Subject: Web-based gen software solutions?

Hello all -

Just a brief introduction - I have been doing genealogy now for close to 10 years and have worked with a few different softwares in that time. I used PAF briefly when I first started out, but quickly switched to Sierra's Generations, which I used for many years. When I started researching in earnest again last year, I switched to Legacy and have been pretty happy with it. However, none of the programs I have tried, including web-based apps such as phpgedview, have produced web pages that I have liked, but more importantly, that were at all easy to keep updated. While I liked the idea of phpgedview, I found it difficult to enter info into, and if you are stuck in a courthouse or genealogical library without an internet connection, you have to go through the hassle of exporting everything to gedcom and then importing it into another program before you leave.

For me the ideal genealogy software would run locally, but synchronize with a web-based, main database (preferably hosted on my own web server). Wouldn't it be great to take your laptop on a research trip, enter a bunch of new information, and have that information uploaded as soon as you had an active internet connection? Or if you forgot to copy the latest version of your database to your laptop before you left, to have the ability to synchronize whenever you open the software? ...not to to mention the benefit of having your PHP, ASP, or whatever-based website updated automatically with your database. This way it wouldn't matter whether you entered stuff at your home PC, laptop, work PC (not that any of us would ever do that!) - as long as there was an internet connection, it would be able to automatically, or at least be prompted for,  synchronization.

Am I living in a dream world? Does anyone know whether anything like this is in development, or is this just something that is not commercially viable?

Regards,

Chris Staats

Synchronizing with a web-based database was one of my goals with GDBI.
It is a gedcom editor that updates PhpGedView data through its CGI
interface. It has an option to save a local copy of PGV records. I
never implemented synchronization of local edits, though. I have not
worked on it for a while, but it would be a good starting point. See
http://gdbi.sourceforge.net/

I can't help but think that what you are looking for is what is being developed by FamilySearch by the LDS Church.  They are starting to implement a New FamilySearch that will interact with your genealogy software program and NFS web-based product.  Legacy 7 and others are developing their products to interact with New FamilySearch when it is available to everyone. (end 2008) Things are still in the development stages but they are coming. So if you love Legacy just keep watching and it will come about.

Just a reminder of the genealogical software discussion forum on YahooGroups

In is a good place for

* discussing programs you are using, and how to get the best out of them
* discussing programs you would like to see
* discussing improvements you would like to see in existing programs
* collaborating in developing programs that are useful for genealogists
* reviewing genealogy software
* announcing and commenting on new versions and programs
* anything else to do with computer programs used for genealogy

When discussing general software, such as word processors, spreadsheets,
databases etc., it is best to stick to the genealogical uses of those programs
-- but sharing ideas on how they can be used for genealogy is good.

I don't know how your program works, but I've been using OneNote from
Microsoft. It's so awesome to be able to just send web pages, emails,
documents, screen shots, etc over to OneNote with a click of a button.
It's really easy to create new Notebooks and new Sections in each notebook.

When I first got the program I wasn't quite sure what to do with it although
I could see that it had possibilities. Then someone in our computer
interest group showed how she used it for her research and I've used it
constantly since!

I'm working at setting up a Legacy user group and I'm using it to organize
that as well as saving web pages that I find which will be helpful in my
research along with recipes, crochet patterns, travel itineraries, and
scrapbooking ideas!

Can't tell you how much OneNote costs if you buy it as a stand-alone but
mine came with my copy of Office 2007 Ultimate.

I've not seen that, but it sounds useful in a similar way to askSam, which I
use for making bnotes from books, and collecting notes from a variety of
sources. It's useful for putting information about people who may or may not
be related so that you can find them again if you find they are related.

Of course you can always make a note of that kind of thing on a piece of
paper when searching sources, but then remembering where you put that bit of
paper is often just as hard as remembering the original source.

Yup, those are all the sort of things askSam is good for too.

I don't know what the cost is - like I said, it was part of Office 2007
Ultimate (which my daughter-in-law got for me from the Microsoft store).
I'd suggest that you just check out pricing on some of the e-stores.

I have heard that OneNote 2007 is much better than OneNote 2003 -
specifically you can send things directly to OneNote in the 2007 version.
If "send to one note" doesn't show up in the right click list on what you're
viewing, a printer driver has been installed so you can "print" to that
program.

There is a free trial of the program on the MS website.

* reviewing genealogy software

When discussing general software, such as word processors, spreadsheets,

This is the siort of thing that is perhaps better discussed on the genealogy
software forum, and I shall copy this there.

Here is information about the Geenalogy Software forum in case anyone would
like to join in:

Most good genealogy programs do have an option to print HTML code for web
pages, but as you say it is fairly limited, and not easy to update.

Free web hosts out there will generally only let you have static pages, and
if you want to run things like PHPGedView you have to pay, thoguh there are
also sites like My Heritage that do let you update things and allow others to
do so, thoguh that seems to be in a proprietary format. I believe it is
possible to upload and download Gedcoms there.

I'm not all that interested in updating my genealogy on the web. I did,
several years ago, upload some family tree pages to my Geocities pages, but
Geocities was taken over by Yahoo, and it became very unreliable. At one time
it was down for two months, or at least my pages were, so I moved them to
another site, and updated it there, but did not move the family tree, which
by then was already out of date.

I see the main purpose in posting family tree information on the Web as not
being to have a complete family tree on the Web, but rather letting others
know what you have so that they can get in touch and you can share
information. If you put everything on the web, I've found that other people
just take it, and you don't even know who they are, and they often don't give
any of their information in return. My attitude is "I'll give you everything
I have if you give me everything you have".

I have, however, started a family wiki on a free publicly hosted service, but
so far most visitors have not bothered to make themselves known or
contributed anything, even though it is quite easy to contribute to a wiki.

* reviewing genealogy software

I once used a program, I think it was Brother's Keeper, that could produce a
report showing the links between a single ancestor and a single descendant.

This was produced as a text file that could be imported into an e-mail or or
news message.

Legacy does a similar report, but it has graphics and fancy formatting, and
can only be exported as a graphics file.

Is there any way of producing a text report in Legacy, other than printing it
out and then retyping it all?

Are there any other programs that can produce such reports?

Or will I have to reinstall Brothers Keeper 5 and GEDCOM my data across?

One solution is to install the Generic-Text only printer driver and
select FILE: as the port.

After you "print" the report to this printer, you will be promted for
the file location/name. When done, you can edit the file, or copy and
paste the text to something else. Adjusting your report parameters will
reduce the amount of editing.

Why can't you save it to pdf and sent the pdf attachment? Of course, you'd
have to have the Deluxe edition to do that.

Someone on the newsgroup gave me the answer -- use the relationship
calculator (which doesn't appear in the reports menu, but under Tools, I
think). It has the option of text output, which can then be edited in a word
processor.
