Just as a reminder, the deadline for the 2099UGR: 100 Words challenge is
December 20th. The actual time and time zone of the deadline will be kind of
vague, because I won't mind terribly if entries show up a bit early or a bit
late. But there are still a few days left.
Once again, there are only a couple of rules for submissions: they have to be
set in the Marvel 2099 universe (and preferably something that could be used in
2099 UnderGround Revised), and they have to be 100 words each, no more, no less.
Yes, story titles and credits are exempt from the word count.
So far we've received an amazing number of stories, some from longtime 2099UGR
writers, and a few from some newcomers -- in fact, the 2099UGR: 100 Words
special will feature the debut of a new writer to this community.
If you're interested in contributing a story, there's only a few days left, so
now's the time. Entries should be e-mailed to ellistouch[at]yahoo[dot]com by
December 20th.

Decades from now, major corporations like Alchemax, Stark-Fujikawa, Synthia,
Roxxon, and D//Monix steadily develop the world's major cities into utopias ...
or at least, what they'd like people to believe are utopias. In truth, the
wealthy live in luxury while the poor are treated as second-class citizens.
Police protection must be subscribed to. The legends of old are overwritten by
corporate logos. Media saturation erodes any last remaining individuality among
the people, who now number well over nine billion.
In short, heroes are needed more than ever.
In 2099, a handful of such heroes emerged to usher in the Second Heroic Age,
forever changing the world's corporate landscape. Heroes named Spider-Man.
Ravage. Hulk. The Punisher. Ghost Rider. The X-Men. Doom. Or perhaps a better
term would be "anti-heroes".
Now, it's 2100. Some have died. Some have ascended to positions of even greater
power. Will you be one of them?
2099 UnderGround RPG is a forum-based RPG based on the Marvel 2099 line of
comics from the '90s. Characters claimed already include:
Spider-Man 2099
Ravage 2099
Moon Knight 2099
Blade 2099
Strange 2099
There are still more available for play. And an entire future to explore.
http://2099rpg.proboards.com/index.cgi
We at the 2099 UnderGround Revised would like to issue the following challenge:
If you've ever wanted to write a story for 2099UGR, now's the time. And you may
submit as many stories as you want. But there's a catch: each story must be 100
words in length -- no more, no less. But beyond that, the sky's the limit.
For instance, here's an example of a Daredevil 2099UGR story from the "2099: New
Year's Eve Special", told in 100 words:
_____
Daredevil 2099
"Silent Night"
Written by David Ellis
The entire building shook from the explosion.
It was a flesh mall, a fancy name for a white slavery ring that kept hundreds of
huddled humans and mutants and dressed them up like dolls. It was a
poshly-decorated building that claimed to be a brothel but refused its employees
any choice, pay, kindness, or hope.
On Christmas Eve, it was cracked open like an eggshell by a black-clad figure
who bore horns like the devil and an interlocking "DD" design.
The devil, their savior, didn't say a word; he just led the stunned captives out
of the building toward freedom.
_____
Selected 100-word entries will appear in an upcoming anthology one-shot called
"2099UGR: 100 Words". The deadline is December 20th, 2009. So far we're planning
to include stories about such established 2099 stalwarts as Spider-Man, Doom,
and Hulk, and newcomers like the Runaways of 2099. But why stop there? There are
so many characters and concepts to create and explore, and all it takes is a
commitment of 100 words. Choose them well.

First, Litany Kirkpatrick comes to terms with the consequences of her actions in

to recovery, and we're given glimpses of a week in her life. How does she begin
to move forward and heal both physically and psychologically? What restrictions
have the Bone Machine placed upon her in order for her to become a better
technomancer? And can Jason McDonald really tell it all in a ten
one-hundred-word scenes?

Editor-in-Chief, 2099UGR
http://2099.alteredvisions.org/
The other night in a Heroes chat room, the question of what the community was missing came up. After thinking about it for a day, I came up with my answer; awareness. It's really frickin' hard to keep up with all of the titles coming out, and it's even harder when new series keep popping up every week. So, as part of my effort to raise awareness for the new titles being released, I bring to you Ground Floor Reviews - a series of articles in which I review the first issue of new fanfic titles. For the first installment, we'll take a look at a new series from a site that is near and dear to my own heart.
What happened: The adamantium-encased Ravage is found by a trio of alien scientists following his exile from earth. Seeing him as the solution to their problems with the mysterious Hath-Seth, the scientists - under the command of the calm and detached Dr. Tewantin - decide to augment Ravage's already savage features to better suit his proposed role in their struggle. Ravage wakes up in his unfamiliar body, and understandably starts to lose his sh!t. Taking a second to calm himself, Ravage is stumbled upon by Hath-Seth's minions, who decide to bring their prize to their master.
Review: Right off the bat, this issue makes the effort to get the reader up to speed. Even if you've never read Ravage 2099 (and many of you most likely haven't, I'd guess), Maarten makes the effort to explain Ravage's recent, relevant history in the form of a journal entry by Dusk, one of Dr. Tewantin's assistants. Throughout the rest of the issue, Ravage recalls the events leading up to his current situation in fits and spurts, making for an effective and interesting portrait of a bewildered man trying to make sense of an alien situation.
Maarten makes the interesting choice to go with first-person narration for the majority of the issue - with the exception of the journal entry, the entire issue is written this way. This can be a hindrance to certain elements of a story, but Maarten uses it to good effect here. This issue is about getting us into Ravage's frame of mind, and the disjointed sentences and short, straightforward paragraphs ease us into his confusion painlessly and naturally. The narration choice may lead to trouble down the line in the series if we ever need to focus on a character other than Ravage, but for this first issue, it has a very positive effect on the experience.
I was mostly pleased at the attention to detail Maarten employed in this issue - each of the changes to Ravage's physiology are explained in the same short, straightforward sentences that help us understand Ravage's motivation. He also throws in small details of Ravage's history at appropriate places - whenever Ravage finds himself with a second to think about his situation, a little more of his story is revealed to new readers. By the same token, there are some areas where a little more diligence could have been applied to description - I have no idea what Dr. Tewantin and his assistants look like - they don't get descriptions beyond "male" and "female," nor do I have any idea what Hath-Seth's minions looks like.
Aside from that, I feel I only need to comment on one more thing - this issue is SHORT. At less than 2,500 words, the issue doesn't take long at all to read. It seems like it's all over by the time it should just be getting started. As I said, a little more detail on the characters would have helped round out the issue a little more and make it a more robust read. But hey, don't let any of that discourage you from checking the issue out - this is a very strong debut issue for Maarten Bouw, packed with a cool new direction for a character that has traditionally had a terminal lack thereof. Definitely recommended.

Everyone welcome Maarten Bouw (mgbouw) to the group!
Maarten (also known as Abe on the 2099UG message board) is the writer
for the six-issue Ravage 2099UGR mini-series, coming in September.
Yes, for those who aren't aware (and are still with us), 2099UGR will
be relaunching in September as an imprint of Altered Visions at
http://www.alteredvisions.org .
Also among the relaunch titles are X-Men 2099UGR #7 by John Bush, and
Spider-Man 2099UGR #7 by me. John Bush is also writing Avengers 2099
starting with #0, but I doubt I'll release that series for another few
months, to keep from exhausting the supply all at once.
Also, 2099UGR Unlimited is in need of writers.
David Ellis
In addition to the call for an Assistant Editor, the
2099 UnderGround Revised is also looking for new
writers and new titles to fill its ranks.
Of the existing titles up for grabs:
2099UGR UNLIMITED
This anthology title is a perfect try-out for writers
new to 2099UGR. Stories can encompass any aspect of
the 2099/2100 era -- the further off the beaten path,
the better. Past stories have involved Metalscream,
Blade 2099, The Hand of 2099, a look at the life of a
Public Eye officer, and poor schlubs in Downtown. In
this futuristic sci-fi world, the possibilities are
... unlimited.
GHOST RIDER 2099UGR
Chris Munn's GR 2099UGR one-shot was a hard act to
follow, but the era's pre-eminent android anarchist is
just waiting for a writer to put his or her stamp on
the character's further adventures. And since all the
megacorps in Transverse City have abandoned the place
and its citizens, the city is even more of a
survival-of-the-orneriest wasteland than ever.
PUNISHER 2099UGR
Following the death of Jake Gallows, the original
Punisher of 2099, the Gene Doll known as Vendetta
Some concepts I'd like to see, either in 2099UGR
Unlimited or in their own titles (miniseries or
ongoing):
DUKE STRATOSPHERE
"In the cyberverse, there exists a royal court of
netgliders -- legends of great skill who have cracked
the uncrackable, accessed the inaccessible, programmed
the unprogrammable. Their names are spoken reverently
among 'gliders: The Word. Firelight. Shiva Blue.
Broken Haiku. Dot 33. On a program-contructed horse
rides the glider court's knight errant, Duke
Stratosphere." That caption heralded one of the more
interesting and original characters to be introduced
in the 2099 comics, The Duke is an elite cyberspace
hacker in an age when all of c-space is one big
MMORPG, a realm of its own.
AVENGERS 2099UGR
Forget the assemblage of heroes. Forget the roster of
the best and most popular. Forget the public
activities and the Fifth Avenue headquarters. This is
a covert group of unknowns inspired by "The Night of
Long Knives", the infamous public execution of 2099
(anti)heroes Punisher, Galahad, Metalscream, and Hulk.
Their goal: to avenge the murders of those and any
other heroes. To what lengths will they go to carry
out this mission?
HUNTERS 2099UGR
It doesn't have to go by that title, but a story or
series exploring the era's thriving bounty hunter
industry would be fascinating. After all, there are
plenty of superhuman beings in 2099 but relatively few
heroes; must just want to make a buck. Venture and
Risque in SPIDER-MAN 2099 were bounty hunters; so was
Chen before he became Blade 2099 in 2099UGR UNLIMITED.
RUNAWAYS 2099UGR
Once, it was called Xavier's School for Gifted
Youngsters. But after the end of the First Heroic Age,
the school estate was bought out by a corporation and
became the Alchemax School for Gifted Youngsters.
Rather than a training ground for mutants, it's an
elite school for geniuses who are groomed to become
the next generation of corporate leaders. Miguel
O'Hara (Spider-Man 2099) was once a student there, in
fact. But now, the current headmaster has been
murdered, and the six students believed to be
responsible have gone truant. Comprised of kids of
varying ages and backgrounds, this motley crew has to
use their ingenuity to stay at least one step ahead of
Alchemax School Security. Good thing they're innocent
of the murder charge .... right?
...and so on.
The above concepts are negotiable, of course, and
there are plenty more 2099 concepts and titles in
search of a writer. E-mail me and we'll talk.

Next on tap is 2099UGR Spotlight #3 - by David Ellis and Jason McDonald - in which Dave and I comment on David's very first Blade 2099UGR story first presented in the digital pages of 2099UGR Unlimited #1!
We compare Chen (The Blade 2099 incarnation) to the Eric
Brooks Blade of the present day, shed some light on the back history of this origin issue and discuss a little bit about where Dave's image of a 2099 version of Blade is inspired from, along with our usual goofball digressions and careening trains of thought.
And the original issue: 2099UGR Unlimited #1 feat. Blade 2099: http://members.tripod.com/wyzeguy79/2099un_01.html
And now, the not-so-good news:
EiC Dave Ellis and I discussed the state of the 2099UGR site, and we have come to the sorry conclusion that, in order to get everything back on track, site-wise (That means getting back
to meeting our issue deadlines and straightening out some of the archiving snafus on-site that have occurred as of late) that we'd need to take a hiatus of sorts. During the hiatus, there'd be no issues being released. HOWEVER, we'd still be there behind the scenes, writing backlogs of issues for ourselves so that when we do begin our regular round of releases again, we're farther ahead this time and less likely to fall as behind as we have. So, since neither of us want this to happen again, that seems to be the best solution right now. Sorry to deliver the not-so-good news.
HOWEVER, not all is doom and gloom. Be on the lookout for Dave's exciting season finale of his powerhouse Fantastic Four 2099UGR series, Fantastic Four 2099UGR #12v2, coming out later this month.
And after the Hiatus (which will be at least three months long), we have some new proposals we are keeping close to the vest, so look for some new
surprises when we return as well as the same old 2099UGR goodness you all know and love! So, Fantastic Four later this month, and then we'll see you all in a few months' time with some amazing issues to knock your socks off! Until the next time, ladies and gents!

This is inspired by a recent news item on Newsarama:
http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=114490 .
Basically, 20th Century Fox and Franklin Mint
attempted to launch a promotional campaign for
"Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" by issuing
specially-made quarters with a Silver Surfer sticker
on them that could be spent as actual currency.
Except the US Mint was unhappy with this, and deemed
the practice illegal.
But it had me thinking: giving the megacorporate
nature of the 2099verse, I could see this kind of
thing eventually having become a standard practice at
some point (before the economy went to a
purely-electronic debit system). Maybe the megacorps
are still doing some variation of promotions like
this.
Thoughts?

Okay, now I'm confused. Why does it have to be a
secret? You're going to have a difficult time getting
a co-writer that way, because prospective writers
would have no idea what they're getting into.
