Dear Friends ,
When I was bench pressing in the Gym , several months ago , I began with a
20 kgs load and over the next few weeks labouriously went up to a
respectable 40 kgs . I was following the incremental approach of weight
training where by you go on increasing in small steps each week .
One day I tried to do some Hindu Push ups . ( Namaskar ) I could hardly do
a couple . I was surprised . I thought that if I was lifting that much
weight in bench press , I should very well do many many push ups . So I went
up to the instructor and asked him the question ." When I am able to bench
press 40 kgs why am not able to do five namaskars ? " He replied " The
muscles you are employing in the two exercises are different . So lifting
more weight in bench press will not result in doing more namaskars . "
I was not satisfied with the answer . So I went around and did some research
on my own. I came to know that in these two exercises the main muscles used
are the same . The pectorals , the triceps and the front shoulder . Back to
square one . Why am I able to do bench press and not namaskars ?
So one day I took two weighing scales , put my palms on them and asked my
son , Aadarsh , to observe the weight reading on them . I did some Hindu
push ups that way . Aadarsh exclaimed " 75 kgs ." This was a revelation for
me . I got the answer for my question , realised that the question itself
was wrong and got a completely new direction.
I realised that doing Hindu push ups was way more difficult than bench press
. My shoulders in Hindu push ups were facing a load of 75 kgs in a compound
movement ( lift and rotate ) while on the bench press I am only facing 40
kgs in a simple movement ( up and down ) . So the simple answer to my
earlier question would be " Because your muscles are not strong enough. "
But this brought me to another revelation . When my muscles are able to take
75 kgs of live weight even in compound movement why am I struggling with
only 40 kgs of dead weight in a simple movement . My queston should have
been , " When I am able to do one Hindu push up at 75 kgs , why am I lifting
only 40 kgs in bench press ? "
That day , my bench press weight went up to 65 kgs ! A quantum jump . Even
the trainer acknowledged that much saying " It is not the body , but the
brain lifts . "
In most learning situations , we start at some place and then take an easy
incremental approach . Something like last years figure over this years
figures in corporate context . Though this approach has its own merit ,
quantum jumps cannot be achieved by the same unless we think differently .

Anand

Dear Friends ,
An example of the power of Sanskrit Language and the command on the
language of the poet ( I do not remember his name ) is the following
couplet . He has used only two alphabets y and a , one half consonant
and one vowel . If you take different sandhis ( joints ) different
words are created which together give you the meaning that is given in
the bracket . This is similar to the example oft given in Thai
language where depending on the intonation the meaning of the word
changes . The word May ( pronounced My ) has five different meanings
when used with different tones . So May may may may may may ? means
Does new silk burn ?
To give you a flavour of its mystic poetry, take a look at this:
' Yayayayayayayayayayayayayayayaya,
Yayayayayayayayayayayayayayayaya.'
[ Translation: The paduka which adorn the Lord, which help in the
attainment of all that is good and auspicious, which give knowledge,
which cause the desire, which remove all that is hostile, which have
attained the Lord, which are used for going and coming from one place
to another, by which all places of this world can be reached, these
paduka are for Lord Vishnu]
And now new evidence has been coming up that studying Sanskrit
improves mathematics scores and physics scores ( something I have been
saying for many many years ) . Happy learning .

Dear Friends ,
The workshop was conducted on Sunday . There were 30 participants . As
I received a number of mails from the group showing interest in the
topic , I am giving here the summary of the workshop .
For the purpose of the workshop ,astrology was used as an umbrella
term encompassing Astrology , Numerology , Palmistry , Graphology ,
Body language interpretation , Intuitionary guidance , Vaastu , and
allied techniques .
Participant Profile
Most of the participants were well versed with at least couple of
astrological techniques . They were from different walks of life ,
executives , professionals , independent business owners , housewives
, artists , architects .
Applications discussed .
1. Recruitment / Selection of employees
2. Signature Analysis / Graphology to provide important directions to
the interviewers as to which points they should check out in the given
candidates . If the analyst feels that the candidate is not likely to
perform well in face of stress , the interviewers may resort to a
stress interview to see if that is the case .
3. Deciding auspicious time for inauguration , incorporation ,
starting new venture .
4. Design company logo , uniforms , colours .
5. Decide branch locations for offices
6. Decide sitting arrangement for key personnel.
7. Design factory /shopfloor/ office / building layout
8. Matching people with timings - Match night owl profiles with night
shifts . This can prove useful especially in selection of call center
employees .
9. Behavioural interview
10. Help in selecting helpful partners , advisers , allies .
11. Provide additional intelligence on clients , suppliers , joint
venture partners
12. Help in determining auspicious and favourable times for important meetings
13. Design stress relievers , motivators , challenges for individuals
given their astro profile .
14. Decide a name for the enterprise .
15. Compare candidate profile with existing team profile to see if the
candidate fits in the organizational culture .
16. Help in deciding timeline .
Behavioural Interview Case study
A company scenario was given with the need to appoint managers in four
disciplines. An unknown candidate was to be matched with the
behavioural profile given for each of the posts . The behavioural
profile was based on the job description of the position . The
interview was to be conducted without verbal interaction with the
candidate .The candidate was presented to the participants . The
participants decided to use palmistry and body language techniques for
this purpose and successfully matched the candidate with the job
profile .
The participants agreed that the role of astrology was an advisory and
not executive , in that an astrologer would necessarily have to work
with some technical expert while giving suggestions . An astrologer
may not have adequate information about the nature of the business ,
market conditions , prevailing practices , technical issues or
limitations , safety norms to make direct comments . He will have to
work in association with an expert with the relevant expertise . For
example when suggesting Vastu locations he will have to work with the
architect and structural engineer to make sure that the building is
complying with safety , aesthetic and practical norms alongwith Vastu
norms .
This workshop was a mirror image of the workshop I had conducted at
MTHR Global meet at Lonavala . The reason I say mirror image is that
at MTHR all participants were Corporate HR executives so the stress
was on Astrology while in this workshop all the participants were
astrologers so the stress was on Corporate Applications .

Subject: [GDP] Bohni - The first sale
To: mthrglobal@..., growthanddevelopment@yahoogroups.com
Date: Monday, February 9, 2009, 12:50 PM
The concept of Bohni
In India there is a widely believed concept of Bohni or the first sale
of the day . If the first sale of the day is good , the traders expect
the day to be quite fruitful . Right or wrong , I too have experienced
it . If the first customer you face turns out to be problematic ,
fussy and leaves dissatisfied or the first transaction does not
fructify you may not get good sales that day . It happens !
Sellers go to great extent to ensure a good bohni . They offer first
sale discount . or first sale advantage to the customer . They offer
additional services . They spend much more time on the first customer
, than the subsequent customers . Stock exchanges have special muhurta
trading sessions to usher in a prosperous new year .
Today in the morning , I went out with my wife on some errands . A
chikoo seller was walking up the street . He approached me . He said "
Saab , I will like to have bohni from your hands . " I was reluctant
to buy chikoos which do not have any consumption at home , but I
myself being a seller I did not want his first sale to be dud . So I
told him , " Okay , give me five rupees worth " He says " Aarey saab ,
is there any sale of five rupees ? I will make it ten rupees . " I
told him " I did not want to buy , I am just doing so sothat you are
on your way on to prosperity . " So very reluctantly he gave me three
chikoos . The going rate was eight for ten so I should have received
four without bargaining . I took it and put in the dickey .
It suddenly struck me . What we call as Bohni , perhaps in management
parlance it is called as Law of attraction . When our first sale is
good one , no hassle , good profit , we go on to the day with a
positive mental attitude and gather much more sale . If our first sale
is not so good , lots of bargaining . lots of complaining , lots of
dissatisfaction on our side , we approach the day with negative mental
attitude and whatever follows follows .
Till now I was putting the onus of good bohni at the doorstep of the
customer . Today I realised that the onus is on me , irrespective of
the customer or his behaviour or his purchase .
The chikoowala had got a good customer in the morning . No bargaining
, no sales talk , just direct sales . But still he was dissatisfied
with the volume and delivered a high priced product . At the end of
the transaction , I am satisfied as I feel I have done a good deed
while he is dissatisfied as having received a dud customer .
Whose Bohni is good ?

Dear Raghunathanji ,
A great read and a great way to introspect . We are too intelligent to
be useful and thus only when we go to other countries that we become
productive .
But even there , Indians have not really distinguished themselves . In
South East Asia , especially Thailand , there are proverbs which say
if you meet an Indian and a snake on the road , kill the Indian first
!
I believe that for long time we remained a closed economy where
efficiency or effectiveness have no premium . Does not matter how much
you churn or how inefficiently you churn everything remains inside
only . Our limitations have begun to show and matter once we have
opened up and have to compete on international scene. The material we
use for our airports are the best and the costliest , yet the
bathrooms are always dirty , the taps either leaking or dry and so on
and so forth .
I will give two examples of two of our favourite past times . Talking
without depth .
When the Mandal report came up there used to be hot discussion about
reserved seats etc etc . At least ten people had put forth their
opinions . When I took out a copy of Mandal report and asked how many
had read it . None had . They were arguing based on their opinions
based on the opinions of someone else .
Similarly astrology bashing is also a favourite pastime. One example
that is oft quoted to show that astrology is nonscientific is the
statement made against astrology by some 186 scientists . Nobody has
read the statement . The statement is only the opinion of the
scientists based on hearsay - having no scientific basis by itself !
Further , no need to get depressed . An opinion similar to you has
been expressed by the great sage Vyasa himself , who threw up his
hands in despair and said ,
Urdhva-bAhur-viraumi-eSha
na hi kaSchit SR^iNoti mAm! |
dharmAt-arthaScha kAmaScha
sa kimarthaM na sevyate? ||
Vyasa himself uses a
very colloquial way of expressing anguish. He says,
"With both my hands up (in a beseeching manner) I'm literally shouting at
the top of my voice, but nobody listens to me!
Only through dharma should artha and kAma be acquired.
Why is this not heeded to?"
Here, rauti = shouts, roars.
Thank you for a good read .

Dear Friends ,
The TV shows , newspapers and the media are full of news about the Satyam
Saga . They are calling it by various names but the theme is that Mr. Raju
seems to have perpetrated a fraud .
I believe that we need to give proper weight to the fact that he has
confessed and confessed in writing .
You may say that he has let go when he could not hide it anymore . When the
beans were going to spill anyways he dropped the bag . But I feel that we
need to respect the fact that he has confessed .
Confession does not reduce the punishment but creates a good precedent . In
India confessions are a rare commodity and acceptance is even more rare .
There was match fixing scam - no Indian confessed to it , there was cement
scam , no politician confessed to it , there was Harshad Mehta scam , nobody
confessed to it , in fact some banks severely inflated the losses they
sufferred and coolly put the bill on Harshad Mehta name and so on and so
forth . Confession and cooperation with the authorities seems to be more
western phenomenon - for example the rogue share broker from Singapore
confessed to the scam , served his sentence , the South African Cricketer
confessed to his part in match fixing and wrapped up his test career , some
politicians in Britain and elsewhere owned up their extramarital affairs and
paid the price .
In this light we neet to acknowledge the confession of Mr. Raju .

Dear Friends ,
I asked this question at one of the recent workshop . " How many of you
think that short term training can really make a big impact . " Out of
twenty only two hands went up , that too gingerly . Then I asked them if
they could remember any recent incident where training had made a big
difference . No incidents were sighted.
I then reminded about the 26 / 11 terrorist attacks on Mumbai . All the
terrorists were young boys between 20 -25 years of age . None of them had a
military background . None of them came from martial families . They had
received just about one month's training at some jungle camp . Yet the
training came out to be so effective that they were able to hold the police
, commando forces and army at bay for over four days besides creating a lot
of casualties and mayhem.
This reminded me of the 1984 operation Blue Star when the Indian Army had to
attack the Golden Temple at Amritsar. The army was equipped with all latest
gadgets and trained manpower . They were seasoned fighters . They had stun
grenade , machine guns , sten guns , maps of the premises and good
intelligence information . But they had underestimated the security incharge
of the Golden Temple Major General Retd Shahbeg Singh . This was the same
person who had earlier trained Mukti Bahini to fight guerilla warfare with
the Pakistani Army . He devised his strategy with lots of cunning . All he
had was 250 young and middle aged recruits .None of them with military
training . Some of them were even petty criminals , thugs etc . But he
trained them . Arranged them at strategic locations . Fortified the golden
temple against every conceivable type of attack possible . He even created
underground maze of passages by joining underground waterways and gutters .
He mounted machine guns at 12 inch heights to mow down crawling jawans . He
put up screens at windows sothat stun grenades could not be lobbed in . He
fortified his machine gun locations sothat they could easily withstand small
arm fire . This arrangement worked so well that the Indian Army had to
suffer large number of casualties and had to struggle for five days to gain
control of the Golden Temple premises . They had to bring in Vijayanta tanks
and howitzer guns which are used in big battles to blow the fortifications
before they could get a foothold .
One trainer made the difference.

Dear Friends ,
Yesterday I was chatting with Ganapati Date and during the course of
conversation he remarked " Why do companies have to cut costs ? " They
should not incur costs anyway . They should always be making investments ! "
This made me think . It seems to be true .
When we are cutting costs are we really cutting them from the profit and
loss account or from the balance sheet ? Most of the cuts are seen to be
from the balance sheet and not the P/ F account though in the immediate
aftermath the P/F statement seems to be better off . In the long run it will
affect the balance sheet . But then in the long run everyone is dead !
I feel in the corporates we remain in a self created make believe world . We
keep adding frills and fancies which are not productive but which fuel our
unbounded ego / public image etc etc . As success has multiple fathers , all
the self created inefficiencies get eulogised for one reason or the other
and when the sales comes down , or the tide goes out , the rocks on the
shore become more than evident !
Now we try to correct these past mistakes with blunders . We cut the
advertising budget , we cut the training budget , we retrench employees and
we keep the plant closed . This is exactly similar to going through endless
crunches in the gym in the hope that our bloated tummy will get back to the
six fold state . Wrong exercise , done wrongly , for wrong reasons , leading
to futility and another up and down business cycle .

Dreaming is important. More important is taking at least one step a day ,
however insignificant , towards the goal of the dream .
Think about it ......

Is Vedic Astrology the world's oldest con? <http://www.udaypai.in/?p=15>Read
the original article here . Given below is my response to the same .
--
Dear Uday ,
Thanks for a thought provoking article . While I am not holding a brief for
Astrology or Jyotish , I will like to point out some of the misundestandings
/ misinterpretations which have crept in .
Astrology does not mean Jyotish . Astrology can be a part of Jyotish but
cannot be equal to Jyotish . Jyotish means the quest for knowledge or
knowledge itself . It is one of the six vedangas , Kalpa , Shiksha , Nirukta
, Vyakarana , Jyotish , Chhanda . Jyoti = knowledge Isha = seeking .
Now the references from scriptures .
You can get the definition of Jyotish from Taitariya Upanishad . Here is the
link .
http://is1.mum.edu/vedicreserve/upanishads/fifteen_upanishads_08_taittiriya.pdf
In Ramayana while describing Shree Ram's birth though Sage Valmiki has not
given any horoscope , he clearly says Nakshatra Purnavasu devata Aditi . Now
Nakshatra is astronomical reference but the devata is definitely
astrological reference.
In Mahabharata , Sahadev was expert muhurtashastri . He was the one who
found the Muhurta for the Mahabharata war at the behest of Kauravas and then
Krishna had to do damage control !
Bhishma , did not want to die till Uttarayana started . Again Astrological
reference .
Sudeshna , when approached by Draupadi for the position of Dasi , tells her
in no uncertain terms " From the royal signs I see on your feet and hands ,
you must be from a high born family . I cannot employ you as Dasi but as
Sakhi . Direct reference to practice of palmistry perhaps ?
Krishna realised that Abhimanyu was listening to chakravyuha information and
that if born with that information and four arms he would be invincible in
war and would be a problem . A future problem , he solved in present by
cutting the extra arms of Abhimanyu in the womb .
So there is definite mention of Jyotish in the Scriptures .
I will deal with what is Jyotish in detail in my next response.

In Sexy Beast, Gal (Ray Winstone), a retired safecracker is enjoying a
carefree retirement on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.
Gal spends his time sunbathing on his patio, dining out with his friends and
dancing in the moonlight with his beloved wife. But then one day , Don Logan
( Ben Kingsley ) comes from London .
Don Logan is pure violence . Even when he is sitting still , you can feel
the fear . This when we have seen Ben Kingsley as Gandhi !
He never takes No for an answer and has come to Spain to recruit Gal for
safe creacking in England. He tries every tool in his arsenal to convince
Gal to come to England . Somehow Gal manages to keep his head and says No .
Don Logan boards the homebound flight but is disturbed by the NO he has
received . He is smoking a cigarette and when the airhostess tells him to
put it off , the dirty and dangerous , double dealing criminal in Don jumps
out . The words , the expression and the intent he uses to threaten his
copassengers or the guile he shows in convincing Spanish police not to
arrest him sends a chill down our spines . Shows a different dimension of
successful salesmanship .
I also admire Ben Kingsley for consenting to take up such a negative role
after enacting Gandhi ......

Dear Friends ,
Last couple of days the Jet Airways saga took the front page . The photoes
of the protesting airline staff attracted my attention .I looked at the TV
images and on the net and in the newspapers . If you see closely , you will
see that the hands of the airhostesses look all too similar . What this
could mean is that they are all from narrow band of personality profile .
This will make them easy to train due to homogeneous traits but difficult to
control in a team . This means though they are part of a team they are not
complimentary and during selection possibily easy trainability of narrow
band has been used as a criteria . Using such a criteria at recruitment
stage is fine because it eases the pressure on the training personnel but as
they progress further through the organization it is difficult to make them
work together efficiently . It is something like preparing a student to pass
the 4 th standard test . He passes the 4 th standard nicely only to fail in
the seventh standard miserably . All due to the same training !

Dear Friends ,
Recently a pilot came to meet me for counseling . He was very distraught ,
disgusted and angry . He told me that he had received a memo from his bosses
saying amongst other things that he was a seconded employee of a seconded
company . " This kind of statement is uncalled for " he gushed .
" Are you the only one who has received this memo ? "
" No . Everyone from my company has received it . "
" What do you mean from my company ? "
" Our company was taken over by this other airline sometime back . They have
absorbed all the employees . We are doing the same job that we were doing
before . Day to day management is left to us only and no major change is
there . But this memo was the last straw . "
" Do you know what seconded means ? "
" No . We even looked up the dictionary but we could not find the word . "
" Did you ask the person who sent you the memo ? "
" No . But it is such a silly thing to write . "
" But if you do not know what it means , How do you interpret it to mean
something that is derogatory ? "
" Hmm..."
This is where the foreground background conflict of gestalt comes into play
. The person obviously has some prior information or experience about this
other airline . He is interpreting the memo as the foreground based on the
background that he already has . The interpretation of the term is based on
the combined experience but is not being seen as such .
Ultimately when this was pointed out he left satisfied .
For those curious kings amongst you who want to know what seconded means
..... they can scroll down .
Taken over .

Anand

Dear Friends ,
Just read a news item where the RTO has refused permission to Mercedes buses
to ply in India . The reason is that these buses do not have a driver side
door . This door is necessary from the point of view of rule book.
No complaints about that .
The question I am asking is why do passenger cars have a door next to the
driver . For the convenience of the driver to get in and get out of the car
. That is the most probable answer . But consider this . Ninety five percent
of times in the city when you are getting down from the car it is on a
roadside . This means when we are getting down we are causing a problem to
the ongoing traffic. It is a security concern and so many accidents have
been caused due to the dual reason of narrow roads and no parking sites. In
this case is the driver door necessary or required ?
