Harriman Hikers is a Hiking Club for singles of all ages who meet every Sunday at 11:30 am in the South Parking Lots, Field B-1, of the Ramapo College of New Jersey on Route 202 in Mahwah, NJ. Founded in 1974, the Harriman Hikers is one of the oldest singles groups in the state of New Jersey.
Hikes are intermediate and although no equipment or experience is needed hikers should be in good physical shape and capable of hiking 7-8 miles in hilly and rocky country where some hills can be steep. On the average Sunday some 30 hikers join the hike; the ratio between men and women is usually 50:50 except that more men hike in inclement weather. Ages range from the 20s to retirement. There is always a mix of newcomers and regular hikers.
We hike throughout the year and in all kinds of weather. Most of the hikes take place in Harriman Park, NY, but we also hike in state parks of northern New Jersey. In good hiking weather we typically hike to mountaintops to enjoy the many spectacular vistas in the region such as the Hudson and the many lakes, forests and valleys. In the heat of the summer the destination is always a lake and in freezing weather it is one of the many shelters with fireplaces where we stop to eat and keep warm by a roaring fire. Hike destinations are chosen based on weather conditions and the availability of parking.
Who Can Join?
Any single, divorced or separated person of any age is welcome, as are couples who come together. There is no club to join; you only need to show up and sign in. The fee is $6. Hikers form car pools and drive to the trail head. You should bring something to eat and plenty to drink in your backpack or fannypack. Because of the terrain hiking boots are recommended.
