Personally, I like to follow that up with a suggestion to try that
comment rectally inserted. There's only one thing worse than a
Vampire player who plays for killing - a prejudiced jerk who sees
that in every player of the game, even when it's played in the
mature, insightful way it's meant to be played.

It's almost like the Spark, or at least the impression I get of it.
Many folks with the Spark do little to no harm, using it to develop
new things and improve the lot of the masses, like good little
minions of society. It's the few who actually do cause problems, by
madness or design, who give the others a bad name among the unwashed
rabble - I mean, the common man. All Sparks therefore tend to be
viewed as loose cannons - dangerous, but too beneficial on the whole
to simply be disposed of. See? Prejudice. It's a dirty little
beast, regardless of what it's applied to. Even something as simple
as a hobby.

Yes, I just accused you, original poster, of prejudice. Yes, I'm
aware that it's not very nice to do that, and you'll probably object
to what I said. I don't care. I've got everything laid out - back
up your slanderous lies, apologize, or just remember to be more
careful before you start dispensing discourtesy. I'm rather curious
which you'll choose.

Jeez, can't you guys turn this into something constructive, like a
discussion as to whether the "Dame Ædith" vampire hunter card in the

or be a vampire?

I would definitely have to agree on this. I'm a gamer myself, first
introduced to the Foglios by their work on M:TG. Gamers are a varied
bunch who defy generalizations, and most of us are quite normal!
Heck, even Phil and Kaja are gamers, as best as I can tell.

Now, working in a hobby shop, we do have one running joke about
gamers. (Shame on us) Dealing with solicitations and orders on a
weekly basis, we've noticed that companies run by gamers tend to be,
um, late. Maybe they're easily distracted, or have a different
concept of the word "deadline!" Maybe they're busy playing D&D and
didn't realize it was time to ship something out. :P At any rate,
almost all our gaming stuff, and the comics and merchandise related
to gaming, tend to be late on a regular basis. It's part of the
business, and we love 'em anyway. ;)

Speaking of which... can we expect GG this month?

Gads but you guys are making me feel old. I first heard of Phil Foglio at
Rivercon in Louisville and from seeing the "*Star Trek* Primer" in the paperback
collection of SF comics called *Startoons*. It was a pleasant surprise to start
encountering his stuff later in gaming.

I hesitate to call them normal, and I'm very glad they aren't. Normal
people are boring and don't have good story ideas.

Hey, hey, hey. Be nice to us kids.. We can't all have been to the first
WorldCon.

	 I see a thread here - one copy of D'Arc Tangent, pre-ordered.

There are but few folks yet living who can claim that honor. Nycon 1 in
New York City, 1939, attendance 200. <http://worldcon.org/wclist.html>

Obligatory Phil Content: Phil Foglio has had three nominations and two
wins for Best Fan Artist Hugo, nomination in 1976 [same year as "The
Capture"] and wins in 1977 and 1978. "The Capture" was nominated in
1976 for "Best Dramatic Presentation" along with "Dark Star," "Monty
Python And The Holy Grail," "Rollerball" and the winner, "A Boy And His
Dog." <http://www.locusmag.com/SFAwards/Db/Hugo1976.html>

Me too.

Bill Jackson, owner of one copy each of D'Arc Tangent, Illeagal
Aliens ("...and one guy named Remo." I love it!), Zap Gun for Hire,
Psmith, Angel and the Ape mini-series, Stanley and his Monster mini-
series, Buck Godot, What's New 1, 2, & 3, the first few issues of
Mythadventures (and all the trade paperbacks), and a few of the
Xxxenophile collections. My name is Bill, and I'm a bookaholic.

I actually bought a copy of "D'Arc Tangent" used at a half-price book store.
It was pretty cool. Then I lost it (along with most of my other comics) in
a fire. That was less cool.

This happens for various reasons.

A: few gaming companies make enough to have staff writers; freelancers
sometimes get attacks of LIFE. Ugh. (Been there, done that.)

B: some freelancers (NOT all! I know many very reliable and professional
and wonderful freelancers, and that would be most of them) are flakes
who get things in late, not to spec, or not at all (or some combination
of the above!).

B2: some publishers are perfectionists and when presented with B1,
above, will simply take the time to Do It Right.

C: some gamelines are CURSED. CURSED, I tell you! Announce them in
the distributor mags and THINGS WILL HAPPEN to make them late! I
swear it! It's a CURSE.

The Ethereal Player's Guide has been moved from, uh, Dec. to Feb. O:p

And this ties into the list-topic sort of, in that in our playtest game
of the EPG, the characters ran into a couple of lucid dreamers in the
dreamlands who were creating dragons. Little purple dragons that
said "Growf."

I never got a Warning Notice <tm> either -- unless you count how long it
took for the original core rules to get to print. But it might be! How
long did it take for the original core rules to get to print? Were they
announced first? Did things HAPPEN to delay them?

Me, I figure it's open season on White Wolf due to the famous "Page XX"[1]
references and the persistent lack of an index. Recently we were looking for
something in a Changeling[2] book, more fools we.

I just checked: 2nd ed Basic D&D has an index, as do each of the five
RuneQuest books. And I remember a comment years ago about the Amber book "It
has an index, you know something's wrong." So it's not like gamers can't make
indices.

[1] Unless that was an Ars Magic thing. I forget my gaming history, and who
made what and bought whom.

[2] My prejudice against WW games isn't "they want to play a bunch of
killers", it's "they want to play a bunch of angsty whiners. Oh, my Humanity!
Oh, my Banality!" Changeling in particular read like total pandering to
gamers and their feeling of being different misunderstood. But I figured the
game in play would be as good as the gamers, so there I am.

Well if you want a different flavor why not try Werewolf or Mage? Any player
who tries the whole angst thing with Garou just are just not playing it right.
Any Garou who goes around feeling sorry for himself is an idiot. In Mage on the
other hand you potentially have more power than the others all put together.
You just have to be more subtle about it. No angst but maybe a certain amount
of frustration as Paradox firmly informs you of your limits.

I've also got a dislike of the apocalyptic world-going-to-hell
world-running-down tenor of all the WW games. Well, I don't know much about
Mage.

So much power, yet they're still losing the war, right?

Okay, I've been avoiding this whole off-topic discussion...
well, because it's off-topic. But there was a certain point
that I think was missed because of the use of "angst" in his
post which automatically is associated with our Vampire/Goth
friends. And it's at the heart of my personal
dissatisfaction with WW games.

<Rant on>
Their games take advantage of and reinforce a person's
psychological dissociation with "normal" society. Do you
feel different from other people? Well, do we have the game
for you. It shocks me that people don't notice that each of
the main characters in their WoD games is built around a
dissociative mental illness.

Vampire: Depression (My very life is a curse.)

Werewolf: Delusional Psychosis (The Apocalypse is coming.
When will you Rage?)

Mage: Paranoid Schizophrenia (We know the "real" world,
most are blind, but "Others" are out to get us because we
know.)

Changeling: Dissociative Identity (No one sees me as I
really am.)

Wraith: Depersonalization Disorder (No one knows I even
exist. I am a ghost.)

You know, it's just my opinion, and that's all it is. I
don't need to reminded how "your game" is different from
that. I'm sure it is. But can you honestly tell me that
you haven't met some WW gamers around town or maybe at a con
that made you say, "O-kay, their just a bit *too* much into
this." They're the ones I worry about.

I think gaming is a great way to bring people out of their
shells. It bothers me to think of it doing the opposite.
<Rant off>

To bring this slightly back on topic, this is one reason I
like Girl Genius. Agatha treats everyone the same whether
Spark, construct, Jager, or just regular person. Their
differences don't make them any less a part of her world.

Thanks for listening, and none of my opinions are meant to
offend anyone... but sometimes I get lucky. ;-)

Gygax upset the writers with his attitude to volunteer staff at
conventions so they rewrote Chevalier to be a separate game [C&S]
rather than a D&D sourcebook.

So few systems are not cursed that they've stopped sending
warnings out about the ones that are.

Exalted or Aeon/Trinity is better for a different flavour than those. The rules
work
slightly better and there doesn't seem to be a need for a second edition to get
the
rules right.

Funny, I've always taken the WW games as metaphors for
adolesence.

> Vampire: Depression (My very life is a curse.)

I've gone through a weird change in my life, and now
I'm moody, with flashes of power and strange driving
hungers and lusts for things that I used to have no
interest in or a disgust for.

> Werewolf: Delusional Psychosis (The Apocalypse is

I've discovered I have great strength and power, but
now there's hair in funny places!

>
> Mage: Paranoid Schizophrenia (We know the "real"

I understand things now that I never did, and know
things in ways others don't, but the rest of the world
is resistant to my vision!

> Changeling: Dissociative Identity (No one sees me as

I am strange and alien to the social groups around me.

> Wraith: Depersonalization Disorder (No one knows I

I live in a world where I'm unimportant, I'm obsessed
with trivial issues, and random punishment materialize
out of nowhere!

I agree! Agatha is very humane.
