Tumbleweeds was, for many years, a staple of Akwesasne Notes, a publication for native people located on Cornwall Island, near Kingston, Ontario.

These days, it is in a magazine format, but back in the day, forty years ago, it was a loose, large-page-size publication -- ran some fifty to sixty pages each issue -- with each page being absolutely crammed full of pasted-up clippings about natives -- the term First Nations did not exist at the time. Those clippings came from all over North America and, to some extent, from other countries. In fact, I myself contributed some of those clippings -- in the early 1970s, The (Montreal) Gazette, the newspaper where I worked in the newsroom as a clerk for thirty-nine years before taking early retirement at the end of 2007 -- contained in the newsroom a large wooden structure containing newspapers from across Canada. I was able to grab those papers before I threw them out -- needed more space all the time -- and rifle through them for clippings for the Notes.

Here is a link to Facebook where I have posted a severely-shortened version of what
I have written.

Hi, thanks for this. Have you seen the documentary "My big Fat diet?" It was interesting, as it helped so many of the "first nation" who tried it. I saw this on tv myself some years ago. I went on a very low carb/high saturated fat/moderate protein diet myself. It sure made a difference in my life.

Tumbleweeds was always a #1 favorite of mine, ahead of Blondie, Hagar the Horrible, Peanuts, Dennis the Menace, and Beetle Bailey.  Since I loved the old west, Ryan made it one in a million.  There won't be another comic strip that would come even close to Ryan's creation.

I live in an area where Tumbleweeds wasn't in the local papers. After I discovered it (many years ago) while visiting in AZ, for awhile I had the AZ newspaper sent out of state to my house JUST for those cartoons, which I cut out and saved. Since then I have every book in the U.S. with 'Weeds cartoons. I also found some on-line that were printed in other countries with cartoons I hadn't seen before that I purchased. The thing I'm really missing are the Sunday cartoons. I'd been getting them, one at a time, from the site.
http://www.tumbleweeds.com/
I've noticed that the Sunday one in there hasn't been updated in months now. Does anybody know how Ryan is? Or if that site is now being left to grow tumbleweeds and brambles in the desert?
Thanks.

I agree with your statement. In fact when ever asked to make a quote I use the one that after something went wrong the sherriff says, "I'm too old to cry, so I think I'll get drunk"
Best line I ever read.

Hello Karen,

I don't know if you have looked recently on the site www.tumbleweeds.com, but I
check it almost every day (just did) and they place new (old) strips every
several days. As a matter of fact today I saw a new set: 2x 3 dailys and 1
sunday. I copy them everytime on my computer.
By the way: I've had contact with mr. Ryan recently for the Tumbleweeds-book I
am working on for publication in the end of this year and he just send me the
design for the cover. So, in spite of his age (85) he is still (a little)
working with Tumbleweeds.

Are we looking at the same web site? The one I am seeing (at
http://www.tumbleweeds.com/oldies.html
) has had the same "moldy golden oldie" Sunday one for the past few months
now... the one with the single cow stampede....

Ok, I'm familiar with it- and, in fact, the link I posted earlier was the one
right to the "moldy oldies" page. That's the one I was looking for the old
Sunday comics in- since it's in color. I guess I hadn't looked at the black and
white sunday page, since most of those were in the time period I either got the
paper at home from Arizona (to Wisconsin, mind you), or finally got on line to
see them as they came each day there. It's the older ones, the moldy oldies
ones, that I never saw before. If you ever talk to Mr Ryan again, please tell
him first of all how much I (and so many others) miss the exploits of the Gulch
group, but how many of us missed out reading the moldy oldies the first time,
and are waiting eagerly for each new posting from those....
Thanks.

Hi Group,

I found my Grimy Gulch Honorary Citizenship certificate.

I posted a scan of it in the photo section along with the ad for it. If you put

I heard of a cartoon based on TUMBLEWEEDS, but never saw an example of it.
Someone posted a short segment of it here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5Z4O17xG8E

I must admit I like the way it looks on paper and "sounds in my head" a lot
better... for one thing, T.K. Ryan's humor aimed considerably higher (and
sometimes at the same time, lower) than this sort of animation did.

Ugh,

Oh, yeah, *this*. It's from "The Fabulous Funnies", which was this Saturday
morning thing during the age when everything had to have an important lesson.
Most shows, they tacked 'em on at the end, but for "Funnies" the whole show
was about 'em, to the detriment of any subtlety or actual humor. It was done
by Filmation, who were all over Saturday Morning in the late 70's, sad to say.
I haven't heard from them in decades, but they used the exact same sound
effects and incidential music in every cartoon ever to the point that I will
never get them out of my head.

That was funny.  I finally got to hear the voice of Tumbleweeds.  I would have liked to hear the other characters, too.  Especially Lotsa Luck, though it would be rather trivial since he either would (1) use sign language (2) scribble some notes or (3) talk.  :-)

Wonder who's idea it was to make Tumbleweeds sound like a bad Jimmy Stewart

When, clearly, Jimmy Stewart was,in fact, a bad imitation of Tumbleweeds.

Wonder who's idea it was to make Tumbleweeds sound like a bad Jimmy Stewart impersonation.

Tim,
I apologize for the problem. My e-mail was "hacked" and I couldn't see who had
been spammed before it was caught and stopped. I believe the problem has been
corrected.

Thanks,

Dennis

To all members,

To let you know I am still working on the book of "Tumbleweeds RAW".

I've add a folder in 'Files' with the cover-design (made by Tom K. Ryan) and the
result (made by me) for the book of "Tumbleweeds RAW", which I hope to have
ready at the end of this year.

Sincerely,

Theo

I figured it was something like that. Let me know when you get it cleaned up and
change your membership back.
