If both parents of a set of children die, and the maternal grandparents
legally adopt them thus giving the children their mother's maiden name,
do you enter them twice? Once for the parents, and once for the
grandparents as adopted?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have added links to my favorite genealogy websites. Click on the link
in my signature block This is the same as the links in the Beginner Page
it just does not include the hints and tips. Some of the material
covered:
Free or nearly free Genealogy Websites and GEDCOM sharing sites
Cemetery Look up pages
Free Genealogy Software program
Free Census (Not a trial version)
Photo Look up website.
plus more. If you know of a site which is free or there is some other
method of working off your research time. Please send the link to me by
e-mail and I will check it out. Please no free trial offers!

Also you may want to check out the Maps page. Right now it covers most
of England, and Ontario. If you have a high resolution, readable map you
would like to donate, I would appreciate it and give you credit of
course. If the file is large (> 1 MB) please send it to my alternate
address fplum7755@... . Please only use this address for large
files, all other correspondence use this address which I check several
times a day. Hope this is helpful to everyone, thank you for your
participation so far, your response has been heartwarming.

OK here's one for you lawyers out there. My g-grandfather was reported
to have been disbarred because of his fierce temper. I do know that when
he died there was not very many tears shed for him, by his family.
Here's what information I have:

His father John W Hobson was born in Salem Co. Ohio and moved to
Blackhawk Co. Iowa. I do not have a place of birth for the man in
question. I do have him listed in an 1880 Census as Linnaeus HOBSON
although his first name is spelled several different ways. I guess he
didn't care what you called him as long as you didn't call him Late For
Lunch :-). The census is for Blackhawk Co., he is 21 and listed as a
teacher (probably working his way though Law School. I have a Civil War
relative related to his family that did the same thing after the war.
Worked for the railroad while going through law school until an accident
took his arm. He went on to be District Attorney and Justice of the
Peace.) I have no information about his bar or where he was when he was
disbarred. I do know that he was in Denver Colorado in 1899 because that
was were and when my grandmother was born.

Can anybody in the legal field tell me how to locate his records. Where
records kept back then. If they exist can I get copies. I'm at a real
loss on this one but I'm very curious because this man was just not very
well liked.

Thank you in advance for any thing you can help with.

Hi I am hoping someone can help me. I am interested in doing a
family tree and just researching ancestors. Unfortunately I don't
know anybody other than immediate relatives such as parents and
aunts. I don't even know my grandparents (died before I was born).
Anyway 1st question-does that matter? And second question-what is
the best way to start? Like what is the first thing I should do? I
can see how this can get quite overwhelming. Does anyone recommend
software or books?

Thanks for reading this message.

Lesley, my advise to you is to start out by interviewing your living relatives
and asking them what it is that they know and will share with you. Ask the right
questions of them, you want to know as many facts as possible. Ask the names of
your ancestors, the maiden names of the women, place of birth, date of birth,
date and place of marriages, date and place of deaths. Any children they may
have had, always wanting to know the dates and places things happened. Ask about
their occupations, military service and any personal stories they may have.
Obtain family tree forms to record all this information on ( free on
ancestry.com ). This will give you a good start and lead you to where you need
to look next. Good luck, Norm

Hello

I am new. I am researching the redding family tree. I have not got
very far yet. My great grandfather was Joseph Redding Born in Dublin.
In 1881 census he was a visitor to Swann family in Cambridge. In
1901 he was living in Newton-Le-Willows with his mother who by then
was a widow.

I cannot find Mary Redding so I am working on the theory that Joseph
was illegitimate but I do not know this for sure.

Any fresh input would be appreciated.

Hosted by Tom Kelleher, Research Historian at Old Sturbridge

Discover F.W. Beers and the secrets of his 19th Century Atlases.
Learn how they can uncover your community and family history

Early atlases are often neglected research tools that can provide
us with a fascinating glimpse into our local past, on a very
personal scale. In the final third of the nineteenth century,
advances in lithography and improvements in transportation and
communication allowed the successful commercial publication
of county atlases for much of the United States. These early
atlases were much more than mere road maps, however, as
each community was recorded in considerable detail. These
treasure troves of information are fascinating glimpses of what
the land we now inhabit once looked like. One might learn who
once lived in your house, or discover that what is now just a pile
of stones in the woods was once a bustling factory. Atlases are
often as useful to local historians and genealogists today as
they must have been to contemporaries trying to navigate the
roads of nineteenth-century America.

I thought that I'd post this to encourage others. I, with my
brothers, help found a whole line of Sergeants that I knew existed,
but had no way to find them directly. My cousin [86 y/o] and I
visited for four wonderful days last week! My bro had stumbled onto
Ancestry.com message boards and sent the url to me. When in doubt,
contact people that "may" be related. My contact has made my "year"
and it's only May 1st! D. Brown

I would like to find out about the surnames of Fry, Twombley,
Aldrich, and Dannels. If you can help me, I would greatly appreciate
it.

Thanks again

Hi, Kari!

I'm delighted to see this list become active. Joined recently and wondered
where everyone was.

Could we have some details? What are you trying to find with those four
surnames?
