To everyone,
The Greatland Chapter web site has been updated to include photos
from last weekend's Handlers Clinic and Tests. You can find a few on
the home page along with a link to the "August Test" page where
we've posted a large number of photos and a summary of the
activities for the long weekend.
Please send more digital photos if you have them, and let me know
if there are any errors in the descriptions of the events or the
photo captions. I make the changes as quickly as I get them.
I am particularly interested in any personal accounts of your
experience during the event. Those make good reading for other
members who believe their training challenges are somehow unique.
If you are like me, you have already been out in the field to see
if your dogs perform the same way they did in the test. Let the rest
of us know if that is the case, and what you might be doing to deal
with whatever inconsistentcies you have encountered.
    Thanks,
       Roger

This can be much easier!!

Now that people more experienced than I, have seen Placer I am wondering just when to start training on the table. I will soon be working only three days a week. Sept 1 is 15 days away. I do plan to take her out often. I hope we can shoot a couple birds over a good point.
Just a quick note while banking and getting kids ready for bed, school has started today so bedtime is NOT sunset! LOL

Hi List members,
Well this should be a really good way to communicate! I spoke with
Rita Brenner (Greatland member) today, she has a 5 month old
drahthaar, lives in Anchorage, and she's interested in finding other
people to train with in the Anchorage area. She was out of town last
weekend so she missed the Handler Clinic and Test.

I went to the Cook Inlet Kennel Club meeting tonite to inquire about
the use of their building for a winter Gun Dog training class. They
are looking to rent a new building near Trunk road which would be
better since the building they rent now is in Big Lake. They will
charge clubs 20.00 a hour for the use of the building. Is anyone
interested in starting a Gun Dog obedience class in November?
Possibly in Anchorage? Any chance we could have a fun pheasant shoot
at Gary's this fall?

Okay, a little longer note. Two nights ago, I had Placer out for a run, she found a couple grouse and a lovely pond to get wet and mucky. About an hour after our run, I called her in to the van to go home. She wouldn't come, she took off!! She's never done that before! I knew she would start eventually. I just started up the van and started to drive slowly out of the gravel pit. (Gravel pits here always have great trails, good grouse cover and small ponds in the back). She came out of the bush and then came when I called her.

Now I'm wondering if some formal training is in order. Perhaps some heel work and a SLOW start to FF. Just work on the hold for now. Obviously some formalized work on "come" with the new whistle Jenny gave me, thank you again Jenny. I don't think I want to introduce the e-collar yet. I feel Placer is still too young for that and I don't feel confident of myself yet either. I would like to see a couple training videos and some specifically on e-collar training before I take the plunge. As a sometime auto mechanic, I feel a lot better if a tool is in the tool box and never needed than needing it and not having it. Makes for a multi-thousand dollar tool chest but they ARE fun toys. LOL But using it properly is very important.

Placer has started to really attack the water. She'll jump right in then spin around and try to bite the splashes she makes. It appears as though the wonderful Alaskan weekend has really boosted her confidence, now I need to keep it biddable confidence without fostering dependence, a lovely small line to walk. I think, for myself, I would prefer to keep her cooperation high over anything else. A slow, low pressure curriculum with a lot of bonding may be the ticket?

Good luck all and a very heartfelt congratulations to all Utility prizes, and Michael, that dog is perfect no matter what he does in front of strangers. I wish I could've seen how its supposed to be done. I hope your breed test goes outstanding Jenny. Jeff and Judy, think about the Invitational, a northern upstart is just what they need down there. I sometimes dream of having my pup that high but I will be very happy to have a lot of bird to eat and help a few people find their lost moose. A dog great with kids, protective of the house and dribbles the water all over the floor is just what I always wanted, I just didn't know I needed it.

Again Jenny, thank you for having us during a stressful time and give me warning if and when you're coming over. I had given some moose to a couple friends last year and I believe they still have some, I'll grab some for a few dinners.

Jen:
What you have experienced with Placer we experienced with darling Ouzel at
12 to 14 weeks. As a matter of fact we have had continual problems with
Ouzel wanting to get in the car -- out of the car, and with the command
come. The day before we came to the test, she ran away from Bruce in the
marina parking lot right as he stooped down to pick her up to put her into
the kennel. She was gone for 10 minutes. he was very upset, and I heard a
lot of " a lab would never do that."

You all don't know this, but we are really fortunate Ouzel did as well as
she did at the test, because I've heard a lot of "a lab would never do
that" these past ten weeks. It's been a huge adjustment for Bruce to go
from 20 years of field trial labs to a new animal all together.
Thankfully, she is slowly working her way into his heart and his level of
respect.

That said.

I am working with a check cord. I put it on her and let her drag it around
in the yard before we take our morning hikes, which involve a car ride.
Then I call come, toot the whistle, and if she just looks at me (which
happens 50 % of the time) I lead her in. We are now hiking trailing the
check cord, and I frequently blow the whistle for sit (we have chosen to
teach sit) and I also call her to come. I am working on the check cord when
she retrieves dummies in the field, because she has been refusing to bring
the dummy back to us. We are seeing some improvement.

ouzel is smart and talented and very extroverted and SUPER confident. We
have our hands and our brains full.yesterday she cracked us up by grabbing
her lead, running up onto the whoah table and standing at a perfect whoah!
All by herself without a command. yes, we've got a lot to do to stay ahead
with this one.

have you tried the check cord?

when she's 100 yards out. I still want her to get out there and learn
how to pin those birds. That night she did something that gives me hope.
A grouse was stirring in the bush next to the trail we were walking.
Placer ran hard down the trail then jumped into the bush so that the
bird was between me and Placer. She pushed the bird into me then pointed
until it busted. She should figure out sometime just how much pressure
she can put on a bird; I can't teach her that. I only want to shoot a
bird when she handles it well. If I only get 5 birds this season, its 2
more than I had last year.
I guess I'll have to put the CC on her 10 minutes or so before we actually
head for the van and I'll keep a hold of it. I've just been worried about
real formal training making her too close and dependent.

Just had Jäger back on the check cord for the "come" command again.
seems like if you can't reenforce your command they pick up on it
quick! A few times on the cord then he is good for a week or two then
he gets lazy. I also found he is very responsive if I put a piece of
rope about a foot long on him. I would only do this where it can not
get hung up some where though. Well the hunt is on so I have to go!

Jen -- maybe the check cord work will tune her up, so that she will respond
better out. But, I am NO epxert.Perhaps some of the other members can give
you advice. Good luck, Sher

We had the same problem with Sadie, and we tried EVERYTHING. It got so that her
safety was at risk. One time she didn't come when she was running after a car,
another when she saw a moose .. so we finally went to a shock collar, but I must
emphasize that she is the type of dog that needed it, and we didn't get one
until she
was a year old. I don't know the recommended age is.
Other methods we heard, besides the checkcord, was to take a leash and cut it to
about a foot, so it's not dragging behind, but they still think they could be
corrected
with it. Now that didn't work for us either, but it was just something else one
of our
obedience trainers said has worked in the past.

If any of you experience a double post when you first post to this
list -- it happens on yahoo groups from time to time. We don't know
why, but it should stop shortly.

A double post is where you post a message and it shows up in duplicate
to the group.

Remember that back in the old days, the means of correcting a dog was by dusting it off with a shotshell loaded with rice and if it was too far off, birdshot was used.

Electronic collars are a vast improvement.

One professional trainer here starts with pups with a collars as soon as they can comfortably carry it. He's very gentle with it, but the dogs never learn the fun of running off to the tune of their frantic handler helplessly shouting "here, here."

Jen,
At this age, Placer will test you at frequent opportunities, just
like kids will. Not coming when called is probably the most common
form of adolescent defiance. The trick is to anticipate the
behavior, minimize the opportunities for her to disobey, and
reinforce the behavior you want to see.
It only takes one or two violations of the rule "Never give a dog
a command you aren't prepared to enforce" to make your dog look
forward to the fun of being called and chased.
I have found it most effective to look for the first slight
indications of hesitation by your dog to respond to a "come"
command, then set them up for retraining. If Bramble looks at me for
a couple of seconds before heading in my direction, I'll put him on
a 50-ft check cord and give him a good half dozen repetitions in
series. Whoa him, walk to the end of the CC, give him a "come"
command, correct him briskly with the CC if the response isn't
instantaneous, praise him, whoa him again, walk to the end of the
CC, repeat, repeat.
If he ever "runs big" I resist the urge to call him at all, or
maybe only once. I then either walk away until he follows or I find
a way to physically connect and then immediately launch into a
lesson with the CC.
The training techniques you mention are all useful and necessary,
but they may not directly address the issue of coming when called.
Heeling, force fetching and e-collars all have their place, and the
appropriate time and age for introduction can vary.
Pro trainers are all over the map with advice on how to use e-
collars (and whether to use them). Most will agree that the best use
of one is to reinforce a skill that has already been taught by other
means. Very few will advise using an e-collar to teach a new skill
(other than the e-collar manufacturers).
I doubt if there are any of us who haven't dealt with this
problem, so you are likely to get many other suggestions for dealing
with a consistently faithful pup who suddenly gives you a quick look
with one eyebrow raised, sees an opportunity and decides to head for
the hills.
    Best of luck,
      Roger

before! I knew she would start eventually. I just started up the van
and started to drive slowly out of the gravel pit. (Gravel pits here
always have great trails, good grouse cover and small ponds in the

Jenny gave me, thank you again Jenny. I don't think I want to
introduce the e-collar yet. I feel Placer is still too young for
that and I don't feel confident of myself yet either. I would like
to see a couple training videos and some specifically on e-collar
training before I take the plunge. As a sometime auto mechanic, I
feel a lot better if a tool is in the tool box and never needed than
needing it and not having it. Makes for a multi-thousand dollar tool
chest but they ARE fun toys. LOL But using it properly is very
important.
>

in then spin around and try to bite the splashes she makes. It
appears as though the wonderful Alaskan weekend has really boosted
her confidence, now I need to keep it biddable confidence without
fostering dependence, a lovely small line to walk. I think, for
myself, I would prefer to keep her cooperation high over anything
else. A slow, low pressure curriculum with a lot of bonding may be
the ticket?
>
> Good luck all and a very heartfelt congratulations to all Utility
prizes, and Michael, that dog is perfect no matter what he does in
front of strangers. I wish I could've seen how its supposed to be
done. I hope your breed test goes outstanding Jenny. Jeff and Judy,
think about the Invitational, a northern upstart is just what they
need down there. I sometimes dream of having my pup that high but I
will be very happy to have a lot of bird to eat and help a few
people find their lost moose. A dog great with kids, protective of
the house and dribbles the water all over the floor is just what I
always wanted, I just didn't know I needed it.
>

give me warning if and when you're coming over. I had given some
moose to a couple friends last year and I believe they still have
some, I'll grab some for a few dinners.

Jenny,
I would be VERY interested in a fun pheasant shoot, even several
of them, at Falcon Ridge. I was planning to do some on my own, but
it would be a lot better with several people and more than one dog.
Any thoughts on dates?
    Thanks,

Jen,
Placer is plenty old enough to start table training. Doing that
doesn't necessarily imply starting force fetching, but I certainly
would not hesitate to start working on "whoa", heeling on and off
the table, and sit-stay (if you choose to teach that).

She is 26 months now. She comes quite reliably, yesterday she was chasing ducks
and came immediately. But you need to use only the command "COME" not come
here, or anything else.

I also want to add, that we did try EVERYTHING first, and she was good at
coming, say
90% of the time, but we had enough instances with her that she needed that
additional reinforcement to ensure her safety. And I agree with Roger, that the
skill/
command should be introduced 1st without the e-collar collar. It shouldn't be
used
as a short-cut. And I want her to obey even if she doesn't have the e-collar on,
which
she is doing. (Ok, I'd better be quiet, because she will probably prove me
wrong!)

Easy limits on the silvers every day! Although I am shifting to hunting so I think last night was the last day of fishing for me this year........ok I might fish during the day in between hunts. I am heading out to camp to night for the opener tomorrow. I hope you all are getting out. I am still in MANIC mode till the snow flies so I'll talk to you next week let you know how I did!

Greetings Everybody,

Just wanted to express my interest in the dog training course and the pheasant
shoot. I also wanted to pick the groups brain for a good place to hunt
ptarmigan. I would really like to find some places nearby with out driving all
the way to Paxon. Any suggestions out there?

Jason,

Try the Petersville Road, at the far end near the mine, or Turnagain Pass just beyond the rest area at the top. Also, with enough people to fill a charter flight, you can find ptarmigan in lots of areas you can get to only by airplane where there is water and cover. Anyplace that is nearby and readily accessible by paved road gets hunted out quickly.

We'll let everyone know when we set up the pheasant shoot.

                   Roger

Greetings Everybody,

Just wanted to express my interest in the dog training course and the pheasant shoot.  I also wanted to pick the groups brain for a good place to hunt ptarmigan.  I would really like to find some places nearby with out driving all the way to Paxon.  Any suggestions out there?

Just had Jäger back on the check cord for the "come" command again.
seems like if you can't reenforce your command they pick up on it
quick! A few times on the cord then he is good for a week or two then
he gets lazy. I also found he is very responsive if I put a piece of
rope about a foot long on him. I would only do this where it can not
get hung up some where though. Well the hunt is on so I have to go!

I think a Gun Dog training class would be a great thing to do with the dogs during the winter-time if they were on the weekend.  I know that for me, living in Anchorage, it's rather hard to get home from work pack up the dogs and drive out toward Wasilla on a weekday evening.  I would definitely support it for a weekend session.

A couple of my thoughts on the proposed calendar/test schedule.

1. I'd like to see 2 tests -- but only if interest merits it. Otherwise a singe
August test
would be ideal. I do question whether a September test would generate as much
interest, due to school for those with kids and hunting season.

2. In terms of revenue, I think that the test fee could be raised. It obviously
costs a
bit more to run a test up here due to the cost for the judges and their
expenses. And
I would rather pay a bit more for the test that have to go outside, which would
be
much more expensive, given the costs of plane, lodging, food, rental car, etc.
etc. etc.
Plus the added stress on the dog. I do not know how the #s ended up, but it
will be
interesting to find out exactly how much the test cost per dog...

Hello -- Bruce and I also vote for an August test. We think in June the
water may be still cold, and September may be a bit late. If there were
two tests one in June and one in Aug/Sept, we'd come to the later one. We
are planning for UPT.
