My work email rejects emails from
yahoo groups and I otherwise don't get back to the site often enough,
but I do check my feedreader often so this would really help me keep up...

Not answering your question but maybe an alternative suggestion.
All my yahoo groups stuff are sent to my gmail account where they are
sorted. Then while at work if I have a moment I pop into Gmail to see what
happening and my official work account remains uncluttered.

Hit me off list if you would like a Gmail invite.

Jeff,

That's what I've done for six nights out in January and February and it worked
great. One thing you have to watch for is how long the space blanket lasts for.
I noticed silver flecks in my hammock after the second night and when I held the
blanket up and looked through it there was noticeable wear, (lines and creases
where the silver had come off) After that the blanket didn't work nearly as
well until I switched it out with a new one. I've spent one night on my back
porch with the temp. down to - 16 degrees Fahrenheit with the wind chill and I
was O.K. I woke up cool after 3 hours but with another layer I would of been
fine. Again this was with a new space blanket under my inflatable pad and a
zero degree bag. From my experience the space blanket makes a big difference.

Enjoy,

Ian

how about putting the space blanket under your sleeping bag/pad?
Does that keep you a lot warmer from underneath?

I've had pretty good luck with space blankets to beef up my insulation. I
put a 5' CCP in the hammock with me, with a space blanket in between the
hammock and underquilt. I can tell a big difference, but whether it's from
radiant or convective heat loss I don't know.

The space blankets do need an air space to work, any part you weren't actually
touching would work but not areas making contact...I didn't know how crumbly
they are, light enough to carry 2+ but no fun making a lot of trash in the
woods. If using as a vapor barrier it'd be inside insulation, but it would be a
crumbly vapor barrier and anyway needs the air space to function best.

Next time I try it the blanket will be fixed to the underside of my over-tarp.
IR reflectors are certainly very effective with a campfire, even using
dull-finished logs and rocks.

I am hooked on audiobooks, either from the library or from my
Audible.com account. From the library, I rip the CD's to MP3, from
Audible, they are ready for an MP3 player. I use a 1G Creative Labs
flash-based MP3 player and earbuds. Weighs less than a book even with
multiple spare batteries.

Taking a glove off to hit the button once or twice is not a hassle.

i don't know if this has been mentioned on this thread about reading in the
cold, but a hammock sock that's just big enough to put over the ridge line or
clip to the ridge line, will give you a wind free enclosed area that would
probably be 10-15° warmer than outside.
and did i mention wind free? ...tim

I have another link for you for solar powered chargers. The sight is really

This link leads to cell phone chargers but you can find battery chargers here

Hey, thanks for all the great ides on reading lights. I like the idea of
MP3s and audio books best (small and light!) but I'll probably be fashioning
contraptions out of coat hangers and clips, too. If there are any
successful prototypes I'll let you know.

My wife ordered me a set of silk/wool under-gloves from WINTER SILKS.
They weigh about an ounce, for the pair. For those who'd like to read
while hammocked in the winter, I'd use these, plus a chemical hot-pack
inserted under each palm. I have no connection with this company. Just
my opinion.

I'm working on making as eco-friendly camping supplies as possible and am
currently working with used coffee grounds and beeswax to make a fire
starter/heat source for a small army surplus metal stove. I'm trying to get
something that will boil tea while I'm using my other stove to cook dinner. Of
course once I opened up the package of beeswax it smelt like honey and started
me wondering... Would burning beeswax or beeswax candle attract bears?? Does
anyone have any insight into this one? I'ld like to hear it before the
spring...

Enjoy,

I'm working on making as eco-friendly camping supplies as possible and am
currently working with used coffee grounds and beeswax to make a fire
starter/heat source for a small army surplus metal stove. I'm trying to get
something that will boil tea while I'm using my other stove to cook dinner. Of
course once I opened up the package of beeswax it smelt like honey and started
me wondering... Would burning beeswax or beeswax candle attract bears?? Does
anyone have any insight into this one? I'ld like to hear it before the spring...

Enjoy,

Ian

If you can smell it, so can a bear, and from a lot further away. :]

It's my understanding that beeswax candles do attrack bears. I've
heard of hunters using them as a lure. Seems kinda risky to me. By
the way,why coffee grounds?

Best,
Eric

Perhaps only marginally related, waterproof/breathable garments used to be made
by soaking cotton material in beeswax, then boiling in water for a while to
remove enough of the wax to make the fabric breathe some...

Do any bears besides Winnie eat honey? I watch hunting on TV a lot and bears
are usually baited with beaver or other carcasses in some state of
putrefaction. They are opportunists to the max, and eat whatever is EASILY
available. I don't think honey is the easiest thing to get in the mind of a
bear. What's more, the mixture could be stored hanging away from the
campsite. Bears aren't going to be attracted to it while it's burning.
