Hello everyone. My name is Keith Lionel Brown. I am a member of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I currently reside in
Annapolis, Anne Arundel, Maryland, but I was born and raised in
Salisbury, Wicomico, Maryland.

I am the son of John Wallace Brown (b. 23 Jan 1935) and the late
Frances Mae Brown (b. 24 Sep 1937, d. 12 Jun 1997). I am starting to
put my family history together and I am looking for anyone that may
have any information of the following families in Maryland: BROWN,
DASHIELDS (or DESHIELDS), HARMOM, CORBIN, and DAVIS for starters.

I know that my mother's maiden name was Frances Mae Harmon (deceased
12 June 1997, Salisbury, Wicomico, Maryland, 24 Sep 1937 - 12 Jun
1997). Her father's name was Lawrence E. Harmon (deceased Jul 1981,
Salisury, Wicomico, Maryland, 24 Jan 1913 - Jul 1981). Her mother's
name was Margie Isabelle Corbin (deceased Dec 1970, Salisbury,
Wicomico, Maryland, Abt. 1917 - Dec 1970, name at death Margie
Isabelle Corbin Davis, married to Ralph E. Davis Sr.). I also know
that Lawrence E. Harmon father's name was (J.) Ross Harmon ( Abt.
1880..Maryland, date of death is unknown), and his mother's name was
Ida (Iddia) May (Abt. 1881,, Maryland, date of death is unknown). J.
Ross Harmon father's name was George H. Harmon (Abt. 1839,,
Maryland, date of death is unknown).

Margie Isabelle Corbin father's name was Jesse Corbin (Abt. 1890,,,
date of death is unknown) and her mother's name was Grace Parker
(Abt. 1895,,, date of death is unknown).

My father father's name was Vernon Brown (deceased 16 Jul 1936,,
Marland, March 1889 - 16 Jul 1936, b. Sharptown, Wicomico, Maryland)
and his mother's name was Mary Virginia Dashields (deceased Mar
1979, Salisbury, Wicomico, Maryland, 28 Feb 1907 - Mar 1979, name at
death Mary Virginia Winder). Mary Virginia Dashields father's name
was George Washington Dashields (deceased Dec 1977,, Maryland, 14
May 1880 - Dec 1997) and her mother's name was Lula (deceased Dec
1965,, Maryland, 18 Nov 1881 - Dec 1965. Vernon Brown father's name
was Charles A. Brown (deceased 20 Oct 1938,, Maryland, 18 Sep 1861 -
20 Oct 1938) and his mother's name was Amanda F.(deceased 27 Sep
1916, Wicomico, Maryland, 1 Mar 1855 - 27 Sep 1916). Charles A.
Brown father's name was Byard Brown (deceased 1870/1880?, Wicomico,
Maryland, Abt. 1819 -?) and his mother's name was Mary A. ( deceased
15 Jul 1885, Wicomico, Maryland, Abt. 1832 - 15 Jul 1885).

I also know the names, birth dates, death dates, and places of
burial for some of my ancesters. Any and all information that anyone
has and is willing to share will be greatly appreciated. Thank you
very much and God bless you.

Sincerely,

Keith L. Brown

My GGF was born 1824 in Bavaria. I have no idea when
he arrived in America. In 1880 he is listed with his
wife, Susan, in Altoona, Blair County. He was 56 and
she was 36. Where do I look now? I would like Susan's
maiden name, when they married and when George immigrated.
His name was George Kirstner.

Connie,

I have The Master Genealogist program and it great, you can put sources and
citations and the reports print out great. A lot of people say it is a hard
program to learn. I don't think that is correct, way to look at it. It is a
very detailed reporting program. There are also TMG user groups in most
cities, I am in the Seattle area and I go to one once a month and I have had
the program for 7 years.

www.whollygenes.com <http://www.whollygenes.com/> Go to the website and
check it out. I think you will it. One time charge and not like Family Tree
Maker with 19.95 upgrades every couple of months.

Good Luck and let me know if you need any more help.

Cassandra

There are lots of programs out there. Family tree maker - a
purchase is very easy to use but you can download Legacy for free
and it will give you what you are looking for. You can always
upgrade for more funtions. Here is the site --
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ -- standard edition 6.0 is free
on the left side of home page -- http://www.familysearch.org/ also
has a free program PAF -- do a google search you may get more.
Play with them and see which fits your needs.
I use both Legacy and Family tree. I found out about Legacy after I
had purchase and upgrade my Family tree to FT 2005. Good luck
Debby (PA)

No census on RootsWeb? When did this happen? I have been a census
transcriber for RootsWeb for three years. There are two areas for
transcriptions and one for images. Now it is true that these collections are
nowhere near complete but they are there and they are free. It's worth a
shoot to check them out. For links to get there, click on my website link

Dear HockeyMom,
I too am going to SLC in April (for the Polish
Genealogy conference). Perhaps, I'll see you there.

When I emailed Paul Lipinski(the organizer), he
recommended that I note the microfilm numbers (call #'s are for
books/periodicals). Also, he said if any microfilm # was >=
2,000,000 (2M) that you need to send SLC FHC Library an email with
those microfilm #'s and the dates when you will be there. It takes 2-
3 days to get those microfilm (>2,000,000)out of the vault and to
the library.

Hi group,

I just joined and wanted to summarize my research.

I'm currently researching the areas of Hardin and Henderson Counties in
TN; Marshall County, KY; and, Southern IL (Union, Pope, Alexander,
White) for the WINCHESTER family.

My goal is to prove the parentage of my grandfather, Thomas WINCHESTER,
to the Benjamin F. WINCHESTER of Marshall Co., KY and, formerly of,
Hardin Co, TN.

If anyone finds any interest, please feel free to contact me.

Hi Tammy,

Sure thing:

     * Benjamin F. WINCHESTER
born: ca. 1827, Hardin County(?), TN
married 1: unknown
married 2: Nancy Lovel 1873, Marshall County, KY
died: unknown

     * Thomas WINCHESTER
born: 1865-1867 Marshall County, KY (not yet proven)
married (1): 21 Sept 1894 Posey County, IN - Lou TRAVELSTEAD
married (2): 15 Oct 1905, White County, IL - Anna (PEERMAN) WALKER
died: 17 Aug 1926, Pope Co. IL
residence at time of death: Posey County, IN

in 1850 Hardin County TN census a (Ben)jamin was listed with Ruth
WINCHESTER, (age 60 - b. NC). Ruth was listed as head. Ben was 21. Also
listed: Keziah WINCHESTER (female - age 15). Ben and Keziah listed as
born in TN.

In 1860 Henderson County, TN, a BF WINCHESTER is listed (age 32), with
Jane (age 20+ [last digit debatable]), and Martha (age 3). All listed as
born in TN

In 1870 Marshall County, KY. a Benj. F is with several family members,
including a Thomas J,(age 3). The legibility of some of the names on
this census is not clear.

In 1873 a marriage certificate was found for Benjamin F to Nancy Lovel.
Tax records record him as thee until May 1874. After that date, I have
found no records for him. I haven't searched Tax records beyond 1875.
Legend has it that Thomas' parents died in a buggy accident when he was
young, and he was sent to live with another family. Thomas never knew
his mother's given name, but thought her maiden name was MATHIS. This is
strange, because around 1874-5, Thomas would have been 7-8 years old,
and should have known his mommy's name.

Going backwards, I have found no records between 1870 and 1894 for
Thomas. I assume this is the year he first came to IL.

My ancestors came to Illinois from the east coast and may have
traveled through the Appalachian area. I have good information from
the time they came to Illinois to the present. I am looking for
information on the time prior to that.

William Wesley Russell b.10/03/1858 in Russellville KY d. 1/25/1932
(I believe in Illinois)
He is my great grandfather - a farmer and circuit riding Babtist
preacher
Married (02/02/1877) to Mary Alice Sprouse b.01/01/1862 Decatur IL
d.1/12/1942
10 children (I have the names and some birth dates)
I can trace this family down to the present
He came to Illinois in a covered wagon - no date known
His father was named William, his mother Emilia(?) (no known maiden
name) both born in Kentucky
I would like to trace his family back further - suspect a connection
to the Kentucky/Tennessee/Virginia area.

George Byars b. 08/15/1771 in Virginia d. 05/11/1843 married (date
unknown)
to Rebecca Sims No b/d dates
Son (William Payton Byars) was born in Virginia (1792) died in
Illinois (1873)
William Payton's children were born in Virginia until 1824 - the
next child was born (1828) in Illinois, leaving me to assume a move
sometime between 1824 and 1828 to Illinois.

These two families were combined by the marriage of my maternal
grandmother (Carolyn Ellen Russell) and grandfather (Ira Byars). I
can trace this family through to the present.

The Shelton name is my father's family. I have information tracing
this family back to 1610 - Jamestown (Sir James Shelton). His
father was Sir Ralph Shelton, mother was Jane West or( Dorothy
Jermyn - I find no info on her). Jane West's nephew was Thomas
West, 3rd Baron De La Warr who came to Jamestown with James
Shelton. Thomas was made governor of Jamestown for a year or so.
The state of Delaware is named for him.

I have the following male lineage names with some birth dates and
places:

Sir Ralph Shelton
James Shelton
Thomas Shelton
James Shelton
John Shelton
William Shelton
Samuel Shelton
Samuel Shelton
Samuel Waddy Shelton
David R. Shelton
Samuel T. Shelton
James Mason Shelton
Clark Charles Shelton (My grandfather)

What I need is information about the time prior to their moves to
Illinois . Any help will be much appreciated. Let me know if you
need more information - I do have much more

Tammy,

Thank you for this research. While I don't yet see any connection of Benjamin
Felix Winchester to TN, I will keep this for further investigation.

You said: "They had a benjamin felix Winchester and the birth dates of father
and son by the census is very close" Can you clairify this for me? I don't see
that father and son had close birth dates.

Also, you were Benjamin Felix' parents?

Hi I am new to this I am trying to research my family.. I know allot of their
names but don't know where to even start. I thought about joining Ancestry.com
is that a wise place to start or is there somewhere better.. everywhere I look
you have to pay for and I am willing to but don't want to get too ripped off...
I have a name of one of my moms uncles who died in WW1 I have a first name and
I am going to assume he has my grandmothers maiden name.. any suggestions on
finding more about him.. I don't know what part of the war but I believe he was
army.. maybe I am starting in the wrong place but not sure how to do this..
Thanks for letting me join your group!

Hi Terry,
By the census you sent, I estimated thier birth dates and they were close to
the birth dates on the info I sent you. But of course this was just an
estimation. There was also a Benjaman franklin Winchester, but he had a
different wife.
