and he had a son

I have list of children for James E. Sumerell and Jesse James Sumerell

Bill,
I have Lemuel Sumerell on my database, but not his parents.

As he's not a direct ancestor, I haven't done much research on him.
However, I have several aliases for his surname:

Summerell
Sumerell (on 1850 Census)
Sumersell (on 1880 Census)
Sumrell (in article "Death of Lam Sumrell D.R. 15 July 1904")

I have an indicator that he may have used Samuel,
but it may be a misinterpretation of a script "L" v/s "S"

I found this in the old notes: /it's an email you sent on June 30, 2008.

Merry Christmas to all!

A question for the Group.
Slightly off topic ...

I don't do genealogy as much as before, mostly because of a high level of
frustration that I have with my new laptop and the 2010 version of FTM.

History: I tripped over my laptop's wire, pulling it off of the table. [No data
loss,
I had a backup.] My son generously purchased & sent me a new laptop that
he thought would be very good processor. It would have worked good with my
2005 FTM program, but it's Vista operating system required I upgrade and I
purchased the Family Tree Maker 2010.

My 1st ISSUE is the way the FTM2010 processes its database, which is quite
different than my old version did. I think it brings the entire database
into RAM
for some of its processes - like building an index or merging two individuals -
making very large files very cumbersome. (IE my 80,000 database file takes 5
long hours to open and build its an index.) NOT FUN!!!

On top of that, the laptop [has a single core] goes to 100% usage during these
processes. To solve this, I selected only direct ancestors, reducing my file to
8,000 (10%) and reducing the processing time is a mere 30 minutes.
Still NOT FUN!  And now, I have two copies of some people!

My 2nd ISSUE is that FTM2010 made other signifant improvements, which has
taken me months and months to edit my smaller databases to correct. I've started
converting the 8,000 file, but the 80,000 one is an overwhelming task still
looming.

One such task is straightening my address field data, which changed from one
line to two lines. The first line is City/State/Country, which is verified by
FTM.
The second line holds local addresses, as well as, comments [like "WWII action"]
which I have used extensively.

Now, don't get me wrong, the end result looks like it will be much better
product than before. Especially in finding specific references quickly.

My 3rd ISSUE is how frequently FTM stops running as a task on my desktop
(but is still running on the computer using 91% CPU). I must wait till it ends
before restarting FTM. I have no idea whether this is a computer issue or a
application issue.
________________________________________________

I don't know if any of you have faced these issues. If you have, how have you
overcomed them? Or perhaps like me, you've been sucking it up.

Here's the Question  - - - -
Will a dual core [or larger] machine solve my processing issues? OR
Assuming there's no hope for this version of FTM,

I should buy FTM2011, which fixes the CPU usage and crashing problems? OR
There's no hope any of these FTMs, I should buy a different program. OR
I should do both or something else ...

Waiting to hear from you - Merry Christmas, Marcia

How much memory do you have on your computer? Sounds like you don't have enough.
These days to work smoothly you need at least 4 gig memory, 6 is even better.

On your computer, go to
start
control panel
system and maintenance
choose system
it will tell you how much memory (RAM) you have on your computer.
I have 4 on my laptop, but had 6 on the desktop that I gave to grandson for
games.
It takes about 2 gig ram just to run windows, so if you don't have more than
that, you have nothing left to run other programs after you boot up to windows.
You can take it to Best Buy and they will install if for you right there if you
don't have anyone else to do it for you.
It is a simple pull out the chip and push the new ones in. If nothing is wrong
with your computer, it will do all the necessary work itself of picking up the
new memory chips.
If this is not your problem, sorry, but that sure is what it sounds like.
Best Buy employs intelligent "kids" who are taught to push sales, so don't let
them sell you anything else.
If the repair is half or nearly half the cost of a new computer, you're better
off going with a new computer. Computers are cheaper than they have "ever" been,
but unless you know you're getting a deal, I'd wait until after Christmas to buy
a new computer. Wait for the sales.
My son just bought a new quad core but I am still using very nicely a dual core,
but next one I buy will be a quad core. It is faster.
Just wait for the sales.

One more thing I need to tell you to look for.
Is it a celeron computer?
WalMart sold some laptops on Black Friday for $198 which sounded good! I was
almost tempted to go early (never again) until I read the fine print that it was
a celeron.
A celeron is like a tricycle next to a bicycle. The new computers are like
motorcycles to a bicycle. A celeron is limited and no amount of money spent on
it will give you the speed you needto get some programs to work. It is basically
a word processor and the old FTM programs. And the newer word processors have
some problems with celerons too.
I do photo restoration and tried some photos on one and I was really
frustrated....it would take forever to do anything.
If you have a celeron and it works with the programs you are running, no
problem. I wouldn't worry about anything. As long as it does the job, it is
good.

Marcia, I gave up on FTM when the 2009 version came out and, while "converting"
my database to the new format, trashed much of the data. In addition, it dropped
many of the features which I enjoyed, such as being able to access the FTM data
disks from within the program. It appeared to be a "stripped down" version of
FTM, intended for people who were just beginning in genealogy, rather than those
of use who had been using FTM for years. Not exactly rewarding to previously
loyal customers!

I've gone with The Master Genealogist, which, while it has a fairly steep
learning curve, is an excellent program. My database only has about 7000 people
in it so far (I have a separate database for my husband's family), but it does
open up very quickly.

I agree with Margaret. I bought FTM 2009 when I got my last new computer
because I had heard FTM Version 16 was incompatable with Vista. I could not
download my backup data discs into FTM 2009 because it would not accept the
backup format from Version 16. I did enter some data and HATED everything about
FTM 2009. I then found on the FTM message board that so many were complaining
about the FTM 2009 that FTM offered a free PATCH download that took care of the
incompatability of Version 16 (the best they ever made as far as I'm concerned)
with Vista. I downloaded the Patch and my trusty old FTM Version 16 and
everything works fine. I am not super computer savvy, just enough to get by with
my genealogy, the internet and storing files. When something doesn't work I
usually have to call for help, but I did manage to get back to a workable system
in this instance. :-)

I use FTM V16 too. I downloaded the patch and it works fine. I hate the all over
the screen mess of FTM 2008, my last upgrade that I put on and took off.
FTM V16 lets you store 250 pages per name and I love this feature.
I, however, don't use the FTM backup version but always export to a ged file
because a ged file is accepted by any genealogy program. I have backup geds on
several media since I have about 76,000 people in mine from Nash, Wilson, and
Edgecombe Counties. Most are connected in some way.
I have other ged family files that I sometimes look at, but not in a long time.
I love being able to find what I want quickly in V16 and will use it until it
can be used no more. But with its popularity, I think they will do something
about a version that will be used as long as "lots" of people request it.

Welcome to TMG (The Master Genealogist)!
I have been a very happy user since 1999 when I transferred my data from
UFT (Ultimate Family Tree).
Will enjoy reading your messages on the TMG List.

I have a Brittaina on my tree who I thought was a Johnson but turned up as a
"Summerrell" on a marriage record. She was born abt 1848. In 1862, she married
John Wooten. Presently, I have the names of nine of their children. If anyone
has any insight it would be appreciated.

Happy New Year everybody!

I have been constructing my family ancestry for a while now and continue to run
across two townships identified on Federal census records for which I'm
unfamiliar. These are: Andrews and Beaver Dam. I would like your help in
identifying approximately where these townships are located within Pitt County.
A link to a map showing these would be even better.

Thanks in advance for your help.

For the Andrews District:

Go to the Pitt County Family Researchers Website and click "on line
resources".  From there look at the 1850 Census and you will see a  map
showing the Districts.  You will find Andrews on the top center.

   THE RECORDING OF A CEMETERY

   BY THELMA GREENE REAGAN

Today we walked where others walked
   On a lonely, windswept hill;
Today we talked where others cried
For Loved Ones whose lives are stilled.

   Today our hearts were touched
   By graves of tiny babies;
Snatched from the arms of loving kin,
In the heartbreak of the ages.

Today we saw where the grandparents lay
   In the last sleep of their time;
Lying under the trees and clouds -
Their beds kissed by the sun and wind.

   Today we wondered about an unmarked spot;
Who lies beneath this hollowed ground?
Was it a babe, child, young or old?
   No indication could be found.

Today we saw where Mom and Dad lay.
We had been here once before
On a day we'd all like to forget,
   But will remember forever more.

Today we recorded for kith and kin
   The graves of ancestors past;
To be preserved for generations hence,
A record we hope will last.

Cherish it, my friend; preserve it, my friend,
For stones sometimes crumble to dust
And generations of folks yet to come
Will be grateful for your trust.

   Bill,

Maybe PCHS will consider a reprinting at some time. That was a wonderful
project that you devoted a number of years of your time to doing and I think it
is fabulous that Mary got so interested in it and was so much help to you.

My friend Peg was telling me all about the recent removal of graves from the
old Mills cemetery out near Highway 33. What a fascinating account she told. I
wish I had taken the time to go out there to observe. Her account was full of
details that I could not have imagined. I plan to contact Ward to see if he can
put together a program on the subject. I think it would be interesting if he
could bring along the two men who assisted him. Peg said that they were quite
experienced and full of interesting information.

I would like to see the information on the family that was recovered in the
removal. Have you ever been able to link this Mills family to any descendants
in the area. I know they must be related to Peg's Mills ancestors, but not sure
if it was ever determined just how they connect.

We missed you at the VOY meeting Wednesday. Hope you and Mary are well.

   Trish

Thanks to all of you who have purchase a copy. As most of you

wish I had taken the time to go out there to observe. Her account was full of
details that I could not have imagined. I plan to contact Ward to see if he can
put together a program on the subject. I think it would be interesting if he
could bring along the two men who assisted him. Peg said that they were quite
experienced and full of interesting information.

it was ever determined just how they connect.
