I am searching for information on my great great grandmother, Martha
Godwin. I would like to know if she is a member of your family tree?
Martha Godwin's daughter, my great grandmother was was
Rosa Godwin (married name was Boone). She was from
the Ahoskie, Hertford County area of North Carolina.
Her father was a free black man who I've heard was
named Joel Holloman. Her mother, (my great, great grand
mother) was a white woman named Martha Godwin. I don't
believe they ever married.
My family knows very little about Martha Godwin,
except she had a brother named James Godwin and 3
biracial children: John Godwin, Rosa Godwin, and Benjamin
Godwin. I'm not certain what year she was born -- I'm
guessing somewhere between 1830 and and 1847. My
family does not really know what happened to John
Godwin. He was extremely fair-skinned and suspect
that he may have lived his adult life as a white man.
He did have one child named Lawrence Godwin, who was
raised by my great grandmother Rosa Godwin Boone.
I was told that my great grandmother, Rosa Godwin
Boone was born around 1879 and died around 1965 and
eventually married a man named James Boone. Ben
Godwin was born around 1864 and died around 1972. I
believe all were born in Hertford County, North Carolina.
I also heard that Martha and/James Godwin helped my
great grandmother, Rosa Godwin Boone and her husband
to build their first home and were given around 20
acres of land by them.
Can you tell me if my great great grandmother, Martha
Godwin, was a member of your family tree? Do you know anything about
Joel Holloman as well?
Thank you.
Sincerely,
James C. Hunter
