Hi,

I just visited the library today and
saw an early Nathan Godwin in Edgefield, SC in deed
records. Seems like the timeframe was early 1800's which
is probably too soon for your Nathan.

Lori

y entry into the Godwin family was via the
marriage of Samuel Branton to Pency Ann Godwin , daughter
of David Godwin and Phyllis (?) born in Bladen Co.
NC abt 1807. From other Godwin Researchers , David
Godwin was the son of David Godwin (killed in 1781 ) and
Catherine Ann Pearce . He was reported to be the son of
William Godwin of Edgecombe Co. NC and Tabitha Rae.
Catherine Pearce, b.1761, was the daughter of Richard
Pierce and Sarae Averitte. William Godwin may be the son
of James Godwin b.1697 (where?) and Mary Parker.
Source documentation earlier than Pency and her father
David becomes both increasingly thinner and less
conclusive. The logical sequence and timing is there , but
with the propensity of the Godwins to recycle given
names, there is always a lingering possibility of
another branch. And connections of this branch to a first
arrival in America remains an elusive link in spite of a
very active and informative Godwin-L. Any corrections,
additions, or sources on the David and earlier would be most
helpful and appreciated.
Dick Branton
he new Hertford County, NC Mail List is up and running. Those of you with an
interest in the early Godwins in North Carolina might consider joining this new
resource. The link is posted.
