This appears as a separate slokam in 'saptaswaraalu (1969, MD: T.V.Raju)'.
But as every one knows, it is also part of 'kRshNaa mukumdaa muraari' from
SreepaanDuranga mahaatmyam. But if you have the track, you can make it out
from G's voice.

The other option is, one can put bulky files, whether they are
picture files, or .PDF-s, or .DOC-s, .... using the "Database" option

I have been forgetting to post a reply to the following earlier query:
> M: ??????????? S: niilOkamlO oka bhAgamidhi mAnavuDA dAri lEni

It is from: #rEpu needE# (1957), MD: Ghantasala, Lyrics by KonDamudi
gOparaaya Sarma (KG Sarma).
Coming to the latest list with unknown film titles:
> 1524. #OhO mEghasakhaa oka chOTa aagavO (gaa: ghanTasaala)#
As per SreeSree (see: #paaDavOyi bhaarateeyuDaa# book, p. 92) the
film
is dubbed from Tamil, directed by well-known kannaDa director/producer
B.R. Pantulu, with MGR in lead role. SreeSree also opined that this
beautiful song sung by Ghantasala may have never been released on
disk. Probably SriSri is wrong!? With the help of above information
we
'd be able to find out the title.

> ghanTasaala, pi.bi.Sreenivaas^, bRndam) (ra:) (si: bandipOTu

Probably from the later. I have the track of #bandipOTu bheemanna#
readily with me, but not the later. And in the first I am not able to
locate the above song. There IS a song by G which starts like this:
Dabbu Dabbu, but the text is completely different.

(gaa: ghanTasaala, bRndam)(si: iddaru monagaaLLu? dEvuDu gelichina

Its from the later. Year: 1967, MD: raajan^-naagEndra, Lyrics by C.
Narayana Reddy.
> 1533. #dOra dOra vayasicchaaDu dOchukOnu manasicchaaDu# (gaa:
ghanTasaala, pi. suSeela) (si: manchi - cheDu?)#
Yes, it is from manchi - cheDu, Lyrics by aatrEya
> 1537: kastoori tilakam lalaaTa phalakE (SlOkam) (gaa: ghanTasaala)
There are many possibilities!
1538 and 1539 are from #bheemaanjanEya yuddham# (1958) as you guessed.
Rest needs some digging work. Perhaps others can help!

Attached is a PDF file that contains a list of songs for which I do not know the movie names. To view the attachment one requires installation of pothana fonts, which are available at (http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/2627/index3.html) One can view this document on unix as well, but you will see some typographical errors. Please let me know if you are aware of the movie names.
(Note: Egroups says we can attach documents, so this is an experiment to email documents in telugu. Forgive me if accidentally you received junk instead.)

Thanks for reminding about this song! I have a long story to tell. But, that
at some other time.
The other language in the above song is: Bengali. Also, strictly speaking its
not Hindi, but "bhojpuri". And it has that 'unmistakable' stamp of C.
Narayana Reddy :-). He in fact wrote all the songs for that film; 9 in
number. The film was directed by K. Viswanath and the MD was T.V. Raaju. Its
picturized on NTR et al. The other singer is L.R. Eeswari. Or is it P.
Susila? I should hear my tape once.
Re: chenchulakshmi, thanks for the correction! I could play the audio of
film track, and find both those verses (one is actually the last stanza from
the song: #neela mEgha ghanaSyaama .....#). Both come almost at the very end
of the film.

Just heard a song from the movie "kalasivachchina adrushTam", which starts as "vandanAlu vandanAlu gaikonuDayyA andariki SatakOTi" with mAdhavapeddi starting the song. G sings in 4 languages in this song (Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, I do not which is the other one, but certainly not the other 3). Have any one heard this song? Any comments as to who wrote it etc?

As per the (good, old) song book of the above film the MD's name is, indeed,
Jandhyala. I don't have any other details about the person.
Thanks to Rajasekhar and Ramaprasad gaarlu for correcting the mistakes in my
earlier posting. I hope to play both those tracks (la.nivaasam &
chenchulakshmi) once I am at home.

This is from ' Sree rAmAnjanEya yuddham'. Music is by 'Jandyala'. I never heard of him before. Can some one throw light on this? Is it a print error by RPG (for Pendyala? - the ragaalaapana at the end is same as 'maanikya veena' from Mahakavi Kalidasu by Pendyala) or was there a music director with this name?
>>> Thank you very much for the information. I doubt very much the existence of a music director, with the name 'Jandyala'. It must be Pendyala. This is probably one of the many common typos/erros from HMV.
A small correction to what Mr. Srinivas has written.
"Its from: #Srii vEnkaTESwara maahaatmyam# (1960). Probably this verse
might have been used in some other films too, but certainly not in
#lakshmii nivaasam#. The first line goes like this: lakshmii nivaasa
niravadhya guNaika sindhO ....."
I have a video cassette of #lakshmii nivaasam# and I have seen it recently.
It has this verse and I clearly remember it because I like it so much in G's
voice ( you know, it has always been by others as a part of Sri Venkateswara
Suprabhatam). In the movie, SVR sings it in the poojagruham in an early
morning scene.

Yes. They are from #chenchulakshmi# (1958). The first is poem sung
for rElangi (I listed this padyam in the songs book) and the 2nd one

Dear Rajasekhar,
I have seen Santinivasam two/three years back on video and I clearly
remember at least one padyam "lavokintayu lEdu dhairyam".
May be interesting to note that the same padyam is in Santanam (1955)
also. ANR sings it when Relangi comes to know about the love letters
between ANR and Savitri. It is in a different tune and equally
excellent.
There are few other instances where one padyam has been used in
different movies with different tunes. Let me recollect and post them
soon. Others may help please!
I also remember there were some other padyams in Santinivasam, but I am
not sure how many and what their words are.
Reagdrs,

Thanks for pointing at them! In fact, I wouldn't have known about the
existance of verse A. Its some time in 1987 I saw the movie and remember very
little. So, I can't say whether that version contained those 4 verses or not.
But, I do have three of the above 4 verses (b, c & d) on my tape, which ends
abruptly. In fact, I made a note on my inlay card "are there more?".

I am going to list the 7 verses from #bhakta pOtana# (1966) that I have. But,
I do know that theres at least one more from Ghantasala, which I am badly
searching. Perhaps there are more. So, if you have any other G's verses than
these 7, please inform. Thanks in advance!
1. ghana yamunaa nadii kallOla ghOsha - (raagam) pahaaDi
2. sarvaj~na naamadhEyamu - bEgaDa
3. kuLLaayinchiti - bilahari
4. deenaaraTankaala teerthamaaDinchiti - kharaharapriya
5. jananaadhOttama dEvaraaya - SankaraabharaNam
6. jOTii bhaaratii - kaanaDa
7. kaviraaju kamThambu kaugilinchenu kadaa - dhanyaasi
[There is one on #kaaSee viSwESwaruDu#
Aside, PB Srinivas' renderings of pOtana's verses in the same film
is really great!
I listed all the songs and (8) verses from #chintaamaNi# earlier. See:
http://www.egroups.com/messages/ghantasa/48
From a song book I understand that there are 14 verses in #paadukaa
paTTaabhishEkam# (1966, MD: ghanTasaala). I don't know how many were sung by
PBS and howmany by G. I just have one 78rpm disk which contains the following
verses. any Additional informational is highly appreciated.
1. paalinchitini - PBS
2. suguNaabhiraamuni - PBS
3. raamayanu divyanaamamu niyamambuna - G
4. saarwabhaumulaina sarvaj~nulainanu - G
5. charitaarthuDaina bharatuDu - G
Has any one seen a complete, good video print of #chintaamaNi#? And does a
copy of #paadukaa paTTaabhishEkam# exist at all?
Thanks in advance!

It has been quite some time since I posted an article. Just thought of starting a discussion. Recently was going through some cassettes that I obtained on my last trip to India, the most surprising thing was 4 padyams from the movie Santinivasam. I was told these are edited/removed even from the movie. The 4 poems are supposed to have been sung by G for ANR in the movie when rajasulochana comes home with him the first time. Have anyone heard these padyams:
Here they are:
lavokintayu lEdu dhairyam
rAdha idi yukti kadu .. magani praaNambu
nindukoluvanakeedchi .. kaliki droupadi
dhuSTadaanava
Also found 7 poems from bhaktapotana, 8 from chintamani, 5 from padhukapattabhishekam.
Last night I could refer to the song book and audio track of the above film.
There are 7 songs in the films, and 2 are missing in my collection, one of
these two is Rafi's number. But, I am right in saying that the title song,
written by SriSri was sung by ghanTasaala et al. Here is the complete track
information:
Ti: padanDi munduku (1962)
Banner: jaagRti chitra
Music: S.P. kOdanDapaaNi
Dir: V. Madhusudhana Rao
Songs:
1. padanDi munduku - G, Madhavapeddi Satyam, A.P. Komala & chorus - SriSri
2. musi musi navvulu - S. Janaki - C. Narayana Reddy
3. mElukO saagipO - G, Madhavapeddi & cho. - daaSaradhi
4. taamaashaa dEkhO - piThaapuram - aarudra
5. manasu manchidi - G, P. Susila - aatrEya
6. manasicchina nacchina - S. Janaki - aarudra
7. manchiki kaalam teerindi - Mohammad Rafi - jaggayya
When it came to their own productions many (if not all) leading stars of
yester years tried to produce "different" kind of films. Recall NTR's first
two films: "picchi pullayya" (1953) & "tODu dongalu" (54), ANR's
"suDigunDaalu", jaggayya's "padanDi munduku", Savitri's "chinnaari manasulu"
(1968, title may be slightly wrong! The film was made by an all-women
team!!), etc. etc. Don't forget to add the names: G. Varalakshmi & Ramesh
Naidu. Isn't it interesting? Well, none of them had success at box-office.
Regards,
Sreenivas
The following report with the title: Subsidy #pondina toli-chitram# @
http://www.niharonline.com/telugu/enter_oldgold.htm
says that Rafi sang a song for the film: #padanDi munduku# (1962). I can't
recall any Rafi number from this film. The above report also says that its
penned by SriSri. If my memory serves me right, SriSri penned only the title
song: #padanDi munduku#, and it was sung by Ghantasala.
Any comments?
Aside: I always thought that Rafi's 1st song in Telugu was from naagayya's
own production: #bhakta raamadaasu# (1963, a film whose production ran for
over 6 years.).

Sreenivas

Well, I have *never* visited any site with audio files, because I can't play any audio files on my computer. But, as we all know from the experiences of Raja(sekhar Velamuri), who has maintained an excellant site dedicated to G, that people have downloaded songs from his site and started displaying at their sites. Obviously he was disappointed and closed his site. Till then, he was regularly updating his page with care(/taste)ful selection of songs, which included many rare numbers.
I guess that most sites that feature music in the latest Realaudio format have a block against the files being
downloded. Actually this feature should persuade Sree Raja velamuri to re-open his site. Of course,
such a block wouldn't prevent the unscrupulous to record the audio output and reconvert it into a
computer file again! Sites are beginning to pop up that have the old music as MP3 files which are
downloadable (though many sites are quite temporary). One site that has a few G songs in MP3

Thanks to Rajasekhar for informing about this great collection! Probably the
best compilation ever to come out in Telugu. Also, if I am not mistaken, its
the first project done by VAK Rangarao after a gap of 10-11 years. We are
really fortunate that two really knowledgable people did the compilation.
As a matter of fact, I haven't seen the set yet! But from RPG's website:
www.saregama.com I could find the following list of songs.
And that information is enough for me to consider it as the best.
Two reasons, why this collection is so special:
1. Unlike in Tamil and Hindi very little to nothing is available from
pre-50s. What we have in the market is: a set of 4 tapes under the title:
#"alanaaTi andaalu" (bhaanumati, baalasaraswati, sooryakumaari, kannaamba &
naagayya#) from 1987-88, one L.P under the same title as above from '78 and
another L.P featuring pre-1950 songs of Ghantasala.
All these 6 were visualized by VAK Rangarao. So, for the first time we have
3 CDs exclusively dedicated to music of pre-50s.
2. The compilers tried to select songs that are hitherto not available
on pre-recorded tapes. At the same time they didn't choose any obscure songs
that are only of interest to some collectors and die-hard vintage music
fans. They also did pay good attention to quality of the song. A good
balance was struck!
If some one has heard these CDs, I would appreciate a comment on the
recording quality.
Thanks in advance!

Sreenivas

Its to inform all that the old list (ghantasa) archives are still available at:
http://smartcad.me.wisc.edu/~ratnakar/ghantasa/
Thanks to Prasad (Chodavarapu), it is taken care that the above archives are
now backed up! So, even if the above site were to disappear in coming
weeks/months, we 'd have a copy of the entire archives. I 'll inform you the
new URL soon.
Regards,
Sreenivas
Good to see the list being reestablished.
Received the following recently from Sri Rajasekhar Velamuri:

Just would like to inform you both that RPG came out with a 8 CD pack
called Millenium Collection. Has some very old songs. The series was
credited to the compilation by Sri VAK Ranga Rao garu and Nemani
Seetharam. I got only one new (not known to me) song for ghanTasAla, a
song from yOgi vEmana, sung with M.V. rAjamma, "AparAni tApamayerA" .
Another song I heard for the first time is the song, "prEmayE janana
maraNa leela" from Ahuti. The one thing that I would like to mention is
that in the first three CD's of the 8 pack a total of
nearly 150 minutes were songs verses from movies dating 1936 to 1950
sung by Nagaiah, Gaggiah, MS Rama Rao, kamala chandrababu, pushpavalli,
bezawada rajaratnam, Rishyendramani to name a few.
BTW, RPG also came up with a five CD set titled Legends with songs by
GhanTasAla, and is coming up with a CD, with songs of NTR and Savitri
movies, and another CD with songs by sAluri, (I am not clear at this
time if the songs are sung by or only music directed by sAluri).

This message was followed by the following additional information:
----
The millenium set is currently available at Vista India
(www.vistaindia.com)
Ask for Sankar. It is going at $71.92, for pack, and the sad thing is we
can not buy single CD's ( I would never bought vol.8 if that was the
case). Another site where we can get the CD's are www.telugufm.com
In addition to the song I mentioned in my first email, there is also one
more chorus song which I never heard. It is from the movie, "rAmadAsu"
(1964) "idigO bhardrAdhri gowtami idigO chUDanDi" with PBS, Mallik and
AP Komala, music is by aswaththama.

Thanks to Sri Rajaskehar for this information.

namastE!
And, thank you Sreenivas for reviving this dormant list. Let us hope
that this new incarnation will be alive, vigorous and grow according
to the idiom, #mooDu puvvulu aaru kaayalu#.
I am hoping to get reacquainted with a bunch of old friends and also
to make sevral new friends who share my love of the voice and music
of #Sree GhanTasaala#.
Regards,

First of all a very hearty welcome to all!
Hope all the past members of the list could get my/egroups' invitation,
and subscribe without any difficulties.
As you know, there wasn't much action on the list in the past 1-1.5 years.
But, I hope that it would change in near future, for I have some exciting
information to share. Thanks to technology, many die-hard fans of G are now
on-line, and are eagerly waiting to share their ideas, experiences with
person G, and their collections. Wait for some pleasant surprises in coming
days.
Hoping to see an active participation from members this time :-)
Regards,
Sreenivas
