Subject: TODAY IN HISTORY ~~ 21 SEPTEMBER

21 Sep 1779 ~ Benedict Arnold Commits Treason
On this day in 1780, during the American Revolution, American General
Benedict Arnoldmeets with British Major John Andre to discuss handing over
West Point to the British, in return for the promise of a large sum of money
and a high position in the British army. The plot was foiled and Arnold, a
former American hero, became synonymous with the word "traitor."

Arnold was born into a well-respected family in Norwich, Connecticut, on
January 14, 1741. He apprenticed with an apothecary and was a member of the
militia during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). He later became a
successful trader and joined the Continental Army when the Revolutionary War
broke out between Great Britain and its 13 American colonies in 1775. When
the war ended in 1883, the colonies had won their independence from Britain
and formed a new nation, the United States.

During the war, Benedict Arnold proved himself a brave and skillful leader,
helping Ethan Allen's troops capture Fort Ticonderoga in 1775 and then
participating in the unsuccessful attack on British Quebec later that year,
which earned him a promotion to brigadier general. Arnold distinguished
himself in campaigns at Lake Champlain, Ridgefield and Saratoga, and gained
the support of George Washington. However, Arnold had enemies within the
military and in 1777, five men of lesser rank were promoted over him. Over
the course of the next few years, Arnold married for a second time and he
and his new wife lived a lavish lifestyle in Philadelphia, accumulating
substantial debt. The debt and the resentment Arnold felt over not being
promoted faster were motivating factors in his choice to become a turncoat.

In 1780, Arnold was given command of West Point, an American fort on the
Hudson River in New York (and future home of the U.S. military academy,
established in 1802). Arnold contacted Sir Henry Clinton, head of the
British forces, and proposed handing over West Point and his men. On
September 21 of that year, Arnold met with Major John Andre and made his
traitorous pact. However, the conspiracy was uncovered and Andre was
captured and executed. Arnold, the former American patriot, fled to the
enemy side and went on to lead British troops in Virginia and Connecticut.
He later moved to England, though he never received all of what he'd been
promised by the British. He died in London on June 14, 1801.

21 Sep : 1779 ~ Spaniards Capture Baton Rouge
On this day in 1779, the Louisiana governor and Spanish military officer
Bernardo de Galvez, with the aide of American troops and militia volunteers,
captures the British post and garrison at Baton Rouge, located in what was
then British-controlled West Florida.

In a cunning and brilliant move, de Galvez included in the terms of the
British surrender of Baton Rouge that the British also surrender Fort
Panmure at Natchez to Spanish control. Defeated and on the verge of utter
annihilation, the British had no other choice but to accept the terms.
The Spanish capture of Baton Rouge and Fort Panmure ended British control of
the Mississippi Valley and opened the Mississippi River to a Spanish supply
line-running from the Gulf of Mexico to the Ohio Valley--that greatly
benefited the American cause. De Galvez was then able to lay siege to the
British-occupied city of Pensacola, Florida, in the spring of 1781, which
ended in a British surrender on May 8.

Spain never officially signed an alliance with the American revolutionaries,
as King Charles III was hesitant about the precedent he might be setting by
encouraging the population of another empire to overthrow their monarch.
However, Spain also wanted to regain Gibraltar in the Mediterranean from the
British and solidify control of its North American holdings, so it
allied itself to France in the international war against Britain. Spain
regained West Florida during the fighting and East Florida, which it
exchanged for the Bahamas, in the final peace. Though Gibraltar remained in
British control, Spain also won all the land surrounding the Gulf of Mexico.

Please do not feel bad.

Ancestry.com gleans from the Internet for free,  and then sells it.

I have never joined and paid Ancestry. If they find it' it is still there, on

I stopped using ancestry years ago as well. You can put the name you are
searching into Google search and add location and approximate year. You'll be
surprised what you can find for free!!!

There were Thigpin families in Pitt Co. One connected with my Moore family also
of Pitt. They migrated into GA/FL in the 1800s. Whether they connect with yours
or not I'm not sure.

There is also a Thigpin in the DAR records that descended from Caleb Moore of
Pitt and GA. You can obtain those records from the DAR. Just go to their
website.

I'd also look for a death certificate for Charles Waller Thigpin which would
likely give you the place of his birth and parents names. Then you keep going
back from there.

Good luck. best, Cheryl

I don't know if that is the same one. She was married to a Charlie W. Blanton at
one time, but they may have divorced. It could possibly be her. Did you find any
information on Emma too?
Thank you so very much for replying.

I agree Barb. I cant' afford Ancestry either....it is available at
most libraries though. However you have time limits at a library, so I
say do your homework, then pop on and get the hardcopies you want,
then poke around with the remainder of your time.

Most of the gems and/or facts I find are freely available, and all
from good-old fashion detective work. Its out there, and your often
better off with some of those sources since the transcriber is someone
you can sometimes get in contact with. I mean, google now has hoards
of old digital sources and I've downloaded quite a few open-source old
documents with lots of good & meaty details. Then you have rootsweb
and they host a couple sources I use alot for UK vitals: freeCen,
freeReg.

FamilySearch.org of course is a staple. Then you can also find some
wonderful gems of information on sites such as this, or other county
based sites - I find all mine with a search like "Washington County"
Genealogy, or "Reid Family" kilmarnok Scotland....some times those
random searchs hit pay dirt. I use the "" to quantify that it search
for those words together, then have the other two words anywhere on
that same page. Its quite amazing the clues you can sometimes dig-up
with just some old-fashion detective work.

Happy hunting

Paula Norman

Thank you so very much for all of this new information. The only thing I had was
my husband's dad, who was Robert Anthony Blanton Jr. His dad was Robert Anthony
Blanton Sr and his mom was Willie Emma Thigpen. I didn't have any documentation
of Robert Sr and Emma being married. I don't have much info on her family,
except her parents Evie May Glass and Charlie W. Thigpen.

I stopped using ancestry years ago as well. You can put the name you are
searching into Google search and add location and approximate year. You'll be
surprised what you can find for free!!!

There were Thigpin families in Pitt Co. One connected with my Moore family also
of Pitt. They migrated into GA/FL in the 1800s. Whether they connect with yours
or not I'm not sure.

There is also a Thigpin in the DAR records that descended from Caleb Moore of
Pitt and GA. You can obtain those records from the DAR. Just go to their
website.

I'd also look for a death certificate for Charles Waller Thigpin which would
likely give you the place of his birth and parents names. Then you keep going
back from there.

Good luck. best, Cheryl

Subject: Scotland Wills & Testaments Now Online:

Wills & Testaments
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=554&407

If a person wished to settle his or her affairs before death, they drew up a
will, which set down their instructions as to the disposal of their
possessions and named the executor whom they wished to administer the estate
The executor had to be confirmed by the court and the document drawn up by
the court for this purpose is known as a testament. There are two types of
testaments: the testament testamentar and testament dative.

The testament testamentar applied when the deceased died testate (leaving a
will). It comprised four parts: the introductory clause, an inventory of the
deceased's possessions (see below), the confirmation clause and a copy of
the will, stating the wishes of the deceased regarding the disposal of the
estate and naming the executor (usually a family member) he or she had
chosen to undertake this task. If a copy of the will was not included,
reference was made to it having been recorded elsewhere, probably in the
court's Registers of Deeds.

The testament dative was drawn up by the court if a person died intestate
(without leaving a will), in order to appoint and confirm the executor on
their behalf. It comprised three parts: the introductory clause, an
inventory of the deceased's possessions, and the confirmation clause. The
testament dative might name a family member as executor, but if the deceased
died in debt, a creditor might be appointed as executor instead. In such
cases, the testament would include a list of the deceased's debts and would
exist solely for the purpose of authorising the discharge of those debts.

Inheritance
Under Scots Law, an individual's property was divided into two types:
Heritable property consisted of land, buildings, minerals and mining rights,
and passed to the eldest son according to the law of primogeniture.

Moveable property consisted of anything that could be moved e.g. household
and personal effects, investments, tools, machinery. It was divided into a
maximum of three parts: the widow's part, the bairns part (all children had
a right to an equal share) and the dead's part. For more detailed
information on inheritance see FAQs on Property & Inheritance
Before the early years of the 19th century, testaments related only to the
moveable property of the deceased. However, from the early 19th century
onwards, it was not uncommon to find dispositions, settlements, trust
dispositions and settlements, etc. recorded in the commissary court
registers, and these documents often included details of heritable property.
After 1868, the law of primogeniture, where the eldest son inherited
everything, still applied to heritable property unless there had been a
specific disposition or bequest by the deceased to another party.

Inventories
The inventory lists the moveable property belonging to the deceased at the
time of his or her death. It can include household furnishings, clothes,
jewellery, books, papers, farm stock and crops, tools and machinery, money
in cash, bank accounts and investments, as well as money owed to creditors
and money due from debtors. Often the inventory consists only of a brief,
overall valuation, but sometimes it is very detailed, with the value of
every item listed. As such, it can supply a snapshot of the deceased's
lifestyle and help to build up a picture of what social and economic
conditions were like in a particular locality at a particular time. An
inventory that contains a 'roup roll' is particularly interesting in that it
itemises each lot sold in the auction and states the prices paid (sometimes
with the names of the purchasers).

Almost every document in the wills & testaments index contains an inventory
of some kind, except where there are separate registers for wills. See the
Famous Scots section for the inventories of Rob Roy McGregor, David
Livingstone, Adam Smith and many others, or look atThe Way People Lived for
more examples.

The Courts
Before 1823, testaments were recorded in the Commissary Court with
jurisdiction over the parish in which the person died. Commissary Court
boundaries roughly corresponded to those of the mediaeval dioceses that
existed before the Reformation, and bear no relation to county boundaries.
The Edinburgh Commissary Court, as the principal court, also had the power
to confirm testaments for those who owned moveable property in more than one
commissariot and for Scots who died outside Scotland.

Commissary Courts were abolished in 1823 and Sheriff Courts assumed
responsibility for confirmation of testaments from 1 January 1824, although
the changeover process created a considerable overlap of dates in some
courts. To find out more about the relationship between the Scottish
counties and the courts look at our Courts Map. For further information on
the courts themselves, see About The Courts

The Wills & Testaments Index
The wills & testaments index contains over 611,000 index entries to Scottish
wills and testaments dating from 1513 to 1925. Each index entry lists the
surname, forename, title, occupation and place of residence (where these are
given) of the deceased person, the court in which the testament was recorded
with the date. Index entries do not include names of executors, trustees
or
heirs to the estate. They also do not include the deceased's date of death,
or the value of the estate.

If you are searching for a will or testament, you should bear in mind that
there was no legal requirement for individuals to make a will. Indeed,
comparatively few Scots actually bothered to do this. Even if someone died
intestate, there was no obligation for the family to go to court to have the
deceased's affairs settled. Many families sorted things out amicably amongst
themselves, in which case there will be no testament.

It is always worthwhile checking the indexes, however, because they can
include persons from quite humble origins.

Sometimes the intervention of the court to settle the deceased's affairs was
not required until many years after the death, possibly due to a dispute,
therefore if a will or testament exists, it may be recorded much later than
you would expect.

Images of Wills & Testaments
Images of wills and testaments from 1500 to 1925 are available on this site.
These images are full colour, authentic facsimiles of the original documents
which are held at the National Archives of Scotland, Edinburgh. For reasons
of preservation, the original documents have now been withdrawn from public
use.

To find out more about what you might expect to see on a wills & testaments
image, look at Images

Sample images of wills & testaments from different periods can be viewed by
selecting the appropriate period from the left hand menu.

One of the great ways to find family info is through the use of family
bibles. The North Carolina State Archives holds a collection of hundreds of
Family bibles and over the past couple of years have been in the process of
digitizing them, and making them available to everyone online. They have
recently completed the project and if you haven't used those resources, you
may be missing out on a lot. These bibles contain many things, some have
several generations of families which include dates of births, marriages and
deaths; some include slave records with complete listings of slave families.
All of these records can prove a valuable resource of information and is
well worth taking time to explore through them.
Following is a link to the State Archives Blog discussing the Collection:

http://ncarchives.wordpress.com/2012/11/16/final-bible-records-added-to-online-c\
ollection/

This following is the direct link to the North Carolina Family Records
Online, which includes links to the "Bible Records", as well as to other
great Collections that have been digitized. Once on the site, you can get
to the "Bible Records" by clicking onto that, which takes you to the page
where the records are broken down by Counties. Or you can do a search of
the entire Collection by clicking onto "search for your family". Either
way, you can't beat the price...FREE!

Library of Congress releases 1,600 brilliant photos of America's World War
II-era past
The photos, capturing life in the then-48 states, show women working at
plane plants, farmers surveying property and fairgoers having rousing fun.

A government photo album is giving viewers a rare invitation into America's
colorful past.

The Library of Congress has released over 1,600 color images of American
society, all snapped during the World War II era.

The nostalgic photos, taken between 1939 and 1944, give viewers a look at
different slices of life in the then-48 states, from women working at an
airplane plant in California to farmers surveying their property in New
Mexico.

Several of the images, which were gathered by the Farm Security
Administration/Office of War Information, provide a glimpse of the quaint
Vermont State Fair, which was held in Rutland in 1941.

The Vermont State Fair was originally a daylong celebration. However, it
quickly expanded and, now in its 168th year, lasts two weeks.

Hello,

I just found this group while trying to research my father's side of the family.
If anyone could help out with information on the Clark family I would be very
greatful. My great grandmother was Rosetta Clark, her Father was William Henry
Clark and her mother was Mary E Weatherly. That is all I'm sure of. I do know
the Clarks are one of the orginal families in Pitt, Co.

Thank you and God Bless
Susan

Clark doesn't ring a bell to me, but I'll check my records. My line
goes back to before it was Pitt County...

Susan, my in-laws(the Clarks) for several generations back were in Granville
County,NC.migrating there from Maryland. Do not recognize any of your names, but
as my research continues, will watch for them. Perhaps we can make a connection.
