Thanks everyone for the great info! ...has anyone specifically run at Reveille? I'd like to know about the topo and trail conditions (single track, jeep roads, technical, etc.). I know it's a 9+ mile loop, but not much more. I've seen photos and read descriptions of Bandera, but just have no knowledge on this one. Thanks again!!

The hardest part re: the Captn Karl's for me the past 2 years was getting my nutrition right when you're starting a long race at 7pm.  I think the problem was I didn't eat enough for dinner, and in some cases didn't take enough salt b/c I didn't need as much in my training runs.  You really have to take alot of it for those -- I eventually found taking 1 s cap every half hour was usually sufficient (which I wasn't always needing to take in training).  So I'd recommend eating a normal routine, or maybe even a little bit bigger lunch, and then eat a nice mini-meal a couple hours before (which I neglected to do most of the time) that is enough to tide you over until the start at 7pm.  The first half I usually suffered, then once my nutrition stabilized and the sun went down, I felt much better and wasn't so bad; sometimes it was just a matter of pressing on until it got better when I could dial everything in to "normal".  The 60k's on those trails are no joke in the summer heat.

And I'd 2nd carrying spare batteries... there are times I thought I was hallucinating with the shadows at 3 or 4 in the morning with a dim light.... but it will also give you a bit more motivation to make it to your drop bag when your headlamp is running out in the darkness.  Good luck!

Miles,

I finally read your race report!!! (I know, pigs must be flying) That course looks fantastic..great pictures. (I've destroyed every camera I've ever taken to a race) Pretty much everything you said, I could've said about Massanutten and unfortunately, with us both coming up on another 29th birthday, heh heh, well, find some hills, Miles!!!! I did find a couple of hilly spots locally which prepared me somewhat for some of Cactus Rose last year, but having to get even more creative with a grandbaby in tow..always something..

Haven't you been to Miwok before? Did you finish? Are there pre req's to get in?

Tremendous work! The course looks like a beast. Not only the climbing, but that fact that all the aid stations appear to be around 8 miles apart. Definitely old school. Can't wait to hear more.

Lynnor,
Yeah, I ran Miwok in 2007 (I think). While the new course runs on a lot of the same trails, there's some different stuff and it's definitely a slower course. I did finish in like 16 hours that time. Long day. No prerequisites for getting in, but there's a lottery. If you're interested, I highly recommend it. Just beautiful.
You need to get that kid into a baby jogger ASAP!

Tuesdays and Thursdays just happen to be my normal run days so that works
perfect!

As for pace, I have been running for years on the Memorial ring but just now
getting into to trail running so I suspect my pace is somewhat
...medium??....lol....

This week is out but Tuesday the 12th at 7am? Just let me know where to meet.

Great report!! Question: did the altitude affect you at all? Coming from flat Texas I always worry whether I could do a run at altitude with no time to acclimate. A few years back I was doing simple 3-mile runs at Park City UT (about 7800 - 8000') and it was killin' me!

Sure, I feel it, but when you are at that elevation or higher there's a lot of
hiking involved up the mountains which allows for walking and catching your
breath.
It takes me a few miles to get acclimated, but I usually try not to think about
it and just move along how I feel.
As long as I stay hydrated I can fight off effects of altitude sickness
(headaches, pounding heart, etc), plus my system handles elevation pretty well.
I'm lucky!
