I'm going to try Roy and Joe's recommendations and replace the wire with stronger stuff. It's not the fulcrum, and it's not the voltage ;) Thanks, guys!

Are you using the throw wire that came with the motors? If you are, that's likely your problem. It's too small and flexible, even for N scale. Roy ...
