Description

The Global Peace Campaign was launched four days after the September 11th terrorist attack on the United States.

The GPC's initial objectives were:

1. To call upon the US, its allies and the world community to address the root causes of terrorism, to adopt a non-military response to the atrocity, and to respect international law in bringing the terrorists to justice.

2. To encourage people to talk with and write to friends, family, colleagues, media, community and political leaders about the root causes of terrorism, and about appropriate, lawful and non-military responses to the attack.

3. To raise funds for a full page advertisement in the New York Times publicising a letter to President Bush from former US Marine Corps Sergeant Greg Nees.

The GPC also called for people of all religions & spiritual paths, as well as non-believers, to pause for a moment of united prayer, meditation or reflection each day at 8.45am New York time on the words ~ May Peace Prevail on Earth ~ .

Having achieved the target of raising $100,000 to publish the New Tork Times advert on October 9th, the GPC steering group agreed the following broad aims & objectives for its on-going work:

1. To promote awareness and understanding of the roots of the global crisis

2. To promote and develop projects that cultivate global peace and community harmony

3. To network and collaborate with like-minded groups and individuals

4. To create opportunities for dialogue, sharing and conversation

The GPC is dismayed by the bombing of Afghanistan and the further loss of innocent civilian lives, and calls for an immediate halt to military action.
