Hi,

There is a new CD just came out on Times Musics, in which Gulzar saab has
introduced Tulsidas and his works. I'm yet to get hold of this CD as I last
inquired about it on last weekend and it was not yet available in the market.
Though I found a very detailed and great report on the same by Santosh Ojha. Go
through the same and get the CD if you are interested. I'm sure it'll be a worth
buy. My views on the CD after listening to it.

Enjoy!!

Stressing that the film industry has to reorient itself to reflect the
aspirations and needs of the children of the contemporary society, noted
lyricist Gulzar today said that most of the Bollywood films are insensitive
to aspirations of children.

"One could say that most of the films made in Bollywood are just childish
even when they were made for adults, due to their lack of social perspective
and insensitive to aspirations of children," he said.

Gulzar was speaking at the Open Forum on the theme of "Is it time to
redefine children's cinema?" at the 16th International Childrens Film
Festival here.

He said that the Indian film industry has still not realised the huge
potential of the childrens films market and added, "Children films need
original ideas and cannot be produced on borrowed thoughts and themes.

Yesterday I went to Prithvi Theatre to watch Attaniyan, a play based on Gulzar
Saab's stories and interlaced with his poetry. It was there for three days and
while booking the tickets my wife asked me, if we book on the first day, is
there any probability to meet Gulzar saab there. I said, I'm not sure so don't
book on that basis, book when it is convenient for you to travel to that side of
the city. So we booked for the third and last day of the show.

As luck would have it, when we reached Prithvi yesterday, we saw him sitting in
the caf. First reaction, I went numb. I wanted to go across to him but didn't
want to disturb him as he was sitting with some friends. I took my phone out to
switch it off and I noticed that my hands were shivering. Gulzar saab mere
saamne!! The play was at 9 and it was 8.20 pm. Such a humble man, he got up to
get into the queue so early. No preferential treatment.

Well, I gathered courage to meet him in the way, touched his feet and told him
that I am a big fan of his. HE TOOK MY HANDS IN HIS. And I said, 'aapke aabhari
hain hum jo aap likhte hain.' He moved on. Kuch kaha ya nahin, pata nahin. Uske
baad kya hua zyada mujhe pata nahin. We stood in the line with some 4-5 people
between us. We chose to sit just behind him in the play. Incidentally, Vishal
Bhardwaj and Rekha were sitting in the row behind us.

Ab aap log janna chahoge ki play mein kya tha. It was based on three stories,
Baas, Atthaniyan and I don't know the name of the third story. I didn't read the
leaflet that was given. Main sirf saab ko dekh raha tha. The play had poetry
which I haven't read/heard before, except the song Atthani si zindagi. Don't
remember much, all I remember is that it was beautiful, as usual. Kai baaar
rooye khade hue mere aur ek baar aansoo tapke. Jo likha tha gazab ka tha. Bus
sab jaldi se khatam ho gaya sab. We followed him till he sat in the car, but
from a distance. Mujhe laga kabhi bhi palat ke bolenge, peecha kyon kar rahe ho
mera? :-)

Pavan ji, do guzarish hain aapse. Ek, can you please check if the poetry in the
play forms a part of any book? Doosra, saab ke liye kuch likha hai maine, wo
dena chahta hoon. Kabhi saab se milne ka mauka lage to zaroor bataiyega. Ehsaan
hoga.

Aap to jante hi hain, ye pyaas bhujti hi kahan hai. Aur jaisa Gulzar saab ne
likha tha, ye zindagi atthani hi reh jayegi, rupaya nahin ban payegi.

Regards

Vishal

Gulzar Saab's stories and interlaced with his poetry. It was there for three
days and while booking the tickets my wife asked me, if we book on the first
day, is there any probability to meet Gulzar saab there. I said, I'm not sure so
don't book on that basis, book when it is convenient for you to travel to that
side of the city. So we booked for the third and last day of the show.

As luck would have it, when we reached Prithvi yesterday, we saw him sitting in
the café.

Regards

Vishal

Hi Rahul,

I was really happy for you yesterday as it was like re-living my own past when
I met Gulzar Saab for the very first time 4 and a half years back, courtesy
Pavan Ji. Moreover, the way you have shared your feelings with all of us has
made my eyes wet, literally, because as I was reading through the mail, I was
recalling the energy, anxietyand excitement you had yesterday. On the front of
being thankful to Pavan Ji and me, I can just say one thing that I am really
happy that I was able to bring happiness in someone's life. And don't Sir keep
telling us the same with each ofHis works that humanity, life and love are the
mostimportant things in life? We all are in the same boat. 'Bas koi thoda pahle
chadh gaya, koi thoda der se.'

Keepreliving the moments.

Enjoy,
Mohit

Festival !!

Hi All,

I just want to share my awesome experience of meeting with Gulzar sahab at 11th
edition of Osian's Cinefan Film Festival.

25th Oct would have been a ordinary day in my life. I even didnt know till the
last moment of 24th Oct ( till 12 in night ) that what difference a the start of
next day is going to make in my life. Now I can say fortunately the lights were
off till 12 and Back service of our society was not working. when it came after
12 I could see Pavan Jee's mail about the "Gulzar saab felicitated at Osians" at
Delhi. Fortunately Pavan Jee was online tha time and I asked him if Gulzar sahab
is in Delhi and if I can see him. Instantly he replied and gave mobile number of
Mohit Kataria and asked me to be in touch with him, as he had the complte
information about the event. I just thought, ok there will be a festival going
on I might not have a luck to see him. But the the firs tthing I did today
morning was I called up Mohit and belive me I didnt felt that I was talking to
him for the first time. He told me the time, the venue, and readily and happily
took me to the
event. still I was not sure that I can get to see him. "Jis lamhe ka itne saalon
se intezzar iyan tha voh itne aasani se ho jaaye yeh maanane ke liye mera man
taiyaar nahi tha" and then by 11:15.....I could get to see him, the legend
himself, live and talking. Belive me...I jsut cant belive I happen to see him.
The way he speaks, engages the audience, his pauses, awesome.

Friends my good time started when I could see him and listen to his session on
Hisotry of Lyrics for 2 hours just form the 10 distance. I cant recollect what
he was saying as listening to him in live was my first and long wished
experience. The session continued for about two hours and I thot "itne jaldi
khatma ho gaya". So my first wish to see him and second wish to listen him and
his session in live was fulfilled.

The experts from his session can be taken by Mohit, as for me " Mere pair Zamen
nahi they and dil-o-dimag par suroor chhaya hua tha."
Now as we human beings are kind of not saitsfied by anything, as two of wishes
already fulfiiled, I made a third wish to touch his feet and after the session,
when he was coming down from dias, with the help of Mohit, I could fulfill my
third wish. I went to him and touched his feet and what the expericne was.
Gulzar sahab has a quality of acknowledging everyhting. He acknowledged my
touching his feet. It is a bliss for me.

Later when he went out, I took a chance and got his autograph on my first owned
book of Him, Pukhraaj. I cant belive, I had got that book in my final year of
gradutaion in 2001 after selling of my Statastics subject books. I had wished to
get his autograph on the same and it took me 8 years. But I got it. My fourth
wish was fulfilled.

Friends, series of forutnates event was not over yet :) After lunch when sir was
resting in his VIP lounge, I could meet him. First we were stopped by the
auhtorities there, but when Gulzar Sahab saw Mohit, he said "Unhe aane do". Cant
Imagine. Sir talked to us and then we got few snaps clicked with him. Few snaps
with him !! I have seen him in snaps only and sometimes in interviews. I had got
snaps cliked with him with his acknowledgment :) Fifth wish was blessed.

And finally when we were leaving I got a chance to say a few words to him.
Belive me, I was speechless through the series of events. Even when I tocuhed
his feet or got his autograph, I was speechless. and at last I could a sher
written by him and I just told him that you know. He listened it and said "Thank
you." "Unke aage ek sher kahna maane, soorak ke aage teeli jalana". Still he
listened, and made me feel that the liked.

Later we attained next session of his with Vishal Bhardwaj and cast of Kaminey
and he beautifully narrated association of him with Vishal.

Friends I am so carried away by the total experience that I would have been
slipped in topic in my above writing, but its all about the heavenly experinece
of the positive energy and aura of Gulzar sahab, that "Aaj kal paaon zameen par
nahi padenge mere."

I would like to sincerely thanks to Pavan Jee who made this possible, gave the
contact of right person at right time and Mohit Jee, who didnt let me feel like
we were meeting for the first time. Made me comfortable and then tried to make
my each and every dream blessed with such a wonderful experience. The have
experienced the flow of The positivity of Gulzar sahab through Pavan jee and
Mohit.

Thanks a lot Pavan Jee & Mohit for everthing happened today which made 25th OCt
as the most memorable day of my life.

Thanks & Regards,
--Rahul

*I am very fond of todays generation, I think they should change their
poetry to suit todays taste *
------------------------------

* Breath of fresh air: Gulzars popularity lies in his ability to change
with the times. *

Pick up *100 Lyrics of Gulzar*, translated by Sunjoy Shekhar, and you will
find most of your favourite songs in it. English translations of Gulzars
songs give an interesting perspective leaving you thinking Why didnt I
ever notice the lyrics of this song earlier?

A case in point is the popular *Chhaiya Chhaiya *(Dil Se). On the face of
it, its just a love song. But it is not so; it is essentially a Sufi song
about eternal love for the Divine. Only Gulzar saab can turn a complicated
philosophy into a popular mainstream song reaching out to every individual,
says Sunjoy. According to him, one of the reasons for Gulzars popularity is
his versatility and ability to change with the times.
  Around the story

But Gulzar says, Songs come from the scripts, film and the character. It
is knitted around the story. *Beedi Jalaile *had to be written in the
language of the character, which is the U.P. Avadhi. It would have been
absurd to write the song in Marwari or any other dialect. I do have a knack
of different Indian dialects. I am a listener and a collector of Indian folk
music, and I am still learning. I guess thats why I am able to write such
versatile lyrics.

In a career spanning five decades, Gulzar has lived the changes in Indian
film music. From stalwarts like Madan Mohan and S.D. Burman in the 1940s
and 1950s, to Vishal Shekhar and Shankar Mahadevan, the music has evolved
continuously. There was a definite change in the 1980s and the 1990s when
Rahman came in with his own style of mixing our folk songs with western
music. His style of music is very fresh and separate and stands out.

He feels that people still admire the melody and songs of the 1960s and
1970s. Earlier, composers like Madan Mohan and Khyayam knew a lot of Indian
classical and folk music. The generation today has a very low understanding
of the culture and heritage of Indian music. Even if they do listen to some
folk music, they listen only to the notes and not the words. They are more
interested in item numbers! However, I feel that pop music does not have to
be meaningless. They can include folk music and words in their songs, as
they are independent and not restricted by the character or script.
  No need for nostalgia

However, he gracefully accepts that music changes with the rhythm of life
and that you cannot be nostalgic all the time. In todays world when people
are living in 20-storeyed buildings, you cannot write a song like *Main
tulsi tere aangan ki*. Where will you plant a *tulsi* on the 20th floor? In
a world where news travels in the blink of an eye with e-mails and mails go
by couriers, people will never relate to a *Dakiya dak laya*. How can you
write such lyrics when there are no *dakiyas*?

The one change he cannot accept is remixes. The original songs are
beautiful and pure. Dont pollute those times and music. Its like
repainting Ajanta and Ellora to suit modern times! I am very fond of todays
generation, and I think they should change their poetry and songs to suit
todays taste, but not repaint old ones.

As for his personal favourites, he laughingly asks how could there be a
single or even a few favourites, when the favourite changes with mood, time
and company. However, he does name some of which *Dekhna mere sir
se*(Bunty aur Babli) stands tall. A few others are:
*Mera kuch samaam*, *Chhod aaye hum who galiyan*, *Aasman ke aage ek aur
aasman hoga*. For a man who has won the Padma Bhushan and recently the Oscar
for *Jai ho*, his modesty comes across as a breath of fresh air. Truly, if
ever there was a legend, Gulzar is he!

Hi All,

As Pavan ji just mentioned, it was a dream to meet Gulzar Saab once again and
that too in Delhi and the dream came true very nicely and beautifully, just
like a dream. On one evening I met him thrice and what more could I have asked
for apart from the fact that Gulzar Saab actually recognized me and greeted me
with all His usual love and affection. Let me confess one simple fact today,
every time I meet Him, I fall in love all over again and I become speechless
everytime He is in close vicinity of mine. I rehearse 100s of times what will I
say or ask when I meet Him but as soon as He comes in front of me, I just go
blank, just like His one of the poems...'कोरे काग़ज़ पे
लिख के नाम तेरा' And believe me, He is 'Mukammal'.

Let me tell you all of those friends and fellow group members who have not met
Him in person, you are really unfortunate. I'm not saying because I've met Him
but I'm saying because He is all the sensibility and humility personified. We
all who love Him for His words, when we meet Him, we start loving Him for other
reasons beyond His words and works as a really great human being. I just don't
know when will I be able to remain normal in His presence but I really wish it
to happen soon so that I could actually share with Him all the thoughts that
I've thought to share with Him.

More on the event, it was a memorable evening. There was a screening of a movie
from Romania if I heard it correctly. The title of movie was 'Hooked' and it was
all about relations between two central characters. The festival is on till 30th
of Oct. and Gulzar Saab, Vishal Bhardwaj and Rekha Bhardwaj are present for a
couple of sessions tomorrow as well. I hope to catch them again tomorrow. More
on it tomorrow.

I am on cloud seven and going to sleep in the dreams and going to live the dream
tomorrow once again ... with a very amazing feeling... आज कल
पाँव ज़मीं पर नहीं पड़ते मेरे....

There is so much going in my head and heart but not coming in words... you can
understand my condition.... so as of now, this much only....

Mohit

The 11th edition of Osian's Cinefan Film Festival kicked off today with the
presentation of Lifetime Achievement Award to noted lyricist-director and
poet Gulzar.

"I am thankful for the recognition which is an assurance that what you have
done is okay. If you do more work then it is better but an artist's work
needs to be shared with the public," said Gulzar who was felicitated by
Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit at the opening ceremony here.

The poet-lyricist who was accosted on stage by film director Vishal
Bharadwaj and his singer wife Rekha said that his career till now had been a
beautiful journey. Rekha sang a few songs like "Tere Ishq me" and Tujhse
naaraz nahi" among others.

"The journey has been beautiful. I just saw a picture outside and told
someone that I gave the clap for this shot," reminisced Gulzar after
accepting the award.
