I usually save each chapter as a separate file.  It is a lot easier to work
with individual chapters.  I do keep another file with a summary and characters

You can do it either way, but when you send it to a
publisher it should be in one file.I have one chapter to a file, and
when I am ready to send the manuscript to my editor I put it all in
one file with "complete" in the file name. That way I know it's the
final version.

Back in the day, when I used my beloved WordPerfect, I used the Master
Document feature. I could save each chapter separately and then compile
them into a Master Document that would open all the chapter files as one
big file. That way, I could fiddle with one bit or I could do a
read-through. I've never gotten the hang of MS Word's comparable
feature, if there is one.

Now, I just let it all run together and keep a chapter-by-chapter
outline to help me keep track of what happens where.

Hope this helps!

On my blog, http://marianallen.wordpress.com, I posted a picture of the
costume I wore to a signing this weekend. Many people liked it, but
nobody knew what it was. If you think you know
what it is, post a comment. Anyone who guesses correctly today--10-26-09--
(comments are dated) will have his or her name put into a drawing five
times. Tomorrow, I'll post a detail of the costume and anyone who
guesses correctly on that day gets four chances. The next day, another
detail and correct guesses win three chances. Another day, another
detail. On October 31, a winner will be drawn from any correct guesses.
If there are no correct guesses, I'll put all INCORRECT guesses into a
drawing. The winner gets a copy of DYING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND
<http://wolfmont.com/tgom/tgom.html>, Wolfmont's 2009 Toys For Tots

Because of the delay in getting the flyers mailed, the deadline for the contest
has been extended to August 31. This may mean that winners will not be
announced until the end of September rather than the original date of 9/15.

Thank you to all who have already submitted entries to the contest. And for
those of you who wanted to but couldn't get things in the mail in time . . . you
now have a few more weeks! Link to the information is:

Subject: Luncheon of the Boating Party, deadlines, prizes, and a new lottery

Dear Friends,

Please join us for tomorrow's book discussion on novelist Susan Vreeland,
who will teach a fiction workshop at the Kentucky Women Writers Conference
in September:

Friday, July 10, 12 noon, on SUSAN VREELAND. Renee Boss leads a discussion
of the newest novel by New York Times best-selling author Susan Vreeland,
Luncheon of the Boating Party, set in Renoir's 1880s Paris. You need not
have read the book to enjoy participating. Boss is a Writing Consultant for
the Kentucky Department of Education. At the Carnegie Center, 251 W. Second
Street, tel 254-4175.

Hard to believe, but our conference is just two months away! The complete
itinerary is now available:[http://www.uky.edu/wwk/itinerary.html]. Most
sessions have no enrollment limit, but the small-group writing workshops are
limited to 12 participants each, and all six still have a few openings at
this time. Two-day registration is required for workshops, and July 31 is
the last day to receive the early discount of $140. Beginning August 1,
two-day registration will be $160. Student rates remain $25.

We are excited to announce that Conference presenter Jenny Bent, a NYC
literary agent, has agreed to meet individually with a small number of
registrants to review a manuscript in progress. For more details and to
enter a lottery for this opportunity, complete this form
[http://www.uky.edu/WWK/manuscript_consultation.html].

July 31 is also the last day to enter the Betty Gabehart Prize in poetry,
fiction, and nonfiction. Guidelines and entry forms are available on our web
site: [http://www.uky.edu/wwk/prizes.html]

Please help spread the word about the Kentucky Women Writers Conference by
forwarding this announcement to your departmental and work listservs. If you
plan to attend, chat about us on your Facebook page and Twitter.

Hello Friends! Anyone have any thoughs on where in Louisville, KY I might have
some luck getting a non-fiction article on our Neighborhood Watch Program? I am
told the article is well written, I am just getting nowhere with the local paper
and other popular publications. Starting to get discouraged.

Here's a link to the archived version of the interview. It begins about 35
minutes into the program, right after the interview about migraines.

For Louisville area friends, I'm being interviewed by Robin Fisher about my
latest book, Nothing Like An Ocean, on Studio 619, 89.3 WFPL, this Sunday (6/14)
at 10:00am. Available online, too, I think.

   Hello all!

I am pulling together the final details for the 2009 Green River Writers
Contest and am looking for sponsors for categories including youth
categories. If you are interested in sponsoring a category, please let me
   know.

   What is sponsoring?
Sponsoring means that you underwrite the prize money for the category as
   well as define the parameters. You determine if it is poetry or prose;
rhyming or non-fiction; long or short; whatever. Sponsors are typically also
judges, but do not have to be.

   The schedule is as follows:

. Confirmation of intent to participate: 3/31/2009

. Sponsorship money due by: 6/30/2009

. Contest details posted on website by: 4/15/2009

. Contest flyer mailed by: 4/24/2009

   . Contest deadline: 6/30/2009

. Contest entries to judges by: 7/31/2009

. Contest results due to me by: 8/31/2009

. Results posted and checks mailed by: 9/30/2009

If we have sponsorship for youth categories, the following additional
   deadlines will be added:

. Details included in regular contest flyer mailed 4/24/2009

   . Postcard mailed by: 8/31/2009

   . Youth categories deadline: 10/31/2009

. Youth contest entries to judges by: 11/16/2009

. Youth contest results due to me by: 12/4/2009

. Results posted and checks mailed by: 12/15/2009

You can contact me in any of the following ways:
