I just ran across this board..all I can say
is
GOD BLESS YOU!!!! :) I'm a 24 year old
grad
student at Middle TN State University..working
on my
M.A. in English and currently going insane. :) I'm
also married and work 40+ hours per week
as a
retirement specialist. I stay busy. :)

Okay...I have
a question I have been dying to ask
other
graduate students (I'm not in what you would
call a
particularly close knit dept.--we primarily have our cliques
(those who work in the writing lab; those of us who (oh
horror!) must work in a 40 hr. week job to support
ourselves, etc.).

Okay..here's the deal... I started
out in the
history dept. at MTSU (giving in to
pressure from the parents). It was an unholy disaster. I
minored in history as an undergrad but ended up
with a
C and a B-. Now I'm in English (my major
as an
undergrad) and am doing much better, but my
overall GPA
sucks. I have been on academic probation--at MTSU if
your overall GPA drops below
a 3.0 at any given
time you're put on probation.
My GPA now is a
2.95--I may be get suspended over
that 1/10 of a point
(I'm only taking 1 graduate class per semester and
Spanish--with a 2 hour commute each day and a very high
pressure job that's about all I can handle).

My
question is this: in your opinion, is applying to a Ph.D
program basically totally, absolutely pointless? I'm
getting ready to study for the subject test but this
voice in the back of my head keeps asking me what the
point is--it seems unlikely that with my academic
record I would ever get accepted. Or am I being too
pessimistic?

PLEASE give me your honest opinion about this!
I have
been pretty much guranteed that my appeal will be
accepted and readmission granted for this summer if I am
suspended--but it will still be there on my transcript and
record. Do you think the fact the grades were in history
and not English will make a
difference?

Okay--I'm done rambling. Thank you!
I am actually studying for MAT Soc Sci at present
but it seems to me that the university where I am
enrolled does not sufficiently provided me the knowledge
satisfaction I desire. I hope somebody can give the idea where
I can avail for scholarship grants so that I can
continue my studies in a school with a high quality of
education. thanks in advance.
dear club members
I am a student in Ph.D
level in Economics and I am preparing my thesis. At
same time I am teaching in university as an
instructor.I would like to continue my stuy in an unversity of
U.S
or Canada.Would you please informe me about
take an fellowship(teaching or research) in these
uiversities.I have done many research about the issue of econoy
of Iran.
with best regard
nader
Greetings,

I am doing a Masters thesis in
history. Unfortunately, I was only able to find reprints
of primary sources. I have even gone through
interlibrary loan. I have no means of transpotation. What
should I do?
I just can't remember exactly how the algorithms
work so I had to make three mini-presentations just to
be equipped to answer those questions. On top of
that, I had to create some kind of graphical
explanation for my model since no one seems to get it but me
and my advisor. Ho hum... hours of work for a two
minute answer. The goo dnews is that the whole
presentation is done, finito, fin. I will probably have to
shorten it a bit, but that's no biggee really.

On
the bright side, I get to go shopping! Yippee! I have
lost so much weight that the pantsuit I'd planned on
wearing doesn't fit at all! So I have to go buy a new
outfit. It's like the sweet cookie they give you after
you've given blood! 'Bout time I get a reward for all
this work!

-k-
It is a good practice to do dry runs because you
catch all kinds of bloopers before they happen for
real. Don't spend too much time trying to figure out
who might ask what you will drive yourself crazy!!
The point is that you know your subject and you can
answer any question that comes at you! Review your cards
and know your stuff cold (like you already do) and
you will be in the clear.

Sam
Thanks Sam... it means alot to hear from
you!

I think I've got it "sewn" up as you say... but I
just did a dry run of my presentation and found some
majorly awkward holes in my talk and a screwed up graphic
or two. Oh well... good thing I stayed up until 4am
yesterday and got some things out of the way! So today's
setbacks aren't so grim. The other thing that's getting to
me is just how many potential questions could be
asked! Just looking at the monster stack of index cards
is frightening! Well back to work.... : )

-k-
K-
Trust me I would have found a way to be there for you if I had to email
you 10 times a day. You have this thing all sewn up and I am sure that you will
ROCK!!!

Sam
Hey Tom!

I think I'll live through it...
but this glitch sure makes me appreciate the board
all the more. I didn't realize how dependent I'd
become on everyone for advice!

Good luck with
MediaOne tomorrow... no doubt they will remember your name
after you've regaled them with some choice words! Wish
I could be there! : )

-k-
Hi K!! I have also had a really rough time of it,
and not having Phinished there has nearly crushed me.
Even if I have been mostly lurking for the last month.
I have a big meeting with my advisor this coming
Friday. Maybe the buddy system will come in really handy
here. If you need ANYTHING at all, please feel free to
email me (pflores4@...). We will BOTH get through
this!

By the way, congrats on Florida! I saw the message
while I was in California on vacation. Good for you
that you could come to a resolution. Since coming back
from Cali, I have had much to consider myself about
PhD programs. I have pretty much decided not to even
look at East Coast schools. My husband and I have been
soooo unhappy in NYC, we have decided to go back to CA.
I'm just not sure how my advisor will look at this
seemingly rash decision. All of the top art history
programs are on the east coast. But, I have been so
depressed since I returned, I think it is pretty clear what
I need to do to continue.

So, please keep
us posted on the defense progress! And email me if
you need anything.

Shine on, Patricia
Hi Kharyssa,

I'm really sorry about the
problem with PhinisheD. I know this comes at the absolute
worst time for you! I just wanted to post a message to
say hang in there, have a great week, and rest
assured that I will be kickin' butts and takin' names at
MediaOne tomorrow morning in an effort to get PhinisheD
back online as soon as possible. I hope all your
preparations over the next few days go well. Take
care!

-Tom
Since the board will be down until next week, I
figured we could all hang out here for a while! With my
defense on Friday, I really the need the support right
now... and couldn't get through the week without you
guys!
Doctoral student, working full time
administrative position, plus family responsibilities. Anyone
know a good therapist??? Just kidding...but it is
stressful. Misery loves company, right? That's why I am
here. How about you? Making progress? I hope to hear.
Please post. Thanks.
Dave
OK spring was up again for like, 2 minutes! I am really started to get
aggravated with them!

Maybe all the Phinishers crashed the system trying
to log on?

-k-
hey Anita!

Spring is back up! Yay!

The thesis binder stuff is
under one of those dang folders! I posted it 2 days ago. ; )

That new
format is so hard to get used to!
Hi Anita! Glad you made it over.... yahoo *is* a
bit of a pain but the format is great. Did you notice
the calendar? We can enter in important dates for
ourselves to shae -- that way we'll all know when each
others drafts are due, comps, defense, etc. And the chat
function is really cool!

-k-
Hi everyone... in times of desperation we turn to
desperate measures.

For those of you having
Phinished withdrawal, we can camp out here rather than
wallowing alone.

Note all the neato features to the
left -- anyone can post in those topic areas, so feel
free to add stuff!

-k-
Hi! Kharyssa (the founder) here. Just a few words
so new subscribers know who I am.

I am a 4th
year grad student at the University of Colorado at
Denver studying Archaeology. I am currently in the data
collection stage of my thesis. I have already tackled the
theory, methods, and history portions of my thesis --
though they are in an extremely rough form! My goal is
to finish the first draft (albeit very rough) of my
thesis by the end of the summer.

Our department
is very small and mostly disconnected from the rest
of the University. We do not have a grad club, nor
do we have an established resource center for grad
information/thesis help. Also, I have found that faculty are usually
very ambiguous about the thesis process. And even more
ambiguous about defense (we have a closed defense at UCD).
I am hoping that this forum will bring together
lots of folks in different disciplines from different
schools who are going through the thesis process. The
goal is to help each other, listen to problems, offer
constructive solutions, and share good and bad experiences
with every facet of thesis research and defense.

So welcome to the club... and I hope to hear from
you soon!

-kharyssa-
