When small slivers of these clouds form their characteristic spotted
patterns in pale-blue skies, many are inspired to think autumn has indeed
arrived. Their shape suggests wavelets or the pattern of scales on a fish,
especially a mackerel. When such clouds appear it is the season for large
catches of sardines, hence the name "sardine clouds". Technically, such
clouds are usually cirro-cumulus, but similar patterns may be seen among
alto-cumulus clouds, and the distinction is not firm.
