Sociopath? No. Delusional? Maybe. Misguided? Maybe.
Othar BELIEVES what he is doing is right. And let's face it, for the
most part he is right. Most sparks the world knows of are dangerous
madmen(and madwomen) who care little about the people who get caught
in their petty wars.
Even the lovable goofs of the circus are potentialy dangerous.

Oh, there's no question. Othar is delusional and misguided -- he thinks
he's the hero of a serial adventure story, and that God will protect him
from death or permanent injury. I think delusions of that type are a
recognized symptom of paranoia.

Being right about the problem (Sparks tend to be dangerous to anyone
within miles of them) doesn't make Othar right about the solution to the
problem (kill them all before they can defend themselves.)

Yes and no. I have done a bit of silversmithing in the past, but in
this case, I combined two other people's work that I won on eBay (The
Source of All Things (TM)). I took a sterling bat pendant (perfect
wings!) from Scotland:

And added one of Paul Badali's wonderful trilobite castings:

http://tinyurl.com/dltfc

I eyedballed the auctions, and as it turned out, they fit perfectly!
Then I *was* gonna silver-solder, but I got impatient ... and what

There is also the simple fact that changes in diet and environment can have an
affect (generally minor) on hair color. Since what we are talking about is
bsically differences in highlighting, and the Circus undoubtedly is going to
have a quite varried diet available to them, this is also something to consider.
Not necessarily seriously...

Speaking of weathering the storm, I've finally heard news of Bob

It's occurred to me that we don't know how many
sparks Othar has killed, or even that he has killed
anyone, yet.
Klaus wants him dead, as painfully as possible.
That suggests to me that Othar has taken lives.

I'm not saying he's right. My point is that he isn't a sociopath
or 'evil'. He even changed his approach to Agatha when he found out
who she was. Which is odd in and of itself considering he plans on
destroying himself when all the 'evil' sparks have been destroyed. So
does this mean he counts himself among the bad guys but not Agatha? If
so why?
Oh and one more thing. If you were going to try to kill an evil spark
would YOU allow them a chance to defend themselves?

Proving he's not very good at it. <wry grin> But it does follow along
with his ideals of a hero: a hero fights fair (although I haven't
forgiven him yet for the Hangman Incident), announces himself to his
adversary, and genreally gives his foe a chance. He wouldn't be heroic
otherwise!

He is a fanatic, and certainly insane. We saw the way he reacted when
Agatha told him she was a spark. She had done nothing at all to show
herself to be a threat or evil in any way, but he still tried to shoot
her, even before she pushed him out of the ship. That shows that he is
willing to kill innocent people, for something they couldn't change if
they wanted to.

And then he changes towards her because she's a Heterodyne. What in
Heaven's name has that to do with anything? He STILL knows nothing
about her, yet suddenly now she's good.

I don't care if he thinks he's right. Fanatics always think they're
right. What I care about is that he's willing to commit multiple
murders in an attempt to wipe out an entire sub-species of humanity,
simply because of the way they were born. That is evil.

This would be a good place to reiterate my theory that Othar is
actually a Revenant! @;D

He's nigh-indestructable, thinks he's a hero, and is on a Sacred
Mission to Kill All the Sparks in Europa Wulfenbach. Sounds like an
unwitting agent of The Other to me. Even the similarity in names is
sorta cute, in a homocidal kinda way ...

Klaus likes things in Europe nice and orderly... Othar's actions surely
lead to a lot of disorder. Othar taking out a mad spark leads to a power
struggle as other nearby ones fight for the now-vacant turf, for example.

Remembering what the Secret Blueprints say about Othar:

http://www.studiofoglio.com/girlgenius/secretblueprints/vol001/18.html

And the fact that he (Othar) appears to be completely effing
nuts, I am starting to wonder what connection (if any) Othar
and/or his insanity have to the destruction of Oslo.

Kinda comes down to four thoughts:

Did Othar destroy or actively aid those who destroyed the
city?

Was Othar trying to subdue some Spark with a Doomsday Device
and Othar just wasn't quite good enough and/or did things just
get out of hand?

Was Othar completely uninvolved with whatever happened, but he
managed to survive because he was a strong Spark?

Was Othar sane and/or a Spark before the Oslo incident?

Pick your favorite(s) and post your thoughts.

> Kinda comes down to four thoughts:

Actually, this, for me, presents a fifth option, towhit:

Othar is one of the few survivors of Oslo. (And what are the others
like, I wonder?)

According to common belief (as stated in the Secret Blueprints), the
events of the destruction of Oslo lead to his becoming a hero. Ergo
he was NOT a hero before Oslo was destroyed.

Was the destruction of Oslo intentional? That is, did someone set out
to destroy Oslo, or was that a side-effect?

Now, on to Blade's Wild Theory of the Week:

What if The Other baracaded the City of Oslo so that no one could come
or go -- perhaps during the winter, when few would notice a lack of
travellers? -- and experimented on the people. ALL the people.
Perhaps the object of the experiment was to learn What Makes a Spark?
Vivisection of, and experimentation on, both sparks and non-sparks --
maybe the Other actually learned the answer? Who knows? (Well, yes,
the Foglios do, but I'm not asking them, and they ain't telling yet.)

The few who were spared -- like Othar -- were remade into agents of
the Other. Perhaps Othar hates sparks so much because he can recall,
dimly, being a non-spark who hated and feared them?

So, we've got a small cadre of super engineered psuedo-sparks,
nigh-indestructable, sure of their own righteousness, and bent on
destroying all sparks ... perhaps at a density of one Hero per
continent? Is there someone like Othar in Asia? In the Americas?
'Cause, y'know, if they were any closer together than that, they might
meet, and start comparing notes ....

I once saw the ISS in an early-morning pass. I can't remember now
*why* I was awake and out in the garden at 6am...

I'm just a bit north of the extreme northern end of the orbit, so it's
never overhead, but it is sometimes fairly high in the sky. I saw this
lovely bright spark drift up from the horizon, then suddenly flare up
much brighter than Venus. The sunlight was reflecting off the solar
panels, something that you can't see in an evening pass because of the
way the panels are angled. Beautiful.
