Film: Fierce Grace by Ram Dass

A Film by Mickey Lemle

Harvard professors Richard Alpert and Timothy Leary made counterculture history in 1963 when they were fired from that institution for conducting controversial psychedelic drug research. In the purple haze aftermath, Alpert journeyed to India and found his Guru Maharaj Ji, who renamed him Ram Dass (Servant of God). Best known for his 1971 best seller BE HERE NOW, which was a spiritual touchstone of the era, Baba Ram Dass became an inspiration to people across the globe. This film is his story and the tragedy of the stroke in 1997 that made him evermore aware.

NEW Film: Travellers and Magicians

Directed by the critically acclaimed Buddhist Lama Khyentse Norbu (The Cup), whose film making ability is insightful and provocative. This latest film, Travellers and Magicians, dramatizes the desire of many young Bhutanese to experience all things western in contemporary, but trying to remain traditional Bhutan. The story involves a young man who is determined to get to America to seek a new life with plenty of money and sexy women. During his journey thru the lush and dramatic Bhutanese countryside, he meets a monk who tells a clever, magical story that juxtaposes the dilemma of modern-day Bhutan. The actors are fresh, natural and heartwarming. A great 90 minutes entertainment.

An Evening of Magnificent Delights

On Saturday November 14th, please join us at Lumbini Indian Restaurant in lower Mount Vernon for a fantastic evening of delicious Indian vegetarian cuisine, delightful live music by Justice Mode and fun silent auction items from local businesses.

Lumbini, in current day Nepal, is the birthplace of Buddha. The owners named their restaurant in this way as an auspicious dedication for peace in the world.

Justice Mode is the jazz duo of classically trained pianist Henry Nam (piano, synthesizer, acoustic guitar) and Cesar Cartagena (saxophones, flute, latin percussion).

The goal with our second annual fund raising dinner is to raise $1750. You can help to double what we raised last year!

Your participation in this event will help Vikatadamshtri Buddhist Center to:

  • Repaint the back of the house
  • Finish replacement of the windows
  • Redecorate the ground floor public areas

Twenty-five percent of the proceeds will go to the International Temples Project, which is building temples dedicated to World Peace. Both Vikatadamshtri Center and the International Temples Project offer meaningful solutions for our troubled world.

The Evening’s Location and Events
Arrive at Lumbini Indian Restaurant, 322 N Charles St., starting at 5:30 pm to enjoy live musical entertainment. Then follows a short presentation about Kadampa Meditation Center-France, a beautiful development of the International Temples Project and a short speech on the future of Vikatadamshtri Center. Then will follow a buffet dinner and dessert with a door prize raffle and silent auction items for bidding. The evening ends with the silent auction conclusion.

  • Reduced price parking ($4) for restaurant patrons is available in the Franklin Garage at 15 W. Franklin St.

Ticket Prices
$37, $62 and $108

These prices are based on auspicious numbers in the Buddhist tradition and also offer you the opportunity to give at different levels of your choosing. Children 4 and under are free, 5 and older are $21. Those who purchase tickets at $62 get 2 free entries into the door prize raffle. Those who purchase tickets at $108 get 3 free entries.

  • The top prize is a free stay of up to one week from June 1st through November 1st at a vacation condominium in Vermont.
  • The second prize is a free attendance at any Vikatadamshtri Center workshop, day course or local weekend retreat.
  • The third prize is a guided meditation CD.

This will be an enjoyable event for family and friends. Please consider bringing people along with you! If you can’t attend consider making a donation of any ticket price so that we can reach or surpass the goal.

Subject: A wish comes true. Charter for Compassion unveiled to the world

Dear Global TED Community,

Today, TED Prize winner Karen Armstrong's wish is realized as the Charter for Compassion officially launches...

http://charterforcompassion.org/

This is a document created by thousands of people around the world. It is capable of enabling a new dialog between the major religions and between religious and nonreligious people.

Please take out two minutes to read it. It's just one page. If it speaks to you, please add your name.

Karen's wish was that TED should create and propagate the Charter. That's where we need your help. Email your friends, and do whatever you can on Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc.  We would love to see thousands affirm the Charter. It's truly an idea worth spreading.

Consider hosting your own compassion event. Or urge any religious leader you know to preach compassion this weekend.

An exciting day for us here at TED.

HUGE thanks to all who have worked to make this happen.

Our best,

Amy Novogratz

With President Obama in Asia at this time, visiting China, Singapore, Korea and Japan, we have a good opportunity to see something of how this country and this President look in the eyes of people overseas - people who, like ourselves, face the challenges and opportunities of the new century, but from very different and unfamiliar cultures, histories, mindsets, and interests.

Fortunately, most of these countries have a fairly lively English language press, usually with provision for reader opinion and feedback from around the world.  And Geotrees offers an English language press page, with links to a number of news services in all four lands.  We invite you to explore these services, and see how they might help illuminate our growing view of the world.

In addition to Japan, China, South Korea and Singapore, the World Press Page also has links to North Korean press outlets, Korean News and North Korea Books.  Of course, these are both official government organs.  But we feel that it's important to have access to a full spectrum of views, and thus to the information, knowledge and understanding that are only possible with such exposure.

The World Press Page has grown to include press links to those countries and peoples least familiar to and understood by the industrialized world, or "the West."  It is they who play an increasingly important role in human affairs, and often where the greatest challenges to human wellbeing, abundance, justice and peace exist - and where our need for knowledge and understanding may be greatest.

Geotrees' list is by no means complete.  Do you know of a newspaper, magazine, press service, broadcaster, blog or other English language source of merit?  If so, please let us know.  If we include them in the Press Page, we will be happy to credit you as source.

Geotrees is especially interested in how the world press is being engaged in the classroom.  We welcome any news you may have of such activity, and would be pleased to share it with others.

THE 30TH INTERFAITH CONCERT
Featuring five wonderful musical groups, including:

Kol Rinah Choir

Kol Rinah is Washington Hebrew Congregation's Volunteer Choir. It began in 1977 with ten members who enjoyed sharing their love of Jewish music with the congregation and who believed "he who sings prays twice."  The choir was given the name Kol Rinah - "Voice of Rejoicing."

In 1989, Cantor Mikhail Manevich became Kol Rinah's director.  Under his guidance, the choir grew and flourished.  Presently there are over thirty members.  The choir's repertoire includes close to 200 musical pieces that include Shabbat Melodies, Classical Reform, Israeli, Yiddish, Russian, Chassidic, Sephardic, Ladino, Jazz and those by WHC and Kol Rinah's in house composer, Bob Nath.  The music covers every facet of Jewish life:  Torah, love, life cycles, holidays and most fervent of Jewish hopes - peace.

Subject: 11/22/09 Café Philo DC: "Is Passion Compatible with Wisdom?"
To: undisclosed-recipients:;

Greetings:

The next meeting of Café Philo DC will convene this Sunday, November 22, 2009 at Reiter's Book Store, 1990 K St., NW, Washington, DC from 1pm to 3pm.  (Keep in mind that store entrance is located on 20th St. and that it is accessible from both the Farragut West Blue Line and Farragut North Red Line Metro stations.)  Hewitt Rose will moderate.

The topic, "Is Passion Compatible with Wisdom?", speaks to both epistemological concerns ('intellectual' vs. 'emotional' knowledge) and metaphysical problems (e.g., what is the relation of the reality of heart and head?)  Layered on top of these quandaries are social/political philosophical questions, e.g., what is the nature of collective understanding and meaning, and how do cognition and emotion -- and their relationship -- influence, sustain and justify our beliefs, values and behavior, both as individuals and as groups?

I will forward soon some suggested (optional) background readings on the topic.  As usual, please take a look at our affiliated Yahoo discussion list, Café Philo DC Dialogue, at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cafephilodcdialogue, for possible exchanges on this topic and where you may post your own thoughts as well.

For those planning to attend the discussion and participate in selecting the subsequent topic, here are some recent runners-up to consider:

o     What is the appeal of the apocalypse?

o     Is it ever reasonable to be irrational?

o     Is abortion homicide?

o     Is torture ever justifiable?

Best regards,

Ken Feldman
Founder, Café Philo DC

Subject: Next Nation Magazine Discussion Group Meeting. on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 from 3-5 PM on social responsibility
Date: Sun, 15 Nov 2009 11:35:02 -0500

Dear Nation Magazine Discussion Group:

What does it mean to take responsibility for one's actions and those of the society in which we live our embedded lives?   What did Ellsberg and Nixon understand differently?   And what if the UN's Goldstone report on the Gaza massacre is not treated by the US as the "Pentagon Papers" when it was finally released?  Who was responsible for the Fort Hood shootings: the Islamic psychiatrist in the US military from a Palestinian background born in Arlington, VA who went to Virginia Tech; or the military supervisors of the shooter who didn't hold him accountable to professional standards when he was practicing psychiatry; or the military bureaucracy which did not let him disenroll when he was traumatized by being ordered to serve in Afghanistan?

Rabbi Arthur Waskow has an insightful blog on this topic entitled "After Ft. Hood: To Bigotry, No Sanction" (at the URL http://webmail.aol.com/28878/aol-1/en-us/Suite.aspx).   Is it more moral to kill for jihad, patriotic nationalism, or as a mercenary?   What is likely to come out in a criminal trial of Khalid Sheik Mohammed as the so-called "master-mind" of the 9/11 attacks that could put their behavior in a different context than if they were tried in a military court, or subjected to targeted assassination?

Since I tend to find metaphors for most issues in the medical care system, what do you think of the Stupak Amendment that was incorporated into the House health care reform bill with the support of the Catholic bishops by inserting the prohibition of abortion for any health plan that depends on public funding, jeopardizing the meaning of universal coverage?  (Cartoonist Wasserman in the Boston Globe not so humorously opined: "What's the message to women?  Either don't get pregnant... Or don't be poor" -- a new meaning for what "Pro-Choice" means (see Washington Post cartoon reprint on Nov. 14, 2009).  What is good policy vs. good politics vs. winning by any means necessary as we consciously or unconsciously follow orders, or embark on our own crusades to change the world one step or one policy, or one system at a time?

Thinking of historical examples, like Nazi Germany, remember Pastor Martin Niemoller's famous quote: "First they came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Communist.  Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Jew.  Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up, because I was Protestant.  Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me."  (see http://www.hoboes.com/FireBlade/Politics/niemoller/).

Finally, are there any personal decisions that you have made in your life on the basis of expediency that did not live up to the moral standards that you respect?

These are some of the questions to explore in the next meeting of our Nation Magazine Discussion Group on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 3-5 PM at the Cleveland Park Public Library, 3310 Connecticut Avenue, on the second floor.  Please look over the emails that were sent on October 30 and November 7, 2009 for recommended readings.   And feel free to invite anyone else interested in participating in this discussion.

Sincerely,
Bob Griss, Coordinator
Nation Magazine Discussion Group in DC

"Religion Builds Peace in the Holy Land"

Dr. Yehuda Stolov
Executive Director of the Interfaith Encounter Association

(Today)

Wednesday, November 18th
12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
at Rumi Forum
1150 17th Street NW, Suite 408  Washington, D.C. 20036

Religion is usually perceived as the biggest    obstacle for peace but once you question this assumption you will realize       that religion can and should be the strongest driving force for peace. The      Interfaith Encounter Association (IEA) works to promote genuine coexistence     and sustainable peace, through joint community building on the grassroots       level, using interactive interfaith dialogue as its vehicle. The a-political    and all-inclusive approach of the organization and its activities       continuously form the human infrastructure for peace in the Holy Land. In       its eight years of existence, the IEA have held more than 700 programs, with    thousands of participants - from across the political and religious spectra,    most of them encountering 'the other' for their first time. The IEA have        formed till now 31 on-going community-groups of interfaith encounter - from     the Upper Galilee to Eilat, including 4 Israeli-Palestinian groups, with        Palestinians from the West Bank. During 2008, IEA successfully organized 150    programs that included more than 4,000 participants, from all social    sectors. For its work the IEA has been recognized and awarded by: UNESCO,       the Immortal Chaplains Foundation, the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious      Understanding, Institute for Interreligious Studies, the World Movement for     Global Democracy and the Israeli Presidential Conference.

Yehuda Stolov is the executive director of the Interfaith Encounter     Association, an organization that strives to establish a framework for peace    in Israel and the Middle East by fostering mutual respect among individuals     and communities through interfaith dialogue. Dr. Stolov has lectured on the     role of religious dialogue in peace-building throughout the world, including    Jordan, Indonesia, Turkey, South Korea and Europe. In 2006, he was awarded      the Immortal Chaplains Foundation Prize for Humanity, which honors those who    "risked all to protect others of a different faith or ethnic origin." Among     other activities, Dr. Stolov was a member of the steering committee for the     United Nations Decade of Interreligious Dialogue and Cooperation for Peace.     He holds a B.S. and an M.Sc. in Physics and a Ph.D. from the Hebrew     University of Jerusalem.

Why Fund War While Our Cities Die?
a lecture by PHYLLIS BENNIS director of the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2009 | 7 P.M.

KELLEY LECTURE HALL

GOUCHER COLLEGE, TOWSON, MD

Bennis argues that while the federal government spends hundreds of billions of dollars on military operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other countries, beneficial U.S. domestic initiatives in education, social services, infrastructure, and the environment-including health care reform and the creation of "green jobs"-are being neglected or underfunded. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Max Obuszewski at mobuszewski@....

Sponsored by Goucher College's Peace Studies Program and Baltimore United for Peace and Justice Coalition

Wanna know why the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are so expensive? Here's one big reason: The U.S. military consumes 22 gallons of fuel per soldier, per day. And each gallon costs $45 or more to haul to the battlefield. Read more

The Office of the People’s Council (OPC) is a strong voice for the consumer in terms of energy conservation. Changes in OPC’s administration can have a direct impact on all District residents and it is important that we keep tabs on such changes.  In that light, you might wish to attend the roundtable noted below.

Subject: Public Roundtable: Nominee for the Office of the Peoples' Counsel - Friday, November 20, 2009 @ 1:30pm, Room 120, John A. Wilson Building
Importance: High

Dear Neighbor & Community Leaders,

Mayor Fenty was not re-nominating Elizabeth Noel as the Peoples' Counsel of the District of Columbia. This decision by Mayor Fenty will have immediate consequences for consumers in the District of Columbia.

Mayor Fenty without any public input has nominated Vicky A. Beasley to replace Ms. Noel as Peoples Counsel. Ms. Noel was never given the courtesy of a meeting with Mayor Fenty to discuss her re-nomination. Attached is the public resolution forwarded by Mayor Fenty to the DC City Council  nominating Ms. Beasley.

On Friday, November 20th at 1:30pm, in Room 120- John Wilson Building, the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs will hold a Public Roundtable on the Nomination of Vicky A. Beasley for Peoples' Counsel.  This nomination is being fast tracked to minimize public comments. We requested a full hearing and formal public notification and the request was denied.

The City Council needs to hear from residents about the importance of OPC and the selection of the Peoples' Counsel. This hearing is a forum to discuss: 1. Lack of a public process for selecting a nominee for Peoples' Counsel 2. Protecting the independence of the Office of the Peoples' Counsel 3. The important service OPC provides to consumers on utility issues.

The Office of the Peoples Counsel is the independent legal representative of DC consumers before the Public Service Commission, FCC, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and DC Court of Appeals. The strong independent voice of the OPC under has protected consumers against record rate increases, poor customer service, other abuses at the hand of Pepco, Verizon, and Washington Gas.

Many of you know first-hand the legal, and consumer education work done by the OPC. Their record of accomplishment and presence in the community is unparallel in the District government. It is no secret that the utility companies have made it a priority to block and prevent Ms. Noel from being re-appointed. A Pepco official openly stated, " I going to get her if it is the last thing I do. " The utility companies should not pick the Peoples' Counsel. Consumers deserve the most qualified representative as the Peoples' Counsel not just another mayoral appointee.

Register to testify and encourage others to attend the Public Roundtable.

Sincerely,

Herbert Harris, Jr.
Chairman
District of Columbia - Consumer Utility Board

Community Organizing/Community Service

v    UU Funding Program $$ for Community Organizing Training & Dues

Many Unitarian Universalist congregations (130 at last count) are finding Congregation-Based Community Organizing (CBCO) an excellent fit for raising our profile in our communities and working in interfaith, multiracial, cross-class coalitions that are making a difference locally, at the state level, and now nationally as well. The UUA and the UU Veatch Program are supporting congregational engagement in interfaith community organizing with staff support, resources, and funding. The UU Funding Program has $80,000 for matching membership dues and training grants for up to $5,000. Matching grants for trainings are awarded on a rolling basis. The deadline to apply for membership dues is September 15th! (And again on March 15th.)

For more information about both grants, see the UU Funding Program's application information sheet. Questions can be directed to Hillary Goodridge, UUFP Director and Susan Adams, UU Funding Program Grants Administrator at uufp@... or (617) 971-9600.

Environmental Concerns

v    UU Climate Change Campaign

Senators Boxer and Kerry introduced the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act of 2009 at the end of September. Climate change is a social justice issue, where the most marginalized communities are the first to feel its impacts. As a major contributor of greenhouse gases, the US must do its part to reduce emissions and change behaviors to reduce our environmental impact. If we wait until the wealthier nations are directly affected, it will be too late. Because of the moral urgency, the UUA, UU Ministry for Earth, UU Service Committee, UU United Nations Office, and UU State Advocacy Networks are launching a major climate change campaign, aimed at passing strong and just legislation. Look for information on how you can get involved on our Environmental Justice page (http://www.uua.org/socialjustice/issues/environmentaljustice/index.shtml

v    Help Pass the Employment Non Discrimination Act

Contact your House Representative and Senators today, and ask them to support the Employment Non Discrimination Act (ENDA)! It remains legal in 29 states to discriminate against employees based on sexual

orientation, and in 38 states to do so on the basis of gender identity. ENDA would protect bisexual, gay, lesbian and transgender Americans from workplace discrimination based on irrational prejudice. The bill includes exemptions for religious organizations, small businesses, and the military, and it does not require employers to provide domestic partnership benefits. ENDA simply makes it illegal to discriminate against workers because of who they are or who they love. Last June at General Assembly, hundreds of people called their elected officials

asking them to co-sponsor and vote for ENDA. We need to keep the pressure on! The House could vote on ENDA as early as this month, and our opponents will inevitably be attacking the bill on the unfounded basis of its hiring implications for religious organizations. Learn more about ENDA, and educate your congregation! Go to: http://www.uua.org/socialjustice/issues/bgltequality/employment/32253.shtml  for resources on hosting a call-in day or letter-writing table at your congregation. Print copies of our Issue Brief http://www.uua.org/documents/washingtonoffice/enda/issue_brief.pdf  to distribute. Please contact Orelia

Busch (obusch@...  202-393-2255 x12 for more information or to let us know what your congregation is doing. As people of faith, we need to take a strong public stand in support of ENDA’s measured and just approach to protecting both religious organizations and the LGBT community. Contact Congress today and tell them it’s time to pass ENDA! http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1272/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1565

v    Does Your Congregation Have an Addiction Ministry?—Others Are Looking for You

My name is Brandon Lillie and I am a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York. I am heading up the formation of an Addictions Ministry in our congregation. The move to start such ministries in a UU context is fairly new. Denis Meacham has written a book on the subject that is available through the UUA bookstore. Another leader on this front is the Rev. Alex Holt who is the facilitator for the task force assigned to establish Addictions Ministry recognition and formal support and guidance at the Association level. After having connected with leaders of the Harrisburg UU's Addiction Ministry and with Alex Holt's urging I find myself reaching out to other regional congregations to find out which of you are supporting such ministries or are interested in starting one. Please pass this information on to anyone that this might pertain to. Thank you so much for your attention to this matter. On a personal note I would like to say how much I enjoyed worshiping with All of you on this past Association Sunday in Lancaster. My family really enjoyed it. Happy October!

                                                                                                   hoping we are well met,

Housing

v    UUs Can Help Families Hit by Foreclosure

OpenDoor Housing Fund, successor to the Unitarian Universalist Affordable Housing Corporation, has been hard at work helping Capital area families keep a decent roof over their heads during the economic downturn.  Without a quick response from OpenDoor, 13 families at Randle Heights would have been forced out of their homes. In the spring of 2008, the residents of the apartment in S.E., DC, were shocked to learn that the developer had abandoned their project, leaving an incomplete renovation and a defaulted loan.  When the bank decided to foreclose on the property in September 2008, OpenDoor helped the Tenants Association gain bankruptcy protection and is continuing to work closely to refinance the project and find a new development team to complete the project. If you'd like more information about how to join the many UU congregations and families who make  safe, socially responsible, and interest-bearing investments in a local Community Development Funding Institution, contact Kathy Latulippe at 301 588 5533 or visit www.opendoorhousingfund.org    If your congregation does not have an institutional investment in OpenDoor, please consider making one.  Contact Kathy for UUA matching investment information.  The UU Interfaith Advisory Committee to the OpenDoor Housing Fund consists of UUs from congregations that have institutional investments in OpenDoor.

UU Church of Annapolis

333 Dubois Rd
Annapolis, MD 21401-2123

The date of the UULM-MD Annual Meeting has been changed to January 23, 2010.  This change was made since the pending federal action on climate change and health care reform made it unlikely that we would have a clear picture in November of potential legislation coming before the 2010 Maryland General Assembly on these two issues, which are priority issues for us. (We have also reserved the space for a "snow" date on January 30th.)

Sunday, November 22, 2009  *  5:06 PM  *  Metro Washington, DC
Moon-of-Fallen-Leaves

Most of America is preparing to observe Thanksgiving, but in recognition of that day (known as YANKSGIVING to some), of the history behind it and the history that continues to unfold in its wake, Mr. Jay Winter Nightwolf, outspoken American Indian spokesman, advocate, sachem and broadcasting host, and his posse are preparing their annual special broadcast for that day.

The broadcast will take three hours - 9:00 AM until 12:00 noon, Eastern US time - over WPFW FM 89.3, heard on the air in the Washington, DC region, and around the world by internet streaming from the station at this link:

                         http://www.wpfw.org

I invite you to listen, and to share this news with others - the need to get people educated and knowledgeable is as great as ever.  This broadcast will be valuable to all, and especially to teachers and others who share knowledge and wisdom, and to our young people, who will be guardians of this knowledge - and its lessons - for decades into the future.

Jay has other special broadcasts from time to time, in addition to his weekly program over WPFW.  He is also working on his annual fundraising and supplies drive in behalf of people on the bleak Rosebud and Pine Ridge reservations in South Dakota.

For details on these and other Nightwolf activities at any time; to read Jay's seasonal message; and to see his blog or to contact him personally, please visit the Apples 'n Oranges Intercultural Cafe on Geotrees.Com regularly at:

                  http://www.geotrees.com/cafe.html

Thanks for listening!  May next year's Yanksgiving find more for American Indians, and indeed, peaceloving peoples everywhere, to be thankful for.

In peace,

Happy Thanksgiving!

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let us remember the words of Dom Helder Camara (noted in the cartoon below) and Henri Nouwen - "This nation is affluent and has more than it needs. The realization that what we have is a free gift can deepen our desire to share this gift with others who cry out for help. When we bless the fruits of the harvest, let us at least realize that blessed fruits need to be shared."- from Nouwen's book The Genesee Diary.

SOA Watch - another inspiring weekend in Columbus, GA to close down the SOA.  If you have not heard, American Friends Service Committee has nominated Father Roy Bourgeois and SOA Watch for the Nobel Peace Prize for their sustained faithful nonviolent witness against the disappearances, torture, and murder of hundreds of thousands of civilians (peasants, community and union organizers, clerics, missionaries, educators, and health workers) by foreign military personnel trained by the U.S. military at U.S. taxpayer expense at the School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Inspiring Words

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and                                       find all the barriers within yourself that you have built                                       against it.

Connolly of                                        Virginia, Professor John Borelli from Georgetown University,                                    Professor Sidney Griffith from the Catholic University of                                       America, Maureen Fiedler, host of the Interfaith Voices                                 radio program on WAMU radio, and Ebru TV, a Turkish channel                                     aired in the US.

Congressman Connolly praised the activities of the Rumi                                 Forum, saying, "If there is something that I think is                                   important and that is represented by this forum tonight and                                     the work of the Rumi Forum, it is the ability it has to bind                                    us all in tolerance and understanding." Congressman Mike                                        McMahon of New York described the protocols signed between                                      Armenia and Turkey for the normalization of their diplomatic                                    ties and the opening of their border as historic.
Several attendees speaking at the award ceremony expressed                                      their support and admiration for the honorary president of                                      the Rumi Forum, Fethullah Gülen, a renowned Islamic scholar                                     advocating increased interfaith dialogue. "He is not only                                       working hard to teach us respect for one another but also                                       the necessity of learning more about one another," Professor                                    Griffith said of Gülen.

Rumi Forum Welcomes New President

www.rumiforum.org/48802FB4.jpg
In early September of this year the Rumi Forum welcomed its                                     new president, Emre Celik. Hailed from the land down under,                                     Mr. Celik is an Aussie native with Turkish roots.

Mr Celik was born in Izmir, Turkey while his family was                                 visiting Turkey from Australia. Mr. Celik received a degree                                     in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of                                  Technology, Sydney and then went on to receive a Masters                                        Degree in Teaching from the Charles Darwin University of                                        Australia.

Mr. Celik's involvement in community affairs encouraged him                                     to leave the field of engineering, becoming greatly involved                                    in educational and intercultural projects in the Australian                                     cities of Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

In 1996, Mr. Celik served on the Executive Committee that                                       established the first private college founded by the                                    Australian Turkish community. He has since worked on                                    numerous educational and community projects during his time                                     in the 3 eastern states of Australia.

Before arriving in the U.S., Mr. Celik was the General                                  Coordinator of the Australian Intercultural Society. AIS is                                     a non-profit, community based organization that is committed                                    to bringing together people of different backgrounds to help                                    improve understanding and respect and to build greater                                  community harmony. Since its founding in 2000, AIS has been                                     involved in many bridge building events that help to                                    overcome ignorance and prejudice. Amongst numerous other                                        projects, AIS established the first ever Fethullah Gulen                                        Chair at the Australian Catholic University. During his                                 tenure as General Coordinator, Mr. Celik was involved in two                                    ground breaking projects that brought together the Muslim                                       and Jewish communities of Melbourne, Building Bridges and                                       Embracing Youth, both sponsored by the Australian                                       government's Living in Harmony initiative. He also served as                                    a member of the Victoria Police Multi-Faith Council and was                                     involved in the preparation of the 2009 Parliament of World                                     Religions to be held in Melbourne.

Mr. Celik has spoken extensively on issues on peaceful                                  co-existence and intercultural dialogue and spoke at an                                 international conference in Oklahoma on the Contributions of                                    Australian Muslims to Dialogue

Since arriving in Washington, Mr. Celik has been busy                                   getting to know the Washington community at various events                                      and programs, namely the 2009 RUMI Peace and Dialogue Awards                                    held at Congress. He has also been traveling extensively                                        throughout the U.S., speaking to audiences about the                                    important work conducted by the Rumi Forum, specifically the                                    importance of bringing people and ideas together through                                        dialogue.

Gulen Conference at UMD

www.rumiforum.org/4429C7B0.jpg
The Rumi Forum of Maryland held the conference, Preventing                                      Violence and Achieving World Peace: The Contributions of the Gulen Movement, this October 29, 2009 at the University of                                 Maryland, College Park. The conference is co-sponsored by                                       Dept. of Anthropology ,The Rumi Club, Graduate Student                                  Government at the University of Maryland, College Park.                                 Several distinguished speakers including former ambassador,                                     US State Department official, academicians talked about the                                     contributions of the Gulen Movement to the World Peace.

The conference opened with a keynote speech by Dr. Ori Z.                                       Soltes from Georgetown University, titled, "Socrates,                                   Violence, Education, the Gulen Movement, and Peace". This                                       talk compared Socrates' aims to those of the Gulen Movement.                                    Dr. Soltes noted that like Gulen, Socrates emphasized                                   importance of ethics and the process of dialogue for brining                                    morality into all facets of life. Gulen emphasizes that                                 education is the ultimate means through which we can deduce                                     Divine will and thus improve the world. He noted that unlike                                    Socrates, the Gulen Movement has been able to put Gulen's                                       ideas into action through its varied educational programs,                                      media, cable, and internet programming. Moreover, the Gulen                                     movement seeks peace through constant effort and struggle,                                      and this is a "fullness of peace" that not merely tolerates,                                    but embraces diversity, and it cannot be described as merely                                    the absence of war.

The conference featured two panels, one titled "Preventing                                      Violence and Achieving World Peace" and the other, "The                                 Contributions of the Gulen Movement to World Peace." Dr.                                        John Davies from University of Maryland, College Park opened                                    the first panel by sharing findings from a comprehensive                                        research program that has identified societal factors which                                     strongly correlate with the likelihood or absence of                                    violence and wars within and among nations. The single best                                     indicator of a nation-state's likelihood of creating a                                  climate for war is the Infant Mortality Rate. Peter Kovach,                                     from the U.S. Department of State said that Rumi Forum in                                       Washington DC and Pacifica Institute at Los Angeles are one                                     of the most effective peace organizations that build bridges                                    between people from diverse backgrounds. Kovach shared with                                     the audience the Department of State's recent success in                                        collaboration with the Egyptian delegation in resolving                                 issues stemming from the Organization of Islamic Conference                                     regarding defamation of religions. Kovach presented the                                 issue as a free speech issue, noting that "One man's truth                                      is another's defamation," and that suppressing ideas never                                      succeeds in making them go away. Ambassador David Newton                                        shared his experience with Radio Free Iraq. He noted that                                       the internet has weakened control of authoritarian regimes;                                     they can no longer totally dominate the media. He stated                                        that the media is an empty vessel, and it can be filled with                                    tolerance or intolerance and incite violence or peace. Dr.                                      Imad-ad Dean Ahmad of the Minaret of Freedom Institute                                  wrapped up the session by emphasizing the critical                                      importance of education (as opposed to merely schooling) for                                    fomenting tolerance and peace. He observed that historically                                    Muslims went to madrasses to learn and understand the Qu'ran                                    (education). Today, madrasses teach memorization and correct                                    pronunciation (schooling). We need to move more towards                                 being educated about other cultures and about ways of                                   thinking in order to achieve greater tolerance.

The second panel shifted focus to a more complete                                       understanding of how the Gulen movement conceptualizes peace                                    and ways to achieve it. Dr Eileen Eppig of the College of                                       Notre Dame identified how Gulen's ideas regarding peace are                                     inspired by Sufism and the Holy Qu'ran. Human beings are                                        God's highest level of creation and He manifests His                                    qualities, His "names" through His creations. When we                                   recognize God's love within ourselves, then we can see it in                                    others and all of creation. This recognition brings about                                       actions that respect God's love in all of His creations and                                     leads to a state of compassion. Dr. Heon C. Kim of Temple                                       University continued with Dr. Eppig's themes by emphasizing                                     the Islamic perspective that places the highest value on                                        humanity, as opposed to fundamentalist beliefs which tend to                                    devalue humanity. Kim demonstrated that dialogic humanism is                                    the heart of Gulen's thought and gives the reason for the                                       existence of the Gulen movement - hizmet, service to                                    humanity as a solution to individual and collective                                     problems. Dr. William Taft Stuart of the University of                                  Maryland, College Park discussed the social capital that the                                    Gulen Movement brings to peace building, including its                                  educational activities, forum activities, and media outlets,                                    especially Zaman Newspaper. Dr. Pim Valkenberg was                                      positioned excellently as the final speaker. He emphasized                                      how the notion of peace is connected to religion. He stated                                     that Gulen's notion of peace is based on an analysis of                                 three roots of violence - ignorance, disunity, and poverty.                                     The Gulen movement activities address these three areas                                 through its schools, dialogue groups, and charity                                       organizations, such as Kimse Yok Mu. According to Gulen, for                                    a Muslim, peace cannot be separated from religion as a                                  Muslim desires, in his or her daily life to be at peace with                                    all of creation. For Gulen, it is not enough that Muslims                                       should feel safe, but that all humanity should feel safe.                                       Since passages of violence and peace can be found in all                                        fundamental scriptures (e.g. Judaic, Christian, Muslim),                                        what is important is the mindset that interprets the                                    scripture. Since Islam values peace above violence, then                                        peace is the key to understanding the Qu'ran. If we believe                                     that peace is better than violence, then we must be on the                                      side of peace. From this viewpoint, violence in religious                                       texts are interpreted as corresponding to specific                                      circumstances, and cannot be seen as a fundamental,                                     underlying premise!
