This week on 'Contact,' a look at probably every First Nations person's
favorite legal and bureaucratic category - Indian Status.

Contrary to popular belief, not all "Indians" have Indian Status. Since it
was created in 1850, this non-Indian invention has bedevilled those forced
to live by its rules and restrictions. But ask your average Canadian, and
they'll probably tell you Indian Status is a ticket to paradise: free dental
care and eyeglasses, free university, free housing: in short, a free ride
for Indians -- and free of tax, to boot.

This Friday, we attempt to skewer these persistent myths to reveal the
not-so-shimmery realities behind what many call the "legal fiction" of
