I use Byer's of Maine micro-rope.  The adjustable rope goes around
the tree and a small silver bar slips into the loop of the hammock.

I tried putting 2" strap around the tree first, but it always slipped.

I've been using the standard Hennessey set up, but unlike most Hennessey
users, I don't set it up tight.  I hang it as though it were a
no-ridge-line hammock with lots of flop and sag.  I'm guessing the angle
is 40 or more degrees hanging down from horizontal.  I use the Hennessey
tree-huggers (1" wide) wrapped once around the tree (most of the trees
have dbh >30 cm.  I weigh about 200 lbs.

If you saw my earlier email, then you know I'm following the 'long-term'
effects of a one-night hang on /Cryptomeria japonica/.  It's long-term
in that I want to know how long it will take before I cannot tell that I
hung the hammock there.

Nightwalker, I find it interesting that your HH UL Backpacker is made
in the USA.  I purchased mine (current model HHULB) about June this
year and
it says 'Made in China'.  How old is yours? Admittedly I did buy mine
through an eabay store, but nevertheless it has all the registered
trade marks attached to it.  It also came with printed material with
the Hennessy contact information on it. I must say, I was surprised to
see the 'Made in China' tag on it as I too, was of the understanding
that it was made in the USA.

I ordered it special with the heavier ropes for a 200+ pound person. They
told me that it was made in the US before I bought it. My other HH, an Exped
Asym, is made in China and says so on the bag.

BTW, they didn't charge me more for the heavier-roped version, and it only
added 3 ounces to the whole thing. So, those of you who want to carry
ultralight, but aren't very light yourselves, you might keep this in mind!

I don't see how we can expect someone from another country to make their
products in our country. But I guess that's just me.

enclose  the ends of the hammock. I don't think it was zipped closed, possible
velcroed  or just wrapped past each other and staked. The question is, where can
they be  gotten or the pattern be seen so I can try to sew my own? I have one of
Ed's  hammocks for "Lurch" sized people. (6'3",  270  #)

week.  We are now making the WinterTarp & have a few in stock.  The price is
$119 for the tarp itself & $17 for the accessory kit that includes a
silnylon stuff sack & 10 NoTangle GuideLines.



The WinterTarp is 10'x11', catenary cut, silnylon, w/ 8 tie outs plus the
two ridgeline ties.  Two 'door' panels on each end can be left open or
closed as much as needed to block wind or rain.  While it was only 37F last
night, it was very windy & I was glad I had the WinterTarp.



Dave Womble designed this tarp, so he can speak about all of the individual
features better than I can.  Dave has been out on a hike lately, but
hopefully he will post today & give more details

Okay Ed, here is little blurb I put together on the new tarp.

The WinterTarp is the results of several generations of a class of
tarps that I call hammock tarptents.  It is an 11 foot long by 10 foot
wide silnylon tarp with catenary curves along each of its ten edges
and four catenary darts.  The basic concept is to provide a taut tarp
when pitched high for rain protection and a taut tarp when pitched low
for better wind protection as a hammock tarptent.   Of course there
are other basic requirements as well such as simplicity and
functionality.  In cold weather, simplicity and functionality are
paramount as even the simplest of chores can become difficult when you
are tired or cold and your equipment needs to do what you expect it to
do without a lot of adjustments or readjustments.  One other feature
is that it has a steep pitch when used as a hammock tarptent to
encourage any snow to slide off the tarp rather than accumulate and
cause problems with stretching and sagging.

When pitched high for rain protection in a traditional A-frame
configuration the WinterTarp has a surprisingly taut pitch for such a
large silnylon tarp due to the innovative use of catenary darts at
strategic points on the tarp and the catenary curves along its edges.
  It has two ridgeline tie outs and four tie outs on each side for a
total of ten tie outs.  The center pair of tie outs on each side are
for the main body of the tarp and the corner tie outs can be pitched a
number of different ways.  The corner tie outs can be pitched to
extend the tarp as a normal flat tarp or they can be angled inward.
The unique catenary darts allow for a taut pitch over a significant
range of angles for the corner tie outs.

When pitched low and the end flaps closed off, or partially closed
off, it becomes a tarptent for a hammock.  Most of the time you will
only want it partially closed off as that is the best compromise for
most winter conditions when camping with a hammock. With the ends
partially close off there is more inside volume, it is easier to exit
and enter, and the wind can't hit you unless it blows through the tree
you are tied off to.  This is great improvement over tarps that don't
offer this type of coverage in cool weather where exposure to wind can
be a problem.  The approach on the WinterTarp tent is to use
overlapping flaps for doors to close or partially close off the ends
and to not have the tarp all the way to the ground, but very near the
ground.  This blocks the wind from having a direct path to the hammock
as long as you pitch your hammock up off the ground and up inside the
tarp, and still provides adequate ventilation for when the wind isn't
blowing.  Remember that conditions often change during the course of
the night where the wind sometimes is blowing and sometimes it isn't.
  When the wind is blowing ventilation isn't an issue but when it isn't
blowing it is an issue and it can become a big issue real fast in
winter conditions.

Of course each person is free to experiment and find their own
favorite WinterTarp configuration for the conditions they encounter.
I think people will appreciate the simplicity and functionality of the
WinterTarp.

I noticed in a tarp you made you had sewn two ties out in the field on  each
side in addition to the tie outs around the edges. They looked  like they made
more interior room by pulling the inside center of the tarp out  away from
the hammock. Did you not include them in the winter tarp?

OK, the updated Speer Hammocks web site is now up & running!  Long
overdue, but it's finally done!  I'm not much of a website designer,
so I'd appreciate hearing from anyone noticing problems with the

Those were in an earlier version of a winter tarp I made, this one

That looks good doesn't it?  At one time a couple of years ago Ed
Speer and I talked about offering that version for sale but we were
not quite satisfied with it and never did offer that version for sale.
  Problem is it doesn't work quite as well in winter conditions as it
looks like it would.

I learned a lot from that version of winter tarp.  I learned I wanted
something simpler and I learned that what I wanted in a winter hammock
tarp was a little different than that.  I learned I wanted something
that used fewer stakes and still gave me a taut pitch in the various
configurations I needed for winter use. I learned that you want to
block the wind from directly hitting you but still have ventilation
when the wind subsides without having to get up and re-stake anything.
  I learned I didn't want to deal with hook and loop fasteners for
fastening a door when I wanted to enter or exit the tarp as they are
difficult to get hold of and align properly from inside the tarptent.
  I learned I wanted steep sides to shed snow.

I went back to the proverbial drawing board and on my third version
for a simplified version came up with what Speer Hammocks now offers.
    There are no hook and loop fasteners, I use an overlapping door
approach that pitches taut and doesn't drag along the ground.  It
provides for reasonable wind protection and adequate ventilation at
the same time.  The side pullouts for increasing the interior volume
you mentioned are gone, those are missed in a closed off tarptent
pitch but they added too much complexity, messed with the geometry
with the overlapping door technique, and flattened out the top of the
tarp making snow loads more of a problem... I don't think the maximum
closed off tarptent pitch will be used except in really bad conditions
and then you will have to hunker down and make due with a more
confined space than you might prefer.  The catenary ridgeline is also
gone, I increased the depth of the catenary curves on the edges and
utilized four catenary darts along the hammock where the "door flaps"
hinge.  Those do some interesting things for the tarp... they keep it
very taut over a variety of pitch options and do it exceptionally well
while allowing you to have steep sides when using the tarptent pitch
to help with snow buildup.

Dave, when I talked to Ed the other day he said he had already sent
you the WinterTarp.  I wanted him to send you some shock cord to use
with the side tieouts but I was too late getting to him.  The shock
cords are something Ed is planning on offering( for a small price of
course <grin>) once we get it documented how to attach them .  I use
1/8" shock cord because that is what I have picked up locally, I think
Ed uses 3/32" shock cord.  Either will work fine, one has a little
more tension and the other weighs a little less.  I have used shock
cords on the side tieouts for my hammock tarps for years and really
like them.  Basically I use 12" pieces of shockcord and loop it
through the side tieouts after I have tied the guyline on.  That gives
me a doubled over piece of shockcord that is six inches long.  For the
amount of stretch I get with the shockcord I use, I attach that with a
clove hitch in the guyline about 10 to 12 inches down, leaving 1/2 to
1 inch tails on the ends of the shockcord.  These shockcords make life
a lot easier with the WinterTarp as it keeps tension on it when the
silnylon stretches, keeping it reasonably taut and it gives you a
convenient spot to hook your stakes when pitching it in the tarptent
configuration.  Do you have some shockcord and understand what I am
trying to describe?
