I just built one that requires no more than 500Mw in and is held down to
150 Watts out. If you are able to build a lucrative source for a
Transistor final is an old ship to shore radio. They have pretty stout
output circuits....

Well, there's a good deal of confusion on my part as to whether
it's legal to operate or even import an HL-50B. The FCC(Federal
Communications Commission)added regulations quite some time ago to
try to keep the 11m crowd from running kilowatt linears from 5w inputs
(11m'ers are limited to 5w in USA). As a result, it's basically
impossible to find an HF amp that only requires 5w input. Even kits
are generally verboten.

But legal on 6m.....not that there's much packet activity (in Uberwald and
the rest of Europe).
There is a lot of experimentation going on with 1k2 packet on 10m over
here - but these guys (in theory!) keep their deviation down to fit in with
the IARU bandwidth recommendations. But if it gives us a decent FT-817 type
input/output, who I am I to complain.
BTW, I can tell you that Ham Radio Deluxe will feel VERY familiar to FT-817
Commander users: it'll just have some extra features that aren't possible
with the FT-817 version.

While going thru the PDF version of the 703's manual(URL is in one
of Simon's messages on the FT817-Commnander group), I noticed that
the section on Packet(pg 70 in the PDF version) said you can also
setup the rig for 1200bps Packet. Again, not very useful(read legal)
for HF. Maybe they assume packeteers will use a transverter with the
703 to run packet on VHF or above.
Interesting rig, though. I don't have one, but am looking around for
one with a few more watts out than my FT-817, for emergency
communications. Am also looking at the Ten-Tec Argo V (516). Both
have 10w out. 516's not nearly as sophisticated computer control-
wise, but looks loke a decent rig. I _do_ intend to keep my 817
though, and love Commander and PSK31 De-Luxe. Too bad it's so hard
to find a good amp w/proper output filtering that will run w/5w in.

Hi Wayne and others,

Take a look at Ekki's CI-V site:
http://www.plicht.de/ekki/civ/
and especially:
http://www.plicht.de/ekki/civ/civ-p52.html
and you'll see that most of the work has already been done.

Oh, but thath what being an Igor ith all about!

Thanks for your response, Peter. I have written some primitive code
in Visual Basic to control the IC-781. Changing a table of control
codes should not be a problem. Thanks to both Simon and you for all
of your work.
I will patiently wait for the program. I hope you both enjoy your
new rigs.

Hi all,
In Simon's (holiday - has that man no conscience?) absence I'll answer
this....
Wayne wondered:
> I am wishing that Radio-Deluxe will eventually be usable on other
> ICOM rigs. I have an IC-781 and have been using PSK31 Deluxe with it
> since I first discovered FT-817 Commander and PSK31 Deluxe.
Your wish is our command! Put simply, if it works with the '703 it will work
with any Icom rig that has a CAT interface. Having said that, not all Icom
rigs use the same commands for a particular function.....and some rigs have
a very limited command set. This will mean than you may have to dig out your
rig's manual and edit some files: but that is all in the future. For the
moment we have to learn to drive these 703s and work out exactly how they
are put together. But it's possible to use CAT commands for EVERYTHING, and
it is all excellently documented in the manual. For example, the IF shift
can be adjust from the computer: add that to FT-817 Commander's centring
tool and you have a very powerful weapon against QRM. Add a narrow CW filter
and you need fear NOTHING :-)

Yes, it's not shabby, is it?

Simon,
I am wishing that Radio-Deluxe will eventually be usable on other
ICOM rigs. I have an IC-781 and have been using PSK31 Deluxe with it
since I first discovered FT-817 Commander and PSK31 Deluxe.
I thought you said that "we might have to write some of our own
interface code" which I assumed might mean CAT specific commands for
our particular rig.
I am really overwhelmed with the enhancements you have made to FT-817
Commander and PSK-31 Deluxe. Thanks for all of you work!
Wayne, AA5JC
Hi all,
Thanks to Chris Taylor at Martin Lynch my IC-703 arrived on time today.
First (very subjective) impressions are:
Marginally heavier and larger than my FT-817/Z11 combination.
Sturdy build quality...built for a hard life.
Lively receiver: a little noisier than my K2, but not unacceptably so.
The optional 500Hz CW filter is great. It is markedly steeper than the
FT-817's 500Hz filter. I am beginning to think that the 250Hz filter might
have been a good option (don't forget that the CW filter can be used for RX
in digital modes too)
Recovered audio is fine. The DSP filter works as well as my W9GR DSP III in
NR and autonotch modes.
The "downside":
Why the **** Icom decided to equip this rig for 9k6 packet I do not know!
You can't use it on HF, and it certainly doesn't fit the IARU bandwidth
recommendations on 50MHz. But the DATA socket is 100% FT-817 compatible -
that's a plus :-)
The autotuner is "only" a line flattener. It would have cost nothing more to
make it a true wide-band matcher. It's no big deal as it seems to have a
pretty wide range, but random wires are out. I guess the rig is not meant to
be "portable" but more "person transportable".
I am still learning to use this thing: it's very similar to the old MkI 706
I used to have but there are some subtle differences.
When I have this all sorted out I'll try using some CAT software to play
with it while we all wait for Simon to get back from holidays. This is going
to be FUN!

Hi all,
Sorry about this, but I can't seem to sort out this poll problem.
I'll ask someone who has experinece with this sort of thing, but
basically this group seems to have been set up with polls "only for
moderators", and a quick RTFM doesn't turm up the relevant info.
Of course, it could be that I am having an attack of the Igors...

Hi all,
I have set up a poll to get things started to see how many of this
group's members already know about FT 817 Commander and/or PSK31
Deluxe. Your answers would be very much appreciated. The poll closes
on 28 May.

Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the
ham-radio-deluxe group:
How many members of this group are
already acquainted with FT-817
Commander and/or PSK31 Deluxe
o I use FT817 Commander and PSK31 DEluxe
o I use FT 817 Commander but not PSK31 Deluxe
o I use the stand-alone version of PSK31 Deluxe
o I know about them but use neither
o What are these programs?
To vote, please visit the following web page:

Note: Please do not reply to this message. Poll votes are
not collected via email. To vote, you must go to the Yahoo! Groups

Hmmm....might as well throw this in the group: are you going to have sliders
or round knobs for things like volume and IF shift? Maybe sliders are easier
to implement and take up less screen space?

Hi,
I have just been playing with the settings, group should be OK now.
Peter and I have ordered 703's, I will start at the end of May 2003
and will have Technology Previews by mid-July 2003.
It will be similar to the FT-817 Commander.

Hi all,
You can find a very comprehensive list of interfaces for Icom radios
at:
http://www.plicht.de/ekki/civ/civ-p2.html
and most are cheap and easy to build. Having said that, I think that
we should all use something that works at real RS323 levels...
