arbara-
In your post of 11/22, you infer that
Yost Gingrich had multiple brothers. My research to
date has only identified one probable brother, i.e.,
Michael. I infer that Yost and Michael are brothers
becuase they both bought land from Michael Baughman on
the same day in 1747/48. My research indicates Yost
had five sons: John, Michael, Jacob, Peter, and
Christian; and that Michael had three sons: John, Michael,
and Peter. How does this compare with your
research?

Don

beneficial to post the books in my possession, if anyone
would like a lookup. Be patient, thought, on the

target=new>http://www.chartiers.com/raybell/1997-german.html

The
Raymond M. Bell Anthology

Looking up Your
German Ancestors

This article is concerned with
the German-speaking persons who came to Pennsylvania
between 1725 and 1775 from Germany, Switzerland, Austria
and Alsace (France). Some of them later moved on to
western Maryland and northern Virginia. (It is difficult
to list all the sources available, There are
increasing numbers of books and periodicals on both sides of
the Atlantic. There are excellent records at Salt
Lake City: Family History Library, Genealogical
Society of Utah. And now the internet: An adequate
account takes many pages, This is an outline of what can
be done.) It is interesting to note that these
emigrants spoke "Pennsyvania Dutch" - a Palatinate dialect.
The language has never been recoznized officially and
is still in use today.
First, you need to know
how your family name was spelled in the old country.
Names were spoken, but not always written the same.
Some German surnames have as many as 20 different
spellings in American records.
1) Some names were not
changed: Geiger, Seibert, Wolf, Ensminger.
2) Others
were anglicized: Wotring to Woodring, Hujet to Hewitt,
Ihli to Ely, Gotz to Gates, Eschbach to Ashbrook,
Dinges to Dennis, Schweinhardt to Swihart.
3) Some
were translated: Jaeger became Hunter, Zimmerman
became Carpenter, Yearick became George.

Then
remember that the call name is German was the second name.
Men were baptized with John as a first name, women
with Anna or Mary as a first name. John Henry Simler
was Henry Simler, and an English clerk may have
listed it as John H Simler. Anna Margaret Wolf was
Margaret Wolf. Mary Magdalena Seibert was Magdalena
Seibert, and so on.

If you do not know where in
Pennsylvania your ancestor lived, you may have to consult the
printed Pennsylvania Archives, Series 3 and 5, and the
federal censuses every 10 years beginning in 1790. They
are indexed through 1870. You need to find out, if
possible, where your ancestor lived before he came to
America. You may be fortunate to find it on a tombstone,
in a church record, or court or family record. If
you know the name of the village, there are good maps
and alphabetical lists of villages in the volumes
written by C M Hall, The Atlantic bridge (Everton
Publishers, Logan UT). Remember that families traveled in
groups. You may need to look up your ancestor's neighbors
in this country. Maybe the place of origin is listed
for one of them. Otherwise, you are at a loss unless
the surname is rare and limited to a small area.
However there is hope, numerous books and periodicals (e
g Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine) list names of
persons who are shown in German records as "gone to
Pennsylvania".

i Group--after observing a few days, thought I'd
add my family info.
My Gingerich line goes back to
Jakob Guengerich (1778-1828), from near Freienhagen,
Hesse, Germany. His family came from Switzerland to
Germany in the early 1700's. He was married to Catherine
Schlabach. Their son Jakob (my g-g-grandfather) was born 3
Aug 1811, Waldek, Germany, and emigrated to the USA
in 1831. He was married to Barbara Miller, daughter
of Bishop Benedict Miller. My father's family is
mostly O.O. Amish, althhough my parents are now members
of the Mennonite Church. Therefore, it appears that
my ancestry separates at quite some early date from
the rest of this group--it would be interesting to
find the common connection.
I have been in contact
with some Guengerich's remaining in the Waldek,
Germany, area, as well as in the Canton Bern, Switzerland,
area. The Swiss Guengerich's state that the family came
to Switzerland in the 1400's as religious refugees
from Bohemia. According to these folks, our distant
ancestors were followers of Johannes Huss, and didn't
relish being burned at the stake. Quite a number of the
Hussites sought refuge in Switzerland in the 15th Century,
according to history books I've read.
I have quite a
number of genealogy publications--mostly relating to
Amish-Mennonite history and genealogy. I'll send the list of
books on another posting.
Best wishes to

am stopped in my research because I can't find
anything about my gr-grandfather. I know he was born in
Pennsylvania and that his father's name started with a F but I
cannot read the writing on his death certificate. His
mother's name is listed as Anna or Annie St?ar or St?rr.
He was born May 23, 1847 and his name was Charles
(again I can't read the middle initial it looks like a T
or J). Sometimes my mother referred to him as Jerome
so I figure it was a J. He died in Colorado Sept 30,
1911 and his occupation was listed as Ranchman. So far
I have figured out he had two daughters besides my
grandmother, Georgie May, born in Pueblo, Colorado May 11,
1888. The other two daughters were Minnie Maud and
Alfaretta Pearl. These two daughters were born in Ashley,
Illinois. Minnie Maud born Christmas 187? and Alfaretta,
Feb 13, 1881. One of these girls married a Koontz and
had two daughters, Florence May born Sept 17, 1907
and Dorothy born 1911.

Charles married

guess I'll start off. This is the line Claude

with John b. 1745. It seems to me that we must connect
to the original Yost Gingrich, either through one of
his sons or one of his brothers. The problem is which
one. *smile* It's not Christian, son of Yost, and I
don't think it's Michael, son of Yost. Now. Where does
that leave us? We need some on-site research in
