Hey guys! Happy Summer.

For July...

First Friday. If you get a chance, stop by from 6 pm till midnight to
see the werks of Gretchen, Manning Kimmel, Fania Greenwood, Richard
Steele plus many, many more artist.

The galleries are still on the Second and Third floors, but I have
moved my other stuff that I offer for sale to the Basement. Stop by
and take a look and see what you think. The basement will offer me a
chance to do more live music performances (the Harm Stryker, Clang
Quartet & Birds in the Meadow show was awesome!) and film/video
screenings. It also offers a really cool place to hang out out of
first fridays too. I think of the basement as a lounge. I'm very open
to suggestions as to "what" to do with the basement. I'm also taking
suggestions for naming the basement. I"m thinking of using the word
"lounge" in the title. Email me your suggestions and we'll start a
list and vote.

Father and Son was voted "best antique store" by the readers of the
Indy. Thanks to everyone who voted. We deserve it!!! We were also
voted best antique store by the viewers of citysearch.

Bicycle Rides? Several bike riders have been gathering sunday evenings
at 6pm for a very casual bike ride around downtown raleigh, the
greenway, ncsu, plus other very cool places around raleigh. If you
would like to join us for a non competitive, very casual, slow paced,
fun bike ride, its a blast. I suggest calling and touching base before
the ride for the meeting place. All styles of bikes are welcomed!

Let me know how you are doing and what is happening in your life.

I hope you have a wonderful summer.

thanks

I have loved art since I was a small child. I have been legally blind
since birth, and have often wondered whether that fact has influenced
my take on the visual world. I have always been drawn to bold color and
form, and I am so excited by the unique and unusual. One of my personal
goals has been to make art that brings something electric, something
inventive to the world. My formal art training began when I attended
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1989, and studied
under who was at the time the Head of the Art Department, Marvin
Saltzman. He gave me much inspiration and showed me how to start
finding my own style. But, for the most part, I consider myself
self-taught. Most of my techniques I learned from trial and error after
I graduated in 1993.  I sold my first painting that same year, which
was the first time I seriously considered becoming a professional
artist. I joined the Orange County Open Studio Tour in 1996, becoming
the youngest participant on the tour. This year will be my 10th year on
the Tour.  I have exhibited work in the Fayetteville Museum of Art, the
Duke Museum of Art, and at various venues in North Carolina for the
past 12 years at group and solo exhibitions. I have also sold my works
all over the country via the internet, and even a few to foreign
collectors. My recent work includes cement & metal sculptures, resin &
silver jewelry, pottery, mixed media assemblages, painted furniture and
decorative accessories, mixed media and painted lamps, digital art and
photography. Please visit www.donanova.com for more of all branches of
my work, or visit some of my ongoing local exhibitions.

DESCRIPTION OF CURRENT WORK:
Dona Nova's painting style is fluid and constantly morphing.  Though
always employing acrylic paints to produce works that are unusually
vibrant and non-traditional, they cannot be categorized into a single
niche. She has ranged from bold, graphic, modern interiors, to pop art
animals, to mixed media industrial robots.  In her most recent series
she uses various combinations of water, acrylic mediums, resin, found
objects, and mica powders to form elusive liquid moments.  Multiple
painting techniqes are then applied in many layers to form a complex
abstract world.  When the paintings are completed, these moments are
forever captured, with minute details and beautiful effects intact.
thaNks for your coNtiNued support!

Bradford W. Mott will be a special guest at the convention this year.
Bradford is the author of the Stella Atari 2600 emulator and last year,
he worked on a gameboy cartridge that was released.

Brad will be at the convention Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Live Music in order of performance

6pm. Phasmatodea - inprov. not so ambient, ambient music.
http://www.phasmatodea.net/

7pm. PRIMUM MOBILE think radiohead, think lush, think really cool bands
from the early 90s (shoegaze) that influenced many of today pop band.
Scotty Carey performs on guitar and keyboard while bringing with him his
hard disk recorder. Its truly awesome.

8pm. Clang Quartet - an legend in our time that only a few people are
aware of. come on MTV...make this guy a millionaire! Performing very
cool experimental music, layered with some noise. Clang also shares a
visual performance of his interpretation of the Crufix of Christ.

9pm. Receptors - using 6 game boy handheld video game machines that have
"homebrew" cartridges that allow music to be created and looped, they
will perform music that will leave you in awe. how could that music come
from a game boy? they have coined the term " I want to hold your handheld"

MWA - they will debuting their Atari 2600 synth. based loosey on synth
pop with lots of experimental music using drum machines and vintage
synths. they will also bring with them a very, very, very rare (so rare
that i have never seen on in my life) "Atari Video Music (from what i
understand, you hook it up to your TV and psychedelic images appear on
your TV) that we plan to hook up (hopefully) to a lcd projector. crazy
huh? http://www.atarihq.com/museum/miscatari/avmusic.html (mommie was an
asteroid)

10 pm. Valid Core - this guy is from High Point, NC. He is a big
collector of analogue synths, drum machines, samplers and sequencers. he
plays synth pop music and he does it solo. he is almost finished with
his first record. Watch out Raleigh, you'll be amazed.

11 pm. Projexorcism - think A/V Geeks on acid if you will with Skotty
Irving providing the sound track with Skotty being on mushrooms...well,
Skotty or Skip may not appreciate the parallel, but they use 16mm film
projectors, about 4 of them. they hang them from light trees using
chains and ropes. they attach thinks like mirrors, cds (shinny side),
magnifying glasses and crazy pieces of transparent lenses. they had my
guest artist performing crazy experimental music. the projectors are on
strobe light controllers and they go in and out. the audio from the
films are being looped and sampled...using crazy delays and other audio
effects. you can not stand up without holding on to a door jam, this
crazy experience will make you think you are having a seizure.

Post Midnight Phasmatodea - inprov. not so ambient, ambient music.
http://www.phasmatodea.net/

Music will be happening on all 4 floors! Video Games on all 4 floors!
(yes, the top floor will be opened, come see this old bldg that hasn't
been touched much at all since 1921)

Saturday October 2, 2004 Convention resumes at 11am.

Tom Karches will be with us on sat (possibly Friday too) to talk about
circuit bending. he has performed several bends and will demo. some of
his circuit bent musical instruments.

4 pm music by Tengu Anthony has some confrontational vocals prepared
that he'd like to unleash on an audience while Steve provides audacity.

Sunday October 3, 2004 Convention resumes at 1pm.

Sunday....well, word on the street that i will be selling my entire
collection of classic video games and such. i even desire to sell all of
my stuff at the shop that is classic video gaming related. so on Sunday,
everything i have left will be half priced.

More guests that will be at the convention....
Eric from moncure will be bring lots of his collection to share with
everyone including his commodore 64 that is running windows. sounds
crazy and i haven't see it yet, but there is an early windows software
program that was created for the commodore 64....he also love Atari and
have every Atari 7800 cart ever released.

Two Brothers from Mt. Sirey called the other night...they wanna come and
vend. They also produce a community TV show about classic gaming.

A few more people are coming to vend and set up their stuff. like in the
past, I'm sure more will show up and say, hi, can i set up?...

Bring you classic video games to share with everyone. In the past people
have brought their systems and games and set them up for playing. Its
awesome!

I’m still waiting to hear from a few more music performers. If you would
like to perform on Sat or Sun, drop me a line or give me a call.

Its gonna be great. The N & O emailed me asking lots of questions...I’m
praying for a article about the convention. We are expecing 200 to 1200
people to attend the entire weekend. Don’t miss this one...its gonna be
BIGG...

thanks for you continued support

Brad Mott wil be attend the convention.  Brad is the Arthur of the Atari 2600 Emulator "Stella".

Receptors & MWA (both electronic and experimental music) will be performing and MWA will be debuting their Atari 2600 synth.

Projectorcism uses four 16mm projectors suspended on a light stand, projecting film through a magnifying glass and refracted light from cdr's mounted to the sides of the camera lense's.  He then manipulates the footage with some kind of switch box and samples and processes the sounds from the films to create this crazy collage of sound bites and scratches and all this is accompanied by the projectors swinging out of the control projecting all over the room and his partner playing a rhodes organ to it.  It's really amazing and the piece that he performed was inspired by this event he threw at a bar in NC where the evening digress into the local rednecks expressing their ignorance and racist tendencies by calling his friends nigger's and stuff like that. When he confronted them and the bartender, and asked the bartender to do something about it, the bartender told him "you're in the south, what do you want me to do?  You've got to educate them." so he collected all this footage from documentaries (all on 16mm) of slavery, civil rights, racists blockbusters like gone with the wind, and some film strip with bill cosby talking about racist portrayals of black people in literature.
