In my research I've learned that someone with the Hashimoto's antibodies probably needs thyroid replacement if the TSH is over 2.0. I have lab results from several thryroid tests over the last decade or so...and all were over 2.0. So..I've been feeling bad for over 10 years...and didn't have too.
Also, my white cell counts was ALWAYS high...and the docs would just give me antibiotics. Even
after telling my family history (mother had thyroid nodules and adrenal mass),I never had a doctor offer to do the antibodies test.
Anyway, after mentioned to my husband about how my body temperature had been low for years..he told me that just wasn't normal. So I did a bit of research which led me to finally going to a specialist (head/neck/ear) who FINALLY gave me the proper testing. He also tested for adrenal and sex hormones. All of those are low which I understand is not uncommon for low thyroid patients.
Anyway, after only 2 weeks on the Armour Thyroid, I can already tell a difference. Body aches and pains are disappearing, my "brain fog" is clearing, my skin is feeling better, I'm not so cold...and many other things.
Thank God i finally got help...and I look forward to being a member of the group here. Cindi

Cindi, Good news that you are on the road to better
things.
I had a similiar story - 10 years of feeling odd and
having all the symptoms before the doctors mentioned
the word Hashimoto.e. By that stage, I was so tired
all the time I used to crawl up the stairs to bed.
When I was finally diagnozed, I was told six months

unusual disease and has symptoms you find in other
health problems so it is hard to pinpoint it.
Here's to many more years of life for you Cindi.

shame we can't do without doctors--i only go when i can do it myself--
btw--HTLV I &II --is human t-cell lympthophic virus---they started stesting in 89 for this at the red cross--i got a letter saying that i'm not oto give blood any morre---didn't tell me that before--would be curious if anyone else had it-'they' tell me its not related to the aids virus--but who knows--i have only been with one partner for 32 years--and haven't had sex with any animals--the test for it wasn't conclusive--

Hi, Thanks for the email. First, the icky stuff JWe are a military family so we use the military med system which is basically Medicare in disguise (Tricare). After I posted yesterday I received a call back from my assigned doc’s nurse saying the doc was not comfortable with my White blood cell count and me saying I was not feeling sick at the time. Basically he didn’t take my eczema problem at the time as a reason for my wbc level. Anyway, I go back in one hour to see the doc again. This time I am going armed with my 7yr olds medical records. I am going to show him her labs so he sees what antibody test I am talking about. My cycle just started 9 days early without and of my usual pms and I am pretty regular, this is odd. Something is going on with me, just not sure if its thyroid related. I just don’t see how it skipped me.
Here are her results that I am also curious about if anyone knows.
Her TSH and FT4 are in normal range
Her thyroid peroxide TPO is>70.0
Interpretations, range, less than 2.0
Her thyroglobul ab (AMA) is >90.0
Interpretations, reference range, less than 2
Does anyone know how high that is? Does that range part mean what it should be at, less than 2 …OR is it less than 2 from being normal?
More later, little off right now, sleep deprived from this eczema (blisters!)that I have.

Don't know if you're in an HMO and the doc has incentives to do as little as possible. You may have to pay for a second opinion out of your own pocket,
but it would be worth it IMO.
Most of the time Hashimoto's patients have NORMAL T3 and T4(both thyroid hormone) levels. The problem is that their immune system's attacking the thyroid gland and *neutralizing* the T3 and T4 - so the body can't use it. To find Hashi's it's(in my totally non-medical, not giving medical advice opinion) necessary to get tested for the following:
TSH - Thyroid Stimulating Hormone: In
Hashi's patients it's often high - showing that your body is working overtime trying to make thyroid hormone.
T3 and T4 - to give a complete picture of what's going on...
And, of course, the thyroid antibodies. If they're higher than normal it can indicate Hashi's. They're called TPO(thyroid peroxidase) and Thyroid Antiglobulin, but other than that I don't know much about them.
Skin problems do occur with autoimmune diseases, including Hashi's. I have Hashimoto's, and
have always had problems with psoriasis and eczema. Leads me to think I started developing Hashi's around 9 years old.
Six months into being treated with Synthroid I developed severe skin allergies. It's gotten so bad that anything other than Neutrogena facial soap will burn, causing pinprick blisters which scab over.
Good luck for both of you, don't give up!

New here
hello Sharla-
since diagnosed with hashimotos-- the only
thing i've done about it was take synthroid..
i have exibited the typical symptoms--thinking
maybe it was mid- life crisis or puberty-
my mother and father died in
1988--same year--same cancer in same organ-(pancreas)-mom had
a goiter but they didn't worry about it--anyway--i'd like to know
about the immune system--like the connection in HTLV I and
II ---not III the virus that is connected to the aids
virus..if leukemia is related and the part the thyroid plays into all this..
anyway- hang in there--keep in touch

First my 7yr old during her school check up they
felt an enlarged goiter. They did labs and her levels were normal

month we will finally see a ped endro. I suspect she has
hashimotos, since my mother and grandmother also do.
Me, I feel like crap, seems I always have. I have

"normal." I ask to have my thyroid tested a lot because of family
history and how i feel. Not once have I been able to get them to
test my antibody levels. I thought this time they did because I
explained about my family and now my daughter...i dont see how it
skipped me.
I also developed eczema a few weeks ago, at 28
blisters all over my hands, and now my feet. My new psych said that is
related to auto immune and asked if I had my thyroid tested. Odd
that a psych could relate the two but not my DR.
Just a while ago they told me my t3 t4 were
normal, and my white blood cell was high. It never dawned on me until
then that it always comes back that way, my WBC is always a little
high? Could that be related to an autoimmune disease?
Does anyone know what the test is called for the
antibody? Also I have my daughters results and I am trying to figure
out how elevated it is.
Is it possible to feel like crap and have normal
t3 t4?
See with my mom it started with hashi, an later
turn to hypo.
OH, I also have an ultrasound next tuesday, doc
felt a nodule. I dont feel it and neither did the different doc i saw
monday. still going to get it done.
Thanks! Sharla

since diagnosed with hashimotos-- the only thing i've done about it was take synthroid..
i have exibited the typical symptoms--thinking maybe it was mid- life crisis or puberty-
my mother and father died in 1988--same year--same cancer in same organ-(pancreas)-mom had a goiter but they didn't worry about it--anyway--i'd like to know about the immune system--like the connection in HTLV I and II ---not III the virus that is connected to the aids virus..if leukemia is related and the part the thyroid plays into all this..
anyway- hang in there--keep in touch

Hi, I just joined this list. I have many questions!
Two issues here myself and my daughter.
First my 7yr old during her school check up they felt an enlarged goiter. They did labs and her levels were normal but her antibody level was elevated. In just a little more than a month we will finally see a ped endro. I suspect she has hashimotos, since my mother and grandmother also do.
Me, I feel like crap, seems I always have. I have a alot of the symptoms of TD but once again my levels come back "normal." I ask to have my thyroid tested a lot because of family history and how i feel. Not once have I been able to get them to test my antibody levels. I thought this time they did because I explained about my family and now my daughter...i dont see how it skipped me.
I also developed eczema a few weeks ago, at 28 blisters
all over my hands, and now my feet. My new psych said that is related to auto immune and asked if I had my thyroid tested. Odd that a psych could relate the two but not my DR.
Just a while ago they told me my t3 t4 were normal, and my white blood cell was high. It never dawned on me until then that it always comes back that way, my WBC is always a little high? Could that be related to an autoimmune disease?
Does anyone know what the test is called for the antibody? Also I have my daughters results and I am trying to figure out how elevated it is.
Is it possible to feel like crap and have normal t3 t4?
See with my mom it started with hashi, an later turn to hypo.
OH, I also have an ultrasound next tuesday, doc felt a nodule. I dont feel it and neither did the different doc i saw monday. still going to get it done.
Thanks! Sharla

Well he has been diagnosed with hashimotos and has a goiter and gets his blood checked regularly, but I'm not sure what this is that your asking me. I don't know what that is. Is this something thatcommonly occurs with hashimotos?

I've work in mental healt as a counselor many years--up unto recently i have had the patience of a saint--take nothing personally--been called everything imaginable--
i give hashimotos the credit for making me less sensitive--more irritable--and irratating.i told my dr that i felt like a woman--that is--trouble making decisions--moody----
sweats
not any thing wrong in being a woman mind you but--i could see a definite change in my out- look and demeanor--i suppose thats a sigh of 'H'--
Does your husband give blood--and has he been checked for HTLV -I and HTLV-II ?
auto-immune stuff may be related and i'm curious about myself--too--
my husband also has an inward goiter. His doctor found it while doing a routine physical on him before scout camp one summer.
he also takes synthroid. Its strange you mention cold, my husband always was sensitive to cold when he was younger. now it seems that he sweats alot at night in bed. Do you have that also?
I read in a book once too that people with this disorder sometimes suffer with grouchyness. I wonder about that too, his grouchyness has seemed to increase now that hes older and that he is having to take synthroid. I wonder if anyone else knows anything about this aspect of it. a lady that used to live next door to us had this disorder and her and her husband ended up divorcing because of her change in attitude.

Hi All,
I was diagnosed with Hashi's about 2 years ago and have been treated
with Levothyroid ever since. My doctor just increased my dose and for
the first time in ages I feel like I have some energy. It'll be
interesting to see how long it lasts! :)
Anyway, I just wanted to say hi.
STRICTLY PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL
Dear ,
Request For Business Partnership.
With great pleasure, I write to solicit for your
assistance in a matter that can be of mutual benefit to us. I only pray
that you read through carefully and respond as promptly as possible.
Precisely, on the 25th of May 2000, the Ministry of Minerals and Energy in
South Africa where I work as a Director of Auditing & Project
Implementation, received Presidential irrevocable circular Order requesting
the Ministry to compile and forward the list of all past Foreign
Contractors, whose contract payments are pending
since the period of the immediate past regime of Dr. Nelson Mandela and the
present regime. The purpose of this exercise was for the present South
African elected government to pay foreign contractors all debts owed, so as
to maintain good relationship with other foreign Governments and
non-Governmental financial agencies.
In light of the above, my colleagues and I, duly
assigned with the duty to compile this list of the
past contractors, decided to include a non-existing Company name with a
bill of US$29.6, with other Company names and their respective bills for
payment approvals. Our intended plan is to create the impression that
(Guilder Mining SA Pty) which is the non-existing Company also carried out
contractual works of supply to the Ministry as well as others.
With the cooperation of Top Government officials in the Ministry and two
senior colleagues of mine in the Ministry, I was therefore assigned to
contact a trusted and reliable foreign based businessman, furnish him with
the appropriate documents, in laying claim to this $29.6Million being
payment for contract work. Payment shall then be transferred upon approval
to a safe account as would be provided by you. In other words, if you
accept to be our partner then you
shall be considered, given the pertinent
documentations to have been awarded a contract already been executed by you
for which your Company shall be paid the sum of US$29.6Million.
Please be informed that with the South African
Government monetary policy, Government officials /
employees are not allowed to operate or own bank
accounts abroad hence our decision to seek a foreign partner.
I also have the authority of my colleagues involved to negotiate your share
and benefit of the US$29.6M after a successful transfer into your account.
For further information, please contact us via the email
address:deszul_1@...
Thanks for your anticipated cooperation.
Regards,
Engr. Paola D.Mbezula.

Hi,I am Jennifer,30 yo.I was diagnosed with this in 1996 when my
youngest was about 5 mos old.I thought I was still feeling crappy
from having a baby but then the goiter appeared.
I had been doing really good until a couple of months ago.
In Dec I had surgery to reverse the tubal ligation I had in '95 after
my 4th was born.I quit smoking and coffee at the same time.Everything
was still good.
Mar 8 was my last period. That's not good when you are TTC!Well,I had
started feeling REALLY CRAPPY so I thought it was time to have my
thyroid checked.I quit going to the endo because it is soo far away
and the dr's here can test my thyroid levels.I may have to start
going back!Anyway,I went to the hospital to get a copy of my
results. The dr nly did the T4 and TSH.He wouldn't do anything else
(this was the first time I had ever seen this dr)...My T4 was
7.1,reference range was 4.5-12.5
My TSH was 10.26...reference range was 0.40-5.50.
I raed that in order to get and stay pregnant, the TSH level needs to
be 2.0 or under.
I want to try either Unithroid or Armour. This dr didn't seem very
enthused about Armour AT ALL!He said why take it if it isn't going to
work. That irritated me somewhat. How does he know which medication is
going to help any certain individual?!
Getting pregnant is being put on a back burner for now...I just want
to feel good again. These past few weeks I have felt like I was losing
my mind! The forgetfulness and just foggy brain! My kids and dh don't
understnad that it is because of this thyroid and I think they get
fristrated with me at times.I can't blame them...I get frustrated at
myself! And the irratibility....whewwww!They are ready to run me
off..LOL...
Have a great day,
Jennifer
For those of you that still feel bad even though your TSH is 'normal'
ask your doctor to do the TRH test. This test was the mainstay before
the TSH test. The TRH stimulates the pituitary and can show pituitary
malfunction. Check out the web - some interesting articles are
written.
Hi,
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 1992. I too still felt bad. What
you need to do is do some reasearch on the t3/t4 combination treatment
and make an appointment with an endocrinologist to discuss potential
benefits. Not all endo's are on board with this treatment, but you
can call around. If you are haveing other symtoms, you need to write
them down and when they appeared and discuss them with the endo -
examples are migraine headaches, diabetes, irregular sleep, irregular
menstral cycles (for women), lactation, weird hair growth, the list
goes on. TSH is released by the pituitary which controls your thyroid.
It is important to note any other symptoms to make sure that other
hormones are properly regulated. Your tiredness may or may not be
related to your thyroid and can be caused by other things.
Good luck!
Kristy

I was diagnosed with this syndrome three years ago. At the time, I
was extremely close to lapsing into a coma because my levels were so
messed up. Since then I have been taking Synthroid to control these
levels. However, I always feel bad. Is there anything that will
help?
Hi I was diagnosed with Hashimotos a couple years ago. I also have
Fibromyalgia and Raynauds so it has been hard to know why anything is
happening in my body. I have questions and would love to talk to
anyone that understands.
Hello you three lonely souls.
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's almost a year ago. Tomorrow, my
mother is having surgery to remove a large goiter....so it runs in
the family.
I have the usual symptoms these days - years ago I suffered horrible
depression and was actually hospitalized twice. I recently learned
that an underfunctioning thyroid can contribute to depression.
However, today, I feel much better, mentally. I realize that my
absent-mindedness, lack of focus, and sore aching muscles are
symptoms of an organic disease - not moral weakness or laziness. I
have decided not to be hard on myself and to baby me when I need it
or kick myself in the pants when I need it!
Yes, I am tired and spend most of the day needing a nap, no, I don't
get a lot done, but - compared to other diseases I guess I can cope
with this. Of course, I am lucky in that I am a stay-at-home mom.
My youngest is 11 - so I can nap if I need too. I really feel for
those of you who can't. I was working 50 hours a week when I was
going through those dark, depressed years. My doc feels I was
probably HYPERthyroid at that time and my poor little gland burned
itself out !!
Anyway, while I understand this disease is rare - it is the most
common cause of hypothyroidism....there are a lot of us out there...
TO THE FOUNDER: So sorry about your boys....in 1977 I had a full-
term baby boy with anecephaly occipital encephelitis (sp?) which
means the bone at the back of his skull never formed and his brain
was exposed and had extruded through the opening. I believe this
defect is related to Spina Bifida.....anyway, the autopsy showed that
his thyroid was malformed.......could my thyroid condition have
contributed to this, I wonder? I am not blaming myself. I took good
care of the both of us, and no one, not even my obgyn, suspected
anything was wrong until time to give birth...
Good luck to you all.....it will get better.
shelia
Marnie,
Unfortunately you are the only member to date other than myself. I
personally do not have "Hashimoto's syndrome." I am just the support
eGroups founder.
I have been working at creating a site that would make it possible for
anyone with any rare disease to find others to make friends, share
information and provide support with. There are currently over 700 support
eGroups in my community. You can visit my web page by going to the
following address:
http://www.rarediseases.cc
I hope that others with "Hashimoto's syndrome" will soon find this place and
begin sharing with you. I am working to promote the "Rare Disease
Community" the best that I can when I am able. It takes up alot of my time.
My wife and I have two sons both born with a rare genetic disorder known to
affect only 110 boys world wide. It is a disorder that only affects boys.
Both sons are mentally and physically challenged as well as being nonverbal.
Anyway, I hope others will soon find you.
