Just a reminder that most graphics software included with
scanners and other hardware is usually the LE or "light" edition.
These LE versions are limited in their capablities and have reduce
features over their full versions that cost much more.

Jerry,
perhaps I should make that a future poll. If you will send me your
suggestions of favorite organizers, I will create a poll from the list.
Send suggestions to editor@...

I just print my photos from Picture Publisher. I haven't tried printing
from the Adobe PhotoDeluxe software that came with my camera yet. PP is a
originally PhotoShop clone (uses some of the same access keys on menus),
but it takes a different approach to layers. It has full CYMK control over
printing, and has all the color matching system that PS has, sometimes that
orientation can be irritating when creating an image for the web. But I
never really use all the bells and whistles.

I have a an Olympus D340R, which I purchased until some of the 2m pixel
cameras either come down in price or offer more features at the current
price level. We recently replaced our inkjet with a laser printer, so I
will not be making any color prints for a while. I will be shopping in
future for a better inkjet, probably an Epson. I'd like any advice or
experience with Epson printers, especially the art quality ones.

I voted for Genealogy Software, but notice that many voted for Photo
Organizing Software. I'd be interested in hearing about these. I have
recently bought a Sony Mavica Digital Camera, and have not yet decided how to
handle my photos. So far they are still on floppies. Also could use tips on
printing...what's the best software?

Featured Book

I've updated the bookstore homepage today, and the feature book is
_Fashions and Costumes from Godey's Lady's Book_, a compilation of fashions
seen in the popular nineteenth-century woman's magazine Godey's Lady's
Book. Delightfully illustrated with woodcuts (black and white drawings) and
several color plates.

http://www.city-gallery.com/books/

Updates!

In the new design, I've tried to make the bookstore pages more readable.
The layout is clearer and puts the reviews where they are visible. Several
of the book lists have been updated with new additions. Additions were to
Understanding the Family Album, Photography and Society, Victorian
Photography and the Preserving Photographs list has been revised and posted
again after an absence.

Reviewers Wanted!

If you would like to review any of the books in the store, please contact
me at editor@... If you would like to review a book relating
to family photographs that is not listed, let me know. Even if the book has
already been reviewed, please consider doing a review. I would like to see
as many opinions as possible reflected in the reviews.

editor@...

I would also love to hear about any experiences using these books in your
research or any comments you might that would help in evaluating their
usefulness.

Thanks,

Steve

It appears that the image in the lower left is a Civil war soldier. he is
wearing a four button sack coat and what appear to be the standard
issue sky-blue trowsers. From the FTM page about these images:

"With the album were the Civil War discharge papers of CHARLES ALVIN DeWITT,
121st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company "K", musician
(1862-1865), Delaware, Ohio."

I would gladly pay for a copy of that image for my reference files on Federal
infantry trowsers. Please contact me privately.

I now see my photo on your site. Very good job the way it is set up by
you. If it's OK I have more old pictures I can send or do you mainly
want just unknown lost individuals in the pictures. Let me know. I'll be
glad to send you some every now and then as I work on them for my

Mexican Border 1916

This is a photo post card sent
to my mother from my father, from Elpaso Texas in Sept.1916.
It is a favorite among the few
that I have. My father was in the Penna. National Guard and was serving on the
border at the time.
The lower right corner indicate it was produced by W.H.Horne Co., Elpaso, Tex.
The lower right corner indicate the subject is the Yaqui Indians of Mexico.
I can only guess they played a part in the defense of the border on the side of
U.S. during the incident with Poncho Villa, and the men in the men in the back
in civilian clothes could be govt. men?
I would be interested in any comments about this time in history and if my
interpretation is correct.

Becky,
thank you. I've fallen behind in reviewing pictures. Each picture you
upload has to be reviewed by hand before it is public. I do this to prevent
unscrupulous people from uploading advertisements or pornography, or even
pirated software. From my experience, I would not doubt they would do this,
although none has so far.

So I don't deluge the list with messages, I've been slowly working through
the backlog. I will pick out your image and review it.

I have a new poll up on City Gallery today, which I hope the results of
will prove interesting to the list. The question is "What is your favorite
type of software for organizing family photos?"

Polling booth is open at

BTW does anyone have a good idea for the next poll? I'd like to change it
more frequently than with the last question.

Hope everyone had a happy holiday,

Here's a picture of the Chillicothe, Ohio, police force in 1910. My

there's no caption and I have no idea which uniform signifies what. Anyone know

Subject: A Digest Mode
knoblock@...
Send Email Send Email

Although I was pushed to leave Genealogy Online as our list host, I had
been searching for a new list service provider for a long time. One reason
for leaving is the lack of a true digest mode. Our old list server,
SmartList, requires that two lists be maintained and created, one for the
regular list and one for the digest. The Unix trickery required to get this
to work properly would boggle any ordinary mind. It also means that
subscriber confusion is a certainty. Not only do they need to remember,
understand and use FOUR mailing list addresses, it goes against the
expectations most people have about mailing lists. But that when you want
to change modes, from regular to digest and back, you must change lists.
Most mailing lists have a digest mode, where subscribers can specify how
they want their messages delivered on an individual basis.

egroups offers a true digest mode, each subscriber may chose to receive
messages as they are posted, a full or summary digest. You do not have to
belong to a separate list to receive the digest, nor do you have to waste
time changing lists when you want to change the way your receive messages.

To set digest mode, see these instructions

http://www.egroups.com/info/help/main/digest.html

Today, I have sent the PhotoGen digest subscribers to egroups for
invitation to the new GenPhoto list. Once you are subscribed, you may
change your settings to digest any time you wish.

I have a wonderful book titled Dressed For the Photgrapher. On page 62 there
is a photo of a man and woman. The man is dressed in a similar outfit.
Haircut, collar style, vest and lapel cut are all the same. Only difference
is the tie which is knotted in my picture. Book states photo taken 1848-50.

Can you date this daguerreotype?

Passed down to me from my grandmother (1908-1988) but she didn't know who he
was. Mirror image is fairly faint unless you tilt it a bit. Thought maybe I

This photo, often identified as my grandfather Henry Simowitz, is perhaps the
only photo of my great grandfather, Eleazer Samovitz of Velke Kaposney, Hungary.
I have been told he is "wearing an American suit". Can anyone tell me the
probably vintage of the photo and the style of dress?
