Looking for Deep Creek.
Think it may have been the 1st name for either Kitten Creek or Otter Creek.
Named in Grants to Edward Williams 1737, John Williams 1762 and susequent deeds
in that area.
Any clues?
Thanks,
Martha-Gay

Martha-Gay, the USGS geographic names site lists Autrey Creek and Orders Creek
as alternate names for Otter Creek, and lists none for Kitten Creek. Deep Creek
doesn't appear at all.

This is a great site for looking up geographic names, both old and new, and the
URL is

http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=139:1:1700846030879243

You'll need to register, but it's free (well, not really free, since it's paid
for by our tax dollars!)

I just tried googling (is that a word yet?) Deep Creek, N.C. and it appears to
be near Bryson. Hope that helps. Cheryl o7o

Hi - The North Carolina Gazetteer lists 21 "Deep Creeks" in NC in various parts
of the state - none in the vicinity of Pitt County. However it states the Kitten
Creek "rises in W Pitt County and flows NE into Otter Creek". There are 5
listings for Otter Creek in various parts of the state. The one in Pitt states
"Otter Creek rises in E Wilson County and flows E across S Edgecombe into W Pitt
County where it enters Tar River".

Does rhis help?

Some of you may have received auto-email updates RE: new photos from this Yahoo
group's website, so I thought I'd offer an explanation for the new ones I've
posted, most of them in the "Falkland Hwy" folder referenced above. I grew up
in the Rock Spring area of Falkland Hwy (NC Hwy 43) about 4 mi. NW of
Greenville, and have always been fascinated by the history of the locality and
specifically that road, which is one of the oldest roads in eastern NC.

This photo collection mostly consists of shots I've snapped in the past few
years, supplemented by some historical b/w photos from my family files and a few
other sources mostly uncovered by Bill Kittrell. The photos are somewhat in
order of the road's route that starts in Edgecombe County near Pitt County
border and follows the road toward Greenville concluding at the famous B's BBQ
restaurant, which is about to close due to the road widening. So much of this
history is now disappearing before our eyes, that I've felt the need to document
some of it in this photo collection. Most of them do not have descriptions yet,
but I am adding descriptions as I get time, so pls be patient.

Bob,
Thanks so much for sharing the "Falkland Hwy" album with this group. It is
especially meaningful to me to know that it exists because before your post and
even though I have been a member of this group for 1-2 years, I never knew of
the albums existence. My mother, Edna Whitehurst Lewis, her parents C. W. &
Grizzelle Whitehurst, and her siblings lived for many years in the "Tyson House"
a few hundred yards west of the Gus Forbes house. In fact, I wish you would
change the description to read "Tyson/Whitehurst House" because it was owned by
the Whitehurst family from the late 1800s until the 1980s. The album has special
meaning to me because these were my grandparents, uncles, and aunts and even
though I grew up in Greenville, I spent much time at the house and in the
community as a young boy.

You and I are distantly related as my great-great aunt was Anastacia Christman
Forbes (married to Alfred Archibald Forbes). My great-great grandmother was
Elisiff (Lissie) Christman Watson. According to information I have, Lissie was
buried in the Forbes Cemetery in 1906 although I didn't see a picture of her
grave marker in your photographs.

Thanks again for your information.

Fred - Many thanks for your response. I'm excited that my Falkland Hwy
album posting has "flushed you out," since one of my intentions in posting
it was to elicit more comments and knowledge from folks who have a
historical connection to the area, as you certainly do.

I will amend the title of "Tyson House" in the album to "Tyson-Whitehurst"
house as you requested, which I intended to do anyway and just needed
confirmation, as I had heard from some others about the Whitehurst family
owning that house for a long time after the Civil War. My understanding is
that my gr-gr-grandfather Alfred Forbes (1806-1847) sold the part of his
plantation south of Hwy 43 to the Tyson family in the 1840's (I'm still
looking for the deed), which is why the Tyson-Whitehurst house (reportedly
built in 1852) is shown as belonging to "Mrs. Tyson" on Gilmer's map.

Do you know whether the Whitehurst family married into the Tyson clan or
instead, acquired that farm from the Tysons? I know it was originally a
pretty large farm of 600-800 acres, because the McLawhorn family later
acquired ~200 acres fields from it, which they still farm, but ~300 acres
of pine woods behind it (part of the Glass House Pocosin) are still owned
by a Whitehurst family member.

As to our Christman connections, my gr-grandmother and your gr-gr-aunt
Anastasia Christman Forbes was buried in the A.A. Forbes cemetery, and my
cousin Alf Forbes relocated all those graves to Greenville's Greenwood
Cemetery in the 1950's, where they remain. Her sister, Indianna Christman
Evans, is buried in the Evans-Forbes cemetery across the hwy from
Whitehurst house, as is a man named Tom Watson, who could have been the
husband of your gr-gr-grandmother Elisiff Christman Watson. Your
gr-gr-mother's remains may also be there in an unmarked grave, as we know a
number of unmarked graves are in that plot. Do you have an ancestral
family tree you could share? I will certainly share mine from that branch,
and we can both fill in some blanks.

I would also appreciate any further knowledge or especially any historical
photos you may have of the Falkland Hwy area.

Sincerely,

Bob Forbes

Why Genealogists Need The Law

Presented by Kathy Gunter Sullivan, Certified Genealogist
(Certified Genealogist is a service mark of the Board for Certification of
Genealogists.)

The law is complex, and its language is foreign. Nevertheless, researchers and
historians must understand the legal system in effect during the time period
being studied. This presentation focuses on how the law can answer troublesome
research questions. It gives specific examples touching on probate, land, and
other important legal situations encountered by the people and is accompanied by
a syllabus and supplementary handouts. A question and answer period follows the
presentation.

The program is sponsored by the Tar River Connections Genealogical Society and
Braswell Memorial Library. The speaker would like a head count, so if you are
interested in coming, please contact Local History/Genealogy Librarian Traci
Thompson at 252-442-1951 ext. 247 or tthompson@... or

anyone interested!

My ancestor Mary Lula Tyson Baker Beddard was the third wife of Henry C.
Beddard of Pitt County. Does anyone have a picture of Henry Beddard? As
far as we know, all pictures of Mary L. T. B. Beddard were consumed in a
fire if there were ever any of her. I keep hoping someone took a picture of
Henry Beddard and Mary together.

Dear Bob,
Your photographs are absolutely stunning. You are an incredibly gifted
photographer. I have enjoyed your album very much. Your images are so real
that before I know it, I find myself inside them living in the moments they
capture. They break the time barrier in a way that nothing else I have ever
experienced has done.
A family member owned the Proctor hotels. This piece of family history
makes the inclusion of the hotel in your album especially dear to me. From the
response to your postings, I realize that others share similar feelings of
gratitude to you for giving them back their families through the memories your
photographs inspire.
    Thanks, Carol

I was looking through a listing of marriage records for free people of color in
Pitt and found an ancestor with a different surname. It lists her as "Brittaina
Summerell" married to John Wooten in 1862. I am not surprised by this, just
curious. I have her with the maiden name Johnson/Johnston. I found a cyber
cousin with a Sam Sumrell that was at times Sam Johnson/Johnston. I am
unfamiliar with the Summerells (white, black, or other) and am looking for
research ideas to connect a few dots. I have been told there is supposed to be a
record of a court case where the Summerells and Johnstons were suing each other
over the ownership of Sam. Any help would be appreciated.

Aw shucks, but thanks Carol:-) The story behind my rush to post these photos is
that my home computer starting acting funny a week or so ago, and feeling that
it might be under virus attack, I wanted to store some of my favorite photos
somewhere else "safe" in case my files got wiped out. Well, sure enough, the
infamous "Security Suite" virus shut the computer down Fri. night and it took me
most of yesterday plus ~$100 to get in line w/ McAfee for one of their
specialists over in India to take over my computer and rid it of the disease. We
finally declared victory about 1 AM this morn, and I'm on the road again, having
upgraded security (another $100 or so), I wouldn't wish that nasty bug on
anybody... :-(

There's a story behind each one of the photos I have posted. I took most of the
current ones, but there are also some old b/w photos from my family files as
well as the Belle Hearne Harris papers (distant relative who grew up on Falkland
Hwy ca. 1900) that Bill Kittrell has been painstakingly reviewing. Each photo
description allows for 3-4 sentences of each photo's story to be told, and I'm
about half-way thru the biggest album, which is the one on Falkland Hwy. So you
& others may want to check back when you get a chance and read the descriptions
as they will help bring meaning to the photos. One other tip I have for viewing
them is to click on the "Large" or "Original" photo settings to see some more
detail.

Ron Carnighan, Marketing Director for SpringShire Retirement Community which is
being planned close to my family farm, prevailed upon me to write an article
about the history of the area for their newsletter, and I posted it in the
"Files" folder on this website. Also I'm working on a presentation he wants me
to give to folks who are interested in SpringShire, which we are trying to
schedule for late October in Greenville. More on that later for those
interested.

Have a good week!

I have AVAST and it detected a virus in the file that you unloaded. Fortunately,
after the alarm sounded, I clicked on abort and it did not load onto my

The photo files were fine, but jpg files don't usually carry a virus unless it
is an embedded message such as terrorists use. You need a special program to
open a jpg that opens an embedded message in a jpg file and I don't presently
have one. I had an old program that is no longer usable on the new windows files
but never used it anyway.
I'm not as adventurous with computer files as I used to be. ☺
I opened all the jpg files.

I stripped the file of its formatting and protected it making it ready-only.
This should have gotten rid of any hint of virus for readers of the file. Pls
let me know if AVAST sounds the alarm again or not.

It's clean now. I just went through without a problem.
You might want to install AVAST. It is a free program and worth its weight in
gold. I run two virus programs on my computer at all times although it is said
you can't do that.
I think the "you can't do that" comes from commercial companies who don't want
you to drop their program.

Yahoo group's website, so I thought I'd offer an explanation for the new ones
I've posted, most of them in the "Falkland Hwy" folder referenced above. I grew
up in the Rock Spring area of Falkland Hwy (NC Hwy 43) about 4 mi. NW of
Greenville, and have always been fascinated by the history of the locality and
specifically that road, which is one of the oldest roads in eastern NC.
>

Whenever I get a new computer, they now come installed with McAfee and that is
the first thing I remove. Years ago, McAfee left too many pieces of program on
the computer that kept giving nightmares for up to six months. That was when you
could go into DOS and find the pieces. When finally, every little piece was
removed, I got back to no trouble.
I am so very sorry, but I don't want McAfee even if it was free, which it is
not.
Norton was too expensive compared to free "good" programs so I quit using
Norton. And people who did use Norton had too many conflicts with other
programs. And when I used Norton, it was the last company to upload a fix for a
virus making the rounds.
I use AVG and AVAST - both are free programs and have used AVG for several
years. Last year I installed AVAST and it is now a must have. I like the web
site feature too since you can pick up many viruses on websites now-even
genealogy sites. Avast will sound an alarm and allow you to check the abort
option and it will not load on your computer. I most often will still scan the
computer to check but so far it has always come up virus free.
I was in Best Buy when another woman was buying a new computer. They were
selling her the moon and it was adding up. I was plainly eavesdropping, but she
was glad I did. I told her you don't have to buy that virus program. Just go to
avg.com and download the free program. She said, thanks, you saved me $130.

Folks -- the link to Falkland Hwy photo album is below:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/genpcncfir/photos/album/596042451/pic/list

A couple of other requests came in earlier this week asking if the photos would
be posted elsewhere, or if I could send them by email since the requesters do
not have access to Yahoo!Groups on the internet. Well, I'm not sure where else
I would post them, and most of the photos are a bit large to email, not to speak
of the additional time that would take. It's no trouble and certainly no
expense to sign onto Yahoo!Groups, and I think the link to start that process is
at the bottom of each of these messages. It not only gives you access to the
photos and other files that are posted on the genpcncfir groups page, but also
to a wide variety of other groups as well, which you can put in one directory on
your "My Groups" link. So it's a pretty good feature, which I've enjoyed using
and likely you would too.

For those who have visited the photos, I have added descriptions to about half
the ones in the "Falkland Hwy" folder and should finish the remainder by this
Sun. night, FYI.

Cheers,

Bob,, How do we thank you for this labor of love? I guess just to say thank you.
I have Moore family that was around the Tar River at Grindles Creek in the 1700s
and just a bit later. I also have a Tyson/Tison and now I really want to figure
out if that house was connected to her family.

Just thank you for posting all of this. all my best, Cheryl Rhoden
