Advocacy for Haitian Nationals currently living in the United States under the U.S Constitution and International Law. Scope include but not limited to the defense of Human Rights and Civil Rights of Haitians in the United States and some Caribbean Islands through direct action and national education campaign on issues impacting their wellbeing. The Haitian-Advocacy forum is a partner organization of the Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition (HAGC), an umbrella group made of non-governmental and private sector organizations established in the State of Florida and New York, the two states with the highest number of Haitian Nationals.
The Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition has played key role to ensure passage of the Haitian Refugee Immigrant Fairness Act of 1998, (HRIFA), a landmark legislation providing residency to 50,000 Haitian Refugees who fled their homeland in the 1990's due to political turmoil. The Coalition has been actively involved with the Census 2000 initiative, a national campaign to get minorities and communities of interest to get counted in the U.S Census 2000. As a result, Florida is identified as the state with the largest population of Haitians and West-Indians.
The Coalition has engaged the Miami-Dade County government and the State of Florida to get Haitian-americans to be equal partner in the political process as far as self-representation on the issue of redistricting.
HAGC is a dynamic social movement that supports empowerment of Haitian Nationals through self-governance, participatory democracy, and works in partnerships with all groups that respect and treat Haitian expatriates as equal. HAGC is a civil society that is part of the Organization of American States (OAS) registry since 2006.
HAGC on-going issues are: Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Haitian Nationals, litigation in U.S Northern District Court of Florida regarding the Florida no-match no-vote, a law that impacts haitians/latinos.
