Saturday Oct 4th Huntsville State Park Run

Huntsville State Park (HSP)
TIME: Start at 7:15.
DIRECTIONS: Take 45 north to the HSP exit # 109. If you get to the
Sam Houston statue, you've gone too far. Take this exit and go left
at the end of the exit ramp, drive over 45, and continue into the
park after making your water/Gatorade drop. Note that HSP charges
entrance fees, and I think it's ~$3/pp, so please bring cash.
CAR POOLING: For those interested in car pooling, let's meet at the
tennis center at Memorial Park at 5:45 Sat AM for a 6:00 prompt
departure.
MORE INFORMATION: Contact Michelle
(
michelle.wolpert@...)

15.5 Mile Loop: Below is a link to the RR 15.5 mile loop. Note that
you will have to drop water/Gatorade at what is marked as "Aid 1" as
you drive into the park. As you drive toward the park entrance,
about a ¼ mile on the left is a gate at the end of a jeep road right
before a parking lot. Drop your water/Gatorade here, and then
continue on to the lodge/lake, where we'll start. Aid 1 is about 4
miles into the run. The next water stop is at mile 12 (Aid 3, a
water spigot), so you'll have to leave enough water/Gatorade to last
you 8 miles.

ALTERNATE ROUTES:
  • At Aid 3, you can either continue along the trail for 15.5 miles, or jog through the campground/parking lot back to the lodge for ~13.5 miles.
  • Start/Finish at the Interpretative Center and instead of going to Aid #1 you can continue on to Aid #3. Total ~8 miles.

HCM Trail Walk

Walk will start at 7:30AM from the FOOTBRIDGE by the Rugby Field.
The walk will be lead by Angie
angelaveneziale@...
Please contact Angie to let her know you will be there.
Please bring a water bottle and replenish electrolytes.
NOTE: This is a 16-18 min/mile pace walk.

I’m definitely following the chocolate therapy advice—probably more than I should.  I’m being really good and I’m not running at all this week. I plan to give it a slow try on Saturday.

Hopefully I can join the group again soon—I hate my coaching gig. I like the people but it is such a time drain.  I learned my lesson a few years ago but then was convinced (too easily) to return.  I should have thought about it first. Oh well.

I plan to come out in a few weeks…need to hit the trails to ‘train’ for February’s Rocky Raccoon.

Sounds fun Michelle but I'm a bit beat up from the 8 hour Run from the
Ducks Saturday so I think I'll take it easy for a week. I'll catch you on
the next one.

WHAT / WHERE: We'll be running in Huntsville State Park. There are
numerous trails up there, so pick your poison. However, to keep
things easy, let's focus on two options: the Rocky Raccoon 15.5 mile
loop, or the RR 13.5 mile loop (which is the same as RR 15.5, but
less 2 miles after Aid 3).

RR 15.5 Miles: Below is a link to the RR 15.5 mile loop. Note that

Yeh I should have gotten the Dead Duck Award. After I finished (41.8 miles)
I started cramping up really bad. I could not move hardly without a painful
cramp. Did you notice that there was no water over in the pavillion after
we finished? They brought it later but a little too late for me. Anyway I
was really dehydrated. It was just too hot for me to run that long. I was
not getting any better. I was feeling dizzy and could not walk or hardly
sit up so they called the ambulance and I went to Mineral Wells Hospital
ER. They did some lovely torture to me on the way there. After a couple IV
bags I was good to go so they let Penny take me home. Unfortunately that
was not until 8pm after all the tests they do were finished. We did not get
back to Houston until 2am.

What was really great was the RD Tony came to the ER and went through the
whole awards ceremony with me because I missed it. He spent over an hour
with me in the ER. I really appreciated that!. What a wonderful man he is!

I enjoyed meeting you again and your lovely wife too! I really enjoyed the
race just not what happened after. I think we both ran a super race
considering the 90 degree heat and no shade to speak of.

What is your next race?

Lynnor remember when we did our 30 miler at HSP last month how hot it was

Paige,

I've attached some good hip stretches.  Some of them require a band or 5-6' section of rope, but they're all excellent stretches from the Wharton Stretch Book.  It's important to note that in the Wharton method, you only hold the stretch a couple of seconds.  Also, in the initial part of each stretch, let your hands or the bands guide the stretch but let the contracting muscle do most of the initial work, with the hand / band / rope providing the leverage for the maximum 2-3 second stretch at the end of each repetition.  Each of these stretches helped me get through my last bout of IT issues and are good general preventative stretches as well.

Good luck.

This is the most recent information I received from the Parks Superintendent:

'He said that as the section on of the park is closed where that trail connects, this trail won't be worked on for a while. He made mention of needing to get some "foot traffic only signs" made up prior to reopening it.'

So the news is good - the trails will be 'official' to foot traffic and they are planning to work on them as time allows.

Bob...

Glad to hear you are not a dead duck!  I have run in hot races before, but that one was the worst.  After about 5 hours I could not get anything into my system...I was running on the edge of nausea.  I never hurled, but I am sure I was running out of energy.  I believe it reached the 80's by midway and the last hour was in the low 90's.  It took me about 1/2 hour after finishing to get my eyes back in focus...I was seeing double for awhile...kinda cool, though, looked like twice as many people at the awards ceremony.

That Tony is quite a guy...funny that he was the guy at Bandera back in January running around in the dark picking up the course markers.  I'm surprised I didn't see him since I did not finish until 3am.

Congratulations on your 7th place overall (6th male) finish.  I'm sure you were the oldest of the fast guys.  Not sure what I am doing next...searching the net for something in October (18/19, 25/26).  Let me know if you find anything interesting...

Don

WHAT / WHERE: We'll be running in Huntsville State Park. There are
numerous trails up there, so pick your poison. However, to keep
things easy, let's focus on two options: the Rocky Raccoon 15.5 mile
loop, or the RR 13.5 mile loop (which is the same as RR 15.5, but
less 2 miles after Aid 3).

RR 15.5 Miles: Below is a link to the RR 15.5 mile loop. Note that
you will have to drop water/Gatorade at what is marked as "Aid 1" as
you drive into the park.
At Aid 3, you can either continue along the trail for
15.5 miles, or jog through the campground/parking lot back to the
lodge for ~13.5 miles.

WHEN: Saturday, October 4, 2008.
CAR POOLING: For those interested in car pooling, let's meet at the
tennis center at Memorial Park at 5:45 Sat AM for a 6:00 prompt
departure.

It's not the green trail...although it is still closed as of this past
weekend. It is being cleared right now and should hopefully be open
sometime this week.

Wow you must have been close to a trip to the ER too. Man that was tough!
No Badwater for me I guess.

I'll be running the Waco 1/2 marathon on October 26th. Waco has a small
(<1000) marathon with nice scenery and I'd like to get out of the crowds
for one of these. I have not found anything else on those dates. Palo Duro
Canyon is full. Any suggestions out there HTREX?

Bob...

Glad to hear you are not a dead duck! I have run in hot races before, but
that one was the worst. After about 5 hours I could not get anything into
my system...I was running on the edge of nausea. I never hurled, but I am
sure I was running out of energy. I believe it reached the 80's by midway
and the last hour was in the low 90's. It took me about 1/2 hour after
finishing to get my eyes back in focus...I was seeing double for
awhile...kinda cool, though, looked like twice as many people at the awards
ceremony.

That Tony is quite a guy...funny that he was the guy at Bandera back in
January running around in the dark picking up the course markers. I'm
surprised I didn't see him since I did not finish until 3am.

Congratulations on your 7th place overall (6th male) finish. I'm sure you
were the oldest of the fast guys. Not sure what I am doing
next...searching the net for something in October (18/19, 25/26). Let me
know if you find anything interesting...

Don

I'm running it, and so are Kathryn and Jean...I'll have to pass on

Parks wasn't able to get out on the trails today (Green) but everything is now prepped, cleared, and ready for them to remove the three blockages on the trail. After that, it should be open.

Things to note: there was a washout just behind the maintenance area where the Centerpoint Tree Butchers clearcut. Rather than open that 40 feet of trail and repair, just go down the clearcut for a short distance to where it connects with the trail.

I know that there are some places that will need to be rerouted to flow correctly and we will get to those once we have gotten the Triangle open.
Thanks again for the patience.

Thanks Michelle!!! I'm going to need it!! When's Palo
Duro? Next weekend? I've heard so many great things
about that race, I hope to be there next year if it's
still being held.

Preparing for Heartland has been sort of like getting
ready for a hurricane except I won't be needing
propane..

I wish you were too, I'd be guaranteed to finish. I
was just looking at race reports and pictures. Did you
know there's a picture of you and Penny at a previous
Heartland race? You guys looked strong.

Penny and I had a good race that day. I remember really fast runs we did
down the hills. It was a beautiful day too. Well next year I'd like to go
up there again. I think you will like the quaint little town too. Only
about 90 people live there.

Yup, PD is 10/18...I'm looking forward to it. I've never been to
Amarillo, so that should be fun.

Don't forget to post your race report as soon as you are able.
