I find it quite tough to think of possible scenarios in which Harry defeats Voldemort with love, though I believe you'll both be proved right in thinking that's how he does it.
Can we gather together some ideas on this list, exploring what love is, what Harry knows about this power and how to handle it, Voldemort's relation to this power, and how it can be wielded as a weapon? Then we can maybe put them all together and use them to brainstorm some possible outcomes for this last battle. And are
there any other things that might come into play during Harry's showdown with Voldemort, that we should also think about? Come out and play, everybody, this should be fun!
Hans:
What is Love? A tough question!
I think the first thing to say about it is that it's a force, not an emotion! We can feel an emotion when we give and receive it, but essentially it's a force. It is at once more wonderful and more terrible than death, than human
intelligence, than the forces of nature.
To help us understand it we should go back right to the beginning of Creation. As I see it with my extremely limited understanding, Tao, the ultimate creator, is transcendent. That means that in the final analysis It is beyond and above creation; outside of it. It is said that Tao made Creation to express Itself. It started off by creating a universal, omnipresent, omnipotent, Spirit. In this Spirit Tao poured Itself and so in that sense It is also immanent; i.e. part of Creation. The Spirit is the perfect vehicle of Tao. It is totally and absolutely unchangable. Ten trillion years ago it was exactly the same as it is now.
This Original Spirit of Tao consists of seven rays. These seven rays are the absolute foundation of Creation. Together they have created anything that's ever been created or ever will be. They are absolutely complete and perfect and anything they create will be eternally perfect and in accordance with a Plan that the Holy Sevenspirit has laid at the foundation of everything.
The seven rays can be given human names, but of course we live in a universe that's not in accordance with the original Plan of the Sevenspirit and so any conception we have of them will be extremely limited and faulty. But here they are:
Life
Love
Intelligence
Harmony
Wisdom
Devotion
Activity
So these are the seven Forces that existed before the Universe was created. As I understand it, the first thing that the Original Spirit created was the great Sea of universal space filled with atoms of various kinds. These atoms are usually referred to as cosmic root-substance. In symbolic terms this universal sea of atoms is called the Mother, and the Spirit is called the Father. At a certain point the Spirit flashed through space and created the human life wave. It consisted mainly, I think, of impregnating certain atoms with a mental Plan for the eternal and perfect development of God's Children. You know that everything human beings make begins with a plan. It's the same with natural life: the human body begins as a single cell with a "recipe" we call genes. The genes
determine everything about the physical body, be it plant or animal. This includes the life span, the size, the composition, everything.
Hence when the Original Spirit created the Plan for the development of His children He in effect created their entire future; their complete development. And of course their life span was to have no end.
Obviously when the Act of Creation occurred, the Spirit poured Himself into the Plan which he attached to each and every atom. Personally (and I may be way out here) I visualise the act of creation as a bolt of lightning flashing through space, leaving behind a vast trail of sparks. Each of these sparks was an atom, or seed, or zygote if you like, impregnated with this eternal Plan. It's important to realise that the seven rays listed above put themselves into every single living atom. Look again at the list above, and imagine that together these seven rays are responsible for the
whole of creation, but that they also put themselves totally IN their creation. When these seven rays are in a person and he cooperates with them, anything he does will be eternal and divine - that is, Holy, that is, faultless.
Love is one of the seven rays of the Original Spirit and so obviously this same force is a constituent part of the original human being.
A very important thing to know and remember is that each of the seven rays also contains the other six rays within it. And so Love is part of Life, part of Intelligence, part of Harmony, Devotion, Wisdom and Activity, while each of these in turn are also contained within the ray of Love. In other words one of these rays never acts without the presence of the other six.
How can we understand love? I think first and foremost we should see it as the Divine Force which gives itself without wanting anything in return. Tao, God, gives
everything to His Creatures but wants nothing in return. I see the sun as a good symbol for God. All year long the sun gives us light and warmth and other energies which enable us to live, but we can never give the sun anything back. Tao Itself is outside of creation and hence we cannot give It anything. How can you give part of creation to something that hasn't been created?
Nevertheless I should add here that when a creature of Tao is filled with the second ray, he wants to express this Love: firstly to the Father Who created him and gave him the ability to love. The true Child of God therefore loves God above all with a passion, a heart-burst, an utterly extreme longing to give himself to God, so totally, completely and perfectly, that Man and God become as One. And secondly to Creation itself, of course, as that is the visible aspect of God. Each and every one of these Children of Tao radiates the second ray in a strength according to his
stage of development. As all of Divine Creation is filled with Life, this means that all these Children of God are filled with a intense and supreme Love for every creature and every creation. There is no separateness in Heaven: there is no "i" and "you". There is only a total support and cooperation between all creatures working for the development and fulfilment of the Plan which lies at the basis of everything. The reward for every creature for carrying out the Divine Plan is Love: being able to give ever more Love, which is an Ecstasy and bliss we cannot imagine.
Of course this Divine Love is all embracing and can never shut anyone out. There is no prejudice in Heaven, no preference, no 'more for some and less for others'. The children of God radiate their Love impersonally and universally. Always. Without end.
As most of you will agree, a group of the Original Children of Tao decided to try out their free will, and
so they followed a plan of their own making. This is usually called "The Fall", because gradually the Sevenspirit withdrew from their microcosms, resulting in a "fall" of the vibration of the energy which maintained them. Part of the "Mother" (see above) also "fell" in order to remain a life-support system for the descending microcosms. In other words, both the children of God and their Mother descended into a universe of time and space, gradually, over millions of years, thus losing contact with the Father to an ever greater degree.
Just as an aside I want to relate this to Hagrid. When the Mother separated from the Father, this is symbolically referred to as the Mother becoming a widow. Any human being who is working for the liberation of humanity is called a "son of the widow" in the symbolism of the Brotherhood, and, as we know, Hagrid was the son of a widow for many years, confirming my assertion that Hagrid is a Bodhisattva.
Here we are today in the universe of time and space. I have often written about the horrendous suffering in this world, so I won't do it again now. Suffice to say that the Sevenspirit is not present in this world and His Plan is not being carried out here. Nevertheless the wonderful and hope giving thing is that we still carry in us that now dormant original Spark of the Sevenspirit, and the eternal perfect Plan connected to it. These are symbolised by Harry and Sirius respectively. Harry Potter is a veiled but nevertheless very powerful description of how we can make a new start and bring the original Child of God back to life, according to the Perfect Plan that was implanted like an immortal gene.
It is theoretically always possible for a human being of flesh and blood to hear the call for liberation from the original spark of Eternal Life that is the centre of the microcosm and is connected to the physical
heart. When a person reacts to this call and is willing to give up his life in the fallen universe for the Life in the True Fatherland, the spark in the heart lights up and a tiny little flame erupts. Simultaneously a new star appears in the shell of the microcosm - Sirius, the bright morning star, announces the birth of him who shall be anointed, him who is prophesied one day to defeat the Dark Lord who is the result of the Fall. This is the primordial legend of the baby who is born in a stable, or lives in a cupboard under the stairs, but grows up to defeat death and sin (i.e. deviation from the Plan).
As soon as this baby is born, the seven qualities of the seven rays begin to reactivate in the life of the seeker who has Harry living in his heart. We should not imagine that in the beginning the Holy Sevenspirit takes over. No, we all know Harry is far from perfect, and makes many mistakes. Nevertheless Love begins to play an immediate role in
Harry's life. It protects him from the Dark Lord a number of times, as we know. Lily symbolises the Divine Spark, and her love protects Harry. In Part 5 Harry's Love for his Inner Christ drives the Dark Lord out of Harry.
If we read the septology carefully we can see a wonderful and inspiring development in Harry. He seems to overcome his defects one by one. This is in accordance with the development of a seeker who wants to turn his leaden personality into a Golden, eternal one. Harry's wonderful qualities have often been discussed. I think most of these are aspects of love. For example his "people saving thing" is really just an aspect of Love, isn't it? When love encounters danger for others it wants to save them; it wants to lift them out of the darkness into the Light, because its essence is Light.
Another quality is his loyalty to Dumbledore. We know this saved his life in Part 2 and if I say
"Dumbledore's Man" I've said enough. Dumbledore personifies the force that comes from God to bring the Divine Child back to life, and so we can understand how obvious it is that the alchemist is totally loyal to the force that is grasping his hand and trying to lift him up into Nirvana.
The type of Love I'm talking about is described beautifully in the New Testament, the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians Chapter 13.
What exactly is Love? Essentially it's a Divine Force that radiates from the heart. It lives in every human being on earth, and it's a need that even the worst criminal feels. Every human being has this in common: he has the need to give and receive love, and to belong to others, i.e. be part of a group, no matter how small. This is because "The Room of Love" is in everyone's heart. However this room is locked in most people, and so the force it emits is twisted, impure and impotent.
People react to it in irresponsible ways and although it is the core essence of the Divine Universe it is the driving force behind human behaviour on earth. Perhaps some of you are shocked to read that a Divine Force can cause human misbehaviour on earth, but if you think about it, you can lead nearly all actions to the need for the human being to give and receive love. Those of you who watch teenagers carrying on in peer groups can see that everything they do is to earn the admiration and respect of their peers. They want to belong, to be admired as "cool", to be accepted and - let's speak plain words - to be loved by their peers. This feeling is described beautifully in in Part 5 when Harry is sitting on the train with stinksap on his face, accompanied by Neville and Luna, and Cho pops in. The thoughts that go through him are a treasure in its ability to describe how teenagers feel in those circumstances. And, let's face it, how we all feel.
To cut a
long story short, the Room of Love is in every heart, but when the New Soul, the Flame from the original Spark of the Spirit, begins to live again, it is linked to the Room of Love. Remember that this Room is the essence of the Sevenspirit, i.e. Tao's very being. It is God in us.
As the new soul in the alchemist grows in strength, the link with the Force from the Room in Love increases, as we can see in Harry.
In the practice of life the alchemist gradually begins to learn to use this Force. He learns gradually to fill every room he enters with Love. He surrounds everyone he meets, friend or enemy, with Love. His Love radiates through people's astral and etheric bodies, setting them aglow, as it were. He learns to bathe friend and enemy alike in this golden Force that radiates from him. This force is so powerful that it has the ability to dissolve hatred and animosity. I want to refer you now to post 189.
Please read this before you go on. This is a recount written by an alchemist-Bodhisattva, and what he achieved during his life is the proof that what he said is true. This event shows what the invincible power of Love is. It also proves that it is possible to love our enemies. This is not an act of incredible will power and strength of mind, but a natural ability as a result of having Divine Love burning in your heart.
A person who is clairvoyant and able to see in the astral plane would see a brilliant light issuing from the person who is radiating Love, and he could see it wrapping itself around a person full of hatred, or being possessed by an evil force. He would see it dissolve the black carapace of evil and enter into the person's heart. Or he would see the light burning the possessing force and making it leave the person it used to possess, something like Harry's love for Sirius driving Voldemort out.
Ron
symbolises the earthly personality, while Harry symbolises the incipient Child of God who is growing inside the structure of the old human being. It is Harry that performs all the acts of Love; Ron just needs to follow Harry, be loyal to him, and sacrifice himself for him as he did in the chess game. And so if any of you think this is all a bit airy fairy and pie in the sky, think again. If we surrender our personality totally to the New Soul that can be born from the Lily in our heart, we too can learn to love our enemies. It just comes naturally when the Room of Love in the heart begins to open. It's a cinch!
How will Harry defeat Voldemort? I can't tell you how this will happen in the narrative of Harry Potter, but I can tell you how the Flame kindled by the original Divine Spark conquers the Inner Force of Darkness, which has ruled the microcosm for millions of years.
The Divine Flame just grows and
grows, while the Dark Lord diminishes more and more. As you know, the microcosm is a sphere, a large sphere whose radius stretches several meters beyond the physical body. Imagine a tiny light in the centre of the sphere. This light gradually increases in brightness, and so it drives the darkness further and further towards the periphery of the sphere. There comes a time when the darkness is packed up against the periphery. The light is surrounded by a thin layer of intense darkness, so to speak, with the exception of the bright star Sirius which shines on the alchemist as a loving Star of Hope and Fulfilment.
There comes a time when the new Soul Fire reaches maturity. It has conquered the autonomic nervous system and it rules the blood and the hormones. Its golden light fills the etheric and astral bodies and the will is attuned to be loyal to Dumbledore. The New Flame now burns in both the heart and the head. Only two things remain to
be conquered within the body: the old serpent-fire, burning in the spinal cord (Draco) and its companion: the old I-consciousness behind the forehead (the scar).
Six of the horcruxes have been destroyed; only one remains. And so comes the final showdown. The New Testament describes this as three temptations in the desert. The desert symbolises this world, which, to the alchemist, has become barren and lifeless. Jesus, another personification of the new Flame, withstood the three temptations without any trouble. Matthew says, Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him. Gautama the Buddha had a similar experience with Mara, his bitter enemy. What actually happens here is that the dense layer of darkness packed around the periphery is suddenly penetrated by the light of the New Flame. A cloudy sky quickly becomes clear as the clouds dissolve. The 12 bright lights burning in the sixth ring of the
microcosm suddenly make their reappearance through the dissolving clouds. These are the angels which minister to Jesus! This is the crown of 12 stars which is promised to all of you if you commence the journey to defeat your own Dark Lord.
I realise that narratively speaking this doesn't sound very exciting. A bit of an anticlimax to some of you perhaps. I'm sure Jo will make it sound extremely exciting though. There's other levels of the story that need to resonate powerfully as well. There's the hero's journey aspect, and of course Harry also symbolises the alchemist who has to put into practice the Love that lives in his heart. And so this is where we come back to the original question: "how will Harry defeat Voldemort?"
As a human being about to make the Philosopher's Stone, Harry has to obey the voice of God speaking in his heart. The whole cause of the Fall was man doing his own thing. To reverse that,
the alchemist has to surrender his will to God in totally voluntary obedience. That means living according to the types of suggestions given in the New Testament as Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. Do not resist one who is evil. Harry has to learn not to resist Voldemort. This means not entering into conflict, not reacting to it, not obeying the challenge to take an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. If Harry were to reciprocate evil with evil he would not be liberated, but dancing to Voldemort's tune. As I've said in my essay, Love does not enter into conflict but withdraws from the place of battle, filling the vacated space with Love. In that Love evil destroys itself. If you press me for narrative details I'd have to say I see Harry opening the Room of Love. This will give Harry such mind blasting power that he will be able to have compassion for Voldemort, who I guess will be there with Peter Pettigrew. I imagine Voldemort making a sudden attack on Harry, and then
entering the majestic cloak of Love that Harry has put on by then. I guess Peter will come into this, as we have yet to see how his life-debt will force him to pay Harry back. Your guess is as good as mine, but perhaps he will end up causing Voldemort's death, or at least being part of a chain of causes.
I do think Iris is right in saying we have already been given clues in the last trial in Part 1, with the Mirror of Erised. The whole septology is a mirror isn't it?
I also agree with the members who said Love is a shield. I have told you how Love can even drive possessing entities out of a person. (Notice how the Gestapo chappie looked how he'd been grabbed by the neck - that's the medulla oblongata!) All these things will probably come into the story. I do hope with this background information some of you will come up with possible scenarios. (hint hint)
I must add three notes as
further information. The first is that it may be hard to understand how God's Children living in Tao can always radiate love. Don't they get tired, or frustrated, or irritated if things don't succeed?
The answer is that the Divine Man has no self interest whatsoever. He has absolutely no unmet needs. He does not need food: God supplies all his energy. He knows no tiredness: his vehicles never become depleted or worn. Nothing ever goes wrong with the Divine Plan. Its success is guaranteed. And those who have stayed behind as gate-keepers know that evil will be overcome; it's just a question of time.
And so having no self interest because all his needs are catered for by Tao, he spends no time and energy on himself at all. He works only for the fulfilment of God's Plan, or for the redemption of fallen humanity. Hence the Bodhisattva is totally selfless. With a few minor exceptions Harry already shows a radiant
selflessness.
The second point is that when the New Consciousness is born; when the Enlightenment has come, and Pymander is speaking; when Mercury is bringing messages from Olympus, the alchemist begins his transfiguration from an earthly mortal to a Divine Immortal Child of God. The first thing that happens after that is what we call the Venus Initiation. This happens before anything else, before the Mars Initiation bestowing a new Will on the alchemist, and before all other developments. This tells us that after Knowledge comes Love. After the loss of the I-consciousness Love comes to guide the newly initiated Bodhisattva in all his actions. That's probably a clue to Part 7.
The last point is that we have a few teachers amongst us. There is a wonderful man in this world who has understood the power of love and how this can be brought into the schoolroom. He is William Glasser, and has written a book called
Reality Therapy. And if any of you have children, I recommend you read his Identity Society. This has nothing to do with liberation, but everything to do with bringing love into the classroom and the home. Glasser has also written a ten step plan for teachers to instill self-discipline in students through love. Wonderful!
May you all find Love,
Hans
