We use Norton anti-virus and zone alarm firewall. We have been bombarded lately
with emails carrying viruses. I mean three or four a day. It has taken care of
everything. We are very pleased. Lori

   Subject: [genpcncfir] ANTI VIRUS PROGRAMS

   Hi Everyone,

Well as you can see Jewelle (bless her heart) got me back up and running
with the group again. Have a question for everyone. Has anyone used
Norton Antivirus with Firewall? I have Norton Antivirus, but it could
not remove the trojan virus from the computer. Had to get a program
called Trojan Remover. Or does anyone have any good suggestions?

   Appreciate any and all help.

   Marilyn

I, too, have been bombarded with emails with viruses attached -- some of
which appear to be returned mail from my email address. I use Norton
Internet Security -- so far none of the viruses have infected my computer.
It's very frustrating to have to delete half my messages. Pat

Dear Carol and other Worthington researchers,

Last year when I was in Kinston, I visited Maplewood Cemetery. I took photos of
these graves: Abijah Wesley Wetherington (b:1880), Alfred S (b:1868) & Sally D
(b:1870)Wetherington, George Dewey Wetherington (b:1899 Vet) and Jesse Walter
Wetherington (b:1931 Vet).

I do not have them in my database. If anyone has them I would be happy to email
them the jpegs.

Dear Trish, The story I have from Uncle Mark and Mama
was that Elizabeth was buried on Forbes' land because
Jeremiah owned no plot at the time. He lived to a ripe
old age, dying about a month before his son Alfred
Worthington. Jeremiah Sr. was our great, great
grandfather; Alfred his son born in 1845 was our great
grandfather, and Alfred who was born in 1871 ("Grandpa
Alp") was our grandfather. I believe that Alfred of
1845 secured what is known as the Alfred Worthington
Cemetery--but could be wrong about the acquisition.
Grandpa Alp himself owned no cemetery plot. That is
the reason that Jacky Ann McGowan (mother of his wife
Jenny Secession McGowan) who lived with him and died
in 1925 was buried in her brother-in-law's family
cemetery, the Carney Burial Ground according to the
death certificate. I would really appreciate it if you
or any of our membership can give me the location of
that cemetery; I have been able to find nothing at all
on it either online or off. Grandpa bought six plots
in Greenwood Cemetery upon the death in June 1934 of
his wife, Jenny Secession McGowan. He had intended the
plots for Jenny, for himself, and for Mama, Uncle
Mark, and Uncle Poe, and Aunt Doris whom Uncle Poe had
married shortly after Jenny's death. Of course, Uncle
Poe was not buried there because when we reached
Greenville we learned that Aunt Doris had secured
plots for them in Pinewood, not having known (as Mama
had assumed she had) about the plots available under
the Worthington headstone in Greenwood. Mama gave me
this information firsthand. However, I never asked her
where other McGowan and Worthington kin were buried
because I assumed that all were in Greenwood--shows
the danger of assumptions! Later, Carol

I've been looking for Willis Wilson, but not this one. There was another one
In Pitt County, NC in early 1800's. Would he be an ancestor?

This is a memorial sign that stands in front of the
church. Typed from a video.

Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church
Front of signβ€”This church was organized around 1800,
named for the branch overgrown with reeds north of the
site. Original building was of log heated by a large
fireplace with simple wood slab pews with wood peg
legs.
The 1850 Will of Theophilus Slaughter left β€œone acre
of land whereon the Meeting House now stands which I
gave to my beloved brethren and sisters to them and
their successors of the free Will order from age to
age and generation to generation.”
After the Civil War, former slaves who worshipped here
were assisted by Reverends

Back of signβ€”(Continues from front)
Billy May, Lorenza Nobles and James Craft in
organizing a church near Greenville, NC known as
English Chapel.
Original building was replaced by frame building in
1880. A 1901 larger frame building is the sanctuary
today hidden by a bricked exterior. Land for the
church cemetery was acquired in 1890.
First full-time pastor and occupant of the parsonage
was Rev. Henry McIvin. The longest record of tenure,
32 years. Is held by Rev. Willis Wilson (1963-1995).

In my search for Bass information to fill out the line, I came across this
website that caught my attention. Some of the Bass men went to SC and lived
there. One of them, Jeremiah Bass, was in the direct line that I am researching.

The following information relates to an Andrews surname, so it is not to be
confused with the Bass line yet, but since it is history about the area, I am
interested in it. Can anyone add anything to this history of the area?

." As a result of his unyielding allegiance to King George, he was forced off
his land in 1781 and went to Charleston, South Carolina where the British had
set up an evacuation station for loyalist. The newly formed North Carolina
legislature would later pass a law, which allowed the confiscation of all of the
land and holdings of Samuel Andrews. During his brief stay in Charleston,
Samuel apparently helped the British run supplies up the Little Pee Dee River to
the red coats who were engaging the forces of the "Swamp Fox", Francis Marion.
Samuel eventually evacuated to Spanish Florida, and later to Yarmouth County,
Nova Scotia. Landed there on one of the ships the British used for
transporting Loyalists. "

Same for me! McAfee, however, notifies me if or when new viruses or suspected to
arrive. This is helpful as it gives me warning of what to expect. I signed up
for this notification from McAfee's website. I can update my scan program at any
time and receive this service at no cost.

Hi Marilyn and all,

It is quite scary to have something mess up your computer like that. I am
overly stringent to prevent something like that, which tends to get me into
trouble - like when I delete a system file, not once but twice!

I am retired as a computer programmer. To keep up with my computer, I
receive information from Kim Komando at www.komando.com (careful a mistype
takes you where you DO NOT want to go. I commend to you her advice. She
recommends having a security and a firewall. She frequently recommends
products and solutions - and many are free.

You can find information on her site using a search feature.

Entering "firewall", I see there is input from people who are NOT satisfied
with Norton Antivirus with Firewall. I do not use it, but I recommend that
you see what they say before you try it. There might be a common mistakes
you could avoid.

Entering "ZoneAlarm" gives input on that product. I can see the overviews
are similar to my own experience. I downloaded this particular product -
choosing the 2 week trial version of one that they charge for. I was
unhappy with all its bells and whistles and removed it after two days. A
positive result was that my computer is now free of all the trash that gave
me popup ads at an alarming rate. I liked the results so much I would
download it (and remove it) again if they startup again. I am planning to
try the totally free version when I have a moment I wish to experiment with
it.

I hope this helps, I would be happy to talk about this again.
Marcia

See Kim's topic "Questions about downloading software?"

FREE SOFTWARE that she recommends, includes:

1. Spyware and Adware Squasher - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Fight back against ad-supported software components (otherwise known as
"spyware") with Adaware, a free removal utility that scans your system and
allows you to safely remove spyware components from your memory, registry
and hard drives. (Which also gets my son's approval.)

2. Free Virus Protection - http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php
AVG AntiVirus is freeware that protects your computer from viruses and
worms. Place infected files in a vault or clean them. The easy-to-use
interface allows you to scan on demand and set up for e-mail protection.
Download updates for free!

Thanks to everyone who answered my e-mail. I see that I will be quite
busy checking out all of these programs. I do like the Trojan Remover
that my son put on the computer, it removes all of the pesty little
trojans that are popping up. I have Norton Antivirus, but will check
all of the new things out there and hopefully this will take care of my
poor computer.

Thanks again,

Marilyn

Hi All,
Just thought I'd pass this article along. Although Wake Forest is located I
think near Winston-Salem, you just never know, one of you from this list just
may have relatives. At the very least it is an interesting article. Enjoy

Paula - Wake Forest, NC is just north of Raleigh, and Wake Forest College
used to be located there. The Reynolds family donated a pile of money to
them and they moved to Winston-Salem. Now Wake Forest University.

Wake Forest(the town) is near Raleigh. Wake Forest (the University) is near
Winston-Salem. So the cemetery is near Raleigh. It is a nice little town
with a college. Some people who work in Raleigh live in Wake Forest.

Here's a little more information on this recently found cemetery
from the local newspaper, "The Wake Weekly",
http://www.wakeweekly.com/archives/2004/Mar25-3.html
The gist of the story - they don't know who is buried there, and
they might be old slave graves. No headstones with names on them.

And yes, it is in the town of Wake Forest, in Wake County, just NE
of Raleigh.
