It sounds like there is a good amount of interest, as well as a
range of experience levels. I will investigate getting a group rate
better than their list rate. Also, it might be necessary to have two
groups: Beginner Full Game and Novice Full Game. That is unless
everyone wants to start from the fundamentals and progress to the
next class level together.
I've been "playing" for a little over a year, but have never taken
classes. So, I don't mind starting from the Beginners' level. Here
is the website:
http://www.capitalcitygolfschool.com/gs/classdescription.cfm?id=70#.
Once I get more information, I guess we can submit a poll to get a
consensus of want folks prefer. I'll keep you posted.

Hey Folks!
I know some of you have already felt the pressure from co-workers, clients and/or friends to pick up a golf club...despite vowing never to do so. Well, you are not alone. Capital City Golf School at East Potomac (Haines Point) offer individual and group lessons. The facilities are nice, offering two 9-hole and one 18-hole courses as well as practice range and holes, and putting greens. It's full service.
Group sessions cut down on the individual cost significantly, and it can make for a cool social/bonding/networking activity. If enough folks are interested and Trenton thinks it a good idea, maybe we make it a future GWBAA activity.
Anyone Interested???

The letter which was stated in the previous message is below:
June 16, 2005
Dear Family and Friends,
Hello, everyone. I hope this letter finds you in good health and
spirits and that you have had a good year thus far. In the nearly two
years that I have been at college, I have had the opportunity to grow
a lot both as a person and as a student. I have changed my academic
focus from English and American Literature and Language to African
American Studies and have finally decided to settle on African
Studies and Government while also pursuing a certification program in
public education so that I may teach high school history after I
graduate from Harvard. This personal growth has been brought about
through numerous ordeals and experiences that have come to shape my
college career. The most significant non-scholastic undertaking that
I have been a part of so far has been my involvement in the Phillips
Brooks House Association (PBHA), an independent, Harvard student-run,
non-profit organization located on campus. PBHA does work in and
around Boston in conjunction with various community partners to bring
about and advocate for social change through public service. With
1,800 volunteers annually, PBHA is the largest extracurricular
activity at Harvard and I am proud to have been a small part of such
a historic and important organization as this.
In my past year and a half at Harvard, I am proud to have been
involved in every type of program format that PBHA offers at
different points in the year. During the academic terms, I am
involved in the Mission Hill Mentor Program, the Mission Hill After
School Program, and two programs within an overall CHANCE program
that provide homework help and college counseling for local public
high school students. During the 2004 Spring Break of my freshmen
year, I participated in an Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Trip to
Mississippi where I visited numerous 1960s and `70s Civil Rights
movement landmarks including the assassination sites of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. and Medgar Evers; helped build a home for homeless
residents of Jackson, Mississippi; and volunteered at an after school
recreational and academic community center in the city. Despite these
wonderful experiences during the academic term and with ASB, my
greatest experience in PBHA may have been last summer when I worked
as a Senior Counselor in one of PBHA's Summer Urban Programs (SUP) in
the aforementioned Mission Hill neighborhood of Roxbury in Boston.
The Mission Hill Summer Program (MHSP) is now in its 15th year of
operation and continues to serve a group of 80 children every summer
drawn almost exclusively from the Alice Taylor and Mission Main
public housing developments in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood. Every
summer, a group of college students moves to the neighborhood and
works with parents, community partners, and local teenagers to
completely run this summer camp that functions as, essentially, an
autonomous non-profit organization complete with a 5-figure budget,
over 20 staff, and numerous licensing and food regulations. The three-
fold role of the MHSP and the various other SUP camps throughout
Boston and Cambridge is vital to the city's communal well-being.
First, the SUP camps are perennially the lowest-cost day camps during
the summer in the entire Greater Boston area and allow working
families to attend work as normal without worrying about their
children's daily supervision. Secondly, through academic enrichment,
local field trips, and community service projects, children are able
to continue learning and engaging in meaningful activities during
their otherwise inactive summers. Thirdly, the employment of inner-
city youth during the summer is immensely important as funds from the
City of Boston for teenage employment have continuously decreased
since the 1990s while youth violence during the summer has
continuously risen. I personally and emotionally confronted this
problem of youth violence as I was charged with the task of consoling
a 10 year-old camper of mines last summer whose friend had been shot
while standing next to him in a Boston city park as disputing drug
dealers ran past the kids while shooting, never stopping although
children were directly in the line of fire.
This summer, I have the esteemed honor and immense responsibility of
working as the Director of the Mission Hill Summer Program. Along
with one Co-Director, I will be placed in charge of roughly 100 full-
time staff, part-time staff, and campers in Boston's inner-city.
Former PBHA volunteers have gone on to truly great things and
included Rhodes Scholars, U.S. Senators, and free world-leading U.S.
Presidents such as Franklin Delano Roosevelt. More specifically,
former MHSP Directors have gone into public education, as I plan to
do, and have founded and run numerous charter schools in the Boston,
Roxbury, and Mission Hill communities alike that consistently far
surpass state averages for public schools on state standardized
tests. The successes of these individuals is now something I look
towards as a source of inspiration as I assume the leadership of this
wonderful program and plans are heavily underway for this year's SUP
camps, PBHA's largest undertaking every year. The first part of the
planning for the SUP camps is always the daunting task of fundraising
and having to come up with nearly $50,000 to run these illustrious
and comprehensive programs is no easy job. For these reasons, I ask
you for your help in donating as well as assisting us in soliciting
donations from any and everyone that can give. NO AMOUNT is too small
and all monetary donations are, of course, tax-deductible and go
towards making this summer as great as can be for this community and
its most precious and often overlooked treasures, its amazing
children. Checks should be made payable to the Mission Hill Summer
Program and online donations can be given by credit card at
www.pbha.org by clicking on "PBHA", then "Support", and then the "One-
Time Gift" option. On that page, please specify change
the "Designation" box to "Specific Need" and specify "Mission Hill
Summer Program" as the recipient of your gift by placing our camp's
name in the "Specific Needs" box.
Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions
regarding the program or would like more information about its past,
present, or future. Have an excellent day.

Information about the Mission Hill Summer Program:
The Mission Hill Summer Program/Camps are for kids from public
housing developments throughout Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Some of the areas of community development that the camp focus on
include: educating youth about the history of the community,
decreasing violent tension with individuals from different cultural
and racial backgrounds (implementing conflict resolution techniques),
understanding the impact of gentrification on the residents, and
other issues.
There are also similar summer camps in Washington,DC and New York,
NY. Plans are underway to expand this initiative to other major
cities.
How can you help? - This organization is in dire need of supplies and
other necessities. Whatever you can contribute would be
appreciated.

My name is Deeonna Farr, I am new to the organization but I just
wanted to as for your input on this issue. Below is a copy of an e-
mail I sent to the Asst Director to the Graduate Career Center who I
meet at the "Future of Black Graduate Students" Forum put on by the
Black Graduate Student Assoc. (Which was a great event and frankly I
was surprised that so many faculty from so many departments were
seriously interested in finding ways to increase the enrollment and
retention of Black graduate students). In addition to discussing
SPHHS career guidance needs I think it would be a good idea to
discuss the career needs of Black alumni on the graduate and
undergraduate level, as alumni I do think that it is important that
we develop relationships with organizations like the career centers
and the undergraduate and graduate associations so that students
don't feel so isolated. What I am asking you for is your input on
career guidance for students of color at GWU and ways on in which it
can be enhanced? Or if any of you would like to join me when I meet
with the Asst Director? Thank you in advance for your response.
Hello my name is Deeonna and we met at the Future of Black Grad
Students Forum that was sponsered by the BGSA. I was the student you
spoke to that talked about the issues of working and attending
school at the same time. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to get in
touch with you sooner but I've finally obtained a new position so
things have been hectic the past few weeks. I definitely wanted to
talk to you and see if there is something we can do to lobby for or
find a way to create a separate Career Counselor for the School of
Public Health or even a way to promote the career center's public
health resources or even to create some type of online GW Public
Health Alumni Student Connection site. I really feel the
standard "Most people get a job through their special project"
response to the question of post program employment is really not
true and leaves many public health students unprepared to begin
their career. I'm looking forward to discussing this matter with
you.
Come out and enjoy some free pizza and learn briefly how you could
receive a $2,500 scholarship!
The National Black MBA Association's DC Chapter is offering
scholarships for undergraduate and graduate African American students
seeking business-related degrees. They want the students of GW to be

where awarded. The NBMBAA is coordinating an information session to
inform students of the scholarships available and the organization in
general. The deadline for the completed applications is May 23,
2005.

Thank you to all of those who participated in the 2005 GWBAA Survey.
Below you will find a list of short-term and long-term initiatives
that GWBAA hopes to implement your continued support and assistance.
SHORT-TERM INITIATIVES:
-Establish a true web-presence
-Provide networking/fellowship opportunities
-Create a mass-distribution list of GWBAA members
-Advocate and lobby for the Black GW community
LONG-TERM INITIATIVES:
-Create on-line newsletter that highlights the successes of GWBAA
members
-Establish a gala during the Colonials Weekend to raise GWBAA
scholarship money to send Blacks to GW (and to help with their
expenses)
-Become mentors to Black students presently at GW
WHAT WE HAVE IMPLEMENTED THUS FAR:
We have created the web presence by using the Yahoo! Groups® for
our
website: (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gwbaa/). We are also in the
works of creating a mass-distribution list that will enable GWBAA
members to contact one another. We are also in the works of sitting
down with GW Administrators to verbalize our presence and to begin
advocating on the behalf of the GW Black community.
Please check back for the details of our March networking/fellowship
event!
As always, if there any questions or comments, please write us:
