABULOUS 50'S ON BROADWAY is Waimea Community Chorus, under the
direction of Barbara Kopra. This season's ensemble consists of twelve sopranos,
thirteen altos, five tenors, five baritones, and four basses. Most are Waimea
residents, although members do come from as far away as Pahoa.

Accompanying the Chorus – and adding that unmistakable Broadway pizzazz – will
be instrumentalists Everett Knowles (piano), Jo Gargiulo (drums), Sid Thompson
(bass guitar), Terry Warner (trombone), David Clausnitzer (trumpet), and Charlie
Peebles, (saxophone).

Actor/narrators Robyn Duquesne Fichter and Julie Barreto will complete the
entertainment. As former musical theatre performers cleaning up the prop room
in an old theatre, they will reminisce about the standout shows they loved and
helped create.

Chorus and production director Kopra, who teaches performing arts at Hawaii
Preparatory Academy, holds a master's degree in music and voice from the
University of Oregon. This is her fifth year leading the Chorus.

FABULOUS 50'S ON BROADWAY will be at Parker School Theatre in Waimea, Friday and
Saturday June 12 and 13th at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, June 14 at 3 PM. Ticket
prices are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, $8 for children, and
may be purchased from a chorus member, from the Waimea General Store, or at the
door. For information call 885-1818 or 938-3062.

"What the Butler Saw"

and continuing this Saturday, Sunday, and next weekend as well.....Friday and
Saturday performances begin at 7:30 pm
and Sunday matinees begin at 3:00 pm

*please note that this production contains mature themes and is not intended for
children*
Waimea Community Theatre will present Joe Orton's British farce, "What the
Butler Saw" beginning May 22, at the historic Parker Theatre in Waimea. John
Sucke (who also directs this production) plays Dr. Prentice, the respectable
head of a psychiatric clinic with a not-so-respectable bent for seduction. WCT
newcomer Renee Rudzinski plays Geraldine, a hapless would-be secretary, who
initially cooperates with Dr. Prentice's unorthodox interview techniques,
including a straightjacket. Confusion and mayhem ensue when Dr. Prentice's wife
(Anjalisa Aitken) decides to pop in unexpectedly at the office provoking a
frantic attempt by the good Doctor to hide evidence of his indiscretions from
her. Meanwhile, Mrs. Prentice (whose own fondness for sex is matched only by
her fondness for gin) has herself already been drawn into a rendez-vous with a
hotel bellboy (Victor Pangan). Enter Dr. Rance (Luke Aitken) a government
bureaucrat who is able to turn mere confusion into total chaos, and a police
sergeant (Bill Cruise) with his own agenda. With a little cross-dressing and
ever-escalating zaniness thrown in, the audience soon becomes aware of "What the
Butler Saw"!

Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, and will be
available from Waimea General Store, from the cast, or at the door one-half hour

"To be or not to be....that is the question"
Waimea Community Theatre will be bringing Shakespeare's classic tragedy, "Hamlet" to the stage for a 3-weekend run beginning Friday, February 27 and ending Sunday, March 15.
(Please note that there is no performance on Friday March 14.)

Director Felicity Johnson is pleased to announce the opening of Waimea Community Theatre's spring production of Shakespeare's classic tragedy, "Hamlet", which will begin its three-weekend run on Friday, February 27.  Friday's opening features WCT's traditional after-show pupu reception for audience, cast and crew.

During Shakespeare's time, "Hamlet" was one of The Bard's most often-performed plays, and to this day, the tale seems to enjoy an unending fascination for audiences and readers. It has become a staple in most high school English classes.

When Danish Prince Hamlet (played by Kini DePontes) returns from his studies abroad, he finds his father dead and his mother, Queen Gertrude (Kestrel Bishop), married to his uncle, Claudius (John Sucke). After being visited by the ghost of his dead father (David Payne), describing the circumstances of his own murder, Hamlet is thrown  into a tailspin of  revenge and deceipt, and he and the people around him begin to question his sanity. WCT's production features Sarah Weiner as Hamlet's love, Ophelia.

Waimea Community Theatre will bring "Hamlet" to life with performances February 27, 28, and March 1, &  6, 7, 8,  &  14 and 15,  at the Historic Parker School Theatre in Waimea, with Friday and Saturday night performances at 7:30pm and Sunday matinees at 3:00 pm. (Please note that there is no performance on Friday March 14.)  Ticket prices will be $12.00 for adults and $10.00 for seniors. In recognition of the importance of the play in high school literature, a special student rate of $5.00 will be offered for students of any age. Tickets will be available in advance from Waimea General Store, from cast members, and will be available at the door one-half hour prior to performances. For more information, contact Director, Felicity Johnson, at 938-4603.

Brighton Beach Memoirs - November 14 - 23, 2008
at Parker School Theatre - Waimea

Aloha, Performing Arts Supporters!

If you're a fan of Neil Simon, you won't want to miss Waimea Community Theatre's production of "Brighton Beach Memoirs", opening November 14, and continuing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for two weekends thru November 23. Set in Brooklyn, New York's Brighton Beach in 1937, the semi-autobiographical coming-of-age comedy is the first play in what is known as Neil Simon's "Eugene Trilogy". ("Biloxi Blues" and "Broadway Bound" were the other two in the series). "Brighton Beach Memoirs" tells the story of Eugene Jerome, a 15-year-old boy who is just coming to terms with girls, his family, and life in general. The other characters in the small household include Eugene's older brother, Stanley, (whom Eugene idolizes), their parents Kate and Jack, as well as Kate's sister Blanche, and her two daughters, Nora (whom Eugene develops intimate feelings towards) and Laurie. Eugene experiences puberty, sexual awakening, and search for identity as he tries to deal with his family, and thus WCT recommends this play for mature audiences.

Performances will be held Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinees at 3:00 pm, at the historic Parker School Theatre in Waimea. Tickets are available at the door one-half hour prior to performances, and are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.

Kâmau

Bare & Core Expression (BACE) will present a local Hawaii play titled "Kâmau" written by Alani Apio in August at Ulua Theatre in Volcano Village.  This production will be Bare & Core Expression's second theater production.  BACE strives to present diverse voices and expressions.  For its theater productions, it focuses on multicultural and local Hawaii plays.

The play tells a tragic story of a Hawaiian family who is torn between preserving the tradition and surviving in the modern world.  The play unfolds a story of an unfortunate family through three cousins.  The production features a group of talented local actors.  One of three cousins will be performed by a well-known actor, Jason Scott Lee.  Lee's acting career in films is well known to many.  He is the founder of the Ulua Theatre at Pu Mu.  At Pu Mu, conservation, fishing, farming, and reforestation is emphasized as well as the arts, to blend the aspects of conscious living, food as medicine, and the observation of nature in order to provide inspiration, education, and healing.

The main lead character, Alika, will be performed by Christian Pa, a recent graduate of Kamehameha School.  He performed in Kamehameha School's musical productions, including Jesus Christ Superstar.  This will be his first appearance in community theater productions.  Ron Serrao will also portray one of the cousins.  He has done numerous local Hawaii play performances on the Big Island as well as for Kumu Kahua Theatre on Oahu.  Some of his acting credits for TV series are "One West Waikiki" with Cheryl Ladd, and "Marker" with Richard Greico.  Other veteran actors in the show include Desiree Cruz, Laura Caswell, Susan McGovern, Angela Nakamura, Jay Robinson, and Kalani Spain who have been in many theater productions and performances on the Big Island.  This local premiere of Kamau is directed by Bonnie Kim, the founder and director of Bare & Core Expression.

Alani Apio is a noted Hawaiian playwright, sculptor, and actor from the island of O'ahu. His plays Kamau and its sequel Kamau A'e tackle complex issues related to Hawaiian sovereignty and family relationships. Both plays were produced for the stage by the Kumu Kahua Theatre. He lives in Kailua on O`ahu and works as a community liaison for the Board of Water Supply and several private, local companies.  He's also on the board of Kanu Hawai`i, a non-profit group working to make Hawai`i the most economically resilient, environmentally sustainable and compassionate.

The performances are scheduled for August  14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 at 7:30pm at Ulua Theatre.  Advance ticket prices are $12 for general and $10 for students and seniors.  At the door, the ticket prices will be $15 for general and $10 for students and seniors.  Advance purchase tickets can be purchased at www.bareandcore.org, Basically Books, Keaau Natural Foods and Volcano Store.  Very limited seating is available at the theater.  The Ulua Theatre is located at 19-4325 Haunani Road in Volcano Village.  Due to strong language, the play is not appropriate for young children.

"THE KING AND I" OPENS AUGUST 1

August 1 (Friday) marks the opening of Waimea Community Theatre's production of Rodgers & Hammersteins classid, "THE KING AND I" at the Parker School Theatre in central Waimea.  Wildly popular since its very first performance, the musical is currently celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Broadway opening in 1958.  Inspired by the book, "Anna and the King of Siam" by Margaret Langdon, the play is based loosely on actual events of the 1860's, when Siam's monarch saw the wisdom of westernizing to a degree, in the interest of avoiding the aggressive colonization by European nations which was then proceeding at a rapid pace in Southeast Asia.

The talented lead performers of the play, Clem Lam as the King,  Kimberly Hawks as Anna, Maren Oom as Tuptim and Heidi Thomas as Lady Thiang are poised to deliver an delightful evening of song under the direction of Barbara Kopra, herself an accomplished musician and conductor of the Waimea Community Chorus.  A large supporting cast of adults and children will combine to bring the challenging production to life on the Parker stage.

The musical will run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from August 1 – 17, 2008.  Performances on Fridays and Saturdays begin at 7:30 pm; curtain time for  Sunday performances will be 3:00 pm.  Tickets are available at the Waimea General Store and from cast members at an advance purchase discount price of Adults - $13.00, Seniors/Students - $11.00, and Children - $8.00.  Tickets will also be available at the door for an additional $2 in each category.  More information is available by calling  885-5818 or 938-3062, or by visiting the Theatre's website at:  www.waimeacommunitytheatre.org   The production promises each audience member a mystical trip to the 19th century Kingdom of Siam, and an evening of enchantment with Anna and the King.

This is the last weekend to catch "HMS Pinafore" at Kilauea Military Camp Theatre. Tickets are going fast, so reservations are recommended.    Hope to see you there!

Kilauea Drama & Entertainment Network brings the lively tunes of Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore or the Lass Who Loved A Sailor to the KMC Theater this summer. Forty talented cast members are coming from all over East Hawaii to present an evening of musical fun.The company is directed by Suzi Bond aided by music director Pedro Ka'awaloa, Jr, choreographer Debbie Swartz, set designer Don Lawrence, costumer Margie Lee and conductor Armando Mendoza.
The plot revolves around a naval captain's daughter, Josephine, who is in love with a lower-class foremast hand (a common sailor, well below officer rank), Ralph, even though her father ,Capatain Corcoran,  intends her to marry Sir Joseph Porter K.C.B.the First Lord of the Admiralty, the cabinet minister in charge of the Royal Navy. As with most of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, a surprise twist changes everything dramatically near the end of the story. To find out how, you'll have to see the show!

Bare & Core Expression will present a special one day performance of
Super Secret Squad on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 2pm at Honoka'a
People's Theatre. Super Secret Squad is a local pidgin black
comedy written by a famous local playwright, Lee Cataluna. The
playwright, Lee Cataluna was born on Maui and raised in plantation
houses in Wailuku, Koloa and Ka'u. She graduated magna cum laude
from the University of the Pacific in Stockton California in 1988,
and in 1999, was named Distinguished Young Alumna. After working 10
years in local television and radio, she became a columnist for The
Honolulu Advertiser in 2000. She is a 2004 winner of the Cades Award
for Literature for her body of work, and served as the 2004-2005
Keables Chair at Iolani School. "Super Secret Squad" was
commissioned by Kumu Kahua Theatre in Honolulu and was first
produced there in 2002. The play lampoons bureaucracy set on Oahu
and reveals the "Wendell conspiracy." In the play 5 local college
students try to correct the wrong done by "Wendells" in very
comical ways. The play also deals with some serious issues of
domestic violence.

The play is directed by Bonnie Kim and was premiered on the Big
Island in March at East Hawaii Cultural Center. If you missed the
show in Hilo, don't miss this special performance at Honoka'a
