Ah, I always get the complicated chapters! Well, here goes:
Chapter 5: " The Fallen Warrior"
(or, After The Fall...)
1. At the Tonkses:
--The chapter starts right after the fall from the motorbike; Harry is
afraid Hagrid is dead
--Harry meets Tonks' parents (who call her "Dora"); first, Ted Tonks,
who heals Harry's wounds & tells him Hagrid is okay (and looks &
sounds like a quite ordinary bloke)
--Harry tells Ted about the Death Eater attach and that they knew of
the Order's plans; Ted reassures him that they have protective charms
about the place; Harry "...imagined Voldemort, a hundred yards above
them as they spoke, looking for a way to penetrate what Harry
visualized as a great transparent bubble."
--Harry is reunited with Hagrid
--Harry meets Tonks' mother, Andromeda, who initially startles him
with her physical resemblance to Bellatrix
--The Tonkses are alarmed that their daughter is still missing; Harry
feels guilty (the first of many times throughout this chapter)
--Harry tells Hagrid of Hedwig's death, and through doing so, finally
expresses his grief over it -- "The owl had been his companion, his
one great link with the magical world whenever he had been forced to
return to the Dursleys." Hagrid tells him that "she had a great old
life."
*Summary: Hagrid is not dead; Hedwig is; they meet Tonks' parents
2. At the Burrow:
--Harry & Hagrid are met by Molly & Ginny; they are the first pair to
arrive
--Harry repeats his story about the DE ambush, that "they knew it was
tonight;" Harry again experiences guilt over Molly's worry for her family
--Ginny tells Harry that Ron & Tonks' portkey returned without them,
as well as Arthur & Fred's (Harry & Hagrid's was number 3, then)
--Lupin arrives with George, who is wounded; Lupin immediately grabs
Harry & forcefully verifies his identity (" 'So why aren' you checkin'
me?' panted Hagrid." -- turns out polyjuice won't work on a half-giant0
--Harry says Voldemort recognized him only after he tried to disarm
(instead of killing) Stan Shunpike, who looked Imperiused (the DEs
apparently consider Expelliarmus to be Harry's 'signature spell,')
Lupin: "Harry, the time for Disarming is past!"
Harry: "I won't blast people out of my way just because they're
there...that's Voldemort's job."
--George's ear has been cursed off with Dark Magic & can't be grown
back, but he will be okay; we learn that Snape was the one who did it,
with Sectumsempra (his own "signature spell")
--Hermione arrives with Kingsley, who is also initially suspicious of
Harry's identity; they discuss the fact that Voldemort can fly, and
that there must have been a mass breakout from Azkaban.
--Mr. Weasley arrives with Fred, demanding to see George, who revives
at that point--all hover around the maimed twin anxiously in silence
to see his reaction, and his first words are---a joke!! George is
bloodied, but unbroken.
--Harry is now enveloped with fear & worry for Ron & the rest; then
Ron & Tonks arrive (Tonks & Remus embrace; Ron & Hermione quarrel);
Tonks was attacked by Bellatrix, who apparently has a grudge against her.
--Bill & Fleur arrive unharmed; Bill reports that Moody was dead:
Voldemort attached him first, Mundungus panicked & fled, & Voldemort
cursed Moody
--All grieve for Moody (even the twins stop grinning), and they drink
to his memory ("The firewhiskey seared Harry's throat. It seemed to
burn feeling back into him, dispelling the numbness and sense of
unreality, firing him with something that was like courage.")
--Everyone speculates on who betrayed them: they rule out Dung, since
the DE's didn't know the whole plan (about the seven Harrys)--"Dung
panicked, it's as simple as that. He didn't want to come in the first
place, but Mad-Eye made him..." Voldemort had expected Harry to be
with the most skilled Auror, but Dung's cowardice gave him away.
--Everyone now begins to look furtively at Hagrid (known for his loose
lips); Harry tells them: "We've got to trust each other. I trust all
of you..." Harry is then reminded of how Mad-Eye criticized
Dumbledore's willingness to trust people; Lupin says Harry is like
James in trusting his friends, & Harry knows he's thinking of how
Peter betrayed him, and Harry feels "irrationally angry."
--At some point, Kingsley leaves to return to the Muggle Prime Minister
--Harry's scar hurts; it "...had not hurt like this for more than a
year." [Note: the last time was during the events of Book 5]
--They prepare to go to recover Moody's body; Harry wants to go with
them, feeling guilty over Moody's death and reluctant to put more
people in danger for his sake; everyone protests that they just risked
everything to get Harry there safely.
--Harry feels pressured & frustrated, like they are "all imagining him
to have power to match Voldemort's." Harry leaves the house, sees the
thestral outside, and thinks of Dumbledore and how he would have known
why his wand acted like it did, "...because Dumbledore always had the
answers." He thinks of everyone who has died--Dumbledore, Moody,
Sirius, his parents, his "poor owl."
--Suddenly Harry's scar hurts and he hears Voldemort's voice in his
head, and sees him tormenting Ollivander, who is apparently his
prisoner; Ollivander had told Voldemort "the problem would be solved
by using another's wand," but Voldemort says Lucius' wand has been
destroyed.
--Ron & Hermione come out to get Harry and he tells them what has just
happened; Hermione is very upset and reminds him that Dumbledore told
him to close his mind--"Harry, he's taking over the Ministry and the
newspapers and half the Wizarding world! Don't let him inside your
head too!"
--Harry now relates how his wand "acted of its own accord" in his
battle with Voldemort.
**Summary:
>Arrivals (in this order): (0) Molly & Ginny (already there); then:
(1) Hagrid & Harry, (2) Lupin & George, (3) Kingsley & Hermione, (4)
Arthur & Fred, (5) Tonks & Ron, and (6) Bill & Fleur; pair (7) never
arrives: Moody (dead) & Dung (fled)
>The Order was betrayed (the DEs knew about the date & time of Harry's
departure, but not about the seven Harrys)
>Harry's wand acted against Voldemort of its own accord
>Harry's mind has become once again connected to Voldemort's
Chapter summary:
There is a general atmosphere of fear, worry, and suspicion in
this chapter. Harry reacts with trust and is compared to Dumbledore
and to James (with the implication being, 'Look where their trust got
them!!'). Harry feels increasingly guilty over being the cause of
other people's worry, danger, injury, and death; he also feels angry
and frustrated and unequal to everyone's expectations of him.
Casualties:
*Hedwig is dead
*George's ear was cursed off by Snape
*Moody is dead because Mundungus panicked
New information learned:
*Voldemort can fly!
*Someone betrayed their plan to the Death Eaters (but not all of it)
*Harry's wand acted on its own accord against Voldemort
*Harry is hearing/seeing Voldemort inside his head again!!
Key points:
* Is Hagrid dead?
* Someone betrayed them!
*Where are all the others?
*Moody is dead; George is injured
*The evidence in the story so far seems to confirm Snape as evil
*Why did Harry's wand behave the way it did?
*Why is Voldemort suddenly inside Harry's head again?
=========================================
Some of my reactions/thoughts during this chapter--
--Snape: During the first Chapter when Snape & the other DE have
contradicting information, I thought to myself, if Snape's information
turns out to be correct, it will prove he's on Voldemort's side.
Everything in this chapter seems to reinforce that Snape is evil and a
traitor--he has betrayed their plan, he is unmasked as a Death Eater
and curses & maims George (things are looking bad for Severus Snape)
--Hedwig: This chapter answers the previous discussion on why
Hedwig's death is treated so casually--Harry is too preoccupied with
Voldemort and later, his fear for Hagrid to deal with it, but in this
chapter we see him able to experience his feelings for his lost
friend. As Harry's link with the magical world when he is forced to
live with the Dursleys, Hedwig's role is now over, for Harry has come
of age and into his true heritage, and he will never have to live in
the alien world of the Dursleys again.
--Stan Shunpike: This is the first of many incidents in DH, in which
something that was previously presented as being false and foolish to
believe turns out to be true after all ("Just because you're paranoid
doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!". In this case, Harry was
upset that Stan was arrested for possibly being a Death Eater, but now
we see him with the DEs. However, the description of him indicates he
has been Imperiused and possibly acting against his will (he may have
been kidnapped during the Azkaban breakout). This is also one of a
number of instances where JK graphically shows us what the world under
Voldemort looks like--in this case, one of many people forced to
commit acts against their free will.
(We have also now seen Voldemort casually kill Charity Burbage and
feed her to his snake just for writing an article he didn't like.
Later in DH we see the Ministry and Hogwarts under Voldemort rule,
Muggle-borns on the run, parents forced to commit dishonorable acts to
save their children, and all the other things that up until now we
have only heard stories about from Voldemort's previous rise to power.
I think this is important for Harry's growth, to give him the resolve
to sacrifice himself when the time comes--it's one thing to just hear
about how bad things will be under Voldemort, but by the end of the
book, Harry has clearly seen what Voldemort's world is like and by
then is prepared to do whatever it takes to defeat him.)
Read, discuss, talk among yourselves!
