Margaret,

I’ve checked your membership. There seems no reason why you can’t ‘get in’ to the group website. The fact that you have been able to send a message to the group would suggest you are ‘signed in’ correctly.

However, to confirm this go to the Group  homepage http://groups.yahoo.com/group/greatharwood/   Immediately above the green header bar your current status should be shown. If you are signed in, your name and email address will be shown there. If there is nothing, then at the very top of the page  there will be a link to ‘sign in’.  Click on the link and follow the prompts to sign in. You will need your correct Yahoo ID and password. Your ID according to the membership list is verity_margaret . Don’t forget the underscore _  . Only you have access to your password. Depending on what your password is, also check your caps lock  – ‘A’ is different to ‘a’ as far as the password is concerned.

Of course the problem may well have been caused by a temporary glitch at Yahoo. It is just as well  to wait a while and have another go before starting to alter a setup that has been working with no problem over the recent past.

Came across this site the other day. No one else has mentioned it so maybe you don’t know about it!

The site has a PDF type display of the actual pages of the printed Lancashire Telegraph. Clicking the Archive button takes you to last 20 issues or so. It is updated daily. At the moment there is free access, though on some of the other titles (mostly local papers from around the country) you have to either register and/or pay a subscription.

If Mrs Cornwell has returned to the homestead with tales of meeting strange men in the Co-op, it wasn’t me, it was Gareth.

For those who can make it there will be the Annual Carol Service around the Xmas tree on the Town Gate on Sunday 20th December at 8pm, organised by Great Harwood Civic Society. As usual the Salvation Army Band will provide the music and spiritual inspiration. We will start from Game Street car park and march down Blackburn Rd and then onto the Town Gate. After the singing everyone is invited back to the Pentecostal Church on Town Hall St for tea/coffee and biscuits. If the weather is bad (as last year) then we will go directly to the Pentecostal Church and sing inside.

John,

FWIW I noticed a similar problem after reading Margaret's post. I checked on the Group home page and it showed me as "signed in" but I was restricted in which areas I could access.

Problem solved by signing out then back in again. I've seen this before and think it is related to the way Yahoo allows you to remain signed-in for two weeks, then should ask for you to confirm your password.

In other words - don't rely on the fact that it shows you are signed-in with the correct name; if you are having problems just sign out then in again.

Thanks, Dorothy. I am distributing them as fast as I can churn them them at the moment, which is nice in itself, but proving more expensive than I thought as regards printing and binding materials. Really glad that my efforts are being appreciated - especially by overseas Arroders.

Regards . . . Derek.

So John,

You're checking for stuck vehicles are you?

Next time there's a stuck beer lorry let me know and I'll come and help you

But that's my point about the maps being updated - it's still user error,
whichever way you look at it. The SatNav doesn't "know" 'til it's updated,
in the meantime the driver has to be responsible for taking the route.

What's bizarre is that people will just follow them instead of thinking
"don't like the look of that" and letting it recalculate as soon as they
detour.

Blu Ray player for £80. No discs to play on it yet, but allegedly it
upscales old DVDs so even they look better than out of a regular DVD player.
Debbie doesn't know she's bought it for me, yet.

Looks like you need to update your satnav, Gareth. Just put my Tom Tom through its paces and using fastest and shortest route to Dunkenhalgh the instructions ignore Tottleworth and take you via Rishton centre.

Just had a thought – Christmas is nearly upon us and here we  blokes are – talking gadgets!!!

Anybody getting a good gadget for Christmas??

They don't need to. SatNavs don't make errors. They are only as good as the
customisable settings, and the abilities of their user. Accusing a SatNav of
making an error is a bit like blaming your calculator for adding thing up
incorrectly.

It's the idiots who think that a SatNav's word is gospel when they use it to
get from A to B, and that the device obviates their need to think when
driving, and that if they end up on an impassable road then the SatNav's
"error" gives them a get out clause.

Even an out-of-date map is no excuse - paper atlases are usually out of date
before they even hit the shelves, so the driver must think, even with those.
Most SatNavs will try to route you along Tottleworth Road when going from
(say) Towngate to the Dunk, because their built-in maps have no way of
knowing it is now blocked.

Bing.com knows. Google maps doesn't. Multimap uses bing for its mapping, but
it must have old maps, because it too tries to send you down the blocked
road, but to catch it out you have to demand the shortest route.

When I took my driving test, the examiner told me at one point to "take the
next available right". If I'd had the SatNav mentality, I'd have turned down
the next road, even though the sign said "no right turn" (of course, that's
what he was testing for).

I’d imagine a bus weighs a bit more than 7.5 tonnes !

I’m not sure how councils can be expected to put signs up to cater for all sat nav errors. Motorists are actually bombarded with more signs of assistance now than ever before, and I’d say that a weight restriction sign should be sufficient to warn of an unsuitable road, though it could be worded ‘Not suitable for vans, lorries or double decker buses’.

As for the potholes I’ve heard of councils leaving them in roads as alternatives to humps !

Does a double deck bus weigh more than 7.5 tons?   And who would fine him? Our roads are no longer policed.

In some ways Lancs County Council are remiss in not providing suitable signage on the approaches to roads which are subject to faulty sat nav  directions. They have been aware of the problem. Local residents, led by their local councillor, have long campaigned to have such signs erected. Perhaps it’s not policy to do things which assist the motorist, but only do things which will drive him out of the car onto nonexistent public transport. I understand that new humps  will form part of the current resurfacing work in the Edge End area – sort of swapping reverse humps (potholes) for positive humps!

I was only suggesting the bus driver had showed a degree of skill to get himself into trouble and then to extricate himself – backwards!!

Though I think getting stuck going UP Clinkham Road may well be a first.

Err, no – it wuz me.

Been checking my Tom Tom satnav and whatever destination I put in it won’t route me via Clinkham. I ‘forced’ it by selecting Belmont Farm Clinkham Road – bear in mind I can see the farm from our back window, it ‘took’ me done into town , then up via Blackburn Old Road to turn down Clinkham Road. The road displays with lilac dashed line. Presume this is some sort of warning that the road is a bit difficult.

Extremely embarrassing for the driver, but credit to him, he did well to turn the corner at the end of Edge end cottages. He got half way up the hill before losing traction in mud either side of the road. Even more credit to him for reversing back down the hill and negotiating the right angled turn, this time backwards!!

Moral: don’t believe all you see on the internet! (he got his route off Google)

Hey Allan , read about this problem ........one question ...know they are now 'classed' as the only wild camels in the world , but whats so difficult that they can't be rounded up/corraled and tranquilized ,then shipped out to Saudi for the annual Hajji animal slaughter/pilgrimage, at least the ones causing problems near townships and railheads,
Hope that the PETA looneys don't have much influence with you guys as they do here in California

Having previously corresponded with the publishers at length on the matter you
infer, I am assured that anecdotes and articles are published in accordance with
the number of contributions received. On that basis, the more 'Lancashire
Biased' articles submitted, then the more chance you will have of seeing them in
print. Can't argue with that.

a subcriber to the bi-monthly publication for over 2-years and can heartily
recommend it for it's coverage of all things 'northern'. There is a depiction
of a tongue in cheek painting representing the 'Clayton Street Chippie' by a
Great Harwood artist in the current December/January edition which can be
purchased at Boundary Mill, Colne for £1.50p - a snip at the price as it
includes a regular and comprehensive 'what's on' section.

They have now shifted from free distribution so it's either subscribe or spot a
copy when you are somewhere that sells it.

A few editions back they had an item about the painting "The Three Graces" that
was commented on in this group.

Derek, Please let me know the 'true' cost of the books----I'm more than happy to pay the extra ,  I'm sure everyone will also think this way --please don't be 'out of pocket' ----they are 'little gems' !!!!!!!!..............Best Wishes. Dorothy.

It's that time of year once again, and I would like to send 'Seasons Greetings' to all the group from Australia……….Dorothy.

Thanks, Dorothy. I am distributing them as fast as I can churn them them at the moment, which is nice in itself, but proving more expensive than I thought as regards printing and binding materials. Really glad that my efforts are being appreciated - especially by overseas Arroders.

Regards . . . Derek.
