       November5th-7th

One participant wrote after the retreat: "Thank you so much for organizing the interfaith encounter at the Everest Hotel, November 5th-7th.
It was a stimulating and exciting experience for me, and all the participants clearly felt likewise.  It was a unique opportunity to bond with Palestinians across the national and religious "divide", and to learn about one another's respective traditions and culture.  Above all, it was a very significant reminder of the plain fact that we are all individuals, with similar hopes, dreams and concerns."

What actually happen at there retreat?

In the afternoon of November 5th we opened the 27th Israeli-Palestinian retreat of interfaith encounter.  It was again a joint retreat of the Interfaith Encounter Association and the Hope Flowers School, sponsored by Canada's Networking for Peace program - to whom we are deeply grateful.

We began by briefly introducing the two organizations and their activities, followed by introduction of the agenda for the retreat and its guiding principles.  Then participants went into small conversation groups for a session of self-introduction.  They first shared their life story and then they each shared with each other elements of the story of Joseph that inspire or move them.

After dinner we enjoyed a social evening with Palestinian flavor of the Oud and singing, followed by relaxed conversations into the night.

The morning of the second day began with the Jewish perspective.  Unfortunately, Nachum - who was planned to deliver the Jewish presentation - could not come in the last minute so Yehuda replaced him.  He presented the Biblical story from Genesis about Joseph being the son of Jacob's beloved wife, being favored etc.

As usual, after each of the presentations the conversation continued in the small groups.

After the Muslims returned from the Jumaa prayer, Yasser presented the Koranic story, which is nearly identical to the Biblical one.  There are, though, a few interesting differences between the stories.  According to the Koran Jacob suspected that the brothers plan to harm Joseph and did not agree he will go with them to the field until they swore to him that they will bring him back safely.  Later - Joseph refused to go out of prison until it was proven that he was innocent.  Joseph revealed himself to Benjamin already when they were together for the first time, but asked him to keep it secret.  The brothers did return without Benjamin but after Jacob became blind out of sorrow - they went back to ask Joseph to release Benjamin.  Then Joseph revealed to them, they apologized and he gave them his shirt to put on Jacob's face in order to cure him.

Before sunset we all gathered for a prayers session.  The Jewish participants gave a short explanation about the special prayer for the receiving of Shabbat and performed it with a lot of singing, Karlebach style.  Then the Muslim participants explained the Muslim prayers and their preparations and performed the evening prayer.  The conversations around prayers continued for some time.  Then Chana shared a story, coming from the Jews of Afghanistan, about the search for justice, followed by personal reflections of participants.

Dinner was followed by relaxed informal conversations through the evening, which continued on Saturday with some of the Palestinians who returned to visit the Jews who stayed in the Everest Hotel until the end of Shabbat.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Humanity,

Hope all is well!

Happy Thanksgiving and Eid Mubarak.

Today (Thu Nov 26, 2009), we celebrate the Day of Thanksgiving with our friends, families, and all Americans.  As we gather over a delicious family turkey dinner and count our blessings, let us also remember those of us who are less fortunate, and pray that the Almighty God will bless them too and help us continue to propagate PEACE, RESPECT, LOVE, and HARMONY.  Yesterday, we  from the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Community were honored to participate in an Interfaith Thanksgiving Service at the United Christian Parish in Reston.  In addition, a few weeks ago we were honored to participate in a Loundoun Interfaith Bridges Thanksgiving Event in Leesburg.

Tomorrow (Fri Nov 27, 2009), 1.5 Billion Muslims all over the world will celebrate the Eid Al-Adha to honor and remember the devotion of Prophet Abraham when he was ordered by God to sacrifice his son;  God saved the son and replaced him, at the last minute, with a lamb.  We gather to eat lamb with our families and friends and we give 1/3 of it to those who are in need.   Eid Al-Adha coincides with the Hajj (Pilgrimage) where 3 Million Muslims from around the world gather in Makkah (Mecca).  The All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) will hold 25 Eid Prayers at Six Locations (Lansdowne, Reston, Fairfax, Tysons, Herndon) throughout Northern Virginia serving over 15,000 Muslims.  In addition, we will have a festival with moonbounces, cotton candy, popcorn, food, balloons, face painting, and a bazaar.  May we all walk in the foosteps of Prophet Abraham and make commitments for the good of humanity and to please God,.

Please Remember to Help Others in Community Service and Creating Harmony and here are some ways we all can help:

1) Please donate online to support Fort Hood Families

http://www.forthoodfamilyfund.org/

The Fort Hood Family Fund is a project initiated by local and national Muslim-American organizations, in partnership with established charitable entities serving veterans of the US armed forces and in concert with a variety of community and religious organizations.  The Fort Hood Family Fund was created as a result of an outpouring of support from American Muslim community, including those living near Fort Hood as well as veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States.  By establishing the fund we are hoping to tap into the considerable goodwill of all Americans.  The Fund has in a few short days achieved considerable momentum that we hope will assist in a healing of the wounds, both physical and mental, in people we do not know but to whom we have a commitment to help.

2) Please donate online to support the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington

http://www.ifcmw.org

The InterFaith Conference celebration its 30th Anniversary,  engages 11 historic faith communities in the national capital region to advance justice, build community and nurture understanding.  Its members are the Baha'i, Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, Jain, Jewish, Latter-day Saints, Protestant, Roman Catholic, Sikh and Zoroastrian traditions here.

3) Please donate online to support Reston Interfaith Shelter and Food Pantry

http://www.restoninterfaith.org

Reston Interfaith is a leading service provider offering comprehensive programs for 13,000 people in Reston, Herndon and northwest Fairfax County.  We are recognized as a regional voice for the nonprofit sector and advocate with those we serve to promote social change.

4) Please donate online to support Loudoun Interfaith Relief

http://www.interfaithrelief.org/

The mission of Loudoun Interfaith Relief, Inc., is simple, yet critically important to the lives of thousands of residents in Loudoun County: feed the hungry by providing emergency food assistance to those in need to any person or family living in Loudoun County.

5) Please donate online to support Capital Area Food Bank

http://www.capitalareafoodbank.org/

Founded in 1980 on Martin Luther King Jr's birthday, Capital Area Food Bank is the largest, nonprofit hunger and nutrition education resource in the Washington Metropolitan area.  Since that time, we have made tremendous strides to expand our services and annually distribute 23 million pounds of food to more than 383,000 people through our invaluable network of partner agencies.  We are committed to uplifting those in need, providing the best services possible and helping those who are without the means to help themselves.

PEACE,

Rizwan

Rumi Forum Welcomes New President

www.rumiforum.org/48802FB4.jpg
In early September of this year the Rumi Forum welcomed its                                     new president, Emre Celik. Hailed from the land down under,                                     Mr. Celik is an Aussie native with Turkish roots.

Mr Celik was born in Izmir, Turkey while his family was                                 visiting Turkey from Australia. Mr. Celik received a degree                                     in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of                                  Technology, Sydney and then went on to receive a Masters                                        Degree in Teaching from the Charles Darwin University of                                        Australia.

Mr. Celik's involvement in community affairs encouraged him                                     to leave the field of engineering, becoming greatly involved                                    in educational and intercultural projects in the Australian                                     cities of Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

In 1996, Mr. Celik served on the Executive Committee that                                       established the first private college founded by the                                    Australian Turkish community. He has since worked on                                    numerous educational and community projects during his time                                     in the 3 eastern states of Australia.

Before arriving in the U.S., Mr. Celik was the General                                  Coordinator of the Australian Intercultural Society. AIS is                                     a non-profit, community based organization that is committed                                    to bringing together people of different backgrounds to help                                    improve understanding and respect and to build greater                                  community harmony. Since its founding in 2000, AIS has been                                     involved in many bridge building events that help to                                    overcome ignorance and prejudice. Amongst numerous other                                        projects, AIS established the first ever Fethullah Gulen                                        Chair at the Australian Catholic University. During his                                 tenure as General Coordinator, Mr. Celik was involved in two                                    ground breaking projects that brought together the Muslim                                       and Jewish communities of Melbourne, Building Bridges and                                       Embracing Youth, both sponsored by the Australian                                       government's Living in Harmony initiative. He also served as                                    a member of the Victoria Police Multi-Faith Council and was                                     involved in the preparation of the 2009 Parliament of World                                     Religions to be held in Melbourne.

Mr. Celik has spoken extensively on issues on peaceful                                  co-existence and intercultural dialogue and spoke at an                                 international conference in Oklahoma on the Contributions of                                    Australian Muslims to Dialogue

Since arriving in Washington, Mr. Celik has been busy                                   getting to know the Washington community at various events                                      and programs, namely the 2009 RUMI Peace and Dialogue Awards                                    held at Congress. He has also been traveling extensively                                        throughout the U.S., speaking to audiences about the                                    important work conducted by the Rumi Forum, specifically the                                    importance of bringing people and ideas together through                                        dialogue.

Gulen Conference at UMD

www.rumiforum.org/4429C7B0.jpg
The Rumi Forum of Maryland held the conference, Preventing                                      Violence and Achieving World Peace: The Contributions of the Gulen Movement, this October 29, 2009 at the University of                                 Maryland, College Park. The conference is co-sponsored by                                       Dept. of Anthropology ,The Rumi Club, Graduate Student                                  Government at the University of Maryland, College Park.                                 Several distinguished speakers including former ambassador,                                     US State Department official, academicians talked about the                                     contributions of the Gulen Movement to the World Peace.

The conference opened with a keynote speech by Dr. Ori Z.                                       Soltes from Georgetown University, titled, "Socrates,                                   Violence, Education, the Gulen Movement, and Peace". This                                       talk compared Socrates' aims to those of the Gulen Movement.                                    Dr. Soltes noted that like Gulen, Socrates emphasized                                   importance of ethics and the process of dialogue for brining                                    morality into all facets of life. Gulen emphasizes that                                 education is the ultimate means through which we can deduce                                     Divine will and thus improve the world. He noted that unlike                                    Socrates, the Gulen Movement has been able to put Gulen's                                       ideas into action through its varied educational programs,                                      media, cable, and internet programming. Moreover, the Gulen                                     movement seeks peace through constant effort and struggle,                                      and this is a "fullness of peace" that not merely tolerates,                                    but embraces diversity, and it cannot be described as merely                                    the absence of war.

The conference featured two panels, one titled "Preventing                                      Violence and Achieving World Peace" and the other, "The                                 Contributions of the Gulen Movement to World Peace." Dr.                                        John Davies from University of Maryland, College Park opened                                    the first panel by sharing findings from a comprehensive                                        research program that has identified societal factors which                                     strongly correlate with the likelihood or absence of                                    violence and wars within and among nations. The single best                                     indicator of a nation-state's likelihood of creating a                                  climate for war is the Infant Mortality Rate. Peter Kovach,                                     from the U.S. Department of State said that Rumi Forum in                                       Washington DC and Pacifica Institute at Los Angeles are one                                     of the most effective peace organizations that build bridges                                    between people from diverse backgrounds. Kovach shared with                                     the audience the Department of State's recent success in                                        collaboration with the Egyptian delegation in resolving                                 issues stemming from the Organization of Islamic Conference                                     regarding defamation of religions. Kovach presented the                                 issue as a free speech issue, noting that "One man's truth                                      is another's defamation," and that suppressing ideas never                                      succeeds in making them go away. Ambassador David Newton                                        shared his experience with Radio Free Iraq. He noted that                                       the internet has weakened control of authoritarian regimes;                                     they can no longer totally dominate the media. He stated                                        that the media is an empty vessel, and it can be filled with                                    tolerance or intolerance and incite violence or peace. Dr.                                      Imad-ad Dean Ahmad of the Minaret of Freedom Institute                                  wrapped up the session by emphasizing the critical                                      importance of education (as opposed to merely schooling) for                                    fomenting tolerance and peace. He observed that historically                                    Muslims went to madrasses to learn and understand the Qu'ran                                    (education). Today, madrasses teach memorization and correct                                    pronunciation (schooling). We need to move more towards                                 being educated about other cultures and about ways of                                   thinking in order to achieve greater tolerance.

The second panel shifted focus to a more complete                                       understanding of how the Gulen movement conceptualizes peace                                    and ways to achieve it. Dr Eileen Eppig of the College of                                       Notre Dame identified how Gulen's ideas regarding peace are                                     inspired by Sufism and the Holy Qu'ran. Human beings are                                        God's highest level of creation and He manifests His                                    qualities, His "names" through His creations. When we                                   recognize God's love within ourselves, then we can see it in                                    others and all of creation. This recognition brings about                                       actions that respect God's love in all of His creations and                                     leads to a state of compassion. Dr. Heon C. Kim of Temple                                       University continued with Dr. Eppig's themes by emphasizing                                     the Islamic perspective that places the highest value on                                        humanity, as opposed to fundamentalist beliefs which tend to                                    devalue humanity. Kim demonstrated that dialogic humanism is                                    the heart of Gulen's thought and gives the reason for the                                       existence of the Gulen movement - hizmet, service to                                    humanity as a solution to individual and collective                                     problems. Dr. William Taft Stuart of the University of                                  Maryland, College Park discussed the social capital that the                                    Gulen Movement brings to peace building, including its                                  educational activities, forum activities, and media outlets,                                    especially Zaman Newspaper. Dr. Pim Valkenberg was                                      positioned excellently as the final speaker. He emphasized                                      how the notion of peace is connected to religion. He stated                                     that Gulen's notion of peace is based on an analysis of                                 three roots of violence - ignorance, disunity, and poverty.                                     The Gulen movement activities address these three areas                                 through its schools, dialogue groups, and charity                                       organizations, such as Kimse Yok Mu. According to Gulen, for                                    a Muslim, peace cannot be separated from religion as a                                  Muslim desires, in his or her daily life to be at peace with                                    all of creation. For Gulen, it is not enough that Muslims                                       should feel safe, but that all humanity should feel safe.                                       Since passages of violence and peace can be found in all                                        fundamental scriptures (e.g. Judaic, Christian, Muslim),                                        what is important is the mindset that interprets the                                    scripture. Since Islam values peace above violence, then                                        peace is the key to understanding the Qu'ran. If we believe                                     that peace is better than violence, then we must be on the                                      side of peace. From this viewpoint, violence in religious                                       texts are interpreted as corresponding to specific                                      circumstances, and cannot be seen as a fundamental,                                     underlying premise!

RUMI FORUM
Presents

"Religion Builds Peace in the Holy Land"

Dr. Yehuda Stolov
Executive Director of the Interfaith Encounter Association

(Today)

Wednesday, November 18th
12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
at Rumi Forum
1150 17th Street NW, Suite 408  Washington, D.C. 20036

Religion is usually perceived as the biggest    obstacle for peace but once you question this assumption you will realize       that religion can and should be the strongest driving force for peace. The      Interfaith Encounter Association (IEA) works to promote genuine coexistence     and sustainable peace, through joint community building on the grassroots       level, using interactive interfaith dialogue as its vehicle. The a-political    and all-inclusive approach of the organization and its activities       continuously form the human infrastructure for peace in the Holy Land. In       its eight years of existence, the IEA have held more than 700 programs, with    thousands of participants - from across the political and religious spectra,    most of them encountering 'the other' for their first time. The IEA have        formed till now 31 on-going community-groups of interfaith encounter - from     the Upper Galilee to Eilat, including 4 Israeli-Palestinian groups, with        Palestinians from the West Bank. During 2008, IEA successfully organized 150    programs that included more than 4,000 participants, from all social    sectors. For its work the IEA has been recognized and awarded by: UNESCO,       the Immortal Chaplains Foundation, the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious      Understanding, Institute for Interreligious Studies, the World Movement for     Global Democracy and the Israeli Presidential Conference.

Yehuda Stolov is the executive director of the Interfaith Encounter     Association, an organization that strives to establish a framework for peace    in Israel and the Middle East by fostering mutual respect among individuals     and communities through interfaith dialogue. Dr. Stolov has lectured on the     role of religious dialogue in peace-building throughout the world, including    Jordan, Indonesia, Turkey, South Korea and Europe. In 2006, he was awarded      the Immortal Chaplains Foundation Prize for Humanity, which honors those who    "risked all to protect others of a different faith or ethnic origin." Among     other activities, Dr. Stolov was a member of the steering committee for the     United Nations Decade of Interreligious Dialogue and Cooperation for Peace.     He holds a B.S. and an M.Sc. in Physics and a Ph.D. from the Hebrew     University of Jerusalem.

Moderator :

www.rumiforum.org/37C64CCF.jpgSarah   Hasan is Founder and President of oneblue.org and a freelance   journalist who covers State Department and other news in the Washington, DC     area. She meets regularly with community leaders, scholars and business entities to foster and develop intercultural  and religious awareness.  An      integral part of her work at oneblue.org consists of providing outreach to      Muslim communities for entities such as PBS/WETA, foreign news media and the    State Department. Sarah is currently developing an interactive internet website project surrounding America and Islam as her main project at    oneblue.org. She has served as a member of the Women's Empowerment Action       Team on Education at the State Department led by Ambassador Shireen     Tahir-Kheli,  where she was involved in suggesting and discussing ways media    can be used to make education more accessible to women and girls around the     world and especially in Muslim countries. Subject: Next Nation Magazine Discussion Group Meeting. on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 from 3-5 PM on social responsibility
Date: Sun, 15 Nov 2009 11:35:02 -0500

Dear Nation Magazine Discussion Group:

What does it mean to take responsibility for one's actions and those of the society in which we live our embedded lives?   What did Ellsberg and Nixon understand differently?   And what if the UN's Goldstone report on the Gaza massacre is not treated by the US as the "Pentagon Papers" when it was finally released?  Who was responsible for the Fort Hood shootings: the Islamic psychiatrist in the US military from a Palestinian background born in Arlington, VA who went to Virginia Tech; or the military supervisors of the shooter who didn't hold him accountable to professional standards when he was practicing psychiatry; or the military bureaucracy which did not let him disenroll when he was traumatized by being ordered to serve in Afghanistan?

Rabbi Arthur Waskow has an insightful blog on this topic entitled "After Ft. Hood: To Bigotry, No Sanction" (at the URL http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/Suite.aspx).   Is it more moral to kill for jihad, patriotic nationalism, or as a mercenary?   What is likely to come out in a criminal trial of Khalid Sheik Mohammed as the so-called "master-mind" of the 9/11 attacks that could put their behavior in a different context than if they were tried in a military court, or subjected to targeted assassination?

Since I tend to find metaphors for most issues in the medical care system, what do you think of the Stupak Amendment that was incorporated into the House health care reform bill with the support of the Catholic bishops by inserting the prohibition of abortion for any health plan that depends on public funding, jeopardizing the meaning of universal coverage?  (Cartoonist Wasserman in the Boston Globe not so humorously opined: "What's the message to women?  Either don't get pregnant... Or don't be poor" -- a new meaning for what "Pro-Choice" means (see Washington Post cartoon reprint on Nov. 14, 2009).  What is good policy vs. good politics vs. winning by any means necessary as we consciously or unconsciously follow orders, or embark on our own crusades to change the world one step or one policy, or one system at a time?

Thinking of historical examples, like Nazi Germany, remember Pastor Martin Niemoller's famous quote: "First they came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Communist.  Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Jew.  Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up, because I was Protestant.  Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me."  (see http://www.hoboes.com/FireBlade/Politics/niemoller/).

Finally, are there any personal decisions that you have made in your life on the basis of expediency that did not live up to the moral standards that you respect?

These are some of the questions to explore in the next meeting of our Nation Magazine Discussion Group on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 3-5 PM at the Cleveland Park Public Library, 3310 Connecticut Avenue, on the second floor.  Please look over the emails that were sent on October 30 and November 7, 2009 for recommended readings.   And feel free to invite anyone else interested in participating in this discussion.

Sincerely,
Bob Griss, Coordinator
Nation Magazine Discussion Group in DC

Subject: 11/22/09 Café Philo DC: "Is Passion Compatible with Wisdom?"
To: undisclosed-recipients:;

Greetings:

The next meeting of Café Philo DC will convene this Sunday, November 22, 2009 at Reiter's Book Store, 1990 K St., NW, Washington, DC from 1pm to 3pm.  (Keep in mind that store entrance is located on 20th St. and that it is accessible from both the Farragut West Blue Line and Farragut North Red Line Metro stations.)  Hewitt Rose will moderate.

The topic, "Is Passion Compatible with Wisdom?", speaks to both epistemological concerns ('intellectual' vs. 'emotional' knowledge) and metaphysical problems (e.g., what is the relation of the reality of heart and head?)  Layered on top of these quandaries are social/political philosophical questions, e.g., what is the nature of collective understanding and meaning, and how do cognition and emotion -- and their relationship -- influence, sustain and justify our beliefs, values and behavior, both as individuals and as groups?

I will forward soon some suggested (optional) background readings on the topic.  As usual, please take a look at our affiliated Yahoo discussion list, Café Philo DC Dialogue, at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cafephilodcdialogue, for possible exchanges on this topic and where you may post your own thoughts as well.

For those planning to attend the discussion and participate in selecting the subsequent topic, here are some recent runners-up to consider:

o     What is the appeal of the apocalypse?

o     Is it ever reasonable to be irrational?

o     Is abortion homicide?

o     Is torture ever justifiable?

Best regards,

Ken Feldman
Founder, Café Philo DC

THE 30TH INTERFAITH CONCERT
Featuring five wonderful musical groups, including:

Kol Rinah Choir

Kol Rinah is Washington Hebrew Congregation's Volunteer Choir. It began in 1977 with ten members who enjoyed sharing their love of Jewish music with the congregation and who believed "he who sings prays twice."  The choir was given the name Kol Rinah - "Voice of Rejoicing."

In 1989, Cantor Mikhail Manevich became Kol Rinah's director.  Under his guidance, the choir grew and flourished.  Presently there are over thirty members.  The choir's repertoire includes close to 200 musical pieces that include Shabbat Melodies, Classical Reform, Israeli, Yiddish, Russian, Chassidic, Sephardic, Ladino, Jazz and those by WHC and Kol Rinah's in house composer, Bob Nath.  The music covers every facet of Jewish life:  Torah, love, life cycles, holidays and most fervent of Jewish hopes - peace.

Geotrees' English Language World Press Links Page:

http://www.geotrees.com/wpp.html

With President Obama in Asia at this time, visiting China, Singapore, Korea and Japan, we have a good opportunity to see something of how this country and this President look in the eyes of people overseas - people who, like ourselves, face the challenges and opportunities of the new century, but from very different and unfamiliar cultures, histories, mindsets, and interests.

Fortunately, most of these countries have a fairly lively English language press, usually with provision for reader opinion and feedback from around the world.  And Geotrees offers an English language press page, with links to a number of news services in all four lands.  We invite you to explore these services, and see how they might help illuminate our growing view of the world.

In addition to Japan, China, South Korea and Singapore, the World Press Page also has links to North Korean press outlets, Korean News and North Korea Books.  Of course, these are both official government organs.  But we feel that it's important to have access to a full spectrum of views, and thus to the information, knowledge and understanding that are only possible with such exposure.

The World Press Page has grown to include press links to those countries and peoples least familiar to and understood by the industrialized world, or "the West."  It is they who play an increasingly important role in human affairs, and often where the greatest challenges to human wellbeing, abundance, justice and peace exist - and where our need for knowledge and understanding may be greatest.

Geotrees' list is by no means complete.  Do you know of a newspaper, magazine, press service, broadcaster, blog or other English language source of merit?  If so, please let us know.  If we include them in the Press Page, we will be happy to credit you as source.

Geotrees is especially interested in how the world press is being engaged in the classroom.  We welcome any news you may have of such activity, and would be pleased to share it with others.

Dear Mr. Arden,

Thank you for sharing this video.  Your heart filled reading touched me immensely.

When I first read Noble Red Man I was impressed by the sharing of Mathew King's forthrightness.  His plain talk made clear the message he intended to share.  His words are timeless.  This video will carry his words to many that might never have the opportunity to read the book.

Your insights shared during the reading are a treasure.

Mr. King's dream lives on through your sharing of his vision.

I will certainly share the link to your video with many that I know will also appreciate the words shared.

Thank you for the gift of preserving and sharing the words of the WisdomKeepers.

Respectfully,
Pat Talley

Harvey answers:

Pat-Thank you for your kind words.  They warm my old heart.  I was 74 yesterday,,,and, hey, I'm just getting started!  Hope to meet you some dayŠyou ever invite old authors to speaking venues?  I'd be honored.  I'll be in Houston to give some talks sometime this fall, when my new NOBLE RED MAN audio CD (with music) comes out.  Publisher George Blitch of www.haveyouthought.com is bringing me down; maybe have a sidetrip to Corpus Christi?   If you like give him a call at ***-***-****.

Devoted to the cause of peace

Devoted to the cause of peace

Lansing State Journal

After spending much of his life promoting nonviolent principles, priest recognized for efforts

The Rev. Peter Dougherty
Photo: Rod Sanford/Lansing State Journal

The Rev. Peter Dougherty has traveled to hotspots all over the world.

Haiti. Bosnia. Israel's Palestinian territories. The strife-torn state of Chiapas, Mexico.

Fr. Dougherty even was arrested last summer while trying to defuse any potential violence at the 2008 Republican National Convention.

The 75-year-old Catholic priest from Lansing will go anywhere or do anything to make, keep or promote peace: "I believe that love is the most formidable of all cosmic energies," he said.  "That energy, to me, is God."

But on a recent, chilly fall afternoon, Fr. Dougherty was sweating the details of his latest trip - a trek to India to collect an international peace prize.

Packing and planning?  No problem.  Traveler's checks?  Fr. Dougherty had until 6 p.m. to pick some up.

But a visa to allow travel to India?  That one had him holding his breath.

The last time he tried to go to India, Fr. Dougherty's many treks as an activist to the world's hotspots caused officials to turn him down.

"I was not given a visa," he said.  "I found out about a month ago that was why."

A travel agent's call at mid-afternoon brought Fr. Dougherty the good news: the Indian government had OK'd the trip.

Fr. Dougherty collected his $10,000 award - given annually to someone outside of India who models Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi's peaceful ideals - on Friday.

While in India, he'll also attend a two-day gathering of Gandhi's followers, visit Calcutta and go to several villages with ongoing projects designed to lift residents out of poverty.

"He is a loving, caring, challenging prophetic spirit, and I think that is what is being recognized," said Joan Tirak, co-founder of Loaves and Fishes ministry and a friend of Fr. Dougherty's since the 1970s.  "He is an embodiment of who Gandhi would be today."

Reaching out to others

Fr. Dougherty grew up in Adrian, attended the now defunct St. John Provincial Seminary in Plymouth and was ordained a priest in 1961.  His first assignment was at All Saints Church, a working-class parish in southwest Detroit.

"I saw myself as a parish priest," he said.

By 1970, he'd been moved to Holy Trinity Student Parish in Ypsilanti, which served Eastern Michigan University.  Both the social revolution and the Vietnam War were in full swing, and Dougherty found himself caught up in issues that concerned students.  Among them: ending the war and dismantling the threat of nuclear war.

"That's where I got turned on my head, at Eastern," he said.  "I said, 'Well, I'm going to advise young men and women on this war, I'd better learn what it is about.' "

As Fr. Dougherty studied, read and talked with students, his passion for peace grew.  In 1975, Bishop Kenneth Povish relieved Dougherty of parish duties so he could devote himself to the cause of peace.

"Jesus was about loving, which means you heal people, you protect people," Fr. Dougherty said.  "You challenge people who are wrong when they are abusing others."

He co-founded the Abrahamic Peace Community in East Lansing, which served the homeless for seven years.  But that was low-profile compared to his work with the Michigan Faith and Resistance Team, purposely trespassing at places such as K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, where B-52s were kept, and at Williams Research Corp. in Walled Lake, which manufactured engines for cruise missiles.  He spent a cumulative two years in jail for activities such as those.

Connecting with people

Fr. Dougherty founded the Michigan Peace Team in 1993.  His base of operations now is an underheated, third-floor office piled with folders, papers and books such as Jimmy Carter's "We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land."

Fr. Dougherty lives, by choice, at the poverty level, so he doesn't have to pay taxes that fund wars.  A couple of ties hang in the corner of his office, but he cannot recall the last time he wore one.

With the peace team or not, he is instantly recognizable.  His daily uniform consists of T-shirts, cargo pants and brightly striped hooded cotton jackets from Mexico.  His snow-white hair and goatee frame a narrow face with eyes that instantly engage.

Mayurika Poddar said she appreciates Fr. Dougherty's sense of humor, but also his ability to connect with people.

"There's joy he gives to everybody when he meets them," said Ms. Poddar of Okemos, who has known Dougherty for years.  "No matter who you are, he makes you most welcome in his heart."

That ability has served Fr. Dougherty well with the Peace Team.  Its members, trained in nonviolent negotiation techniques, put on bright-colored vests identifying them as peacemakers and go wherever conflicts may arise.

"It was not easy to get that off the ground," Tirak said.  "But he has been faithful to what it means to go and stand with people in places of conflict, and he linked up with people who were doing that around the world."

Michigan Peace Team members attended the execution of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, have gone to political conventions and other U.S. events.  But it is in places such as Chiapas and Israel where they feel they may do the most good.

There, they say, the mere presence of international observers keeps armed troops from firing on civilians, and may help keep civilians negotiating with the government instead of resorting to violence.

Spreading the message

Joe Droste of Lansing Township went with Fr. Dougherty to the West Bank several years ago on a trip timed to help keep Israeli troops from preventing Palestinians from harvesting their olive crops.

The men lived with local families, worked beside them and mingled with Palestinians and Israelis alike.

"There isn't any question in my mind that the peacekeeping message that Peter teaches does work," said Mr. Droste, a retired GM worker whose regular activities include protesting the Iraq war at the Capitol at noon Fridays.  "It keeps people from reaching out and being belligerent."

Shrikumar Poddar of Okemos lives part-time in his native India and runs his own foundation dedicated to peaceful change.  He was among those who nominated Fr. Dougherty for the prize from the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation in Mumbai.  The award, which carries a prize equivalent to about $10,000, goes to someone from another country who embodies Gandhi's nonviolent principles.  Fr. Dougherty is looking forward to spending the award on his cause.

"The money is badly needed by the Michigan Peace Team," he said.

No plans to retire

Fr. Dougherty celebrated his 75th birthday in August with a birthday bash that served as a fundraiser for the Michigan Peace Team.  Despite his age, he has no plans to retire from peace work anytime soon.

In fact, some members of the team recently left for an exploratory trip to Juarez, Mexico, where drug-related violence makes life dangerous.

He takes heart in some things: the nonviolent end of dictatorships in the former Soviet Union and former East Germany, for two, as well as the downsizing of nuclear arsenals in both the U.S. and Russia.

He understands that his dangerous work is not for everyone, but says there are plenty of other opportunities to make peace: volunteer at local shelters, chapters of groups such as Amnesty International, or take up neighborhood issues.

"There are hundreds or organizations doing all kinds of good in all kinds of communities," he said.  "Seek them out."

EVENTS (AT) GEOTREES. COM

.....

(Monday, November 9, 2009)  We've just spoken with Politics and Prose Books, and have additional information concerning Greg Mortenson's visit to Washington on Thursday, December 3, and the publication of his new book Stones into Schools.  We've repeated our original message below, including links to Sixth and I and to Politics and Prose.  If you have any further questions, please contact the bookstore directly.

TIMING:
About half the tickets for Mr. Mortenson's talk - 200 out of a total of about 400 - are still available.  But the store believes that they will sell out quickly.  GET YOURS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

THE PURCHASE:
  • You can purchase book or ticket separately, or both for one price.
  • Ticket price is the same for store members and nonmembers, because this event is a fundraiser for the Central Asia Institute: tickets alone are $12.00.
  • The book itself isn't available yet, but will be out in time for the talk.
  • Price for the book Stones into Schools, plus ticket, is $32.00.
  • You can make your purchase in any of three ways: On line, over the phone, and in person at the store.
  • You can contact the store and reach a real human being immediately at 202-364-1919.  See the link below for online access.

THE STORE: A SPECIAL REGIONAL RESOURCE
Geotrees.Com recommends Politics and Prose generally.  The store is a special crossroads of knowledge, culture (and cultures), understanding, intellect, and creativity - well worth the trip from the region's fringes.  (Good parking is available in back and on nearby streets; there are restaurants on the same block.)  To enjoy a civilized interlude for young and old, visit Politics and Prose.
(We also encourage patronizing independent bookstores in general.  Please let us know of any that are special to you.)

Thanks for your attention - we hope to see you there!

Coordinator, Geotrees.Com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11/5/2009

The All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) condemns the cowardly and unforgivable attack at Fort Hood and expresses heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families.

No religious or political ideology could ever justify or excuse such inexcusable and indiscriminate violence.  The attack was horrible in that it targeted the all-volunteer army that protects our nation and our precious freedom.  American Muslims stand with our fellow citizens in offering prayers for the victims.

Several thousand Muslim men and women faithfully serve in the United States military, including ADAMS community members who have served honorably and loyally.  Two of our community members who served in the US Military were killed in action in Iraq.  ADAMS held Funeral Services for them and they were buried in Arlington Cemetary.  We appreciate their service, as well as the service of all dedicated volunteers committed to our country.

Location: ISNA Interfaith Office

Islam holds the human soul in high esteem, and considers the attack against innocent human beings a grave sin.  ADAMS states clearly that those who commit acts murder and cruelty in the name of Islam are not only destroying innocent lives, but are also betraying the values of the faith they claim to represent.

We repudiate and dissociate ourselves from any Muslim group or individual who commits such brutal and un-Islamic acts.  We refuse to allow our faith to be held hostage by the criminal actions of a tiny minority acting outside the teachings of both the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

Subject: Exciting News for 2010 at Just Vision

Dear Friends,

I hope you are well! Just Vision has been on a roll this month, reaching out to diverse audiences in Israel, Palestine, the U.S. and the broader Arab world to bring the stories of courageous civic leaders in nonviolence and peacebuilding to the public eye.

Yesterday, the Los Angeles Times ran an important article about the uphill struggle facing Palestinian nonviolence leaders in the West Bank village of Bil'in. This is following on the heels of a New York Times article about the same issue. With the upcoming release of our new film, "Budrus," we hope to transform this conversation since the villagers in Budrus brought women to the front lines, united all Palestinian political factions, cooperated with Israeli activists and successfully saved their village from destruction without arms. The L.A. Times article quotes a Palestinian nonviolence leader as stating, "There aren't many visible successes so far." Budrus is a visible success -- but we need you to help us make it known to the larger world. The more people know about this effort, the more they might see a horizon of possibility for other villages that have been struggling courageously to preserve their lands and livelihoods from destruction without arms.

We showed excerpts of "Budrus," which is nearing completion, at a Google Tech Talk in NYC, to members of the Women Donors Network, the Young Presidents Organization's Arab American Action Forum as well as to J Street Conference attendees. Our staff members have spoken on panels and led workshops at the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation, the Interfaith Youth Core Conference, J Street and more. You can view my remarks at J Street's opening plenary online by scrolling through the movie icons.

Last week, more than 300 Palestinian citizens of Israel - primarily students, parents and teachers - gathered to watch Encounter Point at El Kasami College in Baqa al-Gharbiya. The screening was followed by a panel that included Najwa and George Sa'adeh and Ayelet and Tzvika Shahak.

We also conducted screenings and discussions at Harvard University's Program on Negotiation, at Wellesley College as well as with 100 high school students from the city of Chicago at the University of Chicago.

We are very proud that 3 years after its release, Encounter Point has reached millions of viewers around the world and continues to generate learning and engagement, as well as to open doors for the film subjects.

Please stay tuned. 2010 is going to be a big year for us with the launch of our new website with special tools for educators and media, and the release of a powerful new film. "Budrus" has already been recognized as one of the most promising films of 2010. We need your help to complete this project and bring new energy and support to those struggling nonviolently for change.

Many thanks for your ongoing involvement,

Ronit Avni
Founder and Executive Director

COMING TUESDAY: The Medicated Child

Airs Nov 3rd, 9PM ET (check local listings)

WATCH ONLINE
This week's FRONTLINE broadcast proceeds from an astounding fact: Some six million American children are taking increasingly powerful prescription drugs whose effects have not been fully tested--even in adults.

Is this good medicine for families who are often desperate for solutions, or an uncontrolled experiment involving children sometimes as young as four years old?

In this affecting film, a rebroadcast of The Medicated Child, FRONTLINE producer Marcela Gaviria focuses on a few of the more than one million children now being given a controversial diagnosis-- bipolar disease, a condition which, until recently, had only been thought to exist in adults.

The film paints an intimate portrait of these troubled kids on the edge, as their families struggle with treatment decisions that raise fundamental questions about when and how child psychiatrists should intervene. Threaded throughout are Gaviria's interviews with medical experts, researchers, and federal regulators, who she presses about the promotion, testing, and efficacy of these new psychiatric drugs for children.

We hope you'll watch Tuesday night, and join us online for interviews with medical experts, aparent's guide to child bipolar disease, and an opportunity to join the discussion.

And, if you've missed our recent broadcasts, you can watch The Warning online-- it's already been viewed more than two million times -- and Obama's War, which is not far behind with almost a million-and-a-half views.

CONCERTS IN EMBASSIES AND AMBASSADORS' RESIDENCES

Dear Friends,

An important update:  The first 5 concerts sold out and we had waiting lists.

On November 7 at The Austrian Embassy The Euro Kids Festival, The Austrian Cultural Forum and The Embassy Series will present Mozart's "Bastien und Bastienne," written by the 12 year old Mozart.  We will have wonderful young soloists and the brilliant guest baritone from Austria, Steven Scheschareg.  Bring your children and grandchildren for this spectacular event (especially for children ages 4 to 12). You can reserve your tickets on http://www.kidseurofestival.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=86&Itemid=86 These tickets are free, but require reservations.

The opera will have the D.C. Youth Orchestra, conducted by Jesus Manuel Berard and the opera will be performed at 10:30 and again at 1 pm.  A roving magician, David Morey,  will entertain the children and parents accompanying.  Tickets are limited, so reserve today.  The performance will last about an hour and the opera will be explained in kids' language by a 12 year old Mozart lookalike.

On November 13, 14 at the Bahrain Residence- great Bahraini guitarist Mohammed Rashid Mohammed, who won first place at World Youth Day 2008, was names best guitar player and took first place in the Isa Town Bahrain competition.  He plays guitar, guitar bass, piano and electric guitar.  Performing with him will be Zeyad Khalifa bin Zaiman, outstanding clarinetist, guitarist and pianist.  He won best player in the Arab Youth Forum in Jordan, took first place in the children's forum in the United Arab Emirates and won first place in his first year in the Higher Institute for Music.  Listen to the recording on the website.  It's quite wonderful.

A lovely Bahraini buffet will follow the concert and it will be a unique event.  Ambassador Huda Ezra Nonoo has donated a  gold pendant.  Raffle tickets can be purchased at the concert.  It is an exquisite piece and you have a very good chance to win.  We highly recommend this unusual event. $100/including a great Middle Eastern buffet.- Tickets are limited for each event and we urge you to order now.

November 20: Singapore Embassy- Lee-Chin Siow, violin; Enrique Graf, piano- very few tickets left-  Critically-acclaimed Singaporean violinist Lee-Chin and award-winning American pianist Enrique Graf, both professors at the College of Charleston,  present signature works by American composers including William Grant Still, one of the most important African-American composers and Amy Beach, the pre-eminent American woman composer of her age and a trailblazer in her own right.  Lee-Chin will also perform works that mark significant milestones in her journey to America, to celebrate Thanksgiving and to pay tribute to 'a country that has given me so much.' Asian hors-d'oeuvres, wine, drinks, etc., will be served.- $65 including artists' reception

December 4: Syrian Residence- Kinan Azmeh, clarinet and Dinuk Wijeratne, piano.  - Listen to these great artists on our site This lovely residence provides a wonderful venue for our patrons and the gracious Ambassador and his wife will serve an opulent Middle Eastern buffet- about 20 places left- $100/including reception.  These are superb artists.  Hear Kinan on our website.

December 16: German Embassy- Beethoven's Birthday Celebration with Ann Schein, Earl Carlyss, Jerome Barry and Darrett Adkins You will hear Beethoven Lieder, The "Archduke" Trio and a violin sonata with piano. A cold buffet, amply served with cold cuts, bread, pastries, wine and drinks will be served after the concert.- $55.;

Hurry up, my friends, to purchase your tickets at the new Chinese Embassy.  They are going very fast and you really won't want to miss this fabulous concert and artist.

January 16: New Chinese Embassy (newly added)- Di Wu, piano- On sale now!- Praised in The Wall Street Journal as "a most mature and sensitive pianist," Chinese-born Di Wu's reputation as an elegant yet exciting musician continues to grow, and 2009 has been a banner year.  During the spring and summer she made her New York Alice Tully Hall Recital debut as winner of Juilliard's William Petschek Piano Debut Recital Award, was named Artist of the Month by MusicalAmerica.com, and was awarded a Vendome Virtuosi prize at Lisbon's prestigious Vendome Competition as well as one of the coveeted prizes at the thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.  in September she made he Philadelphia Orchestra debut at a gala benefit concert under Charles Dutoit. The new embassy was designed by I.M. Pei and this will be the first concert at the embassy.  A lovely buffet reception follows the concert.  Program: Granados, Schoenberg, Prokofiev and Debussy.  I urge you not to miss this very special event. $70 including buffet dinner.

Warmest regards, Jerome Barry, Artistic Director/Founder, The Embassy Series
