I also have a HH and have found it to be dry during major storms. I would
suggest getting the larger rain fly. This rain fly is nice to throw up when
you get caught in a major storm while on the trail. There is an acquired
manual dexterity needed to get out of the HH. Gary

scrool down to the second post for a pic of a sure fire bike lock...

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=295834

not really hammocking relavent but with all the talk of tree damage by
hammockers I thought this might be interesting. apears a tree can
overcome quite a bit of stess. I can relate as my dad had an old hay
rake that had a tree grow through the steel rims. and the past few
days he has been cleaning of an old fence row and has had to cut the
web wire off a lot of trees. Now off to help him and burn a stump of my
own.

I've put up a few pictures of Lake Lucerne. There's not a hammock on
anyone of them, so I put them in the photo section of BackpackingTalk.

I hope the link works for everyone.

i didn't see anything about this on the speer hammock site so i was
wondering about washing the older version (sewn through construction)
top blanket.
i washed it w/ woolite, gentle cycle, but after running it through
the dryer on low heat w/ a couple other things, it's still a little
heavy w/ moister & the down is still clumping.
i took it out & fluffed it around in my hands (trying not to be to
rough though) & put it back in the dryer on medium heat.
i'll keep an eye on it... don't want it to get hotter than needed.
BTW ed... i'm loving the pea pod & top blanket! i've been using them
at home... especially the top blanket. just right! thanks. ..tim

Glad you like the PeaPod & Top Blanket Tim. You're doing fine with the
drying-it just takes a long time to get all of the moisture out. That down
should be very fluffy when you're done. See ya next weekend end at

a "clean" tennis shoe??? what's that???<g>
OK, i've herd that (& done that) many times in the past. but in recent times
i herd somewhere not to put stuff like that in the dryer because it's hard on
the baffles & seams.
but both here & on the jacks r better website, it's still recommended, so i
guess who ever said not to put stuff in the dryer to help break up the clumps
was just being overly cautious.
i've never seen evidence of a problem w/ the seems. thanks. ...tim

yep, i ran it through 2 cycles in the dryer & it seemed that it was dry (or
very close to dry), but when i put it on me in the hammock i could feel a slight
dampness.
but i decided to let my body heat dry it through the night.
i've shone the pea pod & top blanket to several people that came over to the
house. it's a truly versatile system. looking forward to trail days. ..tim

"Instructions for washing a down bag..
First buy a 12 pack, you're going to need it.
1. FILL your bath tub with water and down soap, warm water please. Drink
a beer.
2. Take your bag stuffed in it's small stuff sack submerge the whole
thing and unstuff it under water. Allow it to (gasp) soak up the
water/soap. Let it sit. Work it around etc for like 15 min. Drink a beer.
3. Drain the water from the tube refill with clean warm water and make
sure that you work the clean water into the bag to get all the soap out
of the feathers. Drain again, and drink another beer
4. Repeat step three, drinka' beer
5. Repeat step three, drinka' nother
6. "MUSH" all the water out of the bag and let it sit in the tub for a
while to drain as much excess as you can. This a two beer time period,
watch TV do something.
7. Call a buddy, have him/her come over (they are going to drive you to
the laundry mat, you're drunk). Give them a beer and have another your
self. You have 3 beers left and $20 for a huge front loading dryer, and
a two pack of tennis balls
8. Take the bag, balls, and beer to the laundry mat. Throw the bag and
balls into the FRONT loading dryer and turn the heat as low as possible.
Sit and watch it spin and drink the remainder of your 12 pack, this is
at least a 3 beer time period, if not more. Occasionally check to make
sure that the down "clumps" are breakin' up and drying up good. Now the
bag is clean and hopefully dry, let it air dry over night and you should
be good to go in the morning. Well at least the bag will, you'll have a
hang over "

Accurate instructions with a little humor.

I have finally gotten the chance to spend a weekend hanging. I spent a
long time reading and researching prior to taking the plunge. I am
really surprised it has taken me this long. Well it was a great
weekend, the weather dropped to the mid-high 30's and I was still
toasty warm. I am going again this weekend.

One question for the group, what do you do with your shoes to keep
them accessible, dry, and not so the creepy-crawlies can get in them?

Tie them together and hang them from the ridgeline or at the foot end
of the hammock. With an HH I usually hang them from the inside
ridgeline either with one of the hooks supplied with the hammock or an
extra biner i have with. With my Speer hammock I just drape them tied
together over the foot end of the hammock.

a lot of people tie them to the hammock support rope or webbing, but if it
rains they will get wet unless you cover them w/ a trash bag or some thing.
some of us just have them setting on the ground, under the edge of the
hammock... right were my feet go when i get up.
if you're concerned about bugs & stuff getting into them, just turn each one
upside down & give it a few good wacks.
some people put them in their backpack beneath the hammock on the ground...
maybe w/ a pack cover or trash bag over the pack if the rain is blowing.

I turn mine over in the morning and shake them hard. Sometimes I hang them
on a tree with my pack and cover them both with a big plastic bag.

I had a bag hanging by a webbing strap from ridge line of my Hennessey
Backpacking Ultralight. The bag was outside the hammock. A huge
cricket (>1 inch long) somehow managed to join me inside the hammock.
Imagine how much fun it is to catch a cricket when you and it are
confined inside a hammock! I assume the cricket worked it's way inside
through the gap made by the webbing of the bag. The rest of the velcro
closure was closed. I don't think I had bits of sleeping bag poking
through the closure.

On the other hand, camping in central Alabama last summer, the place was
literally crawling with ants. Huge 1/2 inch columns going up the north
side of every tree. They started using tarp guylines and soon I had
huge columns on my hammock. The velcro worked to keep them out. I
would have noticed if they got in, because these ants bit.

Anyone else had critters breaking and entering?

sounds like you may want to treat your hammock w/ permethrin.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Permethrin might not be necessary. So
far, not hanging webbing through the Hennessey exit has worked to keep
out crickets and ants. Hanging anything through might not keep out
ants, but probably would keep out crickets. It makes me wonder how the
Adventure Racer would work--no velcro. In other words, my point is that
the velcro is important whether you're occupying the hammock or not.
Some folks have pointed out the velcro mainly functions to keep things
out when you're not in.

1. Buy or make an equipment hammock for your shoes and things. 2. If not, put
your shoes inside a large ziplock bag, stuffsack, or any large plastic bag and
hang it on your hammock suspension with a cord.
